Hey guys I am newbie to the Android system and i new how to do literally everything with hacking my iphone and now I have a nexus one. my question is how do I send text messages with pic or video clips without having a data plan with Tmobile. I have no use for the data plan anyone know? thought I would ask here It was suggested to me. thnx
well...
I had a g1 for the longest time, and recently, about 2 weeks ago after i got my nexus one, i just started being able to send and recieve mms messages. I did not change any apns and i do NOT have any sort of data plan. Im not sure why this is possible...
MMS doesn't use the data plan. It uses a separate APN. Having an unlimited data plan doesn't suddenly make sending and receiving MMSs free, it'll still cost you.
Thnx guys but I am aware you can send a regular text without pics or videos thats why i posred my topic but I was told by T-Mobile WITHOUT 3G OR DATA PLAN I CAN'T SEND PIC OR VID TEXTS I know there has to be a way even if its rooted come on if I could do it with an iPhone on another network WITHOUT 3G OR DATA why not with a Nexus One? There's gotta be a hack or something if anyone knows I'd appreciate it thnx for responses
Did you read cymru's comment? It's nothing to do with text messages, it's MMS.
MMS is handled entirely separately from other data so even without a data plan, you can send MMS if you have the correct APN settings. I am assuming you are US in which case:
http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Carrier_APN_Settings#T-Mobile
Go into Settings > Wireless and networks > Mobile networks > Access Point Names and put the details in there.
Tmo employee here. SMS plans include MMs there is no need for a 3g data plan to send or receive picture or video messages. check your apn settings.
try SmSchomp
Are you guys 100% sure about this?
Android phones used to have a loop hole where we did not need a data plan to send out MMS, but then T-mobile changed that. It was REQUIRED to have the data plan to send MMS, just the way they did with the Blackberry back in the day, do you guys remember that? Probably not. They then decided to allow people to send photos without the blackberry plan.
Unless t-mobile decided to allow people to send out MMS without a data plan on an ANDROID phone then the plan is still required. I currently have the Nexus one and 2 months ago I was not able to send MMS without a data plan. I have a long history with t-mobile and i have seen all these changes that benefit their pocket. There was no need for a plan when the g1 was first introduced, then we were able to use the $4.99 plan with the android, but now we can only use the Android Data Plan.
Do any of you guys have an android phone without a data plan that can send out MMS? excluding sassyness77, I dont know what the exception is there. I would specially like to hear a response from the Tmobile Rep that chimed in.
@3shirts
I am aware that you can send a "regular SMS" but with a pic or video it doesn't work I tried the settings still a no go thnx
@infinityhombre
I called T-Mobile and configured the settings with them on the phone at customer service and didn't work then they put me on hold and called Google and came back and told me WITHOUT A DATA PLAN YOU CANNOT SEND PICTURE OR VIDEO TEXT MESSAGES JUST REGULAR TEXT MESSAGES unless you can prove otherwise? Everyone reading this including me would like to know thnx
THERE IS NOT A CURRENT WAY TO SEND MMS OVER WIFI!!!!!!! Also a TMO employee and since T-mobile uses WAP to send MMS and NO android device has WAP it has to go thru GPRS and unless you have a data plan NO MMS!!! No you might want to look into IM files thru wifi but other wise not possible YET!

Perhaps android is different but other 3g phones have no trouble sending mms with no data. i have always been told that mms is independent of data plans. i could be wrong i dont deal with the account aspect i work in rf.
I have been told that these settings work for g1 mms with no data plan on tmous so i dont see why they wont work on an n1
Change the apn settings to the following:
Name: T-Mobile US
APN: wap.voicestream.com
proxy: 216.155.165.050
port: 8080
Username: not set (delete everything in this field)
Password: not set (delete all here too)

MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.050
MMS Port: 8080
MMC: 310
MNC: 260
APN type: not set
in mobile networks and enable ‘data roaming’ and ‘use only 2G’
Restart your phone. Now your MMS should work

You are correct in what you have stated above. Most other 3g phones, with the exception of blackberry and android, will send MMS without data plan on T-mobile.

No offense to you or android but with the iphone it was so easy I guess I am just used to that from b4. I could hack the **** out if and send all kind of messages only on EDGE. thnx again if anyone else has an idea please feel free to post it thnx everyone

I not sure how T-mobile do, I not from USA.
As I know, In my country, all telco not forcing you to get any Data package and the MMS still work, off course it charge your MMS.
You still need to have Data Package activate (will count on usage charging, no charge if not use), and MMS APN to let MMS work (any kind of phone) but not a neccessary to subsribe a Data Package Plan.
Ha this guy DrJB is a major douche. I can't stand his dirty mouth and caps typing.
It's the same with ATT. You can't send/receive mms or videos without data plan. When I blocked data on my line, ATT rep stated I won't be able to do those things.
Stop being poor/cheap, buy the data plan, use your phone like you're supposed to! It's possibly to afford a data plan making minimum wage, I know plenty of people who do that while paying rent and bills.

Agreed.
Why in the hell would you ever get a smart phone without a data plan?
Smart phones are a luxury and they cost more than other phones. If you can't afford a smart phone + data plan, then go get yourself a Moto Razor and stop complaining.

Buddy, understand that it is not the phone.
PLEASE READ THIS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD.
T-Mobile has blocked every android phone from using those MMS settings, you are wasting your time by trying. There are many people that have tried sending MMS without Data plan including myself and they have made it impossible.
The iphone is able to do it because T-mobile is not trying to screw you over with a data plan on that phone. You could even have the cheap data plan for the iphone and all features would be possible. I know this because I have unlocked and hacked my wifes iphone.
At this point I would recommend to GET THE DATA PLAN, OR STOP COMPLIAINING! another option would be to go back to your overly outdated cliched iphone.
Sorry dude, but that is the best recommendation I can give you.

hello,
I currently have 2 cellphone: Iphone (old one) with Edge dataplan from att.
and HTC Polaris.
I was using HTC Polaris with the SIM from Iphone and e/thing was working just fine untill today, when I was unable to use the Internet connection. My skype still connects but my emails and internet explorer and msn don't connect to the network.
Also, earlier I was able to connect to 3G with HTC.
So, I wanted to know what is going on? Is it because that my HTC is trying to connect to 3G network and thats why my access is blocked or is there anyways to fix it?
Thanks.
No.
I had a motorola RAZR (not even edge!, its just regular gprs) with at&t, got the unlimited media net data for 15$ a month, popped the sim out, put it in a polaris and now i get unlimited 3G for 15$ a month.
It's gotta be something with your connection settings and / or your radio rom possibly? Run the connection setup again and try that.
Everything works for me too on ATT, and I'm on some other data plan not the PDA Data plan. The one thing that doesn't work for me is MMS. I think it might have something to do with Proxy settings, although not sure. It's kinda annoying actually.
MMS works for me, but it's hella expensive.
I have a text plan that includes 200 text messages and pay per use MMS.
It's like 75 cents per MMS i believe.
i have unlimited everything. unlimited data, text, mms. the thing is i can't even receive mms, let alone send.
do you have any proxy settings? my settings show now proxy. with a proxy i can only update weather but i can't do anything else. with no proxy i can actually use opera and other wireless data functions.
i wonder if this has something to do with the fact that i did have an iphone data plan before switching to another one. (no i don't have an iphone, long story though) maybe in att system they still think i have an iphone (since the iphone doesn't send or receive mms and might not use the proxy)?

Yeah I have all those settings. I am not however using any proxy settings, don't know if that matters. I get a series of errors when I try to upload or download an MMS. When it uploads it gets to 99% then it doesn't send it. when can't remember what happens it tries to receive, something about forbidden. I've seen several people complain about it on the forum but none of those fixes work.
MMS used to work at some point, so I don't know what happened. It might have something to do when my account was on an iPhone data plan for a few hours. Maybe that messes with the proxy settings / MMS settings for that account??
Hello!
I have seen the threads on blurry MMS messages in the US.....which has been more or less fixed.....anyone in the UK have any idea how we get this fixed over here?!
I have contacted O2 and they have said the phone is not officially supported by them and therefore they cannot assist (although I bought the phone on a 2 year contract with them!!!). They have advised I take the phone back to Carphone warehouse and get another model as they cannot give me a date when the Nexus S will be supported.
Anyone have a work around for this in the UK? Surely I'm not the only one in the UK with this issue?
Regards
G
UPDATE

Have just spoken with O2 technical data services and they have confirmed there is nothing at all they can do and the phone apparently should be used on the network and they have no plans in the near future to support the phone and they advised I get a refund.
If anyone in the UK has found a work around for this on one of the other networks please let me know as I love the phone agh!! Its available on all the UK networks from Carphone Warehouse/Bestbuy....need to know if they have a fix!
Just tried sending an MMS to myself (may not be a valid test ) and pic looks fine.
On O2 UK (Simplicity package) using Handcent SMS. Rooted running 2.3.1 at the moment.
I've played around with the "stock" APN's which may or may not be relevant - happy to post settings if needed.
Yeah if you could post setting so I can compare that would be great!
I have tried sending a pic from the camera to myself and thats blurry also! As well as ones other people have sent me.
Dont know if its the phone settings then or something in your rooted ROM may have rectified it? Hmm...
I'm not in the UK, but 2.3.1 corrected the blurry mms for me.

which network are you on?
i believe there is some switch that can be turn on/off on the network.
when i first switch from iphone to N1, i have similar problem.
sending a MMS to iphone is not a issue (other than needing to manually resize the picture), but upon receiving MMS, it comes in a very small picture.
at that time, i heard other users on other network does not have this issue.
if you have friends on other network, maybe you will want to borrow their sim to give it a try.

When you took these APN details and put them in...did you get a green circle by them? When I entered all the details in manually.....I havent got a green circle and after reboot the net/mms wouldnt work at all! Had to "restore default" to get them back (still blurry!! haha)
You get the green circle for the default APN (afaik this should be set to the 3G/Data APN you have setup)
I don't have a green circle (MMS APN set as default) next to the MMS APN either.
You should also ensure you have your 3G/data APN set as default (use the settings on that post if needed) and just delete the other APN's from the list.

Outgoing MMS is fine, resizes ok....and an be viewed on the other handsets with no issues.....its only incoming MMS that goes blurry beyond recognition
Firstly thanks to Highland3r this post with the MMS APN settings got sending and receiving working on my Nexus S! Secondly also being on O2 UK I concur the MMS messages all come through with low res small scaled pictures. I had the same issue on my previous HTC hero too.
Its definitely down to O2 not recognising the capabilities/supporting the phone type so it defults to the lowest res/size their MMS server supports.
OP you got a complete BS answer off O2 - They should simply add the nexus S into their list of supported phones and ensure their MMS server knows about them!
Sorry to bring up such an old thread but did anyone manage to solve the problem of the blurry mms's? I'm on giffgaff which uses the o2 network and have the same problem. Funnily enough it seemed fine when I first used it and friends pictures that they sent me were coming through at about 200k. I recently had to do a reinstall of the firmware and im having troubles now. I can send myself a picture via the stock app or gosms and can see it has resized it to 150k+ for outgoing but when I receive it back it has resized to anything below 20k making it un viewable.
I started using the Handcent SMS app, instead of the stock one, and it seemed to fix the problem for me

Just switched over from the iPhone 3GS. I am not receiving all my text messages.
I am getting 90% of them but my wife and friends sent me several that I never received. Also I am unable to send pics through MMS. I can receive them put can not send them. I bought chompSMS (because I was so use to Bite on the iphone) and was wondering if this has been any problem with some you all. I tried the native message app and same thing. Also I did not change my plan, it was a upgrade. Unlimited data, text and phone services.
Also, I was familiar with changing the ROMS on blackberry's and I jailbreak several iphones but MANNN the language used for rooting droid phones have me clueless. Is there any step by step site that speaks in layman terms for a complete newbie to the droid OS. No clue to what some of these terms mean. As a beginner to the droid OS it is a little over whelming IMO.
task like Flashing, creating a goldcard, custom recovery etc... Every root step process I was able to find assumed you new what a lot of this stuff is. Is there such instructions out there.
Ok flame away, we all have our strong areas, and Droid is not one of mine just yet...

how did it turn out?
Well the tech had me re-set my phone and that didnt help. I removed chompSMS and then I was able to send MMS pictures. I loaded up handset and was also able to send MMS pics. So it looks like chomps was the issue. I just email their support for some advise. I bought a copy and I do prefer it over handse sms.
PS
I do have MMS under the ALN name, its just doesn't have the green circle check next to it like the media net does.
I want to thank you for your responses!
Whenever I receive a text with pictures, it displays a downloading bar. When i click on it, it turns into a "downloading" and nothing happens. I've talked with customer support and they've suggested to add the apn on their site even though the phone already came with it by default. I don't have a data plan yet, so I'm not sure if this might be the problem. Any ideas?
Bump, anyone have this trouble also?
Tried calling for custom support, used the right settings for APN. Still cannot send pictures.
Data plan
Well, MMS does use the data and if you dont have a data plan and you are on prepaid service, you might not be able to use data at all. I'm pretty sure that in Mobilicity's case, the data used by MMS is just counted out of your data plan, its not a sepperate MMS messaging charge or anything like that. Also, make sure you have the correct APN settings, they have it on their website.
I do have the correct APN settings, MOWAP and MOMMS as detailed here.
Mobilicity has MMS for all their plans, regardless of data plan. That was exactly my first assumption that since I did not have a data plan, that pictures were not sending or receiving through.
Anyone have a nexus s with mobilicity experiencing the same problem? I've been calling custom support 6 times now, being asked to visit a local dealer, to a warranty support dealer, to back to the customer support help, and then to the samsung customer support. I've been going in circles, tried using a "demo" sim card in one of the mobilicity dealer place, no fix.
I don't have data plan. i can receive and sent mms

in order to receive or sent mms you have to check "data enabled "
Well, I got my problem fixed! Apparently you DO need a data plan to receive pictures over mms. The plan states that phones can receive them without the data plan, but smartphones handles pictures differently than regular phones.
I tested out at one of the local stores, and it works. Not sure if like you said, I just need to have "data" on, or actually have the data plan. I'll try the first when my month runs out. Thanks!
Sorry for the bump but i thought it would be better than creating a new thread for the same problem. anyhow, I've recently picked up a nexus s from mobi (with the $25 data plan) and im having problems with the MMS. I usually get a message with the size details, and a "download" button, same problem as you had, it changes to "downloading", then nothing happens.
If i scroll up in the conversation so that the "downloading" button disappears, then scroll down, it's just back to "download." Sometimes (maybe 10% of the time), the message will come up as it should, with no "download" button, the picture just shows up.
ive double and triple checked that the APN settings are 100% correct, so that can't be the problem. I manually updated to the official release of ICS 4.0.3 (from this thread) last night, but it didnt work before either (came stock with 2.3.4) Sorry for the life story, but thanks for any help.
I'm not sure which version of CM11 this began in or if it's even the cause but this is the only real major change I have on the phone. It was working fine before, but lately I've noticed LTE slowdowns to speeds like 60K and 130K. I used to get around 30Mbit and apps would just download so fast and I'd have no issues streaming YouTube videos. Before I waste my time contacting AT&T dealing with tier 1 support who knows less than I do about my phone I wanted to check with XDA.
I'm using AT&T GoPhone as my provider. Specifically the plan called "$45 monthly available at Walmart" https://www.paygonline.com/websc/rateplans.html (Note, you don't have to go to Walmart at all for this, I changed over to this plan form the $60 one when I noticed they added it to the list.)

IS there anything I can do to fix this issue, or troubleshoot it further or do I need to just contact AT&T?

I'm not sure which version of CM11 this began in or if it's even the cause but this is the only real major change I have on the phone. It was working fine before, but lately I've noticed LTE slowdowns to speeds like 60K and 130K. I used to get around 30Mbit and apps would just download so fast and I'd have no issues streaming YouTube videos. Before I waste my time contacting AT&T dealing with tier 1 support who knows less than I do about my phone I wanted to check with XDA.
I'm using AT&T GoPhone as my provider. Specifically the plan called "$45 monthly available at Walmart" https://www.paygonline.com/websc/rateplans.html (Note, you don't have to go to Walmart at all for this, I changed over to this plan form the $60 one when I noticed they added it to the list.)

first things first.. do you find out if it was your provider? if not, call your provider.

right.
first thing you need to do is contact your provider. whats the point of doing troubleshooting if the issue is with your provider. if its not the provider, we will go on.

Alright will do
also, you can try these lines.. they need to be added to your /system/build.prop/, saved and then rebooted for them to take affect.

I called and told them that the speeds are slow for downloading and streaming and they asked if I'd like to "add more megabytes to my phone". She was stuttering like crazy and having trouble completing her sentences. She was clearly reading from a guide and took long pauses between all her questions. This is why I hate speaking with providers .
She asked when it started happening and I said this month. Then she asked if it's also slow when I access websites on my phone. I explained that it isn't visually slow but that it wouldn't make sense for a mobile website to load slow. Then she asked how long it's been happening, "2 weeks?" I explained about the entire month. She asked if I have an LG phone then I said yes. She asked how many apps or games I download per day, I said less than one and she asked "how long will it took you to complete those downloads?". I explained it depends on file size. She said "it also depends on the details that say that certain application [unclear] megabyte [unclear] megabyte so it will be easier to do that. Mhm, there. so is there any error message any time you try to download applications?" I said no.
She asked for my zip code to check the outage in my area. She said thanks for letting them know I'm concerned with "my issues" and that they are "reporting a case here" and "providing information to their support". They added 50MB of data allowance to my phone plan. She kept going back and forth between adding $10 credit and adding 50MB of data, then she said 500MB of data for $10. Then she started calling it "megabits". I checked, they added 500MB.
She transferred me to tech support and I explained the situation. She asked me if the problem is that the speed is slow and when did this start happening, despite arleady providing this information. It's like they have some kind of form to fill out and they don't listen and just select things from dropdown boxes or something. After confirming my account she also asked if I'm on the $45 monthly plan, shouldn't they already know this? What a waste of time.. She asked what type of phone I have next then asked if it's AT&T branded. Then she read off the APN settings I should use (lol she said forward-slash forward-slash). She said APN type should be "default, mms, supl, hipri". She called Bearer "barrier" and I asked about APN roaming protocol and MVNO type and she said they don't have that. After changing the APN type the speeds were still slow.
She said she's going to refresh their connection with my phone and asked me to power it off, then a moment later to power it on. It was still slow so she asked for my city, state, and ZIP code. She said the towers in my area are definitely not the problem. By this time I noticed that the APN settings reverted, and I found there's an option I have to select to save the APN after changing it so I went and added that again, and informed her. Did another power cycle. No change. She asked if I recently downloaded keyboard or messenger apps and if there's any liquid or physical damage and how old my SIM card is. Next I was asked how often I update the software on the phone.
She said she's creating a case and the NOC will take care of it. She said she's going to credit my account and understands the frustration. She asked for the Android version and about what date I remember it last working properly. That was a 57 minute phone call that resolved nothing But I did it!
Let's get started?
EDIT: Saw you replied while I was on the phone, going to try that out now.
try adding those lines i posted to your build.prop, save, then reboot. let me know if theres a difference.

we can check if its cm.. make a nandroid backup in your recovery, then fully wipe and flash a stock or aosp rom. if the data speeds improve, then its cm. you can always restore your backup to get back to where you were in cm.
I know this is unrelated to your plan or helpful but reading that att has been accused of throttling back users download speeds for more expensive data plans
www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/28/att-slowing-speeds-data-throttling-ftc_n_6062360.html
As above you should try another rom/stock and see if speeds improve.
Interesting, the date makes this throttling idea very plausible. I made a backup, but before I got around to flashing any ROMs I took a nap and when I woke up I noticed I had no signal at all. Not 0/4 bars no signal, but no signal as in can't connect to the network. I tried toggling the connection and got nothing. I tried toggling airplane mode next, and still nothing. I reboot the phone and had signal again. I decided to do a speed test and the speeds are back to normal now.
(As I typed this I was watching that news video and that doesn't apply to me necessarily because it's contract-based. They were talking about "Unlimited Data" plans. I had the plan that allowed me 2GB per month (later 2.5GB) then switched to the 1GB allowance plan a couple months ago.)
Anyways here we go:
