Apps that are ok to remove with root - EVO 4G Themes and Apps
lets get a list of apps that are ok to remove
how about we start with a list of all the app? those of us w/o the EVO yet can give some general suggestion on universal android apps which can be removed.
from adb shell or connectbot localhost
ls -l /system/app/*.apk && ls -l /system/app/*.odex
Not sure how to remove these apps since /system is protected. Even when I remount as r/w and try rename/delete the APK, it comes back.

do it from recovery mode. in recovery mode, because of the userdebug RUU - PC36IMG.zip. we have write access to /system and root access.
it wont work in normal system mode until we can bypass NAND protection.
I will post a list when I get my EVO rooted. Hopefully in a couple hours.

Sorry for the timestamps. I have Windows at work. Anyway, most of the apps are safe to remove and self explanatory. Most of them. Not all. I will post a more detailed post if I get a chance but don't remove anything that you don't know what it does.
Rosie is the Sense shell so if you remove that it will leave with you the normal launcher (which I prefer anyway). Also don't remove IRQD.apk or something like that. Also Remember to backup your files before removing any! Very important. Just do an adb pull /system/app/filename before you remove it.

That won't remove them. that just backs them up on your computer. To remove something do the following:

adb pull /system/app/filename.apk
adb pull /system/app/filename.odex
adb shell
cd /system/app
rm filename.apk
rm filename.odex
APKs are the application packages and odex are essentially a cached file to speed up execution of the application. If you ever need to put a file back onto the phone just go into the directory you backed it up in and do:

On a side note, has anyone verified we can indeed remove apps. I read that this root method doesn't give is r/w access to the system? If that's the case nothing said in this thread will work.
I'm pretty sure you can write to /system while in recovery with adb. So we should be able to remove all the Sprint crap (except for quik in my case) while in recovery mode.

flip'z stock ROM gives us root in NORMAL mode but not system r/w access due to NAND protection.
currently, in order to remove apps, it must be done in recovery mode after loading the PC36IMG.zip (userdebug RUU with root access and system r/w in recovery mode) as described in toast's root thread.

i guess i'm not familar with removing anything in recovery. i always just use the adb shell.
what's the format for removal in recovery? unless, this recovery mode looks like a terminal...
i'm used to amon_ra's recovery, which isn't a terminal.

adb shell in recovery mode is the same as adb shell in normal android mode, except with the current root method by toast, we know how access to system read/write in recovery mode!
My steps thus far:
1. ) Booted into recovery via adb shell (adb reboot recovery)
2. ) Run evo-recovery script
3. ) adb shell commands:

I have both a Samsung Moment and a CDMA Hero, I love my hero but use the divx player on the Moment, any way to get this puppy on the hero?

My wife used to have one, but the battery life was sooo horrible I made her trade it for a hero.

I have a Moment system dump sitting here on my desktop, but I have no clue which APK it is, nothing that screams DivX to me.
don't some of the task managers/killers give you the package names of running processes? for those of you with a moment try running the divx player and then running the task manager and see if you can figure out what the package name is from that. would love to get a good media player for the hero.

Click to collapse yeh..i found a full ROM dump and there are a few different files in the /system/lib folder including such files as "libAC3Dec.so, libAACPlusDec.so, and libWMA9Dec.so"...all of which sound kinda promising

Not really sure why you would want a divx/xvid player when the hero has hardware h.264 mp4 support. Smaller file sizes and smoother video. Also, I think there was a video player in the market that had some extra formats. Divx being one of them.
It would be nice to have VLC or mPlayer. I had it on my iPhone and there wasn't anything I couldn't play except for the occasional WMV file.
I thought mplayer had been compiled for ARM before. I wonder how much work it would be for me to compile mplayer under a small android app. I wonder if mplayer's license even allows this method. I do know there are a bunch of dependencies for it... VLC had talked about an android client.

Click to collapse Alright I toyed with this shortly last night, only references in the apks to video I found was in the music aol so my question to the OP is does it launch from the same app that plays music or is there a seperaye app?
I was looking around at the VLC site. It looks like it is possible to be able to port VLC to Android, but it would take a crap load of effort. We would need a Java based interface and VLC would have to run native code. So we could use the Linux stuff that is already built, but would have to make a Java interface to it. Very do-able just time consuming and I just don't have the time, and it's probably not near as easy as it sounds.

Hey guy's, I know i have seen this before, but i can't seem to find it anywhere via search. I'm trying to flash a new boot animation and i noticed that i don't have enough space in "/system". So i'm wondering if anyone could tell me what would be safe to delete from here beyond ring tones. Root explorer tells me i only have 8K free! I'm running Uniporn AOKP ICS Thanks in advance!

Hello guys, Is there any way of installing fonts besides monotype flipfont, without root? I was looking at Roboto but since it's not a monotype flipfont it can't be installed normaly or through apps which is annoying.
