PRLs..truths or myths? - General Topics

Well I am new to this forum, so hopefully this is posted in the correct area...if not maybe it will be moved to where it needs to be...anyways...
I just switched to Verizon and purchased an Incredible, which I love (another topic).....But now I have a question about PRLs. Seems that my main "work" location is not in normal coverage, and I got much better Sprint service.
I called the local techs, (who have upgraded PRLs on other verizon phones that my friends have with Excellant results) and they said that "smartphones" can not use this "hybrid" PRL.
So what is a hybrid PRL. Can it be one that is "not" offical? Or is it just older? And why wouldn't it work with a smartphone?
Any clarifications or suggestions are welcome...btw I tried a XDA topic="Flashing the VZW/Alltel Hybrid PRL( Helps a lot for some !)" with no improvement service improvement. I think they use a "sprint" tower in this "Hybrid" PRL.

why dont you just switch to a a hybrid prl to see if it works. if it does not work switch back to your old prl.

Well the local tech will not load the PRL on my phone...He says it wont work with the "?smartphones?" so thats why I have not tried it. Looking on my friends phone <non-smartphone> the PRL is listed as 50697, which I do not have access too.
The newest PRL that is currently on my phone is 65132, which was received via the normal *228...
I'm still confused about the following.
1. When they say "hybrid" prl do you know if this is referring to an old prl? Or a custom one some tech modified?
2. Also if I use another PRL is it possible to get any hidden charges? (ie if I try some older PRLs.)
3. Are verizon customers allowed to "Roam" off of Sprint towers?
4. Can I personally rip the 50697 PRL off of another phone? (ie VX5500)
Thanks again for any suggestions or help.

Using the Sprint TP2 on AT&T network

I have a sim & security unlocked Sprint phone touch pro 2 that we use on the AT&T network, USA. It works well, and registers with AT&T, but then after a bit it gets dropped, and pops up asking if you want to register with the network again. My friend has the same thing, and we are using different ROMs, and have tried different radios, but we both have this same issue. Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this issue, maybe a registry edit or something?
thanks.
I'm also curious about this. I'm on Verizon and was given the phone to keep from my last employer and my new one uses AT&T. I haven't done enough digging yet but wanted to *bump* this thread as I'm looking to keep my CDMA VZN phone and use it on AT&T permanently and wanted to know if there are others who have done this already.
*Anyone had success with using their CDMA phone with AT&T/Tmobile without GSM disconnecting as the OP mentions?

wooties, I read somewhere where the verizon touch pro2 works for AT&T GSM in the us, but not sure where. Search xda and ppcgeeks. I have the Sprint touch pro 2.
I just answered this one in another thread, so here is a copy and paste...
With your AT&T SIM in you probably need to set to manual network instead of automatic so it stays connected to AT&T and doesn't try to flip back to CDMA - if you've already one this, then someone else will have to jump in, but the settings are:
All Settings > Personal > Phone > Network (tab) > Mode of Operation = GSM/UMTS Only
This should keep it from jumping back to Sprint and then back to AT&T where it asks you to register again...
Remember though, with a CDMA world phone, you will only get 2G coverage here with your data as the 3G radio is a different frequency.
Hopefully that does the trick - and if not, someone else jump in and save them quick!

[Q] Help with PRLs

I have a few question about PRLs, answer what you can or all if you are able if you want
1) I have a ns4g flashed to boost. Can it run on a Verizon PRL?
2) Im on a sprint PRL atm should i switch to a boost PRL to get my data to work?
3) Do different PRls affect my data speed and reception bars?
Thanks
Im in another country but ill see if i can answer it
1) Boost, referring as your carrier, you cant run verizon because it is a totally different company. Its like putting your car keys for your car into your front door. It simply does not match. boost only works for sprint mobiles btw.
2) Yes you should. Since i said boost only works on sprint mobiles. Boost is....well reviews say it is a faster/better "extra" carrier. it is reccommended to get some expert to flash your phone for you or you know what your doing so your phone will work on that network completely, not just talk or text but everything.
3) You need to know which PRL's (preffered roaming list) you need/want. Some area's just dont work. You need an expert, or the person you got your boost mobile from.

[Q] I'm pretty sure it's not possible but...

I figured I'd ask here. I'm almost certain that it isn't possible at all to do but you never know what the great devs here at XDA has come up with.
I have a HTC HD7s from ATT. It's a GREAT phone in my opinion. Never had a single problem with it; but I did with AT&T. They were just; lacking in terms of anything in my local area.
Now for my question; It's probably not possible but like I said you never know until you ask. I am currently running on Sprint service with my Epic 4G Touch. Love the service as it does what I need it to do (a lot better then AT&T ever did). Now AT&T is GSM if I'm correct and I know sprint is CDMA.
But what could I change my HD7s over to via flashing/custom roms or whatnot. I doubt sprint would even think of being an option; but if there's a way to get it on even a pre-pay service; I'd love to have it sitting around as a backup phone if I ever needed it. So is it possible to flash over my HD7s to any other carriers? I have read that my current phone can actually be flashed to multiple other carriers, but with sprints (decent) service, there's no need.
Thanks ahead of time!
Your HD7S cannot work on a CDMA network (Sprint, Verizon) because it lacks the necessary radio hardware. No amount of flashing can fix that.
If it's unlocked, you can use it on any GSM network, however; no flashing would be required for that. The most obvious example of a non-AT&T GSM network in the USA is T-Mobile. Your phone will work on T-Mobile but won't get 3G due to lack of AWS UMTS support -- in other words, it doesn't have support for T-Mobile's 3G frequency.
If you can find a virtual network operator that uses AT&T's network, then you should be able to use your phone on that network and get 3G. I'm not up on which operators that might include.
The specific thing you need for your phone is a "SIM-unlock" which means removing the restriction that AT&T puts on their phones to prevent using SIM cards from other carriers. Typically, AT&T will remove this lock for you if you ask them, but otherwise there are sites online that can sell you unlock codes or you could try calling HTC.
3. Post only using a clear subject and message.
You're most likely to receive a helpful answer to your question if you use a short subject title that describes your problem and a message that explains in detail what your problem is and what you've tried to solve it.

Please use search function, most of the questions are already answered. If you still need to post your doubts please do it in an existing thread. Is really no need to open a new thread with same topic. Dispersed information helps to nobody.

Lot's of questions. One at a time. One thread.

I recently left the United States, and now my phone isn't working as smoothly as I would like it to. So, now I have lots of question. I also missed the 4.3 OTA update, not sure if I even really need it from the flyer I looked at on VZW website. First things first.
I arrived in Buenos Aires 2 weeks ago and signed up with a local service called Claro, got a chip, found APN's and was online. Pretty smooth. However, I was stuck on the Edge network. So, after almost 2 weeks of pulling hair out and searching on the web for the problem. I called VZW global services and they told me that Claro is who they use for there PRL (preferred roaming list) and that if I use Claro's service with my VZW phone I will be locked in Claro's Edge network and never get 3g or HSPA+. They told me to use a different service in Buenos Aires if I want to get 3g or HSPA+. So I cancelled the Claro service and went to the other companies and their plans totally suck. None of the plans here are really that good, but Claro had the best plan for me.
My first question for this thread is, if I root my phone will it remove VZW's PRL from my S3 and allow me to get Claro's 3g and HSPA+ connection, or is there a way to remove the PRL?
Please help me figure this stuff out. I'm seriously tired of digging through forums. I feel like I have been devoting so much of my energy to a silly phone. :cyclops:
I don't think rooting the phone will get you anything new related to phone service, roaming, or priority access lists.
I don't know much about how PRL's work, but rooting your device might be the first step needed to tinker with embedded phone settings and flashing roms that might do what you need.
I found this: http://www.androidcentral.com/how-update-your-prl-your-cdma-device
may not apply to S3, but could be useful.

Thanks for reply.
I did some reading on PRL's, so yeah, I don't want to mess with that stuff on my phone.
I went to another carrier here in the city and I'm stuck on the same network, Edge. Basically I'm back at the same place as before and I was fed some bull**** from VZW global support. So, I called VZW global support again got totally frickin' nowhere! I should of bought an AT&T phone I wouldn't have this problem right now. [email protected]#k VZW, they sell a product and call it a "global phone" but then it has limitations in other countries, that's not [email protected]#cking "global." God bless corporate America! So fed up with phones right now, I was so much happier with a flip phone.

How to update PRL? What is everyones PRL?

After lurking around the forums a bit, I've noticed lots of peoples PRL's (Preferred Roaming List) are different for this phone.
Mine is still the original: 15319. Some people have 15342, some people have a PRL somewhere in the middle of those.
Someone suggested turning phone off, taking the SIM card out, turning on for a full boot, shutting down, and put the SIM card back in. This did not update it.
*228 technically should have updated PRL, but it didn't.
My only guess, PRL's on Verizon are pushed out by area on an "as needed" basis. Maybe some states which are not strong in Verizon, but strong for Verizons roaming partners.
From previous experience on a different carrier, PRL was a big deal when roaming. It meant the difference of picking up 3G versus 1x, and sometimes if you had an old PRL, you would not get data at all, only voice while Roaming.
What do you guys think? Does anyone know a way to update the PRL on Verizon? What are your PRL's?
To find your PRL:
Settings > About > Software information. Should be second from the bottom.
I'm on 15319 as well. I have heard there is no way to update PRL and no need. It'll update on its own if needed.
Sent via Tapatalk on my Big Red M8
Mine was 15319 until I updated to the newest firmware. Now it's15342. The only time I've seen a change is when the firmware/radios are updated. If anything, the performance in low signal areas is even worse!
