New Swype hire to handle all beta user and forum relations! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Greetings fellow Android users!
I wanted to take a moment to let everyone here know that I've just been added to the team at SwypeInc specifically to handle the overwhelming amount of emails and forum posts related to the Swype beta for Android. The staff at Swype care deeply about their users, and went out of their way to get in touch with me - an avid Swype user and supporter - fly me to their offices in Seattle, and hire me to help with their ongoing community interactions. We know that a lot of users have felt somewhat neglected regarding our ability to respond quickly to their requests for support, and are eager to do something about that issue!
So for those of you who are Swype beta users (and if you aren't, head over to beta.swype.com to be added once we re-open registration!), I encourage you to log in to our forums (http://swype.uservoice.com), post your questions, feature requests, or other concerns, or email me at [email protected]. I'll make sure you receive the attention that everyone here at SwypeInc feels you deserve.
I look forward to helping Swype and the Android community grow the relationship that has already helped us improve Swype, and hopefully improve the way you all enter text on your Android-powered devices.

New language dictionaries is an ongoing priority for Swype. Our development team is working all the time to add more languages. Currently, there are a number of languages that we have dictionaries for that aren't included in the beta. Dutch is actually included in this list. For a full list of languages supported (and planned additional supported languages), see this thread on the Swype forums: http://swype.uservoice.com/forums/17482-swype/suggestions/443262-swype-s-language-support-
This post is a bit old, but it should serve its purpose
I'll pass along your desire to have Dutch (and other languages) included in the beta and hopefully we'll be able to add them to future beta releases. Thanks for the feedback!

You will rarely see a beta update that reflects perfectly a partner release, because most of our partners customize Swype to their liking for the device it's being released on. The beta, on the other hand, is a stock/standard configuration that Swype uses internally as our base recommendation to our partners. So, no, there is no update to the MyTouch version. But there should be an update coming down the line sometime relatively soon.

No more searching for free hosting space to place your ROMs with limited download speeds and 60 second waiting periods for downloaders.

We have been hard at work creating better tools for you developers to manage your releases on Community Release.
Along with the new site release we just made, you now have the following features:
Browser based File Manager and/or FTP Access to your Files.
Dedicated Forum area with Full moderation rights.
Full release access to the Community Release Database.
A FREE central repository for the Android Community with FREE, Unlimited bandwidth File Hosting.
We are constantly working on the site and some of the functionality we are developing is:
Each developer NOW HAS their own section in our forums where you can post all the info about your ROMs.
You will also have ROM upload space (no more searching for free accounts) and your ROM files will be tied to the database so people can download them directly and not have to switch between the ROM database and XDA or whatever else.
You will have full access to anything related to your ROMs so you can keep the info up to date.
We will provide any RSS / XML streams for other people to use for almost anything. So if you want to write a single ROM update program for the Android Phones, you can write the app and take the latest info directly from the ROM database. This will mean that the data will always be the latest info from a common location as long as we can get your support.
You’d be able to see how many times you’re ROM has been downloaded and how the community rates it. It’s up to the you and the community to let us know what you want from the system.
As users, you can register in the system and then follow:

Rate the releases you like so other know if they are good or not.
Soon you wil be able to leave comments with your ratings too
We want to do this right. We want to build something that the community will really use.
This is just the start of things to come but we need need your input!!!
What do you want to see?
What will help you get your ROMs, Themes, Applications and more out to the community quickly and easily?
Please contact me at [email protected] with your contact information and include the information listed below (or as much as you feel comfortable sharing) and any thoughts and suggestions no matter how wild they may seem. We'll consider anything.
I'm setting up profiles for everyone for developer accounts that would include:
Full Name
Email Address
Nick Name
Location (or at least time zone)
Twitter Account
Blog Page
Home page
A brief description about yourself and what you develop
That should do for now.
Thanks again.

awesome thanks =) i was thinking about switching from jf1.5 now i wont, since Hbuild doesnt support google synce
Good idea! This should be stickied if you can do a comparison table with all the builds.
One little typo, JF ADP 1.5 does not come with AIM/Yahoo/MSN out of the box.

Thanks.
I'll make the change.
Keep them coming.
The more info I can get, the better.
A couple of corrections:
1. Haykuro's 5.0.x builds (both H and G) are based on Android 1.5, not 1.1.
2. Haykuro's 5.0.xH builds do indeed do Google sync, there's just no way to configure it.
What do S and E mean? Standard and ?
all the builds are 1.5cupcake

all builds have Virtual Keyboard, either HTC IME or Standard.
"Enhanced" perhaps?
EDIT: Whoops, I didn't realise people replied so quickly on this forum ><

[/!\ Warning /!\] Please do no post Swype apk's

As Swype is only available as a limited closed beta or as part of an OEM android build, please do no post any links to the swype apk files.
I'm the beta community relations rep for Swype (Brian Resnik, if you're over on the Swype forums).
First of all, yes we're watching you HAHA. I'm obligated to wag my finger at you all for distributing our software without a license. A little patience will go a long way. Trust me, the more the brass hears about people illegally copying Swype and feeling entitled to a free version (yes, we know there's no copy on the market for you to buy, but you have to respect that OEM distribution is our chosen business model), the less they want to support a beta program at all. The better we play nice with eachother, the sooner more people get into the beta!

lol, I'll re-instate the deleted threads after the public beta is out tomorrow. Great find.
Yes people, stop distributing the beta swype. If you didnt get to sign up then its your lose. By the way I got my invitation today
in all reality lets respect what the swype developers want.
Whew. Glad I got my Beta Key early. >:3
Just go to beta.swype.com and register. When we open the gates again, you'll be first to know and install.
Sounds awesome, but I'll believe it when I see it.
That's why I follow this forum, and a several Android™ blogs.
It was through them, that I found out about the Beta program.
I also received my Swype Beta app
If you didn't get an invite but you registered, go to the beta website, login and ask them to resend your invitation. Worked for me.
Got an invitation as well, it's soo good. Wish it had the look of the stock keyboard though. I like the consistency across the UI and apps.
I got my invitation today, too I love swype!
but how are those of us who are part of the beta supposed to get themed versions. you guys need to hurry up and make it skin-able. Also, even if you did kill the beta program... we would still get it. We always do.

and the open beta will be again:
- time limited 90 days?
- only 3 languages?
I am from Austria and i got my invitation for English, Spanish and Italian too today.. funny...
Would be great to see the official multilanguage version tomorrow (+ the option to buy it LOOOOL... funny joke )
I know you hate me anyway.
Swype has updated their page with the new beta instructions. It appears at this point to be a limited public beta, as it will only be available for a couple of days, and requires you to enter your email address to get the download.
So threads with download links will still not be allowed.
Get the info here; http://beta.swype.com/
What version is being pushed for the public beta?
I'll tell you as soon as it actually lets me download it. The site is laggy as hell and it has failed installing/activating several times now.
Most likely due to high volumes of people trying to install it.
I'd almost rather just wait and install it the less-than-legal way.
I stand corrected. Glad they opened the beta.
see this is an honorable request and all... but it's kinda annoying when your site is down and lagged as hell due to volumes of requests. at least place the files somewhere else.
think of linux distros. why do they resort to p2p downloading too? hmmm. maybe its something small sites should look into when they don't have bandwidth to begin with....
Was anyone able to download it on Froyo 2.2 for N1?????
I keep getting "You're not using an Android phone" web page.
Yes I made sure my browser was in Android mode.

[Developer Request for Help] Swype OTA upgrades

Greetings XDA folks! Brian R, Swype's Community Relations Specialist here with a request for help in tracking down a potential issue that's been reported to us by several users.
We're getting reports from various sources that prediction accuracy has severely decreased after recent over-the-air updates that include a new version of Swype. We believe this is related to old user data being improperly updated for new versions of Swype.
To help us identify and correct this issue, we're looking for a few helpful users to provide us with some data off of their phones.
Am I qualified to help?
We want you're help if you meet the following criteria:
Your phone is STOCK (rooted is OK, but you must be running a STOCK ROM)
Your device comes with Swype pre-installed by default (I.E. NO BETA USERS)
You have recently (within the past 60 days) received an over-the-air upgrade that included a new version of Swype. (for example, Samsung Captivate users)
You use Swype as your primary input method. That means using it daily, for weeks at a time, to build up a long-term usage profile in your userdata
What are you looking for?
Swype is looking for ANY of the following:
The version number of Swype that was installed PRIOR to the OTA update
The version number of Swype that was installed AFTER the OTA update
A zipped copy of the /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod directory from BEFORE you received the OTA update (this one's a long shot, but it's worth asking. Perhaps someone has an old nandroid backup that has this?)
A zipped copy of the /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod directory from AFTER you received the OTA update. NOTE: You MUST NOT have used the "CLEAR DATA" option for Swype since the update! If you have, the contents of your data directory will not be helpful to us.
In the interest of full disclosure, we are obligated to make you aware that the contents of your /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod directory includes your USER DICTIONARY which may have passwords or other sensitive information in it. We give you our GUARANTEE that we will not abuse this information, but if this makes you in any way uncomfortable, please DO NOT send us your info.
In return for your help, we're offering the first 5 users to send us their data directories a free Swype t-shirt (pending confirmation that your data dir fits the criteria above). We know it's not much, but it's what we've got handy
If you are able to provide any of the above information, please either upload the files as an attachment in a reply to this thread or send an email to brian[dot]resnik[at]swypeinc[dot]com
Thank you in advance for any help the Android community is able to provide! We'd love to track this issue down and make sure it doesn't continue to effect users in the future!
P.S. In case you're wondering why we are requesting version information as well: We provide constantly updated download links to our OEM partners so they can access the latest compatible build any time they want. When they choose to download their version of Swype, and which precise version of Swype makes it onto each device with each OTA is often times not up to us, but up to the manufacturer/carrier.
Thanks again! Cheers!
I had to uninstall Swype to be able to update it (remove, then run the new installer, which installs it "fresh"), so I don't think my data directory would be useful. However, obviously, that is a problem that I had with the update.
On a side note, one issue which is driving me nuts with the new update is that words with apostrophes are difficult to use now. Words like "you're" and "don't" especially. Before, if I swyped "youre" it would add the apostrophe. Now it won't. I have added it to the custom dictionary, (at least I think, I don't know if it is built in) but no matter what, to get you're or don't, I have to actually include the apostrophe in my swipe, like y-o-u-'-r-e.
I will try to add a list of words that work (so I presume they are built in) and ones that don't. Here it is for now:
Work
--------
wasn't
didn't
won't
can't
DON'T Work
-----------
you're
don't
they're
Thanks for a great app though! Don't want you to get the wrong impression, I am very thankful to have swype!

InsertCoin ROM documentation project

Important: The docs are up. The live copy can be found on http://docs.insertcoin-roms.org/ and the Git repository on https://github.com/Manko10/InsertCoin-Docs/. For information on how to participate, see the wiki.
Hi,
This thread is related to the InsertCoin ROM by baadnewz (see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198684). Since I haven't written 10 postings yet, I can't post to that thread nor create a new one in that forum.
InsertCoin has become a quite popular ROM for the HTC Sensation. It has had 200,000 downloads yet and numbers still raise. With increasing popularity it becomes more and more difficult to get hold of information you need concerning installation, problems, modification, tweaking etc. The result is a very high number of redundant questions on the forums and confused newcomers.
The project
Thus being said, it is time to create a good and centralized knowledgebase which helps new users to dive straight into using InsertCoin, keeps the development thread cleaner and helps to push the project forward since energy can be focused more on implementing new features and fixing bugs than on answering the same questions all over again.
baadnewz attempted to launch a Wiki once, but it ceased and shut down (as well as the whole baadnewz.eu server which was the last more or less valuable resource for help outside XDA-Developers.com).
Now my idea is to create a new official InsertCoin documentation project. I talked to baadnewz and he assured it would be promoted and integrated into the official website once it comes to life. The project I'm heading for is a community-driven one. I would work for it as much as I can but I can't do it alone. I'm not experienced enough in many (especially technical areas) of InsertCoin development and Android development in general. There are many things to learn about InsertCoin. And to be honest: I also don't have the time to write all the stuff by myself. Once I had written everything, it would already be outdated. So this project is only possible if other people participate actively.
How shall the documentation be implemented?
I thought of a project hosted on GitHub. Users can fork the project, make changes and send pull requests. For infrequent submissions, we could also provide a special submission form.
A staging server would then pull the HEAD revision regularly, format it and publish it as a website.
Sounds complicated? But it isn't. Git is pretty much straightforward and also users without technical knowledge can learn it very quickly (yes, there are great graphical tools for it). And of course, the documentation would also include a noob-proof guide to contribution.
But why Git? Why not a Wiki?
A Wiki might seem to be easier, but in fact a Wiki has to be updated regularly. Patches for bugs and security holes have to be applied. Additionally, we had to fight spam. Especially when we use some well known software such as MediaWiki, spam bots would love it. That can be a lot of work.
But the main reason is portability. A Wiki is a Wiki, nothing more. Exporting the contents into other formats would be a tedious process. However, when using plain text files with a simple markup language such as Markdown, they can be exported to all formats we like. Not only can the staging server parse it to HTML, but it can also be exported to PDF, CHM files (does anybody still use these?) and many more formats.
All right, but what is to be documented?
Well, a lot. Things I have though of are
Installation
Where to get InsertCoin ROM?
Which version?
How to flash InsertCoin?
How to upgrade from previous versions?
To wipe or not to wipe (and when)?
Kernels
Which Kernels are there?
Where to get them?
What are the differences?
Advantages/disadvantages of specific Kernels
How to install a new Kernel/revert to stock?
What is a Kernel and why can't I install it via the Market? (dumb question, yes, but important to know)
Known problems
Any reported bugs still present in version X?
How do I report my own bugs?
Why does feature Y not work (and never will)?
Features
Why to choose InsertCoin?
How to submit feature requests?
Requirements
What do I need to run InsertCoin?
Which baseband version do I need?
Where do I get a new baseband version and which one to choose?
Does it work on device X, too?
Which is the oldest supported version for custom kernels?
Add-ons
Which add-ons are there?
Where to get them?
How to flash them?
What to be aware of?
How to get rid of malfunctioning add-ons?
Customization
Which themes are there?
How do I install them?
How do I revert back to the default theme?
How to set up custom boot splash and boot animation?
FAQ
Things users ask all the time
Things users might ask regularly in the future
Milestones
Any planned features for future releases?
How many ROMs to release tomorrow?
Participation
How to submit patches?
How to improve the documentation?
How to pay a round for baad?
General information
What else could be valuable information?
How do I backup and restore my data most efficiently and least time consuming for upgrades which force a full wipe?
etc.
The list goes on. It's up to us how much it'll grow. Make suggestions please. Don't hesitate!
And now you come into play!
Do you think, such a project could become a success? Do you have suggestions, ideas, criticism? Post it here. Please.
Would you like to contribute? Post an answer. You would be one of the glorious pioneers.
If I get enough positive feedback and support by people who want to contribute I will start working on the base system, set up the Git repository, write the staging software and launch the project. If not, it would have been at least worth the effort. But you would contribute and give something back to the community, wouldn't you? Sure, indeed...! ;-)
Cheers
Manko10

of course it'll succeed cause it'll be much easier with plain updated steps (n00b proof )
I would like to contribute if u may allow
THIS IS AWESOME
Of course you can contribute. Everyone is pretty much welcome to do that.
For Baad and InsertCoin itself, I think it would be a perfect success. I myself have been looking for a central resource database for InsertCoin, but always resort to just searching the thread, which is not exactly the most efficient method.
I don't know much on the technical ROM-based side of things, but I am a web developer, so I'm sure I'd be able to help in the deployment of such a website. I also happen to have a vBulletin license I'm not using. If Baad wants to expand his ideas even further and have a sort of official InsertCoin forum, all to himself, I could most definitely lend a hand for that.
I'm thinking large scale here; and upon writing this, further ideas have just popped into my head, but I'll save that for later, but hey, Baad is largely-awesome.
If you happen to have an MSN or Skype, Manko, I'd love to talk to you further
i have a better idea for talking / chatting in a more centralized way: IRC
#baadnwz-roms on freenode
I don't know much on the technical ROM-based side of things, but I am a web developer

So am I.
I'm quite sure, baad will help us as good as he can but he is of course very busy with the ROMS. So it's better to have many guys in the project who know more about the technical stuff.
I would try to help too, if You like. If You don't need IC pro's only
We need everyone (IC pros are needed, but not only).
First of all we need people who have fun writing and maintaining (!) good and understandable documentation.
Guys
if you do this - it will be bloody FANTASTIC!
noobproof guide needed badly
Make it so. Sounds like it could become a great resource.
It will, but only if enough people participate.
why not add chatbox on the coming site, isnt much better? 24/7 we can have conversation as like me, am from the philippines, and my time is different to others
Well, the documentation would also be there 24/7. I think for live talking we should better use IRC (#baadnwz-roms on irc.freenode.net). Embedded chats on websites consume a lot of bandwidth.
lol!, i guess so, yeah, maybe irc is much better. anyways, maybe i can contribute some design for future use.
Just jeep in mind that IC is also made by baadnewz for the Desire (and the wildfire too?). I'd like to write some things for the Desire version of IC.

STAPPZ- What's live near you - location based app - early cm adopters needed

Hi,
I'm Tim and we developed an Android app and started a startup in Germany. However, the app is free. Therefore, I hope that posting about the app in this forum to search cyanogenmod users is ok. If not, please delete this post.
I post here, because I, myself, love cynongenmod custom roms and would like to find out more about the compatibility of our app. Therefore, I search people that like to try new apps that report if it works from them. The app is location based and in beta (so not perfect yet) and for my cm10.1 on an Lg P990 and cm on a Galaxy S3 it works. I'd be curious about other phones. Therefore, I thought this forum here is the best place to find like minded people that use cm - Maybe even someone has the onplus one and can test it
We have the app for beta testers open and you can get it on our page STAPPZ com or find us on facebook (STAPPZ)
OK- now i talked so much about what we would like to test - here a brief description:
What is STAPPZ? In short, it is answer to the question: “What is live near me?”
With STAPPZ you participate in an open conversation with pictures and text at your current position. You create and perpetuate your own STAPPZ: Moments, noteworthy facts or any other information that you consider relevant.Nearby fellows (other STAPPZ users) see those STAPPZ and respond to them by posting something themselves or by saving them in their profile. This way, the people joining STAPPZ enrich and weave the world, collaborate and take advantage of the knowledge that others left around them.
However, if you like the app and have some feedback in other directions or you want more info or to blog about it, please let us know.
We'd be so glad to get feedback if it runs on your cm devices.
Kind regards
Tim
