Hi All
I have been rooting my device using both Paul R3 and R5 (tried both since I though r5 include hebrew)
The procedure went ok
I have tried to follow the procedure described here
1) download the DeJaVu fonts from here, they are freely licensed (so no worry about copyrights).
2) copy 'DejaVuSans.ttf' to your sdcard and rename it exactly 'DroidSansFallback.ttf'
3) start terminal emulator and type exactly (watch the Case) the following commands, followed by enter:
Code:
su (then wait for the superuser screen and press yes)
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
reboot
your phone will now reboot, and vualla! you have your native language displayed! no more white boxes! Ha Ha Ha!!
which seems show as it is completed successfully ....but yet I get squares instead of hebrew
I did it twice but again no luck
I would appreciate if someone can shade some light or direct me
Thanks

Hi, i am currently experiencing problems with my g1 (uk rc8/now rc7) I follow all the instructions and I now have rc7 on my g1, however I am stuck at this point:
Instructions:
5. After your phone starts up, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
6. Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
7. If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
8. Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
* mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
* cd sdcard
* flash_image recovery recovery.img
* cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
I type telnetd>press enter, nothing happens. I thought that was fair enough, so went to market and downloaded telnet, and clicked connect for localhost 23. I get a message saying:
'error while connecting to server: localhost/127.0.0.1:23 -connection refused'
followed by:
'error while receiving from server: null'
What am I doing wrong?
I'm having this same problem with rc33 and my system is modded already I'm trying to end some apps with task manager and It says something like unable to connect to host ..... blah blah I went to telnet and I get the same error you get.
@tucka20: Try typing the telnetd command in soon after a fresh reboot. If you do it after the system has been booted up for a long time it may not work.
@Lamar720: already rooted don't need to work through telnet. Just open Terminal Emulator and do your work there.

I don't understand how but, I tried it again after I went to T.E. and typed in
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
and Task manager is now terminating apps ..... Thanks

Wait are you on official RC33 or modified/rooted RC33? If it's the latter then yeah you cannot perform those operations. Need root access.
Task manager is now terminating apps ..... Thanks
jf 1.41 rc33 lite it works telnet doesnt but the task manager does.
Sorry I had a mistype in the first post I meant now not not . lol thanks again
I got this information from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480964 for the G1
Just edited it so it would work for the Epic 4G.
This only works if you have root enabled (get it here) and it would be best to have the superuser app on as well.
1: download the DeJaVu fonts from here using one-click, they are freely licensed.
2: unzip and copy 'DejaVuSans.ttf' to your sdcard and rename it exactly 'DroidSansFallback.ttf' (without the quotes)
using ADB: (this makes it easier to copy and paste)
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
dd if=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf.bak
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
reboot
on-phone:
start terminal emulator and type exactly the following commands, followed by enter:
Code:
su
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
dd if=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf.bak
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
reboot
after reboot you will be able to see all languages supported by dejavu
note: if dejavu doesn't support your language, just find a font that does, and follow the exact same procedure.

unsure this is neccessary for users who upgraded to froyo.
All my friends who stick hebrew in their facebook status messages, it now comes through perfectly (as upgraded to froyo).
However, there are still many RTL issues that I see from time to time.
As the title states, is TypeFresh good to go on rooted 2.1 on an X10i? The huge fonts are killing me
It wouldn't reboot for me so I've just used RootExplorer instead.
It worked fine for me, both apps (Typefresh and Andexplorer) where installed from the market.

Thanks for all the links my friend.
I always use this method to change my fonts:
1. I pick the font I want and I copy the regular and bold version on my SD.
2. I rename the regular to DroidSans.ttf and the bold to DroidSans-Bold.ttf.
3. Then, on my phone, using a Terminal application, I type:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSans.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSans-Bold.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf
4. Reboot!
5. Enjoy!!

I tried to change it by the Terminal but it says adb not found. Please help how can I overcome this problem.
If you can't get Typefresh to reboot please try the following: Install the latest Busybox from the market. This fixed the problem for a friend of mine.

I used the same method. The first time you run Typefresh you have to give permission, this will cause Typefresh to 'cannot remount sytem' , when you retry it works

Hi.It works like a charm.Thanks for sharing!
Or just copy and paste using RootExplorer or similar. TF can be a bit temperamental at times, was in 1.6 and is in 2.1.
works perfectly for me... running sony sketch..... no more large letters in 2.1
Finally mr. yakk did it!!! I helped him a little bit and tested all on my own locked Charm.
It works on 2.60 firmware only. Not tested on 3.90.
1: flash phone using RSD and this firmware: http://simf.in/charm/T-Mobile_MB502_02.60.5_1FF_01.zip
2) root it using SuperOneClickRoot: http://simf.in/charm/SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse.zip
3) download file and unzip it to SD card: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/atta...1&d=1323018502
4) go to shell (ADB shell or even use terminal emulator on the phone) and do next steps:
Code:
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/mtdblock7 /system
cp /sdcard/telnetd /system/bin/
chmod 777 /system/bin/telnetd
reboot phone with any SIM and enloy your unlocked toy
Note: after reflashing your phone will be locked again.
Reposts or even usage of file which does unlock in any posts without links to topic where I am orgrinally posted this method ( http://forum.motofan.ru/index.php?showtopic=1730439 )are strictly prohibited.

I don't own a Charm no more, but I kinda don't see how that works. There is no command to 'execute' telnetd after 'chmod 777 /system/bin/telnetd'. Are you saying the phone will automatically recognize the file and unlock the sim?

I am having trouble with the code in terminal
I am having trouble typing in the terminal code and I am a big noob at that kind of stuff so if u could reply to my post and make it a bit simpler for me that would be amazing thanks.
Can it be done?
I tried de Superoneclick method and it did not worked.
But also i tried with another program "unclockroot 2.3.1" ad the thing is that after i run it and before i reboot phone i have shell root "#" but nothing of superuser or SU on the phone.
Could it be possible, after i have "#" to change R/W previligies on system folder and install superuser.apk and SU through adb commands?
which ones are the adb commands to perform?
And can anyone send superuser.apk and the proper su to install?
Many thx for all the help.
D_Saint
The method to root Desire S without unlocking bootloader is described at least in 5 places, in General and Development forums, and involves downgrading the firmware. Please read.
did not find any that suites my needs.
And believe me i searched, i have been reading about this in the past 2 weeks....
Can you please send me the links?
I found these commands:
# mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/st19 /system
# exit
adb push busybox /system/bin
adb push su /system/bin
adb install Superuser.apk
adb shell
# chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
# chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
# mount -o remount,ro -t rfs /dev/block/st19 /system
# exit
adb reboot
Are they correct?
Thx again.
what we are saying is that for now u cant root d latest hboot 2.0.0.xx u have to downgrade 1st or use d XClip hardware to permanently unlock n root ur desire s
cheers
No, the commands are incorrect, because the root you're seeing is only temporary, and the thing that protects /system from being written to is not just R/O mount. There is a HW protection that needs to be unlocked to be able to write to /system, otherwise everything you do will be gone after rebooting. I said - please read, and I meant it. If you want pointers - google "how S-OFF was achieved on G2" and then read.
