Restricting startup apps for good - foolproof system needed - battery drain issue - XPERIA X10 Themes and Apps

Hi
I have the battery drain issue which is plastered all over this forum. I have tried to tweak systems to the limit but still unable to resolve the problem for good. Juicedefender is $hit as it messes up the APN. I used a few programs to stop apps from starting on phone boot up, they dont woirk. I saw one that explicitly said "will try to restrict this app from startup". How vague is that?
I want to be able to set certain apps from never starting up unless I click on them. I want to have them installed but only start on request. What is the best app to manage apps from never starting up on boot?
I have the following apps always starting up. I never require them but they are nice to have when I need them.
1. com.sonyericson.learningclient
2. wiper app (Dont know what this is for)
3. face rcognition service
4. Google partner setup (what is this)
5. timescape provider
6. SNS provider (no idea what this is)
7. Easy tether
8. syncmypix
9. Photoshop.com mobile
10. Task Panel
11. My Backup Pro
12. BBC news
13. Last.Fm
14. Wikitude
15. Maps
16. Moxier Mail
17. My Uploads (dont know what this is)
18. Sony Ericson Sync
How can I stop all of these apps from ever starting? What app can best manage this?

can you tell me where to get it? i can't find the pro version on the market, not even when i scan this QR-Code.

Im assuming you are not rooted.
Most effective method would be,
Root your phone
remove moxier like apps that you never use.
other apps you wanna keep, install Startup Manager
Configure all the apps you dont wanna start.
If you dont have root
Install Startup Auditor and configure keep disabled option. note that this is not effective as root option.
Some apps you mentioned should not disabled. or you have the freedom to remove. pls use search most of the processes have been discussed here.

I used Startup Auditor some times ago, but i felt my phone slowed down & lagged. Removing Startup Auditor helped

well i don't wanna change the starting apps. fast reboot force closes all apps at once and frees a lot of ram. it's like a reboot of your phone and it works perfect for me. my x10 was never that smooth and fast before. but i want to exclude some apps from being closed, such as alarm clock, setcpu and battery indicator. that's only possible in pro version, which i cannot find on market.
so, does anyone has a link or an idea how to get it (legally, if possible)? or can you check if fast reboot pro is available at your region?

Finally found Fast Reboot Pro. It's way more efficient than Task killers in my opinion. If it's really not at the market anymore (like i experienced) and if it is ok with forum rules, i could upload the apk.

Hey thanks for the advice, it's really back on the market! But only since one or two days, i searched madly before and didn't find it anywhere, also QR-Code didn't work.
So wingz85, please buy it if you want it. I also did that now!

Apps randomly starting in the background?

I use advanced task killer and minutes later I see MP3 Store, and Messages running. Before I saw a few others. Are they set to start running in memory for some reason? Not sure if they eat up much juice, but I wonder if I can make a list of certain ones and disable their start up somehow. Is there a task killter that blocks startups?
same here we need something to block these apps
Messages is required to recieve MMS (Even if you use handcent or chomp or something else as your main client). We tried removing that once in the hero forums and it caused ALL sorts of problems and force closes)
The mp3 store is usually ok to remove though.

Thanks codemonk,
Do you know that setting in advance task killer is that says "auto kill level"? It is set to disable now, but what does it do? Thanks.

I'm not sure...I avoid task killers as a rule (I installed one earlier to test something for an earlier thread and uninstalled afterwards once I got my info).
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/ - This should provide some good info on it.
The better solution, especially for apps that you don't intend on using, is uninstalling the app (there's a whole thread talking about which ones are safe to remove).

yeah, that is a great idea. I imagine if I wanted it back I could just install it again. Thanks Codemonk.
Why do you need those apps not running? Android will kill them if it needs more memory.
Why are people obsessed with killing stuff? It's not like your phone runs better with 192mb of free memory vs 163mb...
it actually does, as well as lets the battery last longer since it isnt using as much processing power

Let the phone run for a good 12 hours. I was down to 42MB free basically idling and only using Handcent. Killed a few tasks and back up to 175 and everything is snappy again.
I don't like having to use a task killer, I didn't have to with my N1.
maybe there will be an app like Scotty for windows 7. I check and a bunch of bloatware starts on it's own. It's all marketing bs. When there is a nice root stripped down, with all the nice stuff enabled I'll do that.
download startup auditor from the market. great little app to select and unselect which apps you want to load when the phone powers up. only costs $0.99 usd

So if I leave it to no apps, will it load up with 0 apps running? Will it also prevent apps from randomly starting after phone is already on? Sounds like a nice app.
Unless startup auditor disables the service there is a list of apps that will randomly start up at times. I went into the application settings and apps like MP3 store don't have an option to uninstall.
I have used task killer to kill all apps and within minutes some start again.
"thecodemonk" why do you not use a task killer. I have only had an Android phone about 24 hours now and got a lot to learn.
First thing being how to enable tethering.
I have mine set to "safe" and it auto closes things when screen goes black.
Make sure you "IGNORE" certain apps... like the clock or else your alarm wont work... I almost over slept
I have the following set to ignore:
Messages
Handcent
clock
gmail
Mort Music player
Fastbright
Check out the application "Autokiller." This comes with preset values (optimum, moderate, aggressive, etc.) so that apps will be killed off once your free memory drops below a certain point. This app works great, but it does REQUIRE root to function and must be rebooted to finish applying the settings. Also lists all apps, processes, and services which can be killed off manually as well.

It is in market, search "autokiller". Requires root access, but I can confirm it is working fine.
Wanted to add that I am annoyed by programs that I never intend to use running in the background. From recovery I used Android Commander to quickly select and delete every .apk in /system/app that I never wanted to see again.
Helo guys saw this topic and was over at androidcentral and saw this article which talks about an app that would kill any app that autostarts.
won't let me post links as i'm a new user, but go to androidcentral and look for the article about the app autostarts or just google "autostarts"
using task panel to kill the "junk" like amazon and mp3 store- also any program that doesnt attach itself to things like facebook or messages - i use skyfire so i have set that to autokill but leave the "internet" running..
i also use this to switch between apps running.. having to hit back back back or even going to home then program list then finding it is a long process.. for example ...
i get a handcent message - go into the threaded sms- type and im done - holding down the home screen doesnt pop all the programs up - therfor i set task panel up to stay on my status bar and hit it then go to the program i want.

[Q] Apps Restarting

I recently upgraded my ATT Captivate to 2.2. I now have a problem with apps starting up on there own even though I've going into apps management and have killed them. I even have app killer and its not automatically killing the apps. These aren't the att apps, these are apps that I've installed.
How can I prevent apps from starting back up. Its killing my battery life.
Thanks

Get os monitor and check how much mem they use. If u see one that is always over 20%, uninstall it.
Also u can stop ur running services.

What BW said. Don't worry about them in there unless you find one using up too much battery/resources. They won't drain your battery unless it's a bad app.

You could try unistalling your task killer and getting Advanced Task Killer (it's the one I personnaly use). Now killing a app won't stop it from restarting, you usually fix that in your running services. Also make sure that these apps arent widgets - in that case they will always restart

Actually, its Advanced Task Killer that I have installed. Yes, I totally understand apps vs. services. I'm stopping the services for the apps that have restarted, yet they continue to restart after the service has been killed. These apps are definitely not widgets.

Umm, may I ask what are these apps?
The only app that takes couple tries for me to stop if the facebook one. Also, some app are made to constinusly refresh and get info from the internet. If that's the case with your apps, block their internet connection or change their settings to have it refresh manually.
Also, you can tell some apps not to start on boot up - that might temporaly fix your problem.

I duno about colornote but as for the others, they automaticly refresh using the internet and so like I said in my other post, you have to set it so the either can't access the internet (might as well unistall them in that case) or set their refresh to manual so it only refreshes when you "tap" on them.
Google maps refreshes for your location. That one will be a pain especially if you have the gps on.
If you get over a day of battery life with moderate usage and that you like these app, then I'd say to just live with it. If it's not the case, I suggest getting rid of them but if OS Monitor doesn't show them using your mem/battery, then they don't actually do/change much.

once on the app, hit your menu button (bottom left one ) and you should have a setting option - each app will be different but it mostly comes to the same thing. Also if you don't have any menu option, there should be a (i) kind of image/icon somewhere in the main app page but these are rare. Most app will have their setting menu.
Thanks. I'll try it and see what happens.

[APP 2.3+] 3C Toolbox (aka Android Tuner)

Dear users,
Considering all 3C apps are now based on the same source code, they all behave the same way, and will exhibit the same issues. Any queries will also likely applies to all apps.
To make my life easier while continuing to provide support here (and start with a clean slate), I decided to close all my app threads and open a fresh new thread here.
With your continuous help and support, the past 4 years have been a great adventure and experience. Let's take a fresh start and continue this amazing adventure.
Thank you all!
*** See at the end of this post on how to get support for any issues ***
The most comprehensive toolbox to save battery, tweak, tune, backup, secure and monitor any Android devices running any ROMs, any kernels.
What is 3C Toolbox
Replaces 20+ apps easily worth 30€ for the price of a couple of beers!
NB: Starting with version 1.0.3, Android 2.2.x and 2.1.x are no longer supported. App supports Android 2.3 and above, including Android L preview.
Safest root app on Play Store: I run the app and all its features on at least 4 devices every day, and change 3 of them frequently for testing purposes. With about 250.000+ actual users, it's pretty safe to assume the app is very safe. App can create a reset package to disable all system tweak features from CWM/TWRP at any time. App has automatic fallback in case of boot loops while re-configuring the CPU.

Please explain this in a support request from app settings, help and support so we can provide the appropriate option to use in 'mA retrieval method' of battery / monitoring settings and add out-of-the-box support for your device. All necessary information is provided in the request's attachments.
◊ How to get support for any other issues
Please send a support request from app settings, help and support. You need to clearly explain your issue, attach any relevant screenshots showing where and how the issue occurs. I will not provide any support here.
All I ask is to provide reasonable details for me to be able to help, empty requests are mostly trashed, I keep one requests per device for the sake of a possible source of information for how the app supports things, to possibly fix things too or compare between variants of the same device.
For example a support request contain the following (you can check the content before sending it!),
all discovered SD cards, very useful for any related issues, including the mentioned read cache stuff.
app installation path and configuration, for xposed, battery, cpu, tweaks, apps or task managers problems.
battery history and configuration for any battery problems.
CPU configuration for CPU problems, including thermal, mp, voltage, etc
The idea is that you explain the observed issue, possibly add a screenshot so that I know exactly where to look for (app has 100+ screens and sometimes words don't mean the same for you and me), and there I can really do a good job at helping you.
PS: And so you know, I hate liars, insults, disrespect and myself. So please try to avoid those when requesting support.
Actually if you want support, posting the whole support request content, the screenshot and details here should be ok. Doing otherwise, I'll either ignore you completely or send you elsewhere very quickly, you want to leave me a one star rating, so be it: developing is my passion and I love it, you want my help, do it the right way or don't at all. I don't develop for stars, I develop for fun.

Thanks and congratulations for your new app

I've updated the first post with more information about that. Will publish an updated APK to ask user permission before installing it within the next hour.
EDIT: Didn't expected you guys to be so quick while I finalize the publishing of all required information.
By the way, the uninstall process can't uninstall other stuff, but as a rooted device, you should have no problem getting rid of this APK.
Please try the new APK published a minute ago (available in a couple of hours) that will allow you to refuse the APK installation.

Yes, just contact me with the order lists (bmw, system tuner and the new android tuner) and I'll refund old apps. This is the migration plan I'm working on.
EDIT: As of December 20th, 2013, direct refunds on Play Store are no longer possible. This was the only available way to offer discounts in a decent way. PayPal was an alternative available until February 2014, but it was abandonned because of the complexity, 30+% extra fees and the lack of global support (some countries could not receive refunds).

Yes, high price for now to avoid users who just try any apps and put comments after a few minutes of testing. And also to be able to offer discounts by refunding old apps paid version.
Nevertheless there will be updates on existing apps (not everyone wants an all in one app) with existing improvements, except features that require additional permissions.
Do you think youll ever add ability to spoof app permissions? And let user input the value... This would be an ultimate feature!

I'm looking into this actually, along with a smart "renicer", but both requires hacking Android or every APK to monitor and it turns out to be very complex.
There's 3 existing solutions on Market today:
- Hacking of Android class loader, as done by LBE Security app.
- Hacking of APK installed, as done by SRT Guard
- Patching the ROM like PDroid does.
They all have their advantages and problems, but the APK hacking seems the best option to go for as it results in a more stable experience, not as dependent on Android version as the 2 others and probably less disruptive as LBE can be when it messes up one's device. But then I'm not sure an APK can actually be installed properly
That said, I'm still looking into the first solution hacking app loading directly.

Yes it is compatible. When did it lag? After requesting to install the system app or at some other times?
When lagging, the OS usually creates a file in /data/anr/traces.txt. If you experience a new lag, you can send it to me, possibly using the support request feature in the app settings. You can then attach a file to the newly created email.
When it comes to lags (or ANRs for that matter), logcat is useless. It only mentions a reference to the traces.txt file

To me (if I'm wrong it's all user error) the system apk it was requesting to install (it appeared to me) was for ics/jb, so I refused the install. Your app kept requesting to install the extras. After a little thought - is the extra apk mandatory? No intention to cause any concern if what I'm experiencing is nonsense. I have not rated your app on the play store.
It lagged randomly.

The extra APK is now only for specific toggles as I manage to find a different work around for the JB logcat issue. Those toggles include the APN (mobile data), background data (this one's obsolete), debug mode, unknown sources, gps and wifi localization. The 1 useful toggles is for GPS though.
Until you press 'do not ask again', the app would continue to request the APK installation ;(
As for the lags you're experiencing that seems like a bug. Have you found any trace.txt in /data/anr directory by any chance?
It's just fair to be concerned with things like that, I can understand. But installing an app requesting 35 permissions, then granting root access to that app and then being scared about a 40Kb APK being installed on /system folder is quite funny actually.
If I may make this comparison, it's like letting a heavily armed man (the 35 permissions+root) in your home and then being worried being he is hiding a wallet (the 40Kb apk) in your home!
Anyway, bad comments always call for improvements

Anyway, bad comments always call for improvements

Seems permissions are about the same as some system apps. the taces.txt is up for you. Hope it does something helpful. Thanks for the app. I had sent a PM with the information about the purchases. I do not use google wallet.
Awesome news that you are working on user defined app permissions. I really hope you can find a good work around. And I do currently use SRT appguard in conjuction with Android Tuner and I did notice it seems to handle disabling app permissions pretty good. The only downside is that you won't get app updates from market but that's not a big deal to me. I think if you can get the spoofing action to work, a lot of people are going to want your app. There are plenty of times I haven't downloaded an app because I didn't like it's permissions. So being able to control them without breaking the app will be a dream come true.

[Q] how do I keep Samsung Music from auto launching in the background?

This is more of an annoyance than anything else, but when I start the mighty 12.2 ( I'm rooted and running the debloated ROM ) the Samsung Music app always comes up as running in the background. Being a power saving geek, I go turn it off, and move on with my day but it would be nice to just not have it run at start up. It is not listing in the xPosed module Bootmanager, and I don't know another way to kill it off from auto starting. Is this some essential core app I should just leave alone or is there another way of preventing it's auto run? thanks!
I'm a Google music user so what I did was freeze the music service in titanium backup. Problem solved for me. Unless you need it, freeze it.

Thank you for the quick reply, much appreciated
Glad to know it's not just mine, then. Saves me the trouble of doing a reset.
if you use it, check out an app called AutoStart Check.. it allows you to sort by either process/permission (Like when starts, when x launches, etc) or you can sort by app and see each autostart process per app and you can kill each specific one.. like you can go in and just disable the autostart on start up and then leave the rest so if you want that process to start when it does, then your set, or disable them all and it only starts when you physically launch the app.. ive been using it for a while and love the app.. helps keep stuff i dont want running when i dont want them..

op7pro without google

Greetings,
Since the begginning I use all my android device without google. I know that this phone is new, not so many rom out there, I can't wait to have one, where we can flash gapps separate.
But til that, I deciced to delete all google staff manually (except for gboard, as I can't find any decent keyboard).
I'm not sure, but I guess for this decision I have some issues. All the apps with a built in browser force close or don't react if I wanna use its browser. Some other apps won't even start. (Not even says any "missing google play services msg")
My question is, how can I make sure what cause the problem, plus how I need to do properly to skip google?
I deleted gapps with titanium backup.
I have also an ancient galaxy s4 on lineage, only rom, there these things work like a charm. (With its limited speed )
Or do u think there's gonna be option soon to do only rom for the phone?
Plus if u have the same "googless" system on any device, please share with me how u do with google pendent apps, which play store alternative u use etc..
Thanks

Might be the webview, it defaults to chrome. look into developers option/ webview implementation and ensure its set to Android System instead of Chrome. That may solve part of the problem

Yes, that was my first guess as well, but as i deleted google, the only option is the android system, so nothing to do there, its set on that. Also checked on the s4, just by curiosity, it has exactly the same version, therefore this part should be fine.
Thanks

I would start over and go gradually removing stuff and testing starting form the mist insignificant to the most complicated ones like services and framework, etc
Perhaps you want to look also into the tomato debloater thread. They have some tested scripts to remove google apps
Yeah that could be an idea, at some point that will be the next step.
I looked for this tomato db, it also gets closer to my idea, but til i don't find out the thing u mentioned, i'm not sure about it, as it's not 100% google free. Though sure i'll do the invisible option.
Plus there r some things in the extreme, that i'm okay with, like ambient screen for example. My dream is to have fully optimised and stable rom, that use all the benefits, what this exact device can offer, + tweak options, but obviously without all the trash, + without gapps. Y they don't just let us choose if we want netflix for example?
Apart from this, i really don't get, y stock roms don't give basic option, like disable pop up notifications. Such a little option, but so useful.
I wish i knew how long it takes to make these clean roms, but in case if not soon, i'll go for this options what u wrote, thank u
Is there any way to have push notification?
(And i know it's nothing to do with google, but also if you know how to disable popups, please share with me as well)

I havent had chrome, ok google, google, and all google related stuff for years. I have deleted them with titanium backup always, even on my op 7 pro. I only have playstore and use brave instead of chrome. No issues so far

I did the same, but includeing paly services, framework.., all. I use apkpure store, now i even managed the the system webview to work. Not the one built in, that did't work, no matter what i did. From magisk i found something systemless webview, that does the job.
The only thing i miss is the push notification. (And block popup). Im shocked that no solution so far, that's y we like android. But with some things they look to move on the way of ios.
