Request: Mod to have 4 column HTC Album view - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Themes and Apps

Not sure which forum to request this in but I think the thumbnails in HTC's Album are too large at 3 columns wide. 4 colums would be better as you can see more pics per screen and thus require less scrolling.
Anyone up for the challenge?

Sorry no solution but I think it's a great idea!

it's pretty easy to do
you just need to edit the two xml files in /windows.
ha_skin_l.xml and ha_skin_p.xml for landscape and portrait respectively

Pretty easy fards? Have you looked in the xml files?

Wallpaper size... something weird going on here?

Hi guys,
So I was hunting around to figure out what the wallpaper size is for the Nexus One... most people seem to state it is 960x800, or 2 times wider than the standard 480 resolution.
I did a test to see how it would look on the device by creating a 960x800 image with red vertical lines every 192 pixels (which will divide it horizontally 5 times to match with the 5 home screens on the N1). Much to my dismay, it actually renders it differently (showing almost 3 of the 192px blocks on the center screen).
When swiping back and forth, it seems like there is some sort of parallax scrolling going on. You can see a full screen of apps/widgets (480px wide) scroll to the side, but you will see the background move some other amount of pixels. It's almost as though the background is scaled in some fashion horizontally. I was assuming it would somehow work like the home screens on the N900, where each screen has 1 block of 800x480 wallpaper space...
Anyone have some insight into what is going on here?

I'm not exactly sure what resolution the backgrounds are, but the "parallax scrolling" has been used in Android since the G1.
If you pick an off-sized background, the OS will tell you to crop it, and the height width ratio is almost square. Anyway, each panel of the home screen will share a bit of the background with the adjacent home screens.
Yup, each homscreens background overlaps with the ones on either side of it.
I believe the correct resolution for the N1 is 960x854
The resolution should be 960x800, because the Nexus is not the droid, it's 800 pixels not 854.
And for there to be 5 home screens on 960 wide, it's only going to scroll 1/5th of the image on each home screen. The parallax scrolling is a cool feature.
Of course it's going to show almost 3 of the 192px blocks on the center screen, because the center screen is 480px wide.
960x800 is correct. Additionally, you could've sorted this quickly by pulling the Launcher2.apk from /system/app, then extracting it and checking the size of the default wallpapers.
So here is another question. Does anyone think its possible to change the scrolling of the background (and size) such that it would be 1 480x800 size block PER home screen?

When I had my g1 the Photoshop app would set wallpapers without asking for cropping even 480x800 so I would use iPhone wallpapers cause we allow know most Mac useres are have some skill in graphics design. Anywho when I tried to use this work around on my nexus it did not work, I'm looking further into this!

Came across this. I want to disable scrolling on the background wallpaper too and have a static image. Any updates?
Wallpaper Set & Save is a basic free app from the market that works wonders with hi-res and off-sized images...
Me too
Also having issues with this
Only using one homescreen...and the settings either zooms or stretches the HOMEMADE wallpapers

Yes, you absolutely need this app if you want to change your wallpaper, the built-in gallery just doesn't work.
Wallpaper Set & Save
downloaded, tried...no luck
Yea, it didnt work for me either. I formated some images to 480x800, but it just zooms in on them. Cant believe something so damn simple is so tough.
Guys, I found a solution. It is called Wallpaper Plus. Yes it is $1.99, but it is worth it. Not only can you do 1 static image with no scrolling, it will also let you pick images and "sew them together such that each screen is a different image! So right now I have 5 pictures that I choose, that the program formatted for the size of my screen and stitched together. Now when I scroll through my screens, I see a different image on each one, rather than one large image. But like I said, it can do just one static image as well! I highly recommend. I know the cost sucks, but at some time we need to support these developers making the things we want for our phones if they are gonna stay on the platform and develop more things!

Why is there so much wasted space between icons/widgets on homescreens?

Is there anyway to make better use of the real estate available on the homescreens? The current setup with so much space between icons/widgest seems like a colossal waste of the real estate the higher res N1 screen offers.
IMO, it also detracts from the aesthetic appearance of the homescreens. Especially coming from an iPhone.
I'm hoping this is a legacy issue, due to previous phones having lower res screens and google wil fix this.
So you want them closer together so you can't see your desktop? It's not a "legacy problem", that's how it has always been. There may be a home replacement that will do what you want though.
I think a major effect that seperates the iPhone and android ui is android's spacious desktop. I may be misunderstanding you but it sounds like you're asking why the android desktop isn't more like iphone's cookie cutter application squares, which are somewhat claustrophobic in my humble and often stupid opinion. I personally like the desktop feel of android. Feels like I've got a computer in my pocket...

Been using it a while on one screen you can potentially have 60 apps or so!!!
Mwhahahahahha.........
Because if you add more rows, and then rotate the phone, you will not have enough room without rearranging your home screens.
4 rows in landscape dictates the 4 rows in portrait mode.

But at the time of the phones launch and still, the home screens are portrait only unless you install the hacked mod.
Other android devices (droid/cliq/etc) support landscape views.
They're not doing seperate os's for seperate devices.

The aesthetic bit was just a secondary comment. I may well get used to liking the android layout as much, it may just be that i'm used to seeing the iPhone desgin/layout.
However, the bigger point for me was that I am unable to have anymore icons, despite the higher res screen. Which is particularly annoying when you can see all that space going to waste. It definately looks like another row would fit cofortably.
Only 5 home screens and limited folder functionality, make the problem worse for me.
Which brings me onto my second question, is there a simple app to skin folders and allow you arrange icons as you wish? If this were possible easily, I wouldn't need more homescreens. I don't want to use a new theme as I like the current one for now and would like to use it for a bit while I get used to the phone.

Ok, so the height and number of rows is fixed so that they can be mapped without any manipulation to landscape mode. Which from rough measurement appears to be the case.
I guess the issue is not so much with icons/shortcuts which can be easily rearranged as they are 1 x 1 units. But moreso with widgets which may not be rearrangeable with a simple rotation. I.E. You couldn't fit five 4 x 4 widgets in landscape without altering the widgets dimensions.
Guess the simplest ways around it would be to prevent rotation if you select more then the standard 4 rows. Or enable scrolling of the home screen in Landscape.
Anyway, thanks for enlightening me.

Try Apps Organizer.
so in another thread (which was closed and pointed here) similar to this, there was the following instructions
Edit /system/build.prop and change this line:
ro.sf.lcd_density=240
Try using 160 instead of 240. I don't think it allows you to fit more on the screen, but definitely changes the effective resolution.
which I used to increase the resolution of the system, it is BEAUTIFUL...but it doesnt map to well with the nexus tray, wondering is someone could point in me the right direction to get the tray to look better, maybe another value in build.prob that needs changing or....?
I would like to see a 5th row, is there an app for that ?

[REQ][widget] picture frame mod

I'm after an interactive version of the stock android picture frame, one that will enable me to jump to the picture's location in gallery.
I know htc has this in their sence, so it should be possible to port it. Unfortunately I don't have the dev skills..
Can somebody help me out?
Regards

It's not what you requested, but I use Desktop Visualizer to make shortcuts of all sizes to apps with my images.
As for a picture frame mod, it'd be great if pic frames could be placed with any sizes chosen and have many shortcut options, instead of only apps like I do with DesktopVizualizer.
thanks mate, its a great app.
Unfortunately for my purpose the original image has to be edited to get the photoframe...
I'd like to be able to change photo as I please, so this might be a bit cumbersome for my use. On the plus side, it can be set up to link to anything such as quickdial or text, and that is nice...

Wallpapers?

I know you can make your own which I don't want to. Are there any fullsize Tab wallpapers (no live wallpapers) which I can download to my Tab and which I don't have to cut specially for the Homescreen before making it a wallpaper? Like the ones which come with 3rd party launchers)...
Thx.

I don't wanna save pictures from the net, as you have to cut them. I said that, rapax.
@AnttiV: Thx, man. Exactly what I'm looking for. A HD Wallpaper app which doesn't use your data (contacts etc.).
The google search I linked to only returns images that already have exactly the right size. No cutting needed.
1 - Guys, flikkie is very nice, but what's the resolution of the pictures it has?
2 - I have a folder with 1024x600 wallapapers and if I try to use them, the gallery crops them, how can I install them? My tab is rooted.

I'm pretty certain you need 1200x1024. Scrolling left and right across the homescreens requires half a screens width to either side of the central screen. If you use a smaller image, what you're effectively doing is scaling it up and then cropping. You end up using a scaled up version of a 703(?)x600 section of your image.
1200x1024?? Where the hell are we going to find wallpapers in that res???
Did you try that?
There may be some different rules on size here since the entire UI supports portrait and landscape. If the rule for a panning static wallpaper is in fact double resolution, then you would need images in 2048x1024 reslolution so that the panning still works correctly in landscape as well.
EDIT: Nope, 1200x1024 appears to be what it prefers to use uses either way, the interface simply scales down the panning percentage when in portrait. Just make sure the subject of the photo is no more than half of the height of the full image or it may look a little funny in portrait.
Flikkie HD's wallapapers aren't so "HD", they look worse than my 1024x600 ones, but they work FINE.
Sigh..someone has to tell us for sure, I can't find any info on that.
Rapax was RIGHT. I checked the default wallapaper found at root / system / wallapaper / default wallpaper and it has the weird...1200x1024 resolution....damn...
@ Beestee - I just saw your edit. Yep..1200x1024 it is...

That explains a lot, thx. I always wondered.
To me the Flikie Wallpapers look good. It's not perfect, but good.
@rapax: Ah, ok thx. I thought because of the different resolution (compared to the display resolution) I had to crop them too. Will try it these days with these wallpaper size!
PROBLEM guys. Even if you try to choose a 1200x1024 wallpaper, it STILL CROPS IT.
The only method that works now is using the Flikkie HD app....
I reckon the only way to use them without being cropped would be to install them in the wallpaper folder.. ( launcher.apk ? )
But if you do that, wouldn't you need a cooked rom? It seems to me the phone would crash if you put any more walls in there..
Hi
I had the same problemes with croppy wallpapers so I wrote a small app to set an wallpaper on the galaxy tab. With this app they won't get scaled or cropped. Start the app, select Wallpaper wait and you have a perfect wallpaper Just be sure that the wallpaper is in the right size.

Guys, just checked the Flikkie HD wallpapers : 960x854
EDIT: Flikkie HD will set the wallapaper even if it has a higher res. Just put a 1280x1024 wallpaper in Flikkie's folder and it worked just fine

[Q] What's a good resolution for Wallpaper?

We all know Android's wallpaper scrolls left/right, so wallpapers are not the size of the screen's resolution.
Anyone figured out what the right size for the Transformer yet?
EDIT: So I used the app "Wallpaper Set & Save" and Saved the stock wallpapers.
Guess what the resolution is.... 1920X1408!!! crazy.
It's 2135 x 1408 pixels. More details in my list here:

The first person who had extracted the default asus trees wallpaper image said that it was 2135x1408pixels, and I had no reason to doubt them. I think what most people aren't realising is that there's an 'overscrolling' part to the image, so when you get to the furthest left or right screen, it scrolls a bit more if you try to keep scrolling. That image posted in the tips thread wasn't exactly to size by the way. It was just a representation of how the panels are, and what screens you see them on. The top and bottom of the image are only shown if you bring up the apps or home menu screen respectively. I'll probably modify it a bit later.
You can use any image and it will stretch it just fine anyways.

A great workaround is the wallpaper slideshow live wallpaper. Just put your 1280x800 image in a folder and select the folder in the settings. Positions perfectly and doesn't scroll off.
here you go... when you go to set the cropping, put the box all the way to upper left and expand it to the bottom right all the way... that should set the image to the center home screen, with some black bars on pane A B D and E... these are inevitable unless if you can source an image that is extra wide... use the image i provided to create the rest of your wallpapers... let me know if you have any issues...
Man, it's really hard making a wallpaper that has a picture of people/things and make it show up correctly, even with the template.
With patterned pictures, it's easy but a picture of something it's hard. Easy to just make it centered and have blank top/bottom/left/right, but it's ugly heh.
I think the Transformer/Honeycomb treats the tablet when setting wallpapers as Portrait instead of Landscape. I'd prefer it Landscape like on phones, makes cropping wallpapers easier.
If you want a wallpaper that works good in both landscape and portrate try
1608 width x 1280 high works good for me
Has anybody been able to get a definative answer on the right resolution to use for custom wallpapers yet? I to have tried a few different ones and am having 0 luck

I created the template, which is just that a template so that people can tell what part of the image will be shown on the wall. The new crop tool in 3.1 helps resolve this issue, but its still nice to build them outside of Android for many reasons.
Never really thought about the over-scrolling. That maybe because I like static walls that do not move. Its much easier to design interesting layouts when they are static.
One think that YOU may be overlooking is the fact that using the crop tool to scale a larger image WILL NOT produce as clear an image as doing so im photoshop and making the image fit with the native resolution of the screen. Is it a large difference in quality? No, but for graphics nerds its noticeable.

These walls are not large enough to be used on these tablets. If you want a good spot for HD walls check out wallbase.net I get most of my walls from there.
On another not this is the EXACT reason why I want an alternative launcher like ADW or LP so that I can stop the background from scrolling.
I think a more important question is the aspect ratio. Can't find the sweet spot for both landscape and portrait wallpaper
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
You can't use 2135x1408pixels because when you go to the gallery to fetch the wallpaper you select the image and you are confronted by the 'selection block' (where you have to drag the area to select your wallaper) and 2135x1408pixels doesn't fit within the parameters eg: it's to wide.
If you want to use something that big use 2135x1700
after searching around and trial/error, i've found that 2048x1504 works fine for me...
