Impossible hack? I don't think so. - General Topics

The following is a copy of a posting I made on the AT&T forum. This may be outside of the purview of this site. However, I expect there may be a number of readers who have some insight on this:
On Monday morning, April 19, I had a wireless conversation with a friend. We made plans to do a little jamming on guitars. At 11:25 AM that same day, he received a text canceling the plans. The text carried the identity marker of my name and wireless number. The text was specific to our prior conversation. I did not send that text. The phone was with me, and I was alone in my house.
I checked my account on line and the record does reflect me sending a text to my friend at the stated time. I called ATT and was handled with courtesy, but was told that this was impossible, due to the SIM card being specific to my phone. I did not send that text. My phone has no record of sending that text.
Either I had a fugue moment, sent the text, erased the record in my outbox, all the while warming up on guitar and looking forward to the jam, or the technologically impossible happened! I think I am in my right mind. Someone listened to our conversation, texted a corresponding message to my friend, cancelled our plans, and did it all in my name and through my account! Fortunately, it was not overtly harmful. But what if. . . . . . .?
Has this happened to anyone else? Can anyone give me a real explanation instead of ATT denial?
By the way, I don't blame the ATT rep. I spoke with. I'm sure she was limited in what she was able to field, and told me what she understood to be true. And it may be that ATT doesn't yet have a handle on this. I do hope they are looking into it. I doubt if I am the only one with this complaint.

So you did see the text message on his phone? or are you going simply by his word?

No, I didn't see the message. I trust him, and I did see my account record which reflected a text to him at the said time; a text I didn't send.
I wondered about a virus. I use the phone's extra features for a PIM rather than internet stuff. I don't have an internet contract. I tried Kapersky's WM program, but wasn't able to keep an on-line connection (wi-fi) to activate it. All software going though my PC (subsequently the phone) is actively scanned with updated virus profiles.

My wife was at work. She doesn't text. My phone was in my possession.
I believe this to be a hack from a stranger just messing around.

Fake calls Software for PPC

Hello,
I've been looking and searching for a software that does the same as "call jockey" does for the wm smartphone. That is we can schedule fake calls in order to get away from unwanted situations.
Can one of the guru's develop such a softwarebcs I've looked everywhere and don't think it exists.
Thnaks
Xtp
Does it actually make a call, or just play a ringtone?
yea, why not just set up an alarm with ur ringtone, and pretend to talk or something.
I remember reading about a web site that would take your phone number and you could schedule calls in advance. it would actually play one side of a conversation that you could participate in (if you felt so inclined).
No clue what the url is, but it's out there somewhere! If someone came up with it, you could use your browser and do what you want without having to install a new program.

Is there a way, or someone that wants to do this mod?!!!!! Notification Sound in Call

One thing I have wanted on this phone since I got it is to be able to know when a text message or other notification comes through while in a call. Like a short beep or something similar to the sound the G1 makes when the battery is low. I am not a huge coder, but love toying around with my rooted G1. Any takers? Anyone want to do this? Anyone else been wanting this??? Thanks for all who view this thread.
I think Handcent sms has this feature but we are still missing gmail and other notifications
Maybe someone can get this done, this is one of the few things that has bothered me about my g1 since I got it.
I know this isn't the place to ask, but a way to have the keyboard along with the face buttons stay lit until the keys lock would be the best thing. It's annoying to move the trackball every time to just get those buttons to light up every time.
Unless there is a way and I've just missed it every time.

Obviously you people aren't READING THE WHOLE THREAD.
We are aware that Handcent covers SMS/MMS notifications in voice calls, but what about gtalk, gmail, facebook, MSN, ect.
As far as I can gather, Handcent DOESN'T do this.
The OP is asking for someone to see if it's possible to modify the Phone.apk to include this. All of you "Members" and "Senior Members" need to get off your high horses, if you're true senior members (likely not the case as most of your post counts probably come from slamming people who "DO EVERYTHING WRONG!!!") remember the days when the Android section of this forum was still relatively young, everybody helped everybody, regardless of how unusual or stupid their questions seemed. These days if you're not 100% perfect in your initial post, you get slammed. Leading to more completely useless posts from all of you "Senior Members" that are taking up EVEN MORE space with useless drivel that's EVEN MORE useless than the OP.
I personally think this is a great idea, and whole heartedly support it, if I had the slightest idea how this is done, I would be on it right away.
Also, before anybody slams me for being wrong, I have never used Handcent for my SMS handler because I prefer the modified one that comes with my CM build, but if it DOES allow notifications for ALL APPS through calls, it could have saved a great deal of time to mention that.
This gets my support as well. I dont like Handcent. So if we can make it work with the standard APK, it will be awesome. I have asked around, for it to work, its not the Phone.apk that needs to be modified, its the .apk that giving out the notification that has to be modified. example is
for sms/mms, the mms.apk needs to be modified to check the phone status, and give out the correct sound notification. (not in call, use selected sound clip from external speakers; in call, use small beep sound in the ear speaker.)
same goes for gtalk, gmail, twidroid and any other apps that have notification.

Good to see some serious input here finally, depressing to know it would have to be handled by the corresponding application, being as some of them are off limits (gtalk/gmail/ect).
At least someone still has their head on straight here.

I'm sorry. I usually post something constructive, but this kind of crap makes me mad.
Why does it bother you that he had more than one question? How can you even complain about that? Uh oh, I just used 2, I probably have a "metal disorder" too, huh? You know what people accomplish by asking questions? They learn things. Yes sir, it is people like YOU, who don't ask questions or even make the slightest attempt to educate themselves, who shouldn't be "allowed to breed." When people like you breed, we get thick skulled smart-asses who think they're tough on the internet.
P.S. You used 7 extra periods that weren't needed. Your first sentence was a fragment. You used one capital letter. You used the wrong form of it's the first time. You used the wrong form of you're. You forgot a period after retard. It's supposed to be "mental" disorders. You used an ellipses incorrectly. You used "where" instead of "were."
P.P.S. His sentence wasn't even a fragment (I'm assuming you mean't "typed" instead of "type"). "I'm an idiot," says Mr. Grammer and Punctuation. There you go. Stop trying to be a hero for the board, that is the mods job. You saying "OMG RONG [email protected][email protected]!!" isn't helping a thing, considering 90% of people who post in the wrong thread just post one time. Especially when there are people before you that have pointed this out. I know it gives you an ego boost, but seriously, keep it in your pants. You are the one filling xda with garbage, not the people who have a question about a feature they would like to see implemented on their phone.
Thanks for bearing with me, everyone else.
Stefan, find something better to do than insult people in a forum. Next time you see something in the wrong place and someone has acknowledged it, I dare you to just skip over it.
I was going to delete this as well but it makes my point so much easier to make and its not a flame post or very hostile.

Obviously, you're not reading the whole thread, bro. We are putting suggestions out. So what if we miss two words? You're complaining about something that's not happening. We're still TRYING to help.
But, back on topic. Now that I know this, I support. Would be quite useful, as I have it set so apps get killed on screen off and it seems everytime I press "End" on a call, it goes blank and only thing that keeps me knowing I even have a sms is "Sms unread count" widget.

I do sometimes, especially when coordinating stuff with a few people. It will be something like talking to someone, then getting a text to update me on information to relay to the person I am talking to. Stuff like that.
Other times its just an compulsive need to reply text as soon as it comes in.
Also, another reason why you need to know if a text comes in while in a call : having 2 girlfriend. (not that I have 2 anyway)

I have the TTSnotifier app and it will announce the callers name, if they are in my contacts, from call waiting. I also have it set to notify me of incoming texts as well. Doesn't work with email though. You will need the text to speech app from the market for it to work. You can customize the announcements. Hope maybe this will help. Can't remember where I got it from but I can e-mail it to you. [email protected]

Just emailed you.... I don't care if I don't get my texts or email but the absence of "call waiting" notification has been driving me nuts... to the point of really thinking of getting rid of G1. I mean, this is so basic, we shouldn't have to find workarounds just to enable this. If that app does that... it would be like a gift from heaven.

Tmobile voice plus beta rom

Hello everyone,
I currently have the latest rom from cyanogen and was wondering if someone could hack this Voice plus beta rom(I just received from TMOBILE). So we can all use the new features on a rooted G1,Mytouch!
yea, I'm dying to test this too but am afraid will lose root... any solution?!?
It's just better call quality which is achieved by flashing that new radio from the DM blah blah that Tmo released.Don't bother with unrooting it's still 1.6 not 2 point anything.

No dude not that update!
Here are the new features with this:
T-Mobile Voice Plus Beta Features:
* Call Divert: Carve out a little peace and quiet by sending selected numbers straight to voicemail without ringing your phone.
* Call Defer: Let callers know you’re busy and schedule a convenient time for you to call them back. Send them a text message that acknowledges their call and that you will respond at a later time.
* Visual Voicemail: Easily manage your voicemail! View a list of who left a voicemail, with the time of the message and its length. Choose which to listen to now and which to review later.
* City ID: Get more information about the calls you receive. The city and state information of incoming calls is displayed.
Yes you WILL lose root. Here is the file if anyone wants to try to un-nbh it, having problems with un-nbh'ing it myself, but maybe you'll have better luck.

I awlays thought that it was crappy of the G1 that I couldnt see who left the voicemail only the damn icon. Made me almost wish I had my bb storm back
All of these features have already been done. I mean, send calls directly to voicemail? There's an option for that in stock Android...
Call defer might be new. haven't seen an app that does it.
Visual Voicemail has been a T-Mo app in the market for over a year.
City ID has been an app in the market since a month after launch.
I think that you can extract .nbh files, but I can't figure out how.

I mean come on how MANY voicemails do you actually get? i get maybe 2-4 a month if that!
Just wait a bit enom will more than likely release this, as he does with all the OTA updates and Official Carrier ROMs. Its common sense you will LOOSE ROOT if you install. Everytime a new ROM or update appears, I keep seeing the same question. It isnt worth loosing ROOT over, just to see what city someone is calling? Come on its good news, but thats all it is
I joined the beta test team.
I joined, but I don't wanna flash it. They combined the Tmo OTA with the app downloader for the beta plus apps. i wish they had just put out the app. i've got the NBH file ripped out with a program called psas. but now the files are .nb files. I have SDK installed, but really have no idea what I'm doing. just need to open the system.nb file I guess..
Help??
Yeah...and then on top of the fact that it wasn't just an app like was suggested when we signed up for the beta, the beta release actually has a bug where you can't install the maps update...I mean really, why wouldn't you make the ROM with the latest software installed already for your testers...It can't be to difficult, the Chefs here do it in their spare time for free.
can anyone make a .zip of this..?? i only want the features... not to lose root

probably rename to .img and unyaffs.
I just flashed it. Its kinda nice actually. When you get a phone call 3 buttons popup answer defer and voicemail. I tried the defer button and you can do a one touch text like call back later or in a meeting. Witch is good for driving I guess (I text and drive anyway) visual. Voice mail is adder as an extra tab in contacts menu way better then the visual voice mail alp in the market. Wonder if I will get over the air updates with this build? Clashing the nbh was strange also seemed to have an extra step then a normal nbh found here for rc29 or atleast mine did it twice? Other then that its stock. Wish it was 2.1

Sorry for the spelling guys I'm on my phone......
gOSH, i want this.. come on devs! rock this! show this t-mo bastards who the bosses are (the customers), lol!
i would love the visual voicemail app... we dont have anything like that in canada yet (except iphone) .. might have to grab this rom and play with it once i get home..

intercept text messages? or sniff packets sent by phones?

Is there a app that sniff packets sent by cell phones, my whole goal would be to intercept text messages or the data thats sent by cell phones. I came up with this idea when I was messing around with packet sniffer and thought about the idea but on cell phones. Is there something already out like this?
Wireshark at a "router"
While not an on-device solution, I use this setup when I want to watch the traffic between my phone and the network:
"sorry, apparently I can't post a link to this forum, it's at my site droidhacks.com, click on the wireshark tag in the sidebar and you'll find the post"
Having a full Wireshark install running on the desktop is great for poking through the data. I think some folks do the capture on the device and then just move the capture file across. Also helps sometimes to pull the SIM to make sure all the traffic goes through the laptop and not through the network. Sharing on OS X with an handset can be a bit fidgety when first starting up.
Find shark for android and sharkreader. Both of which can be found in this forum.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
can this be countermanded? stoped, disabled somehow? encrypted packets? someone's safety could be at risk.
Are you looking to capture the communications of other phones, rather than your own? If so, good luck, it's encrypted traffic.
Sounds pretty stupid and no, it is not possible. I would rather want a network sniffer for android. Connect to your local coffee shop network and start sniffing.

no, i'm just curious how this can be done.
if its encrypted how can you read the packets with your program then ?
some kind of id or serial number?

Ok, I think we need a rather large dose of reality here. You'll not manage it, simple as that, certainly not from a consumer device. I suspect you are thinking along the line of WiFi wireless, where you can monitor what other devices are sending. If you really wish to know more then google 'usrp' and you'll soon see you'll need far more hardware and software to start capturing GSM traffic.
ok so you're saying with my router i can't capture my text messages, like those sent and received with the YMesenger app ?
so its possible to sniff datalines?

Nice info.
Packet sniffing over public wifi is well known, but I learnt something new today
Chris Paget hapens to be a personal friend of mine
I'm pretty sure intercepting phone calls would still be "illegal", regardless of the fact that you're a network security specialist.
But yes, nothing is impossible, that's pretty much a given. Give someone enough expertise and resources, anything can be hacked. Encryption is actually important, so the general, uninformed riff-raff can't access anything they want. Like my previous statement, it can still be hacked, but it's better that not being encrypted at all.

So, my ex husband is using a packet sniffer to read all of my info that I txt over my phone. He is living with me until he closes on his new house (30 days out). I have installed a VPN on my phone. What else do I need to do? He says he can see all messages that I send, both txt and messenger as well as my calls?? He is a programmer, so I know he knows what he’s doing, how can I get my privacy back? I’m afraid that he will always be spying on me and it’s very frustrating.

Do you use Google Messages app for text messages? If so check if it is connected to Messages for web. Also if you use Whatsapp check if it is connected to Whatsapp web. I recommend to change password for all the services, Google, Facebook and so on and reset the phone to factory defaults. I don't think this has anything to do with packet sniffing.

Google Voice 0.3.0 Galaxy S3 ICS 4.0.4

**UPDATE** I MADE IT WORK
Hey, I'm not sure if there is an answer to this...
I just got my GS3 and love it! However, Google Voice 0.3.0 (ya'll know why I love it) crashes on the ICS 4.0.4 platform. I have been using
Voice+ but I just don't like the call back feature. I have also found a smart gv dialer that automatically decides between gv and the cell carrier based upon certain rules but it still takes a while to complete the calling card style dial through.
YES, I WANT MY CAKE AND TO EAT IT TOO!!! or in this case my ice cream sandwich I know with the unlimited plans floating around most people don't care anymore. I have an OLD OLD OLD plan that is grandfathered in with unlimited data so I don't want to give it up.
My question is, does anyone know of a fix for the app crash that worked fine in 2.2. Or has anyone "recompiled" the app to work in ICS?
Thanks for any help...
THE ANSWER!!!
UPDATE:
Yay! I know it doesn't seem like much for some but those of us still using our trusty f&f plans this is big.
I hope this helps someone out there who found that the old GV 0.3.0 app would hang up and crash as soon as you touched next on the new ICS 4.0.4.
If you want to have the old GV 0.3.0 on ICS 4.0.4, follow these steps:
1. Install newest version of GV from play store.
2. Open GV and touch next but do not choose the displayed gmail account touch USE A DIFFERENT ACCOUNT (this is the only way to get this
to work!)
3. Type in your Gmail address and your password (I know it is the same one that was displayed on the previous page... THIS IS THE ONLY
WAY TO GET IT TO WORK!) Touch sign in.
4. Choose how you want GV to dial and whether or not you want to set up the GV Voicemail.
5. Now, download the old GV 0.3.0 apk here: http://www.freewarelovers.com/androi...oice_0.3.0.apk
Thank you www.freewarelovers.com!!
6. Make sure Install from Unknow Sources is selected under the security tab in your settings menu.
7. Open the Google_Voice_0.3.0.apk file (Look in your apps and touch Downloads to get to the downloaded files)
8. You will get a message that you are replacing an application and that all previous user data will be saved. Touch OK.
9. Touch Install.
Now you should have a working GV 0.3.0 apk that will allow you to call through GV utilizing only one access number place this number in your F&F list and make outgoing calls for free!
*Disclaimer - Although this works you may want to review your TOS to see if this violates your carriers terms for Friends and Family numbers.
If this helped you please show my thanks meter some love!

Gv works fine for me. Are you still stock or on a custom rom? Fresh gv download from play?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
GV works for me as well, I only use it for voicemails but I haven't had any odd issues. Btw, why are you on an older version? The app hasn't been updated since March but it's on build 0.4.2.54. I definitely suggest using the above users' suggestions.

The reason for gv 0.3.0 is because this is the last version that does not use direct access numbers. It only uses one number for direct dialing out. Which means I can assign the one number to my f&f list.

yes, i asked this some time ago. but your reasoning for liking version 0.3.0 is moot. theres ways to get it working like you want on the latest version.
Yay, I figured it out!
Check my very first post in this thread for the answer!
I decided that was the best place to move the info to keep it from being buried.
Thank you!

I know it is fairly moot, I said almost the same thing in my original post. However, some of us don't like change. Also, I only have 500 minutes for my wife and I to share (makes our plan really cheap) but we do have F&F numbers. Generally the callback dialers don't put the outgoing number in the history and it takes 5 seconds or so to connect to the outgoing call (also fairly moot for the use of free calling).

Oh im sorry I think you misunderstood what I meant. The way you describe above didnt work for me, I still got force closed when launching GV after installing the older version. You can search here and see the thread regarding that.
What I meant was, there is a simple way to use the new version of google voice that allows for dialing one number only so that your friends and family list can have that one number in it still. I like the look of the new version personally, I would like a black themed one though so I may look for that later.
A side note, the new plans include unlimited voice anyways so it only really matters if you arent on one of the new plans.

First, what is your problem? Did you not read my posts or just like to come and insert your conjecture wherever you can? I stated I have a CHEAP plan with only 500 minutes. I pay $89/mo for two smartphones with unlimited data, TRY TO BEAT THAT PRICE!
Second, if you merely select the gmail account linked to your phone on the first set-up screen then it wont work. You must use the "use a different account option." Then yes, you manually type in the same gmail address that is more than likely the gmail address you use to link your android phone to google. This is the way that the old google voice app stores your user data and will allow the old gv app to work. Plus, there is no way to make the new gv app stop dialing direct access numbers.
Feel free to offer the way you "know" it can only dial one access number and I would be more than happy to try the new gv app.
UPDATE: Furthermore I have looked at all of your posts concerning this issue and you have not offered a single solution towards the problem nor explained work arounds you tried or how they failed or worked.

you are being way to hostile. I AM IN THE SAME BOAT AS YOU, I have 1400 minutes with a family plan. I am however fortunately on unlimited data. So I dont know what you mean by "insert your conjecture". I will beat it because I pay $150 for 5 lines and have unlimited data on at least 2 of the lines. So I understand the value of friends and family lists.
The "Second , if you merely select... " way doesnt work in all/most cases. I have discussed this in another thread that I had locked because there was no interest in this. The way I came up with works consistently.
I wasnt being confrontational to you, I even apologized that you misunderstood what I was saying. I will say it again too, sorry if what I was saying came across differently then what I said. I have tried your way on multiple phones repeatedly and kept getting force close. That is how I figured this other way that actually works on the new version of the app.
Still no help

Still you offer no solution... prove that you know how!
Or are you still "gauging demand?"

no thanks, for someone being so hostile why would anyone want to share with you. you could of searched and easily seen the post I made a month ago about this and that it works but instead you rack up 7 posts boasting something new and being a jerk, as if no one else has ever thought of this. Theres other users that have pm'd me and I've helped them get this working properly on the new app version.
Right on for getting it to work because thats the goal really. But when you see that it doesnt work on all google voice accounts, you might want to rethink your responses.
p.s. good job searching after posting. No I am not gauging demand, I've helped people in pm because of WHY google voice calls a different out number each time normally.

I actually came to this conclusion as I started to reply the last time and have simply ignored him. My apologies. I am new to forum posting and had no idea what was really out there. I was just surprised and allowed my competitive spirit to get the better of me. I just have a hard time understanding why people make uneducated statements off of half reading a post. There will be no more exchanges between me and him.

Sorry kennyglass, not trolling at all. In fact, I took a second to think about the google voice app functionality and this thread. There is a reason Google changed the app from the old version to new version and why it dials random multiple numbers. So, posting in public how to circumvent that might not be the best idea, especially if we want it to continue to function with one number dialing.
You can look that there is no less then 3 threads related to this subject that I posted over the past couple months.
1. How to check compatibility with older version of google voice app to ICS and the SGS3
2. How google voice apps functions and why one gv account dials a single number while others dial multiple numbers (when setup the same with the same versions of apps)
3. How to get it working and the interest of others wanting to know how to do it with the newest version of the app.
You just have to search before starting a new thread.
This isnt where I just saw a random thread in General and said lets mess with the guy, NO, in fact this has been a couple months in the making where I tested, asked questions, tested more, then figured out how to do it. As I said before, it might not be the best idea to post how to do it on the newest version of the app where it works on every gv account (not just some). I have helped many others already on how to do it privately as I am not sure I want google to discover this and stop it. Surely you know that google did this at the pressure of the Cellular providers?
The kind, not so negative people that want help have figured out that they can simply pm me and I'll help. Also, I wasnt flaming, trolling, nor was I even negative. I complimented the OP for figuring out a way that works for him. I even apologized TWICE for any misunderstanding, but I didnt feel to much like sharing publicly after being told what is your problem or to prove it... would you?
maybe people shouldnt read 'tone' on the internet, reading doesnt always translate to tone well..........
and to note the half read posts comment, it is hard to reply to a post that is edited over and over, hence the ORIGINAL quote, to inform the reader what was being commented on.
Thanks for the PM tillithz. The process was simple and easy and it works.
Since, I came up with a way that works 100% of the time without using an OLD version and I am happily helping others get it working as well, I will link to the ORIGINAL thread so that I dont ruffle any feathers here. You can either use the OP'ers method with the old version of the app or visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31936430#post31936430 for a current method. enjoy!
Trying to use a different google account, and then using my same name and password didn't work. It said that user already existed. So I was forced to sign in using my main google account. Went through the rest of the steps and everything appears to work, I was able to install GV 0.3 and open it up. Although it doesn't appear to actually function. It won't download my new messages, for instance. Any help?
I was able to make this trick work by installing google voice version 0.4.2.54 along with google voice version 0.3.0. Thanks for the great trick! Its very usefulx for those of us on a legacy plan.
