Hi
I'm running google maps on an xda orbit 2 (o2) but can't get the "my location" to work.
Has anyone else got it working okay ? And if so, what settings did you use ? I just got seem to get the gps working on it
Any help appreciated.
Whatever the default settings are after it installs worked fine for me on my HTC Touch Cruise... 'My Location' picks up from the nearest cell tower at first, and after a GPS fix is obtained, it switches over to that.
I have noticed it takes longer with the newer version of Google Maps; and sometimes exiting and restarting the program seems to speed the whole process up. I've also tried running QuickGPS just before running Google Maps, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
Thanks for the reply.. its amazing, i steped outside my door and it worked fine lol couldn't believe how accurate it is as well, esp when moving in a car, left up all the time..
Hey all, I picked up my Fuze yesterday at a local AT&T store, and I'm really happy with it with the exception of one thing: I can't get the GPS to work. I've downloaded Google Maps Mobile, installed it. I ran QuickGPS to download the latest satellite data, and Google Maps still just sits there and says "Seeking GPS Satellites (0)..."
Any ideas or any settings I need before this works?
SOLUTION:
If you've installed AT&T Navigator, uninstall it. Be sure to call 611 and make sure that you were not charged the GPS service charge on this month's cycle.
Either the HTC guy didn't know his stuff, or this just happens to work around the "Telenav-Only" Block.
I've successfully gotten repeated locks on Google Maps without the use of Telenav. It's not even installed. Here's the procedure to get a (relatively) fast GPS lock:
If you don't already have it, download Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3 (or newer) (see here: http://touchxperience.com/en/advanced-configuration-tool.html) (needs .Net Compact Framework 3.5. see here: http://www.modaco.com/content/windo...act-framework-3-5-without-upgrading-your-rom/).
In the Advanced Configuration Tool go to GPS. Make sure the subsettings are as follows: (the last one is 32KB if you were wondering)
Assisted GPS: Enabled
Log file: \windows\GPSLogFile.txt
Old log file: \windows\GPSLogFileBack.txt
Max. log file size: 32768
Next, download and install GPS Test 1.04 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=129672&d=1226619670)
Now, every time after a soft-reset (or each day) you want to use the GPS, perform the following actions:
Run QuickGPS and download new satellite info.
Run GPS Test (ensure that GPS settings are on COM4 and a baud rate of 38400).
GPS Test will give you a bar and a signal strength indicator for each satellite. The fix process can take a couple minutes, but just give it some time. Upon getting a 3D lock, it will display "GPS Running".
At this point, you can exit GPS Test and open up Google Maps, TomTom, Garmin, iGo, whatever map tool you use. The navigation app should get a quick (< 30 seconds) fix with anywhere from 7-10 satellites depending on location. It will continue to do this until a long duration of time has passed (I'm talking 5-10 hrs (haven't tested)) or until a Soft-Reset.
This procedure worked for me. I don't know if it'll work for everybody, but I think it's pretty reasonable, the wait time isn't too long for a GPS fix. Good luck and god speed, gentlemen. Let me know if this works for y'all or not.

Mine does too - I think you may want to check out the numerous GPS threads on here on how people corrected theirs. I have been busy doing other stuff to worry about the GPS, so I haven't tried any of their advice, but there are Tons of threads on the GPS issue.
i'll look into it, although i didnt think it was the same issue...

Mine works, but so far only at home sitting in an east-facing window. Have you tried calling HTC Support? I called about another matter and got an answer right away. The US number is: 866-449-8358.
Let us know how you make out if you call!

Most people are just complaining about lag, but there are a few posts about people having trouble getting a fix. It looks like tomtom and the gps tool are trying, but they just won't get a fix. I even stood outside in the cold for 30 minutes, and it never would work. I made all the changes with advanced config and also the manual registry changes... pretty much every suggestion I've found in all the other threads, but nothing works. If I happen to come across a solution, I'll definitely pass it on... but I'm less than optimistic at this point.
I had the same issue - I grabbed the Diamond TomTom cab (from diamond forum - no maps needed) and was able to see the progress of locking in the satelites.. It took about 10 minutes of the phone sitting outside to get a lock for GPS. Now that it has locked once (I have rebooted several times btw) it seems to pick up the lock a lot faster.
And.. I have not tweaked my GPS settings and a-gps is still enabled.
The GPS is a little shotty if you ask me.. I'm sure something will be changed in software down the road to speed up getting a lock.
I have the same issue
Google maps just keeps timing out
google maps wont work for me
Not sure if this will help or not, but I had mucked with my GPS com port settings (under Settings, GPS Settings).
For Programs: Com4
For Hardware: (None)
Baud Rate 4800
For Access: Manage GPS automatically (recommended) --- Is checked.
In Google Maps, I have the "Managed by Windows" radio button selected.
Doing that allowed me to pull up the satellites in about 10 mins the first time, then a lot more quickly after that.
I have no idea what that actually did, but it made GPS work in google maps for me.
I think it would be a good idea to get a program that shows you GPS lock status, so you can see which satellites are detected and their signal strength. Other than that, just leave the phone outside with a clear view of the sky for a little while and see what happens.

I had the same problem at work. I think GPS will work outside. Mine started working with Google Map and Live Search when I was driving.
If that still doesn't work, try install at&t navigator. Maybe it will unlock the GPS.
GPS solution
Hi all I spoke with HTC and you need to download and enable Telenav to activate the GPS. It did not ask me to sign up there is basic turn by turn once it is downloaded and gives you the option to upgrade. Once telenav was installed google maps found satelites within 30 seconds. hope this helps
Ah, that explains why it worked for me -- when I bought my Fuze, I let the salesman sign me up for the 30-day free trial of Telenav. I expect to cancel it, but I was curious to see what it was like.
Same worked for me. I tried the 30 day free trial and now the GPS works. TeleNav doesn't even seem that bad since it checks traffic for you...
No GPS lagging behind reporting your position like the TP?
I have not seen any lag. it is very quick
so basically telenav unlocks the gps and then after one use, it unlocks the gps for use with tomtom or garmin?

Man this seems kind of shady on At&ts part...

Seriously. Didn't you ask why?. Or question this since its an apparant marketing ploy. I heard the same for tomtom. It took my gps a while to to get the first time but after then it locked significantly faster.
i agree, it is shady, but in the end, it works. i got a perfect signal (locked into 6 satellites) with google maps, almost instantly (after connecting once with telenav).
its smart on at&t's part, but now i'm going to look at the cab and see if i can find what makes it work!
can anyone upload the telenav app so i can unlock my gps. i dont have the stock rom anymore(changed to natf rom) and telenav isnt on there.
So I know a lot of us (probably you if you're reading) have had tons of problems with the GPS regardless of ROM vesrsion. I've tried several ROMS (currently using Romeros (great)) and several radios (currently .28).
And here's what I've found. GPS will almost never work - except if ATT Nav is running. Then it works every time. However, as we all know, once you log into the Nav - you're being charged. This brings me to my quesiton. Have any of you Moderators / Hackers tried seeing what's in the ATT Nav that's enabling the GPS. I spoke to HTC today and they told me that the phone was designed NOT to work unless ATT Nav is running in the background. So what's that program doing to activate the GPS. And (and I'm not sure if this is how it works) couldn't we just install the app, and take a picture of the used dll's and registry changes to see what it's actually doing - and write a small program to do the same thing?
Thanks,
BZ
My GPS works without even having ATT Nav installed. It just takes awhile to 'warm up'. When I'm planning to use the GPS I will just fire up my map program, iGo or Google Maps and wait. It takes about 2 minutes to start working and then I get good GPS signal until I'm done.
i dont think this is true, since people with the unlocked/unbranded touch pro are having the same gps issues.

Same here. I go out to start the car and the nav program (CoPiolot or google maps) and come back in a couple minutes. THe GPSTest app doesn't seem to get it started any sooner, just tells you what sats it's seeing and the signal strength of each.
Regis
There is a whole thread on this subject with a cab file called GPS Tweaks.cab in it. Installing that CAB file fixed all my GPS issues .. Google, Windows Live Search, iNav all make proper use of the GPS now.
My gps works with google maps..
Launch quickgps, run google maps, it picks up sats in 1-3 mins.
ATT Fuze, stock rom, google maps
having gone through Advanced Configs and changed a few settings on the GPS, my GPS seems to be working perfectly within reason of a GPS on a phone. As long as i am outside or by the window, i get at least 4 sats in no more than 1 minute. most of the times, it is accurate to at least 20 feet if i am not in fast motion (car speed)
No problems here. Stock ROM, never installed AT&T Nav, takes about a minute or so to warm up, and loads Google Maps and Liver Search quickly. Very accurate - right down to standing under a tree in a park.
There's nothing to what you are saying - it must be a coincidence. It's been proven that the GPS is not locked to AT&T Navigator.
Ive noticed that some people when have mentioned using Quick gps to improve their gps. One the telus version there is no quick gps could someone either post or let me know where to get a version that would work well with the telus tp2
Yes, please!
try here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550973
I don't see it there
i also dont see it there.
Enjoy. Googled and found within a 5min
I tried all sorts of methods and cabs and none worked.
Finally success with the following
Hard reset
Install trial 30 day Telus navigator (gps works)
Install Google Maps 4.1 (gps works - fast location of satellites)
I am planning to cancel the Telus Navigator service. I don't know if that means I will actually have to uninstall it on the phone. If not then hopefully Google Maps will continue working.
If you would like to do the above, try it without a hard reset first. It might work without one (if not redo with the hard reset)
This worked for telus after many other trials. It might with with other carriers paid for GPS service. The paid for services seem to make all sorts of settings adjustments on the phone.
For what it's worth, my Telus TP2 works just fine with agps and gps in the sky. I use Google Maps and TomTom 7 for GPS. Google Maps gets a location quick with agps, and will usually within 2 minutes lock a real GPS signal. TomTom7 takes a few mins to lock usually too depending on the weather.
I've not done anything fancy to my phone either. Just running Medium Hill Titanium ROM.
Hi all, I am experiencing a bit of a strange problem that I have only seen duplicated here http://forums.verizon.com/t5/PDA-Sm...6;jsessionid=CA9AC87365188A46401DEAC053629BFF
My issue is that no matter what I try (including exchanging my phone for another new tp2) I can not get my gps to acquire satellite locks in bing or google maps. My location is on, my gps settings are all correct, always use quick gps and still nothing. The best I ever got was using gps viewer I managed to "see" up to 6 satellites at a time but never got a location or a lock...usually it sees 1-3 at a time and they fade in and out quickly. Still google maps has never shown anything but (0) satellites....UNTIL! I found the link above and called tech support. He informed me that because I was a prior alltel customer that I could not activate vz navigator (even for testing purposes) and I would have to switch my plan to allow this.
After reading the above forum link I called BS and proceeded to install VZ navigator and activate the free 1 day trial without issue. VOILA! I get an instant gps lock..full navigation (not just a-gps) and I can even turn off vz navigator and all of my 3rd party apps receive the same reception and all get locks near instantly.
I know some of you geniuses out there can figure out what and why this is happening. Also I would like to note that although I never ran vz navigator on them, I did reflash to 2 different roms and had no luck with gps lock either.
Here is my basic info in case it is relevant.
Rom version 1.18.605.12
Date 8/15/09
Radio 1.88.07WV
PRL 40059
I refuse to believe that I will have to pay for something that should be unlocked and free OR that if I want to use a different program that I will have to start and run VZ nav first.
Have you used the QuickGPS tool provided by verizon? I used this and the GPS then worked instantly. I never used VZ navigator
Yes. As I stated in my first post, I used quickgps each time with no luck. I again today tried before my trial ran out and vz navigator is the key to my gps receiving a signal.
I am having this same issue. I stood out in a blizzard today for 15mins to try and get a signal with no luck. Although I have not tried VZ nav to try and get a signal...I cant stand VZ nav anyways...
I'm not sure if I should be puzzled, or happy?...but suddenly my gps works!
After my vz nav demo ran out I noticed that the gps went right back to the same broken state, and was that way for a couple days until I finally just gave up playing with it, until yesterday when a co-worker asked if I could get directions to a supply house we were driving toward... I said "well yes, and no" so I fired up google maps and before the map loaded I saw "gps active" then "(8)" and it tracked me in less than 4 sec. Since then my gps has locked every time with every program, even inside my house.
Trust me im glad that everything is working now, but my question is... why? Very random, and I hope it doesnt stop working again, even though I powered it off several times just to make sure.
Sometimes there is no answer as to why. Could just be a glitch. I had a very similar problem in that Remote Desktop wouldn't work unless I had Internet Explorer loaded in the background. Sounds similar to your problem but with different hardware/software. Anyway the problem went away when I flashed my phone to MightyROM. Hope this helped!
