[PORT][32A/32B][Old radio]ahmgsk's Eclair 2.1 - EXPERIMENTAL, working 3D (Mar 2nd)

For the last couple of days I've been trying to get Eclair 3D acceleration running on 32A with old radio. I was somehow succesful so I decided to release one Sense based ROM port and one "plain" Eclair. I had succes with other ROMs though (not all of them, but a few). Edit March 2nd - It now seems that it works on 32B/G1 as well, so I've added the porting package for those phones, see below.
This ROM is highly experimental! So bear that in mind. The only testing I've done is here on my own Magic - I am not using any ext3/ext4 partition for app2sd, for example, so I'm not sure how it behaves if you use one.
I've added a few things here and there that are essential to me like Market Enabler, More Locale 2, some ringtone and notification files and mixed in a few files from other Eclair ROMs to get a few things working. I've also changed the default analog clock (the Android widget, not HTC widget) to Pulse clock.
Thanks to:
ahmgsk (obviously), Kingclick, Cyanogen and all the other devs working on his kernel source, Amon_RA, all OpenEclair devs, polyrhytmic, dzo, vilord and many others.
What seems to work:
- 3D acceleration seems to work fine. I can get about 20fps in Neocore benchmark. I've also tested Radiant, Armadillo Roll and iDracula and they all seem to work. 3D Gallery works as well.
- Multitouch works
- Camera works, mostly - no video recording, though. If you take picture, it shows a garbled screen for a moment, but the picture itself is taken just fine.
- GPS and accelerometer work
- LED notifications work, all colors
- Bluetooth MIGHT work, needs testing. But you can enable it.
- Google Sync seems to work just fine
What seems not to work:
- YouTube and video playback in gallery doesn't work at all for now. Sorry.
Known Issues:
- Rather slow on startup. Give it time to start up fully, even after you see the home screen. You may even get a few "App not responding - FC/Wait?" warnings - just click on Wait and give it more time. But after it starts, it seems pretty fast to me. It's no SuperD, but still quite fast, I'd say.
- Live wallpapers are problematic and I'd recommend staying away from them. Some work (not very fast, though), some don't.
- Launcher 2 is problematic. I've kept it in the ROM and it certainly looks nice, but I've had all sorts of problems when I had it enabled, including long phone freezes, terrible lag in applications and other. I'd HIGHLY recommend just using the "normal" launcher (it's "Nexus style" anyway).
Note:
Take this port "as is" 'cause I probably won't support it much. I think of it more as a "proof of concept" that seemed too cool to me not to share it with others, but I don't have enough time to offer full support or work on it much these days. Maybe I'll release another version someday, maybe not. Sorry. I'm just being honest here.

It might, as I don't think the solution here is specific to 32A. I'll maybe try to make a 32B kernel soon and let someone test it. Right now, I've yet to hear about this working for someone else on 32A other than me

You're right, 3D is working
I tried it with SpeedX and Hyper Space, and they both are working. Not as fast as it would on a donut based rom (looks like the frame rate is a little lower) but they are absolutely working.
Launcher2 is still a bit laggy.
Some Live Wallpapers aren't working, they forced the phone to restart.
The gallery is working.
There are some bugs (like pressing the home button while in an app, will sometimes block my phone) that forced me to remove the battery.
This rom is not working enough for a daily use, but you did a great job.
Waiting for a bug fix Imma try the hero port now

BTW, as I've mentioned in the first post, I don't recommend using Launcher 2, it causes all sorts of weird issues with this ROM. And I also mention that live wallpapers are problematic and you should just stay away from them
Oh, and as for the framerates in 3D - in my experience they're actually slightly higher on average than with my own SuperD port I'm now using as a day-to-day ROM (I miss Sense UI, but 1.5 is starting to lag behind on all the interesting stuff, so...).

I'll try to follow the progress of most Eclair ROMs but I'm gonna be quite busy for at least the next week or so, so no promises on any other updates or more ports (but I'd LOVE to have a reliable Sense UI ROM with Android 1.6 or higher, I can tell you that - Kinglick's Eclair Hero is close, but still not close enough to rely on it on day-to-day basis). I'm glad I managed to at least steal the weekend for Android for once and got this working, more or less.

lbcoder: Actually, there's really not much to patch. I've spent countless hours trying to port parts of the Kaiser kernel as discussed in one of the G1 forum threads, yet in the end I've ended up using pretty much just the plain vanilla Cyanogen Eclair kernel sources with only the camera code backported from the Donut sources to get the camera working (but I can certainly provide some kind of diff if need be).
Then there's the permission problem with /dev/msm_hw3dc and /dev/msm_hw3dm that on most Eclair ROMs needs fixing (chmod 666 and chmod 660 in init.rc, respectively).
And then it might or might not be an issue with the contents of /system/lib/egl and /system/lib/hw (and perhaps some other libs as well) which, I'm sorry to say, I've yet to fully test. Those from ahmgsk's AME Eclair seem to work, but looks to me like it's not exclusively just those, that it might work with some others as well. I know it's not very professional (but I've said it many times, I'm no dev and certainly no coder, I'm just determined and persistent ), but I honestly didn't have time to test those different libraries fully, sorry. I was just trying to get something as usable as possible and share it with others so they may perhaps investigate further. Though it somehow amazes me that I of all people got it working when there's so many people with coding and Android knowledge WAY beyond my own here (which is not that hard to achieve, anyway)

its no probs -> but i m glad 32A (old radio) users are getting this. i m working on hero rom i think i can try to get everything working
for now videos and all are working
now some widgets n network is remaining (mostly solved) v2 coming soon

Why? I remember in the original ahmgsk 's ROM they are working as well...
What has been changed from the old to the new Radio/SPL to break the YouTube/Gallery video playback?

As for the "why?", that's a very good question I'd really like to know the answer to.
As for "what has changed" - the kernel has changed (had to for the ROM to work with the old radio) and with it all the "drivers". I'm not happy that YouTube and video doesn't work, but I don't have much time to investigate further right now. And until now, neither did Eclair 3D acceleration with the old radio, so I guess it's still progress.
I'm sure someone will figure it out eventually.

Added links for 32B/G1 porting package. Yes, 3D really seems to work on those phones as well.

I guess I figured it out,
download both zip files, apply zip one, then apply the 2nd one other the other.
replacing files wont work because of the files within the "META-INF" folder

Why is this 100%
There is a fix for *nearly* every problem - just search the thread!
For things there isn't a fix for, there is a workaround that works better
The rest of the problems are problems that cannot be fixed until there is a better leak, we get our hands on the source of the kernel, or Sprint releases something. However, it should be noted that the problems are extremely minimal. Microscopic, even.
EVERYTHING IN THIS ROM IS FUNCTIONAL/SIZE]
There are workarounds to nearly everything. Things that cannot be fixed are problems with the leak itself. There is really no reason not to upgrade to this ROM as far as functionality is concerned - problems are MICROSCOPIC!!! If you believe the Sprint update really is going to come in two weeks, go ahead and use this ROM now! Changing to the official one will be easy!
This thread is 225+ pages long, you CAN and WILL find a fix to find a fix if you look for it!!!
Installation Steps:
-Download whichever ROM you want between Espresso or Normal (Decaf?)
-Rename the file to update.zip and flash like you would any other ROM. Note: it may be a good idea to wipe EVERYTHING!!! You MUST flash if you are coming from a different ROM.
If the ROM fails to boot, wipe your ext partition!!!
To get Apps2SD (Applications are stored on your SD card - must be partitioned!
-PARTITION YOUR SD CARD
MMS Problems?:
-If you have MMS problems, download this: http://damageless.kingspond.com/signed-mms-fix.zip
-Rename to update.zip and flash it to your phone.
-NOTE THAT HANDCENT WILL NOT SEND MMS!!! THIS IS NOT SOMETHING WE CAN FIX!!!
Other reported problems:
-Handcent will not send MMS. This is a problem with every 2.1 ROM and is not something that we can fix.
Tethering:
-Wifi tether is included.
-If you refuse to tether using wifi, you can use EasyTether Lite or something similar that is available in the Market.
Worse signal?
-You do not have a worse signal because of this ROM. It has less bars at the top.
Apps force closing all the time?
-Boot into recovery, go to Other and select the Fix UID option.
Invalid authentication with Google
-There is something wrong that is fairly deep, but it is a problem with the leak of the Eris 2.1 ROM. This only happens when you have a message or voicemail waiting.
Voicemail notification
-Go into the menu, then go to settings, click the call menu and then click Clear Voicemail Notification. Also make sure you change the voicemail service number to your own number!!!
Visual Voicemail
Use Google Voice or Youmail. We need something from Sprint to get Visual Voicemail to work.
Battery Life
Your battery life shouldn't change much. If you are experiencing problems, try the 'airplane mode' fix, and check your CDMA PRL settings.
Other Problems?:
-Try rebooting.
-If that doesn't work, backup your device through nandroid and then wipe everything!
-Search, then post. There are over 1,000 posts here, most likely someone has experienced the same problem as you.

Why won't Handcent send MMS?

Because either you are not on Sprint or you need to apply the fix.

Until we get something from Sprint, this won't work. However, you can use Google Voice or you can use Youmail. Both work great.
My Google Voice doesn't work!

What's Next for this ROM?:
I will continue to update this ROM with small fixes and things that are nice, but I consider this fully functional. I am going to work on smaller things that will enhance the ROM a bit. This isn't the last update!
About this ROM:
I decided to make this ROM after some other ROMs just weren't working out for me. Things were far too buggy, didn't seem to work very well, and it all seemed a little clunky. I decided that I would try to combine the best of the ROMs, not doing it the typical way (by just combining stuff I like), but by combining things to make it functional. This ROM is meant to be fast, stable and reliable. I will not add things that will load down the system or kill battery life.
I decided on the name (with help) because of the recent problems on XDA. The community was not united, and I thought the best way to unite everyone was to bring in a new ROM with a new vision and focus. This ROM has been incredibly successful in this way, thanks to those who started this ROM's thread out the right way. I believe we have a lot of good spirit here and we can continue with the attitude of helping one another and helping one another out, all personal interests aside.
I hope that you enjoy this ROM and find that it suits your needs.
Make sure you wipe if you are coming from a different ROM!!!

Check your thread. I got your Rom this morning and loved it except there were too many bugs. I don't mean any disrespect. I will probably switch to your ROM when you get it worked out.

ADB works fine as long as you have the latest HTC Drivers from the HTC Sync software install and you set your phone to HTC Sync mode.

You're the first to fix video recording! I wouldn't call that "did very little".

Why would people even make any 2.1 roms after flipz roms?
His Roms are like the best no one can competite with him

Does wifi work for anyone? I can't seem to get it to start on this rom. It errors saying: "Unable to start Wi-Fi"

I should mention that I have gotten Sprint TV to work on this, I'm not sure why other people are having problems. However, if you want Sprint TV, then you should simply copy the apk from your old ROM to the new one.
I will also update this to include apps2sd tomorrow. Also maybe get adb working. - I don't consider these to tools to be something that people use on a day-to-day basis which is why I call this fully-functioning. I also haven't fully tested everything, but as far as I can tell, everything works.
It is nice to have camera and video recording, though. All apps seem to show up in the Market. It does show Verizon stuff, and I need to make sure everything is on Sprint, but I will update it tomorrow to be a bit better. This is just a quick release. I will clean it up a bit, add some things to make it more functional and then release a better version.

I am a little confused as to what exactly this Rom contains, and what gap you are attempting to fill by posting it.

[ROM][32B] KiNgxKxKlair DroidEris2G1 WG kernel with ramhack (updated Mar 13 1pm GMT)

Disclaimers first:
1) The original ROM thread is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642643. Read it for details of what works, what doesn't. I've posted this in a new thread, because I didn't want to derail King's thread with an "unofficial" hack of his ROM, which might potentially generate support requests and people claiming there are problems that aren't down to his work.
2) I deserve no plaudits for this. All I did was rip the kernel (and, as it turned out, I also needed the wlan.ko) out of OpenEclair and shove it into King's ROM.
3) This also includes the fixes by xSunny and Vega over in the original thread (in fact it's based on Sunny's Nexus boot .zip file)
4) The WG kernel doesn't work with 2.1 3D. So I figured we might as well have the RAM hack and get our 10Mb back. SO DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO TRY TO RUN 3D APPS ON THIS - THEY WILL RUN LIKE A DOG. If you want Sense AND 3D, use King's original ROM.
5) As always with ROMs, I am not responsible for anything that might happen, e.g. your phone getting bricked, the world undergoing a total existence failure, etc. If you don't agree with that assertion don't flash this.
Right, that's over with. So what is this?
King's original ROM, especially with the tweaks made by Sunny and Vega is a beautiful bit of work. It's the first Sense ROM that's actually been usable on my phone. However, it has a BFS kernel and I absolutely *hate* BFS with a passion. I personally don't think it helps performance that much, and the way it makes the device miss half of your finger swipes so it's like having a resistive screen again. So I decided to see how the WG kernel worked out, being (IMO) the best kernel around at the moment.
I used the non-ram hack WG kernel from OpenEclair initially, and got good results, but on my Magic 32b (what you Yanks would call a MT3G ) the ramhack kernel is a frelling BEAST. This makes Sense feel as smooth as Dwang's Donut.
Enough yakking, give it a try, give some feedback. And most importantly, enjoy and have fun.
Requirements:
* FAT-EXT4-SWAP partitions on your SD. That's EXT4. Not EXT3 or EXT2. You'll get gapps FCs left, right and center if you ignore this little infonugget.
* A nice big SWAP. I've got 106Mb. But at least 96Mb.
Non-RAM hack version - this is a bit pointless now, as 3D doesn't work anyway so you might as well have the ramhack version, but just in case:

I'm going to try it using Fireat's modified A2SD and see how it works.

OK So I got it all installed and man does it fly, however all of the Google Apps are missing. I was hoping that Fireat's modified version of A2SD would allow this ROM to work. I'm almost motivated enough by the speed of this ROM to figure out how to fix it, just not yet.

Should have clarified. In my previous post I was trying to get it to work without an EXT partition.
I'm trying it now with an EXT partition to see how it goes. Loccy, did you include any of the patches from the original or is this based off of the 1.0?

I updated with kings last update to fix the wheatherbug, but I'm on kings kernel again when updating and it slows down this rom. So in this way it's not possible to fix the bug...damn. Anyone has another idea??

Hello.
Love the ROMs speed but it won't let me log into my google account. Under the account option it just reads "google_login". On startup I had an app force close. It was the Google Partner Login Service or something similar. I think I'd be right in guessing that's where my problem lies. I can't into either the market or my Gmail account. A bit of a problem.
Any ideas?
P.S. Just seen the error again. "Google Partner Setup" force closes. Any workarounds or anyone having the same issue?

Does this Sense have the pinch feature to select the various panels?

I just came from Kingklicks and it was nice so im excited for this one.

So far so good.
Camera/Camcorder doesn't work.
Full screen weather as has been mentioned.
Get more widgets doesn't seem to work under 'add htc widgets'
The ASTRO that is preinstalled is expired, need the updated one although you can update it yourself. Same goes for BACKup PRO
Also same problem as the old rom, cant delete sim sms and can't hide sim contacts in the contacts.
I think that about covers it.
I have no fc, everything seems to work pretty good and the ROM is pretty damn fast.
Great work, i agree this is way better then the BFS.
All around though good work from everyone.

Browsing Google for new roms to check out, review and breakdown for my own learning pleasure, I stumbled across this hero rom of Android 2.1 with SenseUI.

Tried to google search the archive name as well as the full 4shared link but couldn't find any articles about it anywhere. (If you know where its from let me know!)
Flashed it on my 32B Magic (MyTouch). This rom is INCREDIBLE. Booted up from flash to setup in less than 3 minutes, everything in setup ran smoothly and quickly (with one exception, I'll note below).
This is SO FAST, right off the bat, no SetCPU, no nothing, AND THE PHONE COMES UP INSTANTLY WHEN RECEIVING A CALL! No force closes so far, no non responding apps, NOTHING.
I've found 2 problems with the rom - Gmail setup can't seem to find a data connection (but the browser and IM clients do - weird? is this a CDMA rom? How do I check?) and the homescreen reboots anytime you hit the "Home" button - but it only takes a second or two to finish. I'm going to fly spare parts onto it and see if I can keep home in memory.
If anyone knows who's rom this is, let me know! Also, if it IS a CDMA rom, can someone port it to GSM? About Phone says this is the HTC Hero, but the Kernel says it is "Unavailable".
TRY THIS ROM, ITS AWESOME! If I can get gmail to work and the home app to stay in memory this will be my daily rom until CR brings his Slide rom out of beta and it runs this fast.

wifi - broken? says its unable to start
bluetooth - same as wifi
Gmail - broken? Can't get a data connection to gmail
Market - not working, because I can't get into gmail :-(
Browser - working, browsing the web as we speak
Keyboard - working (HTC_IME with no lag or weird ram-hack like problems.)
SetCPU (installed through adb) - installed and now this thing is just... I mean, there's no words for it. its fast. its really fast.

I'm working on building off of this rom - but I'm not copying and pasting in a ktichen, I'm actually working to rewrite code, replacing drivers, updating with a new kernel and above all else, making the apps work together. Right now I'm working to fix sync and make the prgram list actually display all the installed apps. This is tedious work, but Ill update you guys on my progress as it happens. I think this is a great rom to build off of because from the start, its super fast and as long as I keep speed in mind as I work on the rom, I think the end result will be a good one. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them, both for fixes and modifications to this rom. I'm new to android development so I'm doing a hell of a lot of reading right now but I'm a 8 year programmer and do it for 9 hours a day, 5 days a week, so it's not like programming is new to me - just the android side of it. I'd like to thank Cyanogen fo his wealth of tutorials, repositories, and tips because most of the stuff I'm reading and learning was written by him.

[5/9/10] On the google sync issue - I originally thought it was a Hero caching problem, having found a ton of information of this happening on stock hero devices, but it turns out it wasn't. In the process of discovering this, I've also found out why the installed apps don't show in the Rosie app list. Its a bug with how this rom was built in SDK version 6, when the original Hero rom from HTC was build in 7, it was backported (not sure if I have the correct terminology there), breaking a few things. I'm going to recompile in 7, fix the system date format (which is also causing an error in the Google sync) and hopefully get sync working, then I can start looking at other minor bugs and optimization.

PS - somebody find out where this rom came from so I can give proper credit to the original developer(s)!!!
Edit: I'm told this is Drizzy's original Hero 2.1 (Thanks Chris!) with broken drivers. I'm going to try to contact Eugene to see what modifications he made and also check through online documentation to figure driver **** out. Props to Drizzy/Eugene - this build may be more or less broken (well, it was your first and you had plenty of updates to it since then) but damn, nice job on such a fast rom, its awesome even for alpha.

im a little scared to try it...so i wont zackattacks 2.1 1.1 hero is fast enough and stable enough for me right now.

Could you give us more information from where did you obtain it?

Yeah, I found reviews from this gamercore guy, but he doesn't say where he got it or who made it. He does rom reviews. You can find a bunch of his rom reviews on youtube - I doubt he makes them all, but I could be wrong.

He just review roms.. By the way this was uploaded last year must be 1.5 hero not 2.1 Old news

You're wrong. It was updated TODAY - and its 2.1 - I'm in it right now - firmware - 2.1

Could be - but I don't think so, this thing is old, uploaded last year, I can't get ZX's 2.1 hero to work and I haven't seen a ZX Team update on their 2.1 Sense threads on here or on androidspin, plus this one has a ton of extra features, like the animated browser progress bar from the original espresso rom.

seems interesting. can anyone confirm if this is 2.1 as OP suggusted or 1.5 as mediaman suggusted?

try messing with camera settings in camera app, i turned down the resolution from 5 mp to 2.5 and picture taking worked quicker and looked better in my opinion

when you flash this, remember i did not sign it, so if your using clockworkmod recovery toggle signature verification
i recommend you go let this boot all the way, then reboot. then after that, go into settings-developer options, and click the tick box next to:
background process limit/ at most 4 processes
show all ANRs
and make sure animations are off
i turn off all vibration, except for notifications, that includes the keyboard as haptic feedback slows things down.
then use script manager to run zeppelinrox's v6 supercharger to bulletproof launcher

is that where it asks you if you are a certain user and to click yes or no to confirm? i have no clue what bearing that has on the backup app, i'd say just disregard it.

so here it goes guys. im out of the game for now. expect no new updates on the ics roms i have ported before. jb is the future, and shelnutt is the guy to get us into the future. ics roms never quite ran great anyway, so no big loss. i may pop back up in the future and throw down on some jb paranoidandroid, aokp, miui, or anything of the such, but i cannot guaruntee a thing. its been nice, but support for these roms stops here. (unless of course, anyone else would like to take these over for me, or i can get the guys from gsm hero using my allinone installer full time, then heroc will have everything they get)
if anyone would like to take over, please message me. ill be more than willing to send everything your way, since im way too busy with life in general right now.

im not fully gone, just havnt had time (and wont have a whole lot of time for the forseeable future) to maintain anything. jordfaz, 1ceb0x and kemoba over at the gsm hero forums are doing excellent work, and im going to try to get them setup with allinone installer (jordfaz is already fluent in it, hes doing great) so that the work they do for one device can trickle to us too. they seem to be getting way more done than i can so look for those in the future.
the only thing i may possibly maintain (if i can get my scripts working right, still poking at them here and there when i have time) is allinonecm10 nighly releases. they will be stripped, with no need for firerats. shelnutt is doing a great job, and any kind of burden we can take off of his shoulders about supporting the jb work he does would certainly help him acheive more.
thats not to say there wont be jb ports of miui, aokp, and paranoidandroid. those will most definitely come, and when the time is right i will personally (as long as my old heroc is still kicking lol) make sure you guys get those in hand to play with.

I've tried porting v1.6a to the hero GSM (the last paranoid android for ics), but it doesn't boot fully. When I get it booting, I will be sure to use the allinone installer made by whoshotjr2006 so that the heroc and the Eris can use it
If I can't get it to boot, wait for whoshotjr2006, he's better at porting than me.
