Before I get android.. - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi guys, i've never used android os before. My question is, does android ever lag like crappy win mobile? and how's the sms function in android??
thanks

The x10 is my first android, it runs very smoothly. Mybe because its 1ghz CPU.
It blows away my iPhone away in terms of responsiveness. The iPhone is very laggy compared to my android.

And what do you want to know about SMSes? I got free Handcent SMS application installed: when I get SMS, dialog is shown with its contents, I could click on text field and quick-write some answer, I'm also just one click to IM-like history, 2 clicks to delete the message, 2 clicks to call sender, few clicks to e.g. send him and email, etc. It's perfect for me. Of course you could install other application or even write your own ;-)

Oh i just wanna know if the sms function lags at all?
like when it loads the history of the convo it counts from 1 to whatever how many msges u have. Cuz in winmobile it does that and it pisses pp off big time.

Seems like whatsapp is serious into getting onto our phones

Those in the whatsapp beta for Android should update your software ASAP, because they just put in push functionality for everyone with a 2.2 phone. Is this the only software so far not from google to actually use the 2.2 push function? (C2DM and the likes do not count)

It doesn't poll like the old version anymore, and after some testing, I am getting my messages a little faster, because there is usually a 10-20 second delay when the app is sleeping, but this time it's like a 2-3 second after my friend sends me the text via whatsapp.
ahh right so there would be better battery life too??
Is the beta app available? Have they mentioned a release date?
Thanks

Whatsapp is probably one of the most useful apps for someone coming from a blackberry and misses BBMs. The difference is the speed but the main upside is that it's crossplatformed. Also the app is good for people that travel and have an open wifi spot. Free messaging to friends back home is well worth it.

Nope, but it should be within the next few months, it's already very stable other than some of the extra stuff like backgrounds, etc.

Yeah, since I have quite a few friends with an iphone and BB, I'm able to send them messages via my data plan.
AppBrain's Fastweb Installer uses C2DM too for installation of applications from your PC browser.
Anything that uses C2DM is immediately interesting, I'll check it out!

It's not using the same type of 2.2 push unfortunately.
hows it different?
EDIT: also seems like there are sometimes big delays between messages. whatsapp keeps disconnecting in the new version
I had to revert back to an older verison I believe. Newest version yesterday kept logging me off also and messages were stalled until I sent one out then they'd all come in.
Looked on the changelog and they took off the "Push Notifications"
Currently running: v1.0.6138
I'm using whatsapp on 2.1. working pretty well so far. ... thinking of getting 2.2 but no sense UI ROM for hero yet.
can we have a link to the apps apk?
Aww man, they removed push notifications via C2DM and the reason was they need to give google a quota? I have no idea what that means.
http://beta.whatsapp.com/test/7/WhatsApp.html
* google push disabled -- we need quota from google
really, what's the difference/advantage of using C2DM. i dont understand what's going on in the background.
Yepp.... just downloaded the APK from the link provided above... You can download and install it, but when it asks for your display name, you will get a message that says "Unauthorized beta user, DO NOT E-MAIL US", or something like that.
That's too bad because I loved it on my BB to chat with my iPhone friends, you would think that it would be easier and faster to create an app for Android and it would already be out in the market !!
it works!! everyone gets that message just wait till tommorrow and try again and it will work. Heaps of people have had success using this method. dont give up so easily
updated yesterday and they've been approved for the push notification via GOOGLE's c2dm.
Only thing i've noticed is that the app unlike iPhone's version doesn't time out while it's in the background. So it seems like you're always logged in. This could be corrected by a task manager app to kill the app but once you receive a new message it auto logs you on and double check marks the message as read.

Any application that can read SMS' out loud (possibly through a bluetooth device?)??

I wanted an application that could do this but all I could find was the one from blueAnt which only works with their specific bluetooth device...
You could use Tasker and use this profile - price looks high but it's VERY powerful once you know what you're doing.
Comes with a trial mode for around seven days.
+1 for Tasker. Brilliant app.
I have my 'in car' profile set to read texts - on text receipt it pauses the music player, then reads the senders contact name, and then the body of the text. Awesome.
i was planning on getting the blueant Q1 (just found it for $25). are you saying it won't work with handcent in reading a txt message?
edit: forget it...answered my own question by going to their site. "Hear text messages read aloud on your Q1 when connected to an Android device with our Android application."
What about the vlingo application. It has an email and sms reader that reads the message out loud when activated, but I haven't managed to get it to read the message through the Bluetooth headset

SMS Speak
Just stumbled across this thread looking for something else. But thought I'd chime in. I use SMS Speak (the paid one, not the free one - two different companies/products), and it works great. I can get incoming texts and reply, all orally. I'm curious about the other products mentioned, though...

Unacceptable losses of SMS

Wondering whether I am the only one with this issue
I SMS a lot and like keeping the SMS on my device. I had recently an extremely unpleasant surprise: my total list of conversations was back to... ONE conversation with my last SMS and... That's it!!! Thousands of SMS gone
I happen to save everything with mIQ and hopefully it's not lost. However I had the experience already twice in the past 2 weeks so I am wondering:
Is this a feature from Android? Big SMS file --> autoarchive? If then how do I disable it or how do I recover my SMS?
Is it a bug? In which case this is extremely severe and not serious for such an expensive device or for an OS that is expected to be a safe one
Is it from Samsung implementation? Or Android itself?
Please share your experience, I'd like to know if I am the only one and if there is any solution (My "old" Touch Pro 2 with WM 6.5 never lost a single SMS although having more than 30,000 SMS in the box)

Ive never let my SMS get to more than 500, mainly because I don't like scrolling through congressional. Never had this issue though.

you really shouldnt keep that many sms around anyhow with android, its likely to cause some issues but did you check the settings on the sms app? mine has settings to delete threads after a certain number and is set to 200 by default.
I use a program called Backup to Gmail. Works excellent.
It let's me delete sms'es on the phone while my Gmail account keeps them all even if I delete them on the phone.
It can also restore sms'es.MMS restore is not supported yet but backup works good.

Yes of course... Besides If I had it set at 200 I would expect to keep at leats 200, not 1
I shouldn't let many with Android ? So with WM6.5 it's ok to have 20,000 SMS but Android cannot handle them ? Hum... Somethng is seriously wrong

Thanks, I know a few of these. Without being able to restore --> kind of useless for me... Actually as far as I remember some CAN restore
I am already using mIQ that works ok (though a bit slow to handle too many SMS)
why would you even want that many, its not like you are going to read through 20k sms
It's funny like the answers are more about having less SMS or why wanting that many rather than why the SMS client or the OS Re broken...
Hey man why do u need a car, just take your bicycle!
I have more than a thousand conta ts I converse regularly with. Then add a certain number of sms per conversation and u get there
Anyway I do not even have that many on my Tab... Far less than on my previous device. And this disappointing device/os/client combination cannot even manage them... What do you expe t me to do or say? Go back to my TP2? Honestly this is ridiculous
meanwhile I'd like to know if I am the only one and if someone knows some fises (other than delet my SMS or but an iPad...)

give handcent a try and use their backup service, ive never had a problem with the stock sms app, currently theres around 300txts for 20 contacts, and 50 or so for the rest.
No problem here as I don't keep a lots of sms. But had a problem with new sms going into the wrong contact profile. So, have to be extra careful not to reply to the wrong person.
Anyone faces the same problem?

Deleting would help more than the purchase of an iPad, as that uses the 3g chip to get a data connection, while both the texting and voice service are ignored.
That said... I never got this issue, but my brother has a relatively similar one: long messages tend to be split, mixed and (why not, since we are at it) partly deleted. That is on Eclair using an Xperia X10 mini pro.
Never had this kind of issue when i was at my peak of sms usage: store on the MMC, and there you go, thousands of sms on a puny Nokia 3650.

Does Mango fix the basics ??

Will Mango fix the basic functions that were missing when released?
None of the recent reviews seem to address this..
1. Can you listen to movie audio via bluetooth headset ?
2. Can you prevent sms notifications appearing - especially on the lock screen ?
3. Is there now a detailed CALL History ?
4. Can you delete history of recent people, photos, music etc ?
5. Can you forward emails and text messages ?
6. Any sign of SMART Dialing ?
7. Can you SMS to a contacts 2nd mobile number ?
I am sure there are other small things I cant think of...

You have already been able to do this with emails & text messages/mms.
Not sure on the rest, I haven't been specifically looking for those though with the exception of smart dialing, which I do not think is in Mango.

@colossus_r what is your POINT !!!!!!!!!!
I`ve had a Samsung Omnia since October and carry it everyday along with my Blackberry for work.... but I dont have time to f%%k about trying to work out things that are not obvious!!! My phone is pre-nodo btw if that makes a difference..
About Question 5
Now I am looking at a text message on the phone I press the three dots (...) and the options are send (which just does a reply) and attach. Exactly how do I forward to a different person as it does not seem clear...
About Question 7
Also how would I know that to sms to a 2nd number in contacts I would have to create a 2nd contact for the same person and then link them!!!
Questions were aimed at people who have used the Early Mango Build
Thanks to those who have answered so far

If you youtube the windows phone mago review you will see some of the features in action which could help some of the questions you havent asked.
Press and hold on a msg, you will see the option for forward. Its pretty easy to find out. That's why the other guy was questioning if you have used a wp7 phone on a daily base. Yeah, you do need to calm down a bit. If those features were important to you, a quick search would have solved your problem.

In my opinion, NoDo fixed the basics. WP7 was horrid before NoDo. Mango is supposed to go beyond the basics with added features bringing WP7 up to the level of other smartphones.
what about contact search in mango? anybody has info on whether we can search by company or still by name only?
Not sure, but there are groups anyway, so you could set up business groups.
To the original poster...
1. Dont know, hope so.
2. Dont know again, doesnt really bother me, though, just swipe to the right and it disapears.
3. Yes
4. Dont know, wouldnt use it, so havent looked.
5. Both availble since launch, just hold on the text and click foward (three dots wont work, because how the hell is the phone supposed to know which text you want to foward.) Email just press the lower left icon and it says Reply or Forward, choose forward... Incredibly simple.
6. Dont know, hope so.
7. If there is a second number in your contact you can just do it from the people hub anyway.
Company search for Exchange 2007/2010 always worked always worked I think ...but Exchange 2003 company search (GAL) was enabled in NODO
Thanks to all for answers and appologies if I have offended anyone I am a bit peeved with Microsoft, Orange and Samsung and this non update on my Omnia 7 issue......
Anyway
Email - I just realised that I actually did know previously that you could forward email but forgot as I have been mainly using Company Blackberry for email for a few months now...
SMS - I agree I didnt think it through properly and didnt think about the conversation mode would mean requiring a long press... looked a few times and tried short presses but just assumed it was a missing feature.
Thanks again feeling a bit think now
There is no smart dialing in the beta I'm using

[Q] Iphone group text possible?

Does anyone know if its possible for us android users to respond "to all" when iphone users send us a group text? Or even see who's involved in the group text? I've searched and searched and don't think there is a way so I figured Id ask here in case someone knew of a way.

Whatsapp.. That should work. Dunno. Don't use official texting. Whatsapp should work though.
And tell them to get Android. Make fun of them. Show the beautiful widgets. Then tell them to show you a beautiful weather animation on their homescreen. In they pull down the Android rip off pull down tell them it's weak, full screen. It should be easy, you know. On your little dinky screen.

Trust me. I've done literally everything you just listed. I've been an Apple user since the first gen Iphone up until the Iphone 4. Whatapp does work but the Apple user has to download it as well. I'm trying to see if I can connect with their native group text. I guess that's impossible at this point since we cant cross platforms yet. Similar to BBM on blackberries. If there is anyone with any ideas, please share.
Currently we are using Voxer which is pretty neat. However, the iphone user still needs to download it.

I'm currently trying NinjaSMS. Hangouts didn't work for my phone. I couldn't send or receive MMS which appears to be a known problem with a few phones. In addition, the 8sms app which was suggest to me also didn't work. It broke up their iphone group text to an indiviual text from each person. Therefore I still had to reply individually to everyone in the group. I'll let you know if NinjaSMS works for me.
