Hey gang,
Does anyone know if google voice works over 3g? Or does it only work over wifi...I am using this app that gets google voice to call me so I don't use my minutes...however I think its still using my time when I do it over 3g?
THANKS!

It uses your minutes regardless. GV is not VoIP.
You could use Fring/Sipdroid/etc. with a Gizmo5 account if you have one (unlikely) or a VoIP service that offers a free phone number.

Google Voice is VoIP. Just go to settings and pick the setting that will let you choose whether to use Google Voice or the phone. Google Voice is great when you are using a phone without a sim-card and just wi-fi but it works over edge and 3G also.

Actually Silverskull's answer was perfect, your info is wrong
gVoice is not VOIP and uses your carrier minutes. The call is initiated using a data connection.
If you need instructions on how to use free VOIP, see http://lifehacker.com/5349506/make-free-voip-calls-from-google-voice
There are rumors that google will enable pure VOIP this year....lets see.

It uses your outgoing minutes. Or if you use a thirdparty app, incoming minutes.
Before correcting, please do research.
http://voip.about.com/od/unifiedcommunications/f/HowGoogleVoiceWorks.htm
So if it uses your minutes what the benefits of google voice having it call you back to dial a number? Can you explain please?
1. Free calls across north america (US, Canada)
2. Single incoming number for all your house, mobile and any other numbers.
3. Call screening
4. Seemless call transfer between all your numbers without disconnection.
5. Visual voicemail and voicemail to text.
6. Free international SMS.
7. Invite only cool bragging rights.
GV
I've been using GV for over 4 months and since i've used it I totaled maybe 100 minutes from my carrier. I'm not a heavy caller but at east 20 minutes a day. Why don't you give it a try then do a minute check balance daily?

This method is used perfectly when you're overseas and want to call the US/Canada for free. You have Google Voice call your Gizmo5 number to connect your call and use the Gizmo5 app to speak via computer. And Yes I have a gizmo5 account and Yes it is up for auction.... =)
As one who uses GV with my Droid, I can assure you that it does not provide VOIP calling.
What is cool is that the GV app for Android provides free Visual Voicemail-type features and free SMS functionality, all over your data connection with no additional fees.
Now, to get free calling with GV and your data connection, do the following:
1) Sign up for a SipGate One account ( Google for sipgate ). This is a VOIP account that has free incoming calls and a free phone number.
2) Sign up for a SIPSorcery account ( Google for sipsorcery ). Requires silverlight to operate the site.
3) Add your SipGate account to SIPSorcery.
4) Get one of the dial plans from a Google Code project ( Google for google-voice-sipsorcery-dialplans ) . Instructions are also available there to show you how to add it to your SIPSorcery account.
5) Set up the SIP software of your choice (could be an ATA with a real phone, SIP software for your PC, or SIPDroid for Android phones), and use your SIPSorcery credentials to connect to the SIPSorcery service. Do not use your SIPGate credentials here.
6) Add your SIPGate phone number to your Google Voice account and go through the authorization process (it will call your SIPGate number).
7) Decide whether or not you want to have all incoming GV calls ring your SIP number or not. Configure GV to that effect.
Notes -- When you place an outgoing call with SIPDroid or other SIP software, it connects to SIPSorcery, which will then initiate a GV callback to your SIPGate number (so that you get the calls for free as incoming calls), and bridges the calls together. This is mostly seamless, however it does create as much as a 10 or 15 second delay before the call is placed. Additionally, on occasion it will fail to bridge the connection (the recipient's phone will ring, but you won't be connected to them).
Note 2 - This will appear as a call from your GV phone number, not your cell phone number.
Note 3 - I have found that there is a significant "dual ringing" problem when you receive a call on SIPDroid and over your cell carrier's voice plan at the same time. As such, and since some areas where I spend a lot of time have spotty data coverage, I do not usually have SIPDroid connected on my phone. It does work very well on my PC, however, and I plan to set up an ATA with a phone at home too.
One final thought -- We will all cheer when Google enables VOIP services for us, but they won't be free (they'll just be cheap, like $0.02/minute or something).
Thank you for your thoughts my friend!
Thank you for this information it has been very informative =)

Hey everyone, I've had an OG Droid since Jan 1. 2010, and just upgraded to the Thunderbolt, I love it! Anyways, my name's Wes, and I need to build up a few posts before I can write in the development threads. So here's my tidbit of advice, if you happen to be on a family plan or have limited available minutes, you can combine GV+Sipdroid+GVDialer to make free calls over wifi AND 3g/4g. This is covered on the internet all over the place, but I had to research a ton before getting it to work on my droid because I found that many guides out there were from back in the day when google hadn't made things so easy to set up. Now that a lot of us have 4g, call quality and connection will be very consistent. How it works (confusing i know!): free VoIP #'s are available but only allow free incoming calls, so google makes them all in coming. GV dialer uses the internet instead of minutes to tell google voice to dial your desired call out #, then google voice sends the call to you as an incoming call. Google then lets you reroute that incoming call to your random DID # from ipcomms.net, and BOOM, a free "outgoing" incoming call. So in a quick nutshell, here's what you do.
Get a google voice #, download google voice app to your phone
Download GV Dialer from the market (paid app, maybe 2 bucks or something i forget)
Download Sipdroid from the market (not sipdroid + Showmee)
Then visit ipcomms.net and get the "free DID" by registering. Once you get the email with your free did, open the document with your info and jot down your username and password. (i think they're both 10 digits, you can't change this password either)
Open sipdroid, and hit Menu>Settings,SIPAccount#1, then for username and password enter what you found in the step above. For "Server or Proxy" enter "sipconnect.ipcomms.net"
Scroll down and you can adjust whether you want it to connect over 3g(4g works also) and/or WIFI, Edge
if it's working, you'll see a green light in your notifications bar, meaning your DID # is ready to receive free calls, but no one knows that #, so...
IMPORTANT: navigate to google.com/voice on your computer, login with your credentials, then go to to settings (top right corner) > Phones tab, then click "add another phone" Enter you're 10 digit ipcomms #, then click call to verify(make sure green light is on). You will get a call on the sipdroid app, slide to answer, then enter the code google gave you in your web browser on your computer to activate (if no keypad is showing, hit menu button and you can get to it during the call)
Once this is done and your phone is added, make sure calls to your voice account are set to forward calls to you ipcomms number.
Finally, open Gv dialer, login, go to its settings, and click "default phone to ring," after a moment you'll be given the option to select your ipcomms #, click that. YOU'RE DONE!
To make a call with VoIP, open gizmo(make sure you've got green light), then on your phone open GV dialer, dial the number you want, click "connect with google voice", wait for the internet to tell google to call the number and call your ipcomms # back, and voila, you get an incoming call, answer it, and you'll hear the call connecting and starting to ring.
I wrote this in about 10 minutes so if you have any questions of if anything sounds wrong or I made typos lemme know, now i'm going back to this VCU Kansas game for a bit. Hopefully someone out there finds this useful.

Yes.
Under Sipdroid's description in market: "Being open source, Sipdroid has often been cloned appearing under names such as Guava, aDIP, Fritz!App,..."
You can actually do it without Sipdroid on phones with Gingerbread (its built into the settings you just enter your ipcomms info) but we don't have it yet, and the gingerbread version has very few adjustable settings.
there are also alternatives to GV dialer as well as sites that offer free DID numbers for inbound calls, but this setup has worked fine for me.
I'll give it a try, thanks!

Any other sip providers working? Using Ekiga and ipkall for Gv calling, doesn't work so well on CSipSimple...... Would like to transition to another service easily as possible, and ipcomms is a bit confusing.
An easier method is to just download GV and GVoice callback. http://www.appbrain.com/app/google-voice-callback-free/com.xinlu.gvdial
I don't have sipdroid on my phone, and I can "dialout" using this with my google voice number. It shows up on the other phone as my GV # and I checked my bill for the calls (I used it for a whole day one time to see what would happen and didn't have calls on my bill for that day) and they weren't there. I tried to do the sip droid method one time, and I had a hard time getting it setup. So I just gave up. But this solution seems to work like a charm for me.

+1 but this only works if you have F&F and have a number to burn to put in there. Don't use it much but when calling my bud in canada or maybe a conference call i use it and it works just swell....on an incredible though, I"m still a wannabe
I got a free number from goog. Sorry, I'm bad with acronyms, what does F&F stand for?
Sipdroid thing was annoying when I tried it. I really prefer gv callback. I have it set up to ask me every time. Its pretty sweet.
so how exactly do you do this without sipdroid? I've got gv callback and its like the same as gv dialer asks which number i want to forward to, you're saying you can forward to google voice somehow? gv callback has option to start sipdroid before callback, so i would assume i still need something to handle the call received? Do I use google talk as callback number?
Do you have a google voice number? If not, go get one. It's free. Use you're regular gmail account to set it up. Then download goog voice also. There will be an option to use GV as the call back number. (also under the online GV settings you have to link you're mobile to the GV #). last, then you just set it to ask you every time to call you back, then when you go to call someone it will give you the option to use GV or not. If still need help I'll pm you my phone.
i have a google voice number, and the google voice app already. what do you mean forward to your GV number? Under google voice app there are no forwarding settings.
you mean you forward to your mobile number on google voice online settings, as in your verizon number? And it doesn't charge you any minutes? I'm pretty sure it still counts as using your minutes, you checked exactly when you called and compared it to the dates and times on your bill?
Gv callback requires friends and family to be of any benefit. Sipdroid allows you to make calls over your data connection, uses no minutes. It lags heavily though, not recommended if you have friends and family at your disposal.
edit, see my post to shaddix
I'm sorry, I've been mistaken. Somehow the actual GV app gives me the option to make voice calls. That is what i have been using. GV I downloaded but never set up. Not sure how I ended up with such a confusion. It used to just give the option to make international calls, but now you can set it up to ask everytime. I'm not yet rooted or I would take some screen shots.
I'm sorry but if you use f&f to begin with then y going thru all the hassle since f&f doesn't bill used minutes?
Sipdroid is better when you're on lte. If you are on conference calls a lot, sipdroid does help saving those minutes

Ah, thank you.
Do you get free texting using only GV? I know $10/month is not a whole lot but for those that have only voice (no text plan), it will come in handy.
google voice app offers free VoIP, but what about ToIP lol if there is such a thing (text over ip haha). is texting free over google voice? and can it be done with your carrier number, or does it have to be done with your google voice number?
texting works
Texting with voice works great. I do with my tablet and the PC. I like to use a full keyboard. So I prefer the PC when I am home. My mom has text plus on her ipad and I text to her with gvoice. If you use gvnotifier it will work in your tray. Good luck

Oh yeah I don't even have a carrier number. Or a phone ..just the hptouchpad
but does it count for your minutes? i like google voice, because voip doesnt use any of your minutes, does it do the same for texts?
It counts as data in your plan but not towards your text plan
I think you got some misunderstand here.
Google voice is not VOIP, it is a forwarding service that provide you with a number to use for any phone you have. When you call someone with GV, Google server call you and that person at the same time, then connect you two, which mean you are using your minutes plan. But if you have access to a web browser on a computer, you can use Gmail to call phone or other Gmail user - that is VOIP (it is free for now, but they will start to charge for the service)
But texting with Google voice is free as long as you have internet access (wifi or data plan). The person who receive it with a normal phone number would have to pay for text plan however
Groove IP
Don't forget groove IP. with the voice app , it will use the data connection.. wifi preferred text and with groove ip you can make phone calls using data voip no phone minutes.
Hey guys I was wondering if groove ip with GV is worth setting up since I have heard that the call quality is bad. Is it actually bad?

You can download the free version and just try it out - you don't have to commit to it.
I really need GV
I feel like I'm missing out on Google Voice. It makes sense to use since I'm on unlimited data, but the day I'm off it...I'll probably curse it.
How much data do you all usually use per month with doing texting/voice?

so i currently have an at&t prepaid number and I have ordered a new t-mobile prepaid sim. Short codes can be hit or miss, too.
Required :
1. The phone of course (Samsung Droid Charge), other Android and iPhone working too.
2. Wifi Hotspot.
3. An active phone number on other phone (CDMA or GSM).
4. LINE from NAVER or VIBER from Viber Media, Inc (Download from market) and many other app available.
Let's begin :
1. Connect ur Droid to WIFI hotspot, download the app (LINE/VIBER) if you don't have it yet.
2. Run the app and register with an active phone number. The app will send SMS with a code to the registered phone number that app needed.
3. Complete the registration.
4. Add the phone number u need to call to ur Droid contact.
5. Enjoy ur call with the app.
NB:Calling/messaging function only work to the relevant app registered users. Most app only work for Android and iPhone and a few including Blackberry.

Google Voice doesn't make VOIP calls, it requires an actual number to connect to. However, you could get a plan that allows you to make calls to specified numbers without using minutes, then set your GV # as one of them, and make all the calls you want without using minutes.
GVoice makes VOIP calls. I measured the bandwidth at the router when I was on WIFI. I also set up a phone with no service with a different phone number. I also tested GVoice on WIFI by changing throughput and testing jitter and the effect on the VOIP calls.
I used Groove, I didn't try the calls with another method, although a Gchat session should work the same.

Thanks for the post, I didn't actually catch that. I was just stating that GVoice does indeed use VOIP if it is set up to do so. I believe GVoice allows for free calls to US and Canada, as well as free calls from another country into the US and Canada.
Your solution is pretty awesome if you need that service. I would like to see an analysis of codec quality, delay, bandwidth usage, jitter, etc to see how it compares to GVoice. Google keeps saying that free GVoice calls will expire, but so far its been renewed. It will be nice to have an alternative, particularly a good, free alternative.
Have you tried your method with success? How is the subjective call quality and call drop rate, etc?
Thanks for the info

U need high speed connection/WIFI to get better call quality.
I have used these apps and prove it work succesfully. The only issue is the call have a delay about 1 sec, so u need to be patient to wait the answere after u speak coz ur voice will be heard after the delay.
Viber will only allow free calls to other Viber users, unless they changed that at some point. And GV must have changed then if you can make calls with it VOIP style with no cell service and only wifi, as it was only a call forwarding service before, meaning you still needed to have the ability to make calls through the phone.

I know you can use the web version of Google Talk as an endpoint for outgoing calls now. I haven't messed with any versions on device though (and if it works, we'd still probably have the audio issue on the Charge).
I used Google voice in Puerto Rico to place free calls over wifi. You can't be in airplane mode because it uses the normal dialer, but it does not use any cellular airtime to place the call.
Google voice integrates well with the android OS. My gf uses it to stay under her 450min plan.

Yeah, I can only speak regarding usage of GVoice with GrooveIP. Otherwise a phone call would have to be initiated in Google Chat. Without Groove, you probably won't know you have an incoming call, at least not in time to answer it.
My buddy uses Groove all the time on his WiFi with excellent results- it works okay on 3G in good coverage and it works excellently on 4G. I have enough minutes and crappy coverage so I generally don't use Groove a whole lot, but it sure is cool to be able to send/receive calls anytime to your GVoice number. I also set up the Google Voice app on the phone alongside Groove (I configured Google Voice app somehow not to notify/bother me). Groove does the phone calls and Google Voice app does the text. This way you can send/receive calls and texts for free without delays. It works brilliantly, and its nice to forward Verizon's voice mail to GVoice, then configure GVoice to forward an email for each text, voicemail, and missed call you get.
If I had better coverage, I would only use GVoice. There is a bit more delay with GVoice than a 1X call, I would say, but not bad.
Is it verified that Viber only works to other Viber callers?
I'm a little cynical that somehow the carriers will try to crack down on Google Voice users or that Google will at some point stop free calling.

I'd try Groove (a free or paid app). Uses voip, so you need data. The free version uses WiFi, while the paid version can use 3G. Also, you need a Google voice number for this to work.
I use a sip account thru pbxes.org linked to a us number thru ipkall.com along with sipdroid, voice+ and google voice. Totaly free incomimg and outgoing us calls thru your google voice number. I know it sounds complicated, and kind of is but its worth it in the end.
Once setup when you dial a number voice plus catches the call and asks whether to use regular phone or a "callback" from google voice. So you select callback which sends the info thru the net to google voice who then calls your free sip number. You answer and are automaticly connected to the number you dialed for free. Then on the google voice settings page you have your gv number forwarded to your free sip number and all incoming calls are free.
On a side note stock roms and probably most custom roms do not allow sip over 3g by default. You must edit the framework-res.apk file to allow it.
Hi everyone. I am planning on getting the Nexus 5 and I am planning to get the $30 a month plan from T-Mobile which allows for 100 minutes of talk, unlimited texts, and 5 GB of 4G Data. I was planning on using the Google Talk app with Groove IP or talkatone to call because I already have my Google Voice number and I just want to use my data to call people (In other words, I want to use VOIP so I can call with Google Voice over my data). With the integration of Google voice and hangouts will I still be able to do that? Please someone reply because I am ordering the Nexus 5 in a few days (I am waiting for reviews first).

On the same boat, I'm sure you will for now, keep in mind Google has announced they are killing 3rd party access to GV next year so u will have that VoIP capability for so long. I'm on ST now but do plan on porting over to TMO next month and do plan on milking VoIP Talkatone for as long as I can till they completely kill it. Google I believe may fully offer a full VoIP solution which would in fact be great to have.
I don't know about Groove but Talkatone has announced they r working on a new product that mirrors it's current capabilities (sans GV), looking forward to what they r cooking up.

So if Google offers full VOIP, then there is no need for third party apps right? And you are saying that Talkatone is working on something just like Google Voice?? But the only thing is, with talkatone, you will most likely get another number, and then you have to go through the process of switching numbers like telling everybody about your new number and making sure htye change it and........its just a big hassle. I hope Google extends the deadline or I might have to switch to the $45 plan from straight talk. How is the HSPA+ on their network? Is it close to 4G. I am fine if it is not as fast as 4G but I want it more faster than 3G for sure and I know it is that. I am still debating on using Google Voice still or just switching to Straight Talk.
The Walmart plan does not allow for call forwarding or conditional forwarding so you will never be able to setup Google voice to be your voice mail system... Just a heads up..

Correct, no more 3rd party apps needed. No idea on how/what Talkatone would offer but my guess is yes a new # would be needed. Gotta wait and see.
On ST I actually have LTE, pre LTE days my internet was horrible, since they launched LTE everything has been really smooth, haven't experienced any throttling yet *knock on wood*. Honestly I'm happy with ST but wouldn't mind saving the extra 15 bucks a month and getting 2x the limit. My only worry is service, here in Miami I have heard a lot of dead spots for TMO, whereas ATT I was with them for like 15 yrs and never have a problem. I'm still gonna try TMO, benefits of having my main number on GV I could cancel and just get any new carrier # whenever I want.

Oh ok I didn't know ST ever switched. I heard that ST throttles after 2.5 GB of data which really, isn't all that bad. I think I am going to stick with TMO for right now or atleast until Google stops their third-party app service.

The Walmart plan does not allow for call forwarding or conditional forwarding so you will never be able to setup Google voice to be your voice mail system... Just a heads up..

Google Voice has its own voicemail service that will notifiy you of a voicemail via the Google Voice app or through the GV web interface. When I was on Straight Talk I checked all my voicemails through the Google Voice app.

But when you setup the google voice app it tries to set that option (conditional call forwarding to google voice's voicemail).. Which it cant as the Walmart plan does not support this feature, But yes you can do it through the app thats correct, but i rather full integration.. But if you don't have the finances or the credit to get a post paid account (THE ONLY PLANS THAT SUPPORTS THE FORWARDING FEATURE) and you need to opt for the Walmart plan i guess you have to do what you have to do.
Either way gets it done...
Yea it's all good to me either way. You will still get a GV Voicemail notification. There are some downsides to pre paid. I had straight talk for a year and then went to att. But kind of regret having a contract now. I am going to try aio wireless before too long here.

I am planning on using a tablet sim card and using it in addition to a Verizon dumb phone. T-Mobile has terrible coverage in my area, and I need to make calls.

You don't transfer your Google Voice number to Straight Talk. Straight Talk will give you a Straight Talk number. Then you download the Google Voice app. When you first open the Google Voice app on your android device it will take you through configuration. I set mine to " use Google voice to make all calls" and I don't even use my carriers number at all.
So you will have 2 phone numbers. You give out which ever one you want to. The GV number will work only if you have the Google Voice app installed. You can also send/receive text only texts and receive voicemail via the Google Voice app. Google Voice also works on a desktop computer through its web interface. You can also block numbers via Google Voice.

Ok, so after I do that, I can just install an app likek Groove IP or Talkatone and then just make and recieve calls too right? I am just going to give out my Google Voice number to everyone so when they call me, I will receive the call through Google voice on the native dialer app on Android or am I going to receive the call through an app like Groove IP or Talkatone

It gets kind of tricky when you want to use a VoIP like GrooveIP to make and receive calls over data/wifi instead of your carriers phone service. You can set your phone to natively use your Google Voice number to make/receive all calls, but it will use your plans minutes instead of data if you do not have GrooveIp or Talkatone setup correctly (it will come through your native android dialer and use your tmobile minutes by default).
I have attached a link for a guide that was originally written in the Galaxy Nexus forum. It has a guide to Google Voice + VoIP calling. I have used GrooveIP on my wifi only tablet to make calls over wifi, but have never tried bypassing carrier phone service on my cellphone using GrooveIP. It can be done though.
*Also be aware Google has said they will eventually disable access to Google Voice from third party apps so this may mess things up in the future. Have a backup plan ready just incase they do this. We may be only abel to ue the Hangouts app in the future. Also you cannot send or receive pic and vid messages via Google Voice, just text only messages.

ok so I cannot send and recieve pic or vid messages but I can just use another app like GoSMS or some other apps that use your regular phone number(in my case, my google voice number) to send and recieve text messages right? I am thinking that i should not get a plan first when I get my nexus. Like set it up and everything by using wifi to send and receive calls and texts and then later on I will get a plan and just forward my number that i get once i get my plan to my google voice number.

You will have to use a carriers phone number to send pic and vid messages. Google Voice's servers cannot handle that type of data, so you cannot send/receive pic/vid messages with your GV number at all. A Google Voice number is only good for makings calls and TXT, not SMS or MMS.
If you are going to use your Nexus on wifi only with no plan, you can use GrooveIP to make/receive calls over wifi. You will need a strong data connection though. Its best to stand near the router. You will need a Google Voice number to use with GrooveIP over wifi. In summary you will need: Google Voice number + Google Voice app + GrooveIP or Talkatone + strong wifi signal
You can also use the Hangouts App to text and video call people over wifi. The people you are contacting will need a gmail account and have the hangouts app open and running on their phone or computer.

Ok thank you, that really helped. I will probably end up using talkatone just because it has good call quality even on 3G. At least that was was it said on that article you linked. Now on the talkatone website( http://www.talkatone.com/ ), It shows an iPhone that has talkatone and he sent a picture message to someone else and he also received a video message from someone else. Does this mean that you can send mms through talkatone only.

I don't know much about talkatone I have never used it. As far as I know the only carrier or data provider that has had success with pic messages via a Google Voice number is Sprint. Doesn't work anywhere else.
Other people using the talkatone app may be able to receive pic/vid messages through talkatone but not if you send via a GV number. Possibly if you are sending via some other type of method or account. Not totally sure.
edit deleted fb link it was an old link

Ok thank you. Can you please close this thread because I do not know how to do it.
Glad to help. I think a moderator has to close a thread. But it's OK if it stays open. Someone else may need this info in the future.
