Display another number when sending sms - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I have a twin simcard solution, and it works nice, but with one annoying thing. When i'm sending SMS from my twin card, the receiver doesn't see my number, just the twin cards number. Kinda frustrating... Is there any Android app that lets you specify witch number should be displayed on the receivers phone, so that I could chose my real number?

What kind of handset do you have? It might be something in the hardware not correctly supported by Android.
The only solution I can think of is to SMS via a Google Voice number with the Voice application.
There are call faker apps, but nothing for SMS.

I hope there is no way to do what you want. If there was you could send texts from ANY number. That would be a pretty big security hole.

Call forwarding from landline to XDA

I need to forward a land line rom my home to my XDA1 occasionally. It is a standard PSTN line.
On my Nokia the calling number comes up as number>, indicating a forwarded call, and on Motorolla the calling number comes up as forwarded call - number
Onthe XDA there is no indication that the number is dialing the XDA direct or dilaing the landline number and being forwarded.
Is there a fix, or a way of indicating a forwarded call?
Thanks. BB
MAN! you should ask your local landline phone company to enable "call forwarding" feature!
it is nothing about your XDA!
cgigate, i think you totally misunderstood the poster. if you ever used the call forwarding feature, you would notice on most normal mobile phone, the would be indictaors like ">", "->", "Call Divereted" displayed before the incoming number, so that you would know that a call that comes into your mobile phone was in fact a forwarded / transfered call (from another landline or mobile).
i have the same problem as well. it seems like this is a Phone Edition feature (or lack of feature), it doesn't support showing the call origin indicator. or maybe the Microsoft developers have just discarded this and therefore never bothered to programme to display them.
it's really a hassle as I now have no way to tell if a call was made to my mobile, OR a call was made to my office but transfered to my mobile.

Yes, I misunderstood it.
I'm using call forwarding every day.
"Call Divereted" displayed before the incoming number, actually it is very hard to notice , even it is Nokia/SE/Mot phone.
it's mobile phone dependent feature actually.
My last Siemens phone display a small arrow in front of the number like -> , and the little arrow stayed there as long as it's ringing, but disappeared when you look at the call register later.
I'm hoping somewhere along the line, maybe developers of Caller ID alike could pick this up and add to the feature.

XDA always missing some good features as a phone
Anyone has any suggestion?
There is no solution yet.
Not solution yet?
Now we have Wm2k3SE. Is there any solution for bbourke's problem.
I do really miss this feature, because I use dual sim adapter and sometimes call goes to "inactive" SIM and is forwarded to active SIM...
does anyone know how to discover calls comming from forwarded lines?

Any way to block/screen callers?

I am coming from a Dx and a DX2, wherein I could "block" or "screen" callers (i.e. send them directly to voicemail by selecting a setting in contacts).
Any way to do this on the charge? I don't see the option in contacts.

No, not ATM.. Once we get AOSP we will be able to do that with cytown Phone and wycontacts, which is included with CM... Which also happens to be the apps that I ported to GummyJAR / Liberty on the DX, which gave you those options
Other than that the only way I am aware of is hand out your google voice number and block callers from within the Gvoice app.
You can also download an app called blacklist that might do what you need
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
You could call Verizon and have them block a number. It won't send them to voicemail though, it'll seem like your number's been disconnected to them.
I use Extreme Call Blocker Droid from the Market. Works great.

Try root call blocker or Mr number both free from the market.
Typed with my thumbs via XDA premium app
I use the free app Call Control. Probably does the same thing as the ones recommended above.

Google Voice
You could use Google Voice. Set it up as your Voice mail. When set up it transfers all calls to your Google Voice but still rings through your regular number. I set up a Spam/Block contact. Once i Add the number to it, i have it set to block call.
Works great for me

[Q] Texting from a tablet?

So, my dad uses a Droid X2. However, he's been considering ditching his phone for a 7" 3g/4g tablet, and using it as his "phone" with a bluetooth headset.
While this isn't something I'd do, i think its a pretty cool idea. Only thing is, if he were to do this, he'd need to be able to call (skype or similar, no prob) and text.
I thought you could do it with skype, but apparently not...
https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA...e-number-when-sending-SMS-messages-from-Skype
I also know there are third party texting services, but i have no experiences wiht them, i have no idea what's good or not.
So, my real question is - is there any way to be able to call and text from an android tablet using the same phone number?

I know you can call from Skype as well as send texts. I'm not certain about texting from Skype on the mobile device, though. He could use a combination of What's App for texting and Google Voice for calls.
huh. can you tie the two phone numbers together?

What do you mean? Can one device have two phone numbers? No, not from a carrier. You can have one number from a wireless carrier, a Google Voice number, and a Skype number all going to the same device, though.
The only way a single device can get two cellular numbers is if it has two SIM slots.
No, no, i was saying, can you make your skype number and your watsapp-assigned number into the same phone number?
so someone can call or text you using the same number.
There is an app called viber that will assign you the same number for calls and texts. It is the best quality as far as the voip calling goes, and it was just updated so you can send picture messages as well.

Oh, no. You can't do that. You could just use Google Voice. It does voice and text messages as well as voicemail.
@ lowandbehold - perfect! except for the fact that you (apparently) can't contact anyone who doesn't have viber? That makes it a no-no.
@ cajunflavoredbob - I've heard people say that, but well, look at the attachment, this is voice on my vortex, where is it?

You have a dedicated GV number that people can send texts to. I don't personally use GV, but The Google Voice home page specifically lists text messages as being free with the GV app.
*googles*
i see that.... but i can't access it.....
and i'm sure you understand that i can't tell someone to buy something to replace their (crucial for day to day life) cell phone with something that i can't prove will work - in fact i have evidence to the contrary.
So, could someone here with a 3g/4g tab or a wifi only android device confirm that you can, if fact, use the google voice app to send/receive calls and texts using your google voice phone number? that'll make/break the deal right there.

Did you log in to your Google Voice account online and choose a number? Can't send a text if you don't pick a phone number first. Once you choose a number from the settings panel in the website, simply log in to your GV app on your device, hit menu, then compose. It literally took me three minutes to send a text from the GV app to myself after getting a number set up.
I think this number will be handy for giving to women that I'd rather not talk to again after a hard night drinking...
I have a Google voice number, that's different from my cell number.
There is no "compose" anywhere on the app. pressing menu brings up Refresh, Search, Labels, Balance, Settings, and More. More brings up Help and Send feedback.

Go to Labels > Text. Then hit Menu > Compose.
This might be redundant, but I'm covering all the bases. Keep in mind that when you download the app, Google only gives you a voicemail number. The app alone does not provide a GV number. You don't get the calling/texting number until you log into the website on a PC browser. You then go to the settings icon in the top right side of the page and choose a number for Google Voice. Once that is done, the app will update itself next time you launch it. You might need to go to Menu > Labels > Text (SMS) in order to send a message. Send a message by hitting the menu button while in the inbox and then tapping Compose. Fill in the contact name and message text and hit send.
ah, that's it. i can't used the number that google provided me with, i have to choose a new google voice number. the one google provided me with is no good, apparently. its working now, many thanks.

Heh. I figured that was it. Almost everyone seems to have trouble with that part. It would be nice if Google explained that part a little bit better, eh? Anyway, that should be everything you're looking for in a replacement app. I know that texting is free, but I'm not sure if or how much calls cost. I only know for sure that international calls cost a bit. It's cheaper than Skype either way.
US to US calls are free with google voice, i know that much
you've been a huge help, any chance you could help with the other half of the crossover?

How to get rid of my second phone...

I have my personal phone, Samsung Focus, and my work phone, iPhone 3GS, and I'd honestly like to only have to carry 1 with me, the Focus.
What I need:
Receive phone calls [Done]
Receive text messages
Receive Email [Done]
How can I have my iPhone forward text messages? Or is there a service similar to AT&T Messages I can use on my Focus to get my text messages on my iPhone?
well than try to change the number from the iphone to the focus and call it a day. I am not aware of any service that you are talking about than can forward messages from one phone to another.
I think that I might do is put the iPhone SIM Card into an old Android phone and use an SMS Relay app to forward the text messages.
You could check for a GSM shortcode that will handle SMS forwarding. I know there's one for call forwardign (you're probably already using it).
Alternatively, even if there's not an app for SMS forwarding in Apple's store, you may be able to find one on Cydia (requires jailbreaking though, which might not be OK on a "work phone").
Can you use google voice and install something like govoice on your samsung?
Just a thought.
Work provided me with an iPhone 4S and pays the bill. So, I ported my personal number for my LG Quantum to Google Voice. It made it so that I did not need to tell anyone a new number.
The official Google Voice app is not as good as some of the pay ones. I now use GV Mobile+. Also Talkatone is a google voice app that lets you talk using wifi (if connected such as at home) or data.
GV Mobile+ also supports sending pictures in text messages, unlike the official Google Voice app.
In any case, you will want to port you personal number to Google Voice.
After that, you can also take the SIM out of the iPhone and put it in a different phone. In my case, I cannot, since the iPhone 4S uses a Micro SIM, so I would need a Micro SIM to SIM adaptor.
There are Google Voice apps for Windows Phone as well.
Either way you go, the first step is porting your personal number to Google Voice.
Other advantages:
Can configure it to ring your work cell, office phone, and home phone all at the same time.
Can switch the conversation to any number you have configured by pressing * during the call.
Can easily record the conversation if you desire.
Text messages that are sent and recieved over data, so work will not notice or care.

Perhaps google voice could help or some auto SMS forwarding app on your 2nd phone

[Q] How to set default SMS account?

On my phone I use Google Voice for everything. Calls, SMS, MMS, etc. The phone is setup to use my GV number as the default "send" number. However when I send a text via Gear S3, it uses my cellular number instead of my GV number. I'm assuming it's because the Gear App on my phone is actually sending the SMS, not the default messaging app on my phone.
Is there any way around this?
Do you have the BT or LTE S3?

I can tell my experience, although it may not be 100% applicable to you. I use GV to share my number across multiple devices, including a Frontier LTE, but not paired to a phone.
All of your contacts' numbers have GV assigned alias/shadow numbers. When one of those numbers is used from a phone listed on your GV account, your GV CID is presented instead of the phone's CID. The GV app automates this process for Android and iOS devices, but it can be done manually. And this is necessary for Windows Phone, landlines, dumb phones, Tizen, etc.
I've captured the alias numbers for my contacts and added it to their profile. Which is available to any device that can access Google contacts. So when I call or text someone from the watch, I tap their alias number instead of their actual number. My watch isn't connected to a phone, so it goes out using the Tizen dialer and messaging app.
I generally use Hangouts for messaging. These are passed through to the watch, just like other notifications. I can respond to these from the watch and it stays in the Hangouts thread, which preserves the GV CID. But I cannot initiate a new Hangouts thread from the watch.
I don't know exactly how the process may be different for the BT only S3. I think most of what I've said should apply.
