Is it possible to install another Codec for the Camcorder - G1 Android Development

Hey.
I`m annoyed from the audio quality when i record a video..
im running a 32B magic and i would like to record with higher audio quality,
so is there a way to change the audiodriver from amr to aac or something like that?
thank you

i was wondering the same thing myself the other day. not sure this is in the right forum tho

Very good idea... I would suggest that you put a [REQUEST] tag on the thread title rather than in the current state it is in... I am very sure many are not bothering to read it since it sounds more like a question, and hence the contempt of most ppl in this forum for questions to be in dev section. Just my 2 cents.
But I love the idea of a better codec, especially since now we have access to an overclocked CPU to help with the encoding.

I second this. add the request tag

Your CPU is FAR too weak to encode video on the fly. Video encoding is by HARDWARE ENCODER. As a result, you can do no such thing.

what about the audio though? I really wish there was a way to improve audio quality of the camcorder..

Your main audio quality problem is caused by the microphone. You simply can't get decent audio quality with a tiny little garbage microphone. The audio encoding used really won't make much of a difference in overall quality.

Nothing worth getting last time I looked/heard... 2.2 is supposed to have vastly improved audio abilities that will make it possible to do this much easier and better than is currently supported.

cool thnx any idea when 2.2 comes out? when I update to 2.2 will it do anything to my device if it's unlocked or rooted?
I found this even though it costs 30 dollars which I would never personally buy, but maybe someone reading this might.

What sort of improved audio abilities?
@OP - The Nexus One just has bad bass control, I don't think EQing is going to help it much I'm afraid.
"astro player beta" has an equalizer

[MOD] 480x320 Recording for CM6 ROMs

This is a cross post from my mau5 ROM thread, but I think other people might enjoy it too.
I've put together an update.zip that allows for 480x320 recording via camcorder. Currently, our device only allows 352x288(high quality), this simple hack just allows a greater resolution and I think a clearer picture IMO.
I've set 352x288 as the default "low" quality and 480x320 as the default "high" res recording so that you do have a choice whenever you want. I've also changed the file format to mp4 instead of 3gp since well.. no one uses 3gp for anything.
There are few drawbacks though. 480x320 is the last somewhat "stable" res where the OMX core won't **** bricks all over the place so be weary of any force closes. Also, gralloc likes to crap out when switching resolutions on the fly along with being unable to view the 480x320 video in the gallery app (since we have such bad gfx power).
I do plan on making this STABLE at one point, but it'll require kanging some memory for gralloc to use while changing resolution.
You can check for yourself on the differences with a 352x288 recording and a 480x320 recording
(low light vs direct light)
You can see an example of a video I shot last night at a xmas party HERE to see 480x320 when it comes to more 'motion' recording. (Warning: White people dancing)

I've always been messing around with it. The proprietary blobs just get in the way a lot and you end up at a dead end with no resources. :/

Not sure. Nandroid and find out
Why is the video quality in the CM/AOSP ROMS so bad? I know you said the 480x320 is better, but looking at both of your vides, while hte content was not fun (white people dancing never is) the quality is just unwatchable.
Just curious because on the HTC ROMs it is at least somewhat decent.
Not crapping on what you're doing here Dec, but just trying to understand what you're dealing with.

I get bored. You can only push the framerate so high on either quality, and the hero itself has never had that good of recording capabilities.
The htc roms are 'decent' looking because their encoding is handled better and optimized for the proprietary omx libraries which we have no source too

I was going to mention the video recording quality not more than two days ago and was messing around with the app a little here and there, but no need for that now
Thanks again Deca
Does the now low quality 352x288 save as mp4 as well?

Hay decad I'm on asop and flash this the only thing I see so far is that after taking video it fc no big deal. When I got to video info it shows mpg4 for mat like it should. I think. If I go to video setting it show some thing different and can't change it. So it works for the most important part the video. Zoom works too

Beats by DRE or what else I found on the portal

Well I am in the mood/ a mission to just royally mess up my phone today and luckily the portal is chock full of suggestions and mods to help me do just that.
The first I found was the GPS fix from earlier and now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523760
Beats by DRE for all Gingerbread roms.
I went through it a bit and it didnt seem like it was gonna mess with anything (mostly different files) so I went ahead and flashed it.
Everything is working fine and there doesnt seem to be any conflicts with Voodoo Sound. Does it improve the audio? I guess I am not enough of an audiofile to really know...
Just wanted to say that it seems safe to flash and throw it out as an option
Just to help people understand what Beats is (from what I know). It is more or less an audio filter that changes how the audio is processed coming from the device. It also changes the EQ curve some to accentuate the lower frequencies and then gives you a "distorted" output.
How can you tell if it installed correctly? is there any settings? Thanks.
As far as I can tell there no settings, and they are just under the hood enhancements.

it may have to do with the quality of the audio card in the charge. I felt like i noticed more of a difference when I flashed this on my kindle fire than I did on my charge.

That was my whole point... A device that renders sound exceptionally well is going to benefit less from minor software tweaks than one with a ****ty card that plays poorly out of the box.
Just because someone says "build quality" doesn't mean that they mean "bad build quality".
I think Beats sounds like crap anyway. It overemphasizes the bass and muddies up the mids. It's really intended for bass heavy music and doesn't really work well for anything else, IMO.
Beats... Audiophiles? Thanks for making me laugh this morning.

Headphone Amp Software

I love the Voodoo headphone amp as it boosts the headphone output to a decent level, but installing voodoo sounds has its problems on ICS with calls, etc and all the know bugs. Is there a headphone amp app or widget or something? Best I've found is to make a preset EQ with everything boosted but this affects sound more than Supercurio's work on the Wolfman chip and enabling the headphone boosts.
Jetaudio is the player I've been using on my other phone. Get it from play store. Once you have it go to EQ and look at the top. There is a built in preamp. Slide the bar to 10 and watch your ears bleed. It is by far the best free player that I've used.

Actually thank eollie. I'm pretty sure he's the one that let me know about it. Well it was either him or Lumin. Hard to tell the other members of TFTN apart anymore. lol
I'll give Jet a try myself.
Not to hijack, if anyone knows of dev info on compiling new codecs for Android, would you PM me? The lack of Apple lossless keeps me from using my phone for music.

Can you really tell the difference between lossless and compressed? I've tried with some really good earbuds and it's super hard for me to tell. Try talking some albums that you know really well and converting them to mp3 at 224. If you can tell the difference from the phone I'd be amazed.

Yeah, I use Grado cans and anything below 512 kbps is like nails on a chalkboard to me. My library is all Apple lossless at this point and transcoding on the fly is a complexity I'd rather not deal with.
Edit -- Switching to IEMs has made anything compressed even at 512 kbps rather painful. As full-rate Apple Lossless or Flac is typically around 800-1000 kbps, at least for me, there isn't any meaningful gain for the pain.
jetAudio does support Apple Lossless now, and doesn't have the gaps between tracks that used to plague older Android players. It's got it's own usability issues, but it does a decent job.
Now if I can figure out why Voodoo Sound occasionally stops working for me to control amp gain so I can keep the digital gain maxed out.

Since I stopped using my 4g as a phone and just use it as a music player voodoo sounds has worked all the time every time. I think receiving phone calls might be what is causing it to stop working. I few others have reported the same. Something to take a look at at least. If your using jet it has it's own built in pre amp that works well.
I think that maxed out issue you are talking about is a setting in voodoo app causes the db keep going up

I seem to be finding that either placing or receiving a call "disconnects" Voodoo Sound from the analog gain.
The preamp control in jetAudio is a little different -- Voodoo has the benefit of keeping the digital gain as high as possible and just using the audio gain, which should improve sound quality by keeping digitization noise lower.
I have logs for that i go on wheresmycellphone.com and call my phone run logocat right before the call. No one has provided logs yet ? There seems to be dual speaker mode thats changed and an audio route problem. Do u want me to up logs. Does voodoo work on any of ics roms with just dsp manager and how do u tell if it is working really. I think the tv out driver plays a slight role as well there is bluetooth sharing enabled during call when headset not being used or anything.

I bet you still listen to vinyl don't you. LOL I see your point for sure but on my earbuds I can't tell the difference. As long as it's loud and clear and loud it's good enough for me.
I do. And on audiophile the dsp manager says does not work with hardware on last tab to the right

Porting Beats Audio, xLoud and Bravia Engine for Atrix 2?

Hi,
Some people have ported Beats Audio, xLoud and Mobile Bravia Engine to several of the android phones.
Is it possible to port it to Atrix 2?
Will it really increase the performance?
There are several methods available online..
(A simple google search will show the results... I am not able to post the links as i am a new member)
Have anyone tried it??
Any senior members willing to try this?
-----------------------
P.S:- This is not a Q&A post.. This is meant for discussion of a general topic.

I have installed Beats Audio and it works fine, yes it does increase audio performance. To install Beats Audio you need to root your phone.
I haven't tried xloud and bravia, so I cant comment on that.

For the love of everything even remotely good in life, do not do this. Beats audio and really any other mod are TERRIBLE and degrade audio quality. if what you want is something that drives the base hard and washes everything else out, I suppose it does a damn good job, but it kills audio quality. If you want good performance, buy some decent headphones, nothing less than $100 or so, but you don't need anything crazy, and get a good player with an equalizer like poweramp.

I have never used it, but obviously none of these can change the hardware of the phone, they are basically fancy equalizers. All equipment is different, and that is the main point to equalizers (not to adjust sound for the type of music, the recordings are mixed how the producer intended, but to adjust for different listening hardware. for example, small headphones often need more bass volume to sound good, while large speakers might lack on the low to mid end.) That said, some of these enhancements might improve quality on the device they are intended for, as they can change what is needed to get good sound there.
You can try any of these, and see what you think, as everyone has different tastes, but to get the best quality sound, I would still recommend high quality listening gear, and a good equalizer you can play with to get the sound you want.
I mostly listen with ER6i in ear headphones, which are noise isolating (not electronic canceling), so they block a lot of sound, and have really good quality for in ear headphones. They don't make the same ones any more, but they were around $100, so I'm sure there is a replacement model. I use Poweramp as my player, and it has a 10 band EQ that I tweaked for my headphones to sound best.
Well i have installed all of these and my audio is better..performance is better. From my point of view..it doesnt hurt anything.

Shame on you! Difference of opinion I guess, but my guess is it is still the same as the tv store effect. the brighter the better seeming at fist glance.
Anyways, always feel free to try things out, but make sure you know how to remove them. I made a beats remover that is in the general section somewhere, but they might have updated since then, so no guaranty that it will work.
Beats audio thing was just a screw up. It made the audio quality bad for me. I tried Acid audio engine which worked fine. It did boost the audio quality for me a lil bit !
