Does anyone have a working .apk for Swype? I've heard that the Incredible version does not work, and I'd like to have a compatible version ready when I get my EVO this week.
IDIOT-PROOF GUIDE:
1. Go to settings, and select Applications.

}
2. Check the box to "allow installation of non-Market applications."
3. NOTE: Some of these may be expired. Make sure you check the thread for newer downloads! Download the latest beta version here. If that doesn't work, you can download this older version using the web browser of your choice (NOTE: Dolphin Browser HD seems to have some problems downloading .apks, so try the stock browser before posting about an error), or download it to your PC and transfer it to your SD card. Or can download any of the Nexus One/Droid Incredible custom versions found here.
4. Navigate to the previously downloaded file using a file explorer like EStrong File Explorer or ASTRO click it.
5. Click "Install" to install.
6. Go back to the settings menu and click "Language & Keyboard."
7. Check the box next to Swype. Accept the prompt that pops up.
8. Open up any text field (text message, quick search, address bar, etc), and long press on the field.
9. Select "Input Method" from the pop-up.
10. Select "Swype" from the choices.
11. Start Swyping! Here is a video of the basics:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKSSOl4f9RA
QUICK SWYPE FAQ:
Q: How do I add a word to the dictionary?
A: Tap the word out like a normal keyboard, then either a) just hit space, or b) press the Swype key.
Q: How do I remove a word from the dictionary?
A: Select and highlight ONLY the word that you wish to remove and press the Swype key. Follow the prompt to remove the word.
Q: How do I easily move the cursor location like the arrows on the HTC keyboard?
A: Drag your finger from the Swype key to the SYM key right next to it to get the interface with arrows to pop up.
I too am curious about this...I can't live without it!

Thats funny - I installed it on my EVO and it displayed but it swyped jibberish when I tried to use it. Kinda like the overlay on the display was not synced with the screen properly.
Just downloaded the N1/Incredible version, and it works fine for me!

so your saying that the linked version that was posted a few posts up works perfectly on your HTC EVO?? no probs what so ever?? you just installed it and it worked as in it didn't ask you if you'd agree it to record your key strokes like i've heard?? Just curious b/c I love the swype keyboard and want to use it!!
I only tried a few sentences with it, but it worked fine. A coworker played with it for a little longer, and while he had a hard time using it, it was his first time trying Swype. Filing it under user error rather than program error.
Used the apk from post #3, from ajftl.

So you just installed that file from post #3 and then it was there under the kb selection when you go to write and email/sms and thats it?? easy to install??

I take no credit for making the keyboard work for our devices. I also didn't come up with the fix for the & key.
Thanks goes to zack.xtr we now have a WORKING black multi-touch keyboard. Want to also thank bmtdan for showing me zack.xtr's post. Black keyboard is attached, all credit goes to zack.xtr.

This is just a small mod someone posted they wanted, when the keyboard was first released, for Evo. They wanted the highlight to be green, so I made it green. As far as speed, I can't increase anything to make you type faster. In my opinion I type faster on this key board with less mistakes.

I'm trying to make the buttons and background black. It's my understanding (from modding the Omnia keyboard, on windows mobile) that xml files control the color of the letter on the keyboard. If it is like Windows, then there is a string in one of the xml documents. Inside the apk there are different xml documents, just can't figure the right one out, and what would control what.

thanks

EDIT: Oh my gosh! Featured on Droid-life.com! Sorry to disappoint guys, but I don't really know what I'm doing. Someone is probably going to have to take over from here or I'll need to learn a little bit more.
EDIT2: Attempted to get settings working. Failed. Looks like this is the end of the line for me. :| I would always be interested if someone would like to work with me on how to do it though!
Yea, the official one works well too. Would love to see someone rip the version from the EVO with the 4-way arrows on the bottom since the DroidX has no direction pad or mouse wheel.
The four arrow keys would be nice, but the red bullseye lets you easily move the cursor around (similar to the iPhone) and you can set the volume keys to move it left/right too, which is plenty good for me

Hey, did you get a chance to see the Vib issue? well not issue, but to have it off? The Droid X seems to be a rougher and more vibrant vib, well it is Moto, theyre know for that.
I am Patiently waiting, The main thing that is missing, is the Touch Input menu, thats where we change, Well, for the Evo KB.
So I have been thinking about how to write, how to install instructions. Some people can just extract the flashable zip folder, while others (myself included) have to flash it.
INSTALLYou can try one of two ways......... Extract the zip file, go to the sub folder /system/app, and install the "LatinIME.apk; or reboot into recovery and flash the zip file. Also, after I flashed the first time.... I wanted to delete it. So, I used adb commands. Now I can just install from memory card. I think once you get the file located in /system/lib in to /system/lib on the phone..... you can just delete the keyboard using adb commands, then just install from sd
CREDIT for the port goes to invisiblek. I have made the vibration stronger and fix the & key every where it is neeeded to be fixed. Also i have to thank zack.xtr for helping me with the 2.1 version. With his help I could do it by myself this time around. O yeah, I have to say thank you to bmtdan for pointing me to zack.xtr's post.
Even though it shows ". ," on the period key, it will NOT make a comma on a double tap. I had updates some xml documents, to see if they controlled this behavior. Turns out they only control what was displayed on the key.

I have just released an application CopyAndPaste in alpha release onto the market if anyone would like to try it out.
The application is one way of solving the issue of selecting text in android. There are a lot of bugs to be worked on, but the main problem is the inaccuracy of the OCR engine. If enough people find the app useful then I will continue to update it and possibly make it open source.
To Do:
multi-touch handles
landscape mode
load on startup of phone
Changelog
v2.1
small fixes
v2.0
Major fixes for all phones (thanks to Napalm)
Shake to launch application option
Image preview of text to verify copy
v1.6
new icons
more settings
apps 2 sd
minor bug fixes
new toggle dock button
video added
v1.0 -1.5
selection to edges
easy to quit
settings menu
make selection handles easier to use
force close issues
launch options (longpress search)
Not working on:
MIUI 11.9
Sony Ericsson x10
Dell Streak
Galaxy s i9000
Update coming December 13

Thanks for testing it out, and I am glad it worked. I will work on a settings menu so that there are options for the status bar and delay time.
Thanks for the feedback and ratings in the market. I have decided to continue development on this application and I am working on an update to fix some small issues right now.
For the people who could not get it to work, please check that you have given the app superuser permissions and let me know if it is still not working.
Works pretty well so far. Some suggestions
Make it so instead of launching from the notification bar, launch from long press search.
Make it so you can select to the edges
Make it easy to completely quit
Might think of more later

Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate the help. I have just released v1.2 which allows the selection to go to the edges and makes it easier to quit. For the next version I am going to add the launch from long press search and also I am working on making the selection handles easier.
Thanks for sharing!

Your welcome, and thank you for trying it out. How did you find the application?
Just added another update:
1) completely re-designed the handles now they work in 4 way directions and you can use them without covering the center with your finger. 2) fixed some force close issues people were having.
3) option to launch it from longpress search
4) many new settings in the preference menu to choose the type of handles for selection
Please post here if it works for you. Thanks for all the suggestions.
- it works for me
- it´s great
thanx for the new app, it´s standard now on my phone.
Edit: sometimes icons stays in statusbar...check/uncheck icon in settings solves this.

Thanks for the helpful comments! I will look into the check/uncheck problem. Right now I have set it to stay in the status bar by default, do you mean that it doesn't come out of the status bar when you uncheck the icon?

The site looks interesting, thanks for the suggestion. I don't think I want to sell this application, I would rather share it with the community for free.
Couldn't get it to copy anything on Miui 11.19

Thanks for trying it out. Was it showing an error, or producing random symbols in the copy field?
How?
Lol, I´m a news writer so I spend some time searching for articles to write in our portal

Oh!
I´ll report later as I´m still testing but it looks promising
Writing an article about it now

It appears that when I start the app and resize the selection box, the initial box that appears stays imprinted until I exit the app or copy the selection. Also it seems to not be able to copy accurately for me, it would get the first few words correctly then it becomes completely gibberish
CM6 Nexus one. It fails to install if CM tries to install to SD card. Installs fine on internal storage. Works great when copying just one line. Starts to get gibberishy after 1-2 lines. Kinda slow to start up. A landscape mode would be awesome. Overall doesn't make me want to throw the phone across the room like the built in copy paste. I will be using it for my copy/paste needs. Please continue developing it.

I will check the selection box, there is probably a problem with the activity. It might be getting gibberish because of the selection that you make. Try to make as small a selection as possible. It might also be a problem with the program, I and do some tests for the next update. Thank you for trying the app, stay tuned for future updates.

I completely forgot to enable apps 2 sd. I will put that in the next version definitely. Landscape mode added to the todo list. Thanks for the suggestions and testing the app.
works fine on a HTC Desire. Thanks and keep developing.
Alright I think alot of us know about Swype on the droid X.
The beta is now open again, for all the android phones out there. It's realy easy to apply, and there's no wait, really, to get the swype keyboard. I myself abso-f**king-lutely LOVE it, because in landscape, the layout is a bit weird but you have a whole hell of a lot more space above the keyboard(all the better for scrolling and selecting your place in the text) plus, for me, even though i blazed on Smart Keyboard, im even faster with Swype.
You can apply for the beta here: http://beta.swype.com/
I don't know how long the beta opening will last. II were you and I wanted this keyboard, I'd go grab it ASAP. It's quite easy to install, by the way. Just make sure that your browser is in Android mode, not Desktop mode.(If it was Dolphin HD. YOu know what I mean, though, right?)
Screenshots coming soon, and will be on another post.
Here are the screenshots!

Here in a little bit I'll post one with smart keyboard pro for the screen space difference.
EDITSCroll down and I have set this up to display them side by side as if you were holding them landscape. A comparison.

yes it's a nice keyboard! I am using from 1.xxx beta's! but they should provide an option to enable/disable smiley/enter and mic button! etc...
otherwise usability at its best!

You should Update it. There's still no disable Option, but when Swyping there's really no need for it, as the space is auto entered and all that, not to mention in my version(the newest, 2.29.71.20203.t100), its not all that space hogging. The engine for it doesnt pick up speech that well on the X10. At least, that's what it's shown me so far. It gets most of it, but for example i said 'be' a few time in testing, and it spat out 'the'.
Also, in my version, there's no smiley key. I think they turned it into a long press somewhere. I'll edit the post after I check.
...Is it really that boring of an input method????
Well, I have something the devs might look at. The site says the keyboard is skin/themeable by OEM's. Not sure what that stands for, but it's interesting. It'd be cool imho to skin it like the sense white letter/saymbol keys and then the delete, enter, symbol and whatnot stay the same.
For anyone who wants it, I'll soon have a video of me using the keyboard posted.
Its been done in the past.

This is a new one though. The beta is back open. Notice, my screenshots are different.
I know its a new one lol i was just saying the skinning has been done in the past and the same templates work on the new one.
I have the newest version 2.29.71.20203.t100 with the skin in the link i posted in my previous post. Just took that skin and replaced the boring blue one with it.
Mind you my version isnt from the beta link above, although i am on the beta list, its from elsewhere with the checks removed. I just added the skin and signed it as the beta from the link wouldnt work even with just images replaced and re-signed obviously.

Ah ok. Could you show me how to do that?
First of all you need a working version (not from the beta link - obv) and secondly a skin which is in one of the XDA forums (cant remember off the top of my head), you might have to google it.
After that its a doddle and i will explain.
Once you have those or i will PM it tomorrow as its late and i have work in the morning. i will show you.
Not sure how to get those.

Does anyone know of any option to move the cursor easily between words? (Like stock keyboard magnifying kind of stuff)
Not sure what you mean.

I mean; a better way to place the cursor in the desired place (you can do that with new stock keyboard; drag in the typed words and above the keyboard another magnified bar comes up to make life easy)

I agree the keys are bigger and better, but sometimes when you swype and it misses one letter in-between, you will find it very difficult to place the cursor there to key in that missing letter.
If possible, please leave a message in the forum, and let me hope it gets implemented.
Thank you.

If i remember correctly you can swype from the "swype" button to the sym button to get the arrows.
just double-tap the incorrect word and it will give you a list of alternatives.

If I remember correctly, it takes few clicks before it shows up the arrows to move the cursor. What I was looking for is something like SE implemented in the stock keyboard (new one).

What's that? I use swype obviously, though still ive never used the stock. USed anysoftkeyboard, then better keyboard, then swiftkey, then smart keyboard pro, then swype. Almost NEVER stock.
And it is possible to double tap on the misspelled word, too.
