Mozilla Org released minimo which will be the best browser ever
Tabbed Browsing
Works on Internet Banking site etc etc
Goodbye Opera and PIE

somebody found America?
It's still *very* early stages. OK, so it renders better than anything else, but the rest of the interface is nasty. It's also hideously slow to respond on both 400Mhz XDA2 and 600Mhz iPaq. And the keyboard doesn't work in landscape mode. TBH a custom soft keyboard would be better.
Wait til 0.7 before you expect any sort of useable version (Current version is 0.013!)
There is a little-known browser called Thunderhawk which renders brilliantly to a 320x240 screen in landscape by scaling everything down. But it's a bit sluggish, and they seem to pass *all* traffic through their own server to perform preprocessing (and thus you need to pay a subscription.) I think Minimo has the potential to blow all of them out of the water if it can be faster than Opera and as impressive in its output as Thunderhawk.
Wait, WM5 only?
*tries it on his 2003SE device anyway*
If you're looking for a tabbed browser try ftxPBrowser. Same engine as PIE, so compatible with most sites. Also it uses the same favorites, cookies & cache. History seems not to be working though. & it's only 75K:!:
Regards, M
Many people don't like the IE rendering engine, or the IE way of rendering (e.g. Opera) which is why they seek alternatives.
Further, the reason it's "only 75k" is because it's not a browser. Whoever wrote it - and PIE - didn't actually write a browser themselves, they just instructed IE to render the page into the area they specified. The tabs just switch between visible IE areas. In short, if you uninstall IE then it won't work. It's like taking a Fiat Cinqecento and putting a Peugeot 407 body on it, then saying it's a whole new car which is very light but looks just as good as something else. If you take the Fiat out, it doesn't go any more.
(Coders out there - I know this is technically very loose, but I'm trying to put this simply for someone who doesn't understand the relevance of MiniMo)
Excuse me for being so dumb... I know what Minimo is about, tried it & opera (mini too) & thunderhawk as well.
Problem is though that PIE is still the most compatible:!:
I use firefox on my PC & probably will be using minimo when it's working properly. But at the moment minimo is almost useless from the user point of view.
Yes you got me P on this.
Minimo is also currently around 10Mb.... bit large methinks. (and bloody slow)
My take on this
Minimo is slow
Opera is fiddly and the download thing is a HUGE prob plus takes up too much space
PIE seems to work fine.
What exactly is up with PIE ? I mean on a desktop Mozilla rules but on a handheld ???
Huge problem with PIE for many people is that it's a M$ product. Personal I don't mind.
Serious problem is that it doesn't render, one column does help a little & there's the lack of tabs. For this last I use ftxPBrowser. Problem with that one is the lack of history & most important downloads are very problematic if not impossible.
Which make me use ftxPBrowser & Opera mini (no https :-( ) for browsing & PIE for downloads.
Now it's waiting for a good rendering, downloading & secured browser.
Cheers, M
Strange thing I know about people disloking MS progs, I know people do not like them, the thing is why are they using devices with MS op system on them when they could be using a Symbian unit.
It's a real problem, huh?
Palm and symbian have some really nice software to run on their devices, I'm especially a fan of the UIQ stuff that SE slaps on top of Symbian. The don't, however, seem to have quite got the knack of cobbling together really good hardware to run it all on.
Of course, the kids who make the really cool hardware seem content to slap Windows Mobile on there and be done with it.
So, in conclusion: come on HTC, go source a proper OS for your handhelds. Maybe have a word with Apple?
Back on-topic: it seems to run on WM2003SE, but not very nicely. It's all juddery and incomplete and frankly kind of rubbish. More evidence, if it was ever needed, that Magician-type devices are not meant for web browsing.
i use one of the beta versions on 2003
it's ok but slow
and it DONT SUPPORT COPY PASTE!!!
which is a biatch
ATEOTD no Firefox/Mozilla is worth using at such early test versions. It's worth keeping an eye on if you're that geeky - but Firefox (back when it was Phoenix then Firebird) wasn't really useable until version 0.7. Consider that minimo is at 0.07 or something - it has a long way to go before it's competing with IE/Opera. I won't put PIE in that list, because it's just not a browser. And Thunderhawk is simply incomparible in its function. I would like to see a browser which renders as well as Thunderhawk but more quickly and without needing to interface with a central server, though.
Minimo's greatest feature so far is that it does actually support JavaScript and AJAX systems like Google Maps, which no other browser can do. But to get the speed out of Thunderhawk, you would probably need to render to a static image. And that negates animated GIFs and any JavaScript that manipulates on-screen elements.
For years now I’ve been standing firm by the pocket pc platform. In countless ways I think it is the way of the future for not only one’s phone, but the one device that we all carry around that does it all. I’m very pleased to say the platform has proven this time and time again. But there’s one grey area that just seems to be left in limbo with the improvements of everything else. This is IM! Back when I upgraded to my Cingular 8125 from my ipaq, I remember having the feeling something was missing. I had this new phone that could do it all, but it just wasn’t able to do it all correct, so I sought out on a search to find that perfect im app.
This was back in the days when agile was still in beta and was free. Aside from the ugly aim app that I had to download from the .uk site, this was pretty much the only option. But it was okay, it was a very good option. As time passed a few more came out, IM+ was around as well and a few other lack luster apps. I do remember paying for IM+ but wasn’t very happy with the UI and the way it worked with the soft keys so I kinda stuck to agile.
Then I got a whole of my 8525 when I came out. So I had this phone that could do it all (lol again) now with 3g included….and I still didn’t have an IM app to my liking. Agile and IM+ really started to look bad. Not to mention these were the days of the sidekicks! As much as I hate those things, one has to admit, they do what they’re supposed to do very well. The thing that really wowed me about the sidekick was its ability to switch to sms messenger for the aim when you’re on the phone. This was pure genius. It allowed you to stay connected while on the phone or not. Well….luckily we had a solution for that. It was called verichat.
Verichat had an option to enter your sms address and it would send you the messages via text if you were to be disconnected from the internet. This was all well and good, even though it worked…it was very slow. Not to mention the UI of the app itself was kinda slow as well…so I often got frustrated. So it’s about a year later and we have a few new comers. Among them are mundu, octrotalk and the latest and greatest palringo.
Once again I find myself paying for apps I’m not entirely happy with (no ones fault but myself.) But the life time membership for mundu wasn’t bad…it was only $11. Mundu has a very clean and welcome UI. Its features are definitely up to snuff, but it’s still missing what I think should be the basics. But overall this is a very good app. Octrotalk is still in beta….and by its rights a very good app. Even though I think the UI could use some polish and it’s still missing the “basics.” Now for my favorite of the bunch….palringo. This one is a almost a entire entity on its own, that just supports IM clients. The UI isn’t as pretty as mundu, but it’s still polished and the feature set is great….especially its support for push to talk and image I’m. But again….the basic.
What are these basics I keep rambling on about? Well…for one…lets start with displaying your contacts buddy icons. It kills me that none of these apps allow me to see my contacts buddy icons…and what’s even more annoying, I can’t set a custom pic for my icon in any app. This is such a huge feature and it needs these developers urgent attention. 2. I’d like to see support for fonts and colors. I should be able to import my favorite font to the phone and set size and color to be displayed to my contact when I’m in a conversation. Mundu touched on this a little but not enough. 3. Being able to read contacts away messages. Mundu and octrotalk does this but palringo does not….this should be a no brainier. 4. Just make it simple to navigate….there should be no reason I should have to take out the stylus. I should be able to scroll my list, start convos, switch between them, set custom away messages send images, so on and so forth with the soft keys.
Im not a developer, but I do know these few improvements shouldn’t be hard to accomplish. These are all standard on all desktop IM programs, other mobile platforms (like the sidekick and the iphone) and even web2 based sites (like meboo.com) And even if they’re difficult to develop….so what! Developers need to stop being lazy and get it done. I don’t care of if I have to pay $50 for the app. What really kills me inside is how the iphone came out, and within a few weeks it had 7 different I’m clients most of which had the basics down pat. Why does it take us 4 years in the ppc community? And we’re still not there yet. Anyone else feel this way? Is anyone out there listening???????
You need to re-format your post because it is not easy to read
What is your problem? Describe in 1 or 2 sentences ...
The new MSN Messenger mobile is amazing.
1. Intuitive and Easy navigation: Right/Left tabs between the conversations. Up/Down navigates buddies and messages.
2. Emoticons
3. Supports sending images.
4. (Amazingly useful) Supports sending Voice Clips. This is probably one of the most wow features about it.
5. Displays information about contacts, including the IM picture.

My current thoughts exactly. I'm crying inside.
I really hope that people at Palringo will get it "done" and not leave behind a client that will miss the important features. It's really amazing that some companies even charge for their poor inexcusable clients.
I also agree that those avatar images are more important than many would think. Last time i chatted with my ppc, i had three "Timo" persons online. Had to ask which one which was. I've gotten used to just look at the avatar.
I feel the same way! I LOVE having IM on my phone.. but it just seems like no single company can get it right on the PocketPC. I don't understand what the is the problem! My favorite two right now are Octrotalk and Mundu. I tried Palringo, but it lacked a couple critical things for me.
Octrotalk Pros
1. Today plugin that shows status
2. Doesn't crash... ever.. it stays connected for days
3. Fairly simple to change custom status text
Octrotalk Cons
1. No custom status text on the today plugin.. ARGH, so simple, I've requested it three times!
2. No profile pictures, come on... just add them!
3. Having Gtalk be the conduit for the other legacy IM clients still causes problems with my other IM clients like Trillian... I get duplicate contacts often
Mundu Pros
1. Supports profile pictures! Yippee
2. Displays custom status messages next to names on the contact list
3. Supports group conversations across IM mediums! woot!
Mundu Cons
1. No today plugin... I really like that feature in Octrotalk... just make a simple one line plugin that says status and custom message, ie. "Online - Mobile!"
2. No WM5 soft key support, I HATE tapping the screen.. even more so when the interface has a TINY menu bar.
3. Doesn't display the current custom status message for YOURSELF anywhere that I can find.
Also don't forget to read the IM Bible at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=295677 - it might contain info you aren't aware of.

i'll tell ya what....that disconnecting thing annoyed the hell outtah me. Im gonna try to check off the "always on" connection option in HTCustom and see what happens. I think thats the same reg hack.
But i've been through your post a few times...maybe one too many times.
<< Plug Alert >> (I am not affiliated with Spb in any way.) (But if they give me free products, I wouldn't mind. )
I didn't see a thread about this announcement, so I thought I mention that Spb Software House has a new version of Pocket Plus. It is smaller, faster and has some really cool new features. I personally like the IE7-like tabs in PIE and the 'touch-like scrolling of Contacts and PIE. (Interestingly, if you use Spb Contacts, I can't seem to get it to scroll.)
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/?en
I have been a big fan of Spb. I know now that I've been on the XDA forum for a while that some of the features of the Spb products are available for free, but I think they do a great job of putting it all together.
I loaded this yesterday and I've been busy with work, so it is a little early to review. Has anyone else looked that this. Post your comments here.
I love the new "Smart Scrolling" feature... You can scroll your contacts and web sites like on TouchFLO.. Great stuff..
I have been using SPB Plus for the past two years. Downloaded this new version and in just one hour I was convinced to purchase the licence key.
I am specially impressed by the reduction in memory usage over the previous version and also the large tabs fit for finger operation and finally the way it handles third party today screen plug-ins.
Tried the trial version:
good point - doesn't take too much memory to run.
Bad point - occupies 2.9 meg of device memory.
good point - runs other plugins within tabs.
bad point - no need for Ilauncher anymore.
good point - tabs in IE.
bad point - smart scrolling doesn't work very well ( I do have touchflo rom so maybe this is interfering with it).
bad point - only lets you put 6 tabs on today screen.
good point - you could run Ilauncher in a tab and have more tabs to launch things.
good point - skinable.
overall I like it, i'm going to run the trial version for as long as possible but on first impression I may switch to this it is fast and flexible enough and integrates well with other programs.
I would recommend you try it. (I;m not affiliated in any way either).
Im sick of the most useful apps being developed for the iPhone only.
Take this app for example
http://www.mobiletechaddicts.com/2008/11/16/tv-plus-sky-remote-for-iphone-updated/
This app would be SO useful to UK WM users. The ability to remote record programs on your Sky+ or Sky+HD box would be extremely useful, yet we are being left out in the cold yet again.
This is seriously the last straw, im almost ready to jump ship next gen of phones.
Does anyone know of a WM equivilant?

As you might have seen on the "application" you linked in your post: it is again not a real application but a web service packed in an executable file for iPhones - something the world really does not need since service providers such as TiVo are launching their own stuff:

you guys dont get it, this isnt a remote control app nor should I be required to buy a slingbox (expensive). The iphone app is simple, you sign in with your sky account username and password, you pull up a complete TV guide and you set recordings from the app. The app communicates with skys servers which then in turn send a signal to your sky box from wherever you are in the world and your box will record that programme.
Now, granted you can do this from the sky.com website, but typically its one of those sites that just doesnt work in Opera or pocket IE.
Tivo Mobile
Tivo Mobile was released last month but don't know if that helps you.
no hes lives in uk. sky+ is like a uk tivo.
theres an app for iphone that lets you sign into you sky account and record a show from you phone
he want an app that lets him sign into his sky+ account with his mobile

Well, I got you already in first place! Even the iPhone Application is nothing but a modified webbrowser control, so, basically, you're loading the Sky+ website into your iPhone - and this is why I always wonder then people talk about 'aplication on the iPhone', mostly these are nothing but web services!
Sky+ is promissing and promoting the MOBILE REMOTE RECORDING on their website and I can't believe that OPERA can't view the site properly! You might wanna contact their technical support in order to get it solved!
Actually mate, it is possible to get one of the java apps for the sony phone to work aparently. Though I havent tried it on the diamond, but i did get it working on my wizard.
So, just download one of the sony ericson java remote record apps and install and try. Have a bit of a google.
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=680256
You got 2 options to try here,
either just browse to the tv guide page on the sky page as normal, at the top it will give you the option for screen reader version. works a treat, bookmark it to save browsing the horrific sky homepage
you can always 1 up your iPhone freinds, grab skyfire browser, full web browsing including flash. just tried will check if it worked when I get home. Downside is skyfire needs good connection i.e wifi or 3g to work well.
either way less clutter on you phone, rather than the mess of utils you get on iPhone.
hope that helps.
That app has been around for time mate it was a java app and i had it on my symbian phone i think you can get it here they cover all versions

It seems like owners of WM have to scour the entire globe to find software for their phones. While iPhone owners simply go to the app store and download them all in one place.

You forget 1 thing:
If you have only 1 single place then this single place will most likely make the decision for you which applications will be available to you and which not - this is (unfortunately) quite common in the Apple Store! I am quite happy that I can different stuff on different places! Often you get your stuff directly from the developer's website where you then find as well support and forums for the particular product.
Now, think about the following: each super market in the world would be Wal-Mart ... go a step further and try to determine what you might find in Wal-Mart if no other stores are around anymore ... go the final step and try to get support from an Wal-Mart employee for the product you bought ... brrrrr!
That java app (which I used to use on an old sony ericsson) does not and will not work on a touch HD with its lack of buttons
Good news http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/tvguide/tvlistingsalternate works in opera.
Bad news - there is no way to login to your account. opera/sky site simply doesnt remember your credentials :-(
why don't you wait for a dev phone like compulab exeda
Hi folks
At the moment to me Notes Mobile does the job but only just.
I can tell you that Notesmobile is being developed. I am in possession of Beta 1.1.9 at the moment.
Please don't ask for a copy of it as it is one of the conditions of me having it.
It's a pretty raw beta , so no pen thickness or colour changing or anything.
Major things that I've noted:
1. There is finally a PEN ONLY palm rejection setting that works a treat.
2. The OCR both automatic and freehand conversion seems to be more accurate and quicker
3. You can import a picture , move it and resize it
4. New lasoo system that works a bit better and a few interface tweaks.
5. On the first page you can set up views, so you can further catagorise your notebooks ( So a Personal view with multiple notebooks, a Work related view with multiple notebooks ).
Things it doesn't fix address that I know are on some peoples wishlists:
1. More export options ( still only text and img )
2. Landscape mode
Don't forget though it is a Beta !!
So a heads up that it is being developed and it is certainly a step ahead of the original release.
They expect to release at CES Las Vegas in January, so it shouldn't be far from coming to us though whether it will be a free or paid upgrade I'm not sure but I've asked my contact though it might not be his area within the business.
Thanks a lot. Is there any way for custom backgrounds, or is that not present yet? Also, when you say release in January, they're going to present the new software of Notesmobile at CES? Never really seen new software at CES but yeah, that still sounds awesome. But yeah, I have to ask, are you involved somewhat with the development or do you just have contacts with one of the persons that's working there?
As I say it's a very raw beta.
1. No custom background, only blank, lined, graph and yellow lined a per the previous version.
2. Yes they intend to launch @ CES January 10th 2012 Las Vegas
3. Nope not involved with the Vision Objects at all. I contacted the guys a while ago around Myscript Stylus and as a consequence got chatting with them. They offered me the beta to get my feedback
Nice to hear that it's still being developed. The whole lack of cummunication felt like they've abandoned this app which really has a lot of potential but is right now quite useless for me.
Let's hope they'll add some more export options until January and also a possibility to back everything up.
This application has the raw goods and with a few [meaningful] tweaks and additional features I could become a daily user...
Thanks for the information on the update. I emailed them about wanting a pen-only mode and they simply responded with a cryptic "thanks for your interest we are constantly working to improve our software" reply that contained no valuable information. I am so glad to hear that they are in fact working on it and have implemented a pen-only mode. Hopefully MyScript Stylus will also get pen-only mode in a future update.
With CES just around the corner, I'll be see what the update is on the update .....
I'll let you all know
Any update to this?
TS
yeah
It was on the market
you couldn't download it
it was taken down
It is now on the market again
you still can't download it
it has not been taken down
sign in and check My Apps...Updates Available. you should be able to down load it from there. If not, you will need to install the new lenovo market then check My Apps...Updates Available. Its posted on the lenovo forum
Got it and the difference is like night and day.! Awesome!

Quill is still better tho. still overly complicated writing notes in it.
It doesn't have OCR, but I've been hunting for a few days, and I'm most impressed with FreeNote. It doesn't seem to pick up on my hand on the screen, ever. It uses tags, classifications/categories for organization. It's definitely not a candied Apple app, so it takes some getting used to (it's intuitive enough but not artificially prettied, nothing hides its complexity, tongue is misspelled, and classifications=categories, more or less). It does some truly amazing stuff. I expect it to sell (out) in about March or April, but I'm just some schmuck user, so....
I'm happy to see that Phatware is in the Android game now. I used WritePad on WinMo3-6, but it looks by the reviews like they're having a terrible time. They'll weather it and raise the bar, I'm sure, and when I'm fed up with XT9, I'll likely buy WritePad if it gets even a few good reviews. They deserve a few snacks for PhatPad. I *still* use it on my HTC Advantage sometimes (animated gifs I draw, easy export, and the 5" screen is perfect for quick notes & doodling).
The XT9 handwriting input is pretty amazing (my handwriting sucks, really). I can't figure out why the Notes Mobile App is so bad at recognizing my same awful handwriting. Very eager to see what happens. The inline OCR is what I've been watching for for, like, 10 years.
There is a note app that I have been using called Lecture Notes... works a lot better than Notes mobile. Developed directly on the Lenovo Thinkpad tablet. It is still really new but he updates the thing about three times a week it seems like.
when using it you can disable the touch interface all together so the palm isn't an issue. There is a trial version on the market.
Still the best app for me
For business I'm using a Lenovo Windows 'tablet' with MS Notes. Honestly, that spoilled me. Comming now to Android seems to step back years in history and development. Never the less, I arranged myself with Notes Mobile and Evernotes. The only big issue I have with notes mobile is the unavailable option to export whole notebooks as pdf or pictures.
Why I think Notes mobile is the best compromise:
- The Lasso (u write something and u realise u need more space, the lasso helps! All the other programs require the eraser and to do all the work again...)
- handwriting recognition, that can be easily combined with sketches and quick note...
Only issue
- pdf export
A work around for no PDF export
I installed Cloud Print on my Android device
I installed EStrongs File Explorer (or you could use the native Dropbox client or Dropsync) on my Android device
I set up a Dropbox account with installation on my PC
I installed Bullzip on my Windows PC
I set Bullzip to automatically save "prints" to a Dropbox folder
Anything you can share via Cloud Print (most things) you can print to a PDF.
It's a traffic-heavy way to do it, so it's ungreen, and could be pricey if you're using a paid & limited data plan.
(I discovered this while testing. If anyone can help me get my Epson RX595 to work with Cloud Print app for Android, obviously Bullzip is fine, as are test pages via Cloud Print from Chrome on my pc, I'd be ever so grateful for a PM).
Could someone do me a huge favor and upload the latest version of the Notes Mobile app? I can't install the latest version of your app store to download it and it doesn't show up in the old version. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Feeling a little silly right now, but how do I get the updated version of Notesmobile?
V1.0.0 came with my TPT.
I created an account in Lenovo app shop, but didn't see anything in the "My apps" section. Tried searching for it in the app shop, but it's not showing up either.
Thanks in advance
