openGL and live wallpaper question - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

I've tried looking into this myself, but with full time job, full time college, and new wife, don't much time. I read somewhere that the openGL 'fix' actually breaks it, defaulting to base driver or something, which makes sense since all the 3d either breaks or doesn't run (games, nav, etc.) So would it be possible to add a line to the wallpapers then that openGL=0 or something? Telling the wallpaper to not use openGL?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668257
check these out I put them together for people that wanted some LWP and Weather Animations and the 3D back. Note that not all the LWP will stick but check it out if this is what you want

yeah, I saw that, great work! I'm really interested in getting other wallpapers to stick that don't now. Like earth rotate, galaxy, etc.

well those LWP's work and stick up until the weather animations come up so i would imagine that if you delete the weather animations then the other LWP would work

I don't use the HTC weather widget so those animations never come up. Yet nothing sticks aside from a few that have been mentioned previously (bezier, digital rain, fireworks, etc).

exactly. They do when openGL is broken, so I'm hoping someone here will know if we can add a line to a smali or something to not use it for that app. I've tried looking through all the smali's, xml's, etc. and don't see anything that looks like it could just be changed, so a line may be able to be added, but I wouldn't know where or the exact syntax.

Ghods I LOVE THIS THING!
From other's comments, the HTC IME doesn't work well with this resolution. Ends up being all pixelated.
will have to wait for one for the Droid or a Nexus/HTC one I guess.

For #1, Home++ works fine - and has flip clock and flip date included in it, as well as an animated clock....but it does completely change your launcher/home apk.
It's one of the best (and my personal favorite), it doesn't know what to do with live wallpapers at all....

His point is HTC and MOTOROLA are competitiors - so don't hold your breath for them devices to share IMEs.</captainObvious>

I'm saying that he may be referring to the IME of the HTC "Droid" Eris, which is really just the hero. However, that's probably the same as the Hero's anyway.
The Eris has a normal 480x320 screen, not the larger Droid/N1-size screens, which is the issue with the HTC_IME - resolution.
-bZj
For the flip clock, try <tone=ironic>"Flip Clock" </tone>from the Market. It's by the same developer as Home++, but it's a standalone app, and a widget for the default launcher (home screen). And yes, it's animated--you can watch it flip.
For a theming app, get MetaMorph and AndExplorer. You have to download metamorph themes from the Android themes section of XDA (they're not on the Market) and unzip them to the proper folder on your sdcard, which is a bit of a a hassle, but it's amazing. If you want super, super simple, only theme the icons and wallpaper, then you want a home replacement, like Better Home. But I recommend you please, please try MetaMorph. It takes a bit of effort, but it's very simple to use once you've taken the time to unzip the file to the proper folder.
As for HTC_IME, nope. Best you can do use use Cyanogen's one, which is pixellated and doesn't look right in landscape. But until HTC releases a Sense-based device with a high-res screen, that's the best you're gonna get. (I'd love to see them release the HTC Passion with an Espresso interface... mmmmm.....)
EDIT-...someone already said what I said...had this open from earlier and didn't refresh.
Dosen't Metamorph require root tho? (remember, non-rooted here).. but I'll take a look at it.

Yep, I totally forgot you said non-root. Well, without root, you can't theme. Some apps are theme-able, but nothing outside of those apps. If you just want icons and a wallpaper, you need a home replacement that has themes. Better Home, dxTop, aHome, GDE, FreshFace... All have many themes, and I have used them all. I have finally decided which home is the best: the default. But if you really want themes, go for it.
But seriously... you should just root already.

Same here, I did like PandaHome on my G1, but I won't use OpenHome again if you paid me.. Panda was/is doing a great job on supporting all the other home themes (saved on SD card no less).. but then OpenHome started encrypting their themes so no one else could use them.. and was changing the encrypting on a regular basis so they just couldn't just add in a decrypter to the other programs.... REQUEST: HTC Hero Flip clock w/ animation

Ive seen the 1st Hero with real animation on the Home flip clock, I know devs took it of as a memory hogger, Is it me? but I dont recall seeing the home flip clock's animation even when I had all stock apps. I;d like to get it from GSM Hero and use it over here.. if any one can get it please post apk files.
Thanks in advance.
Clock animation and i think certain weather animation too was taken out for us to reduce lag. I dont care though, i'd like to have the animated flip too.
I just want the weather animation lol, that crap is cool on a winmo phone.

I'm pretty sure nobody has this widget anymore. Sense no longer includes this. I'm pretty sure the only way to get it is to find an early unreleased build of Sense. Haykuro's old builds would work but I was never able to get one from him.

Same here. When installing, it says...
"Clock widget could not be installed on this phone."
i tried installing through package installer, adb push, and i also tried to figure out the differences between the apk's of the one that kendong included in the linked post and the one on our heros. i tried to put some files that looked like handled the flip animation work, but its not working. D:

It was released - the original pre.2.73 (1.7x) had the flip clock. 2.73 was a "performance" update that removed the flip. Personally, I'm of the opinion that it wasn't the flip per se that caused the lag, just that it was seen to be.
You can find the ROMs here.
Regards,
Dave
i'm thinking that this isn't possible. not sure though.
after messing around with 4 different htcclockwidget.apk s, i've noticed that there's not actually a difference between the one that doesn't flip and the one that does. i think the differences lie in the AndroidManifest.xml, which is doing some sort of weird thing because when i place the old AndroidManifest.xml in the widget we have, Clock doesn't show up under the HTC widget menu to add. i have the feeling its got to do with the version numbers that are stored in the AndroidManifest.xml, but i can't seem to open the file because there's some sort of a syntax error. if i could access it the chances of making it work are probably 1% higher anyways, cause i don't know xml
Justinisyoung, tell me what I would need to change in it. My desktop runs Linux, so I may be able to open it somehow

i'm really not quite sure, which is why i'd like to take a look. but i have an idea that it's the operating system versions, for example, the old clock widget was probably made for 1.73 or whatever the first version was. we have to probably change it so it works with our version... cause apps have to be version consistent.

yeah so do i tbh, even the winmo sense port has the animation.
Android XML files are NOT standard XML files, they're compiled binary. I'll refer to Stericson's post here on why you can't simply edit these.
i don't see how it could be a resource hog when there are other animated clock widgets?
Hopefully they'll have it figured out and fixed in the 2.1 update.

[Idea] Weather Live Wallpaper

Just a quick suggestion to android devs who may want to make a buck or two!
Make a live wallpaper that pulls weather information down every hour or so and sets the background to that animated weather. The goal would be to get it working the same way as the HD2's animated weather backgrounds do.
I'd code this myself if I could, but I'm a little bit on the coding-challenged side. I'll type a few lines of code regardless and see what I can do.
If someone did this elegantly I would definitely pay for it!
EDIT: The developer of 'Beautiful Widgets' has said he's working on exactly this. When paired with the Beautiful Home Widget, it will display a live animation of the current weather based on what the widget's weather is.

No, sounds really clever and frees up screen space as no widget required!

No it's a blatant ripoff of the HD2 UI. Doesn't mean it wouldn't be sweet though.
There's a few live wallpapers in the marketplace at the moment that are very close to this idea. One switches the background based on weather to a static image of your choice, and the other pulls down Flickr pictures around your area of the current weather.

Just to add to this idea, it would be cool if the "live weather" background would use the screen itself as a "window" where raindrops would splash on it (when it's rainy outside). When it's sunny, it could also use the compass and accelerometer to (roughly) identify where the sun is and show glare circles that point to the direction of the sun.

Clear clock, weather, and calendar for 2.1? Where?

Guys,
I would appreciate help in locating these clear widgets since I can't find them. Im interested in the small and large digital clock; and small and large weather as well as the clear calendar.
I got spoiled by the "clear as a bell" theme for hero 1.5 roms and now would like the same for 2.1.
I found the clear lockbar but am still missing the rest.
Thanks.
EEK Now I wanna make a all clear theme... See what you have done. umm you can get some of these clear widgets from a app called Beautiful Widgets... Its in the android market, but its a paid app.. IMO its worth it.
EDIT: surprising enough i think you are one of the only people to ask this..

Thanks. Someone else suggested Beautiful Widgets but I think it would be a good idea to have a free solution for all the peeps.
I can't believe Im the only one asking about this since so many people loved the "clear as a bell" theme and widgets. That thread had a ton of hits.
Lockscreen is from JsChiSurf, clock is Beautiful widgets, appointments is pure calendar, powerbar is a metamorph theme. Not pictured is pure messenger which lists sms messages.
It's available, but the good stuff are paid apps in the market.
Here. Push this in place of the htc clock widget. clear weather and digital.

i was hoping for a port of the clear as a bell set for 2.1 as well. i was comparing the apk's of the 1.5 widgets to the 2.1 widgets, and saw a bunch of png's that were in common. however, the 2.1 set has more png's, so i am not sure of the implications if we just copy and replace the old png's into the 2.1.
I tried Beautiful Widgets and looks like the most customizable widgets I have ever seen. They are great. I just wish they had the extra small digital clock and extra small weather.

I seriously doubt that they will work but you never know. Worst case I think the widget will stop working (I hope). Anyone know for sure?
What would be the commands to push the png's and to where exactly?
I also love the clear clock and weather widgets. I am not sure what 2.1 rom you are using but if it is DC 2.7 then what I did was flash darkstars theme which has the clear main clock/weather widget. Then I flashed back to markstheme cause I like the overall color/taskbar stuff better and the clear clock/weather widget stayed for some reason, which I am happy about. I didn't feel like paying for the beautiful widget app.

You don't want to push the png's. You would need to put the png's in the proper place in the proper apk file, then you would push the apk file like this:
adb push HtcClockWidget.apk /system/app
I might be able to help you out, but I am not sure which clocks you are talking about. I see a small digital clock widget and am guessing the large one is the one with weather. Not sure what you mean by small and large weather.

I am talking about:
Clocks:
The large digital clock with weather and the smallest digital clock without weather.
Weather:
The medium and smallest weather widgets.
Sorry, I mentioned a medium digital clock, but I was mistaken. The only medium digital clock is the one in Beautiful Widgets. It takes up about half the space as the HTC one. That one is clear already though.
Here is a pic with the 4 widgets:
There are a couple different ways to make them clear, so look at the pic of the two clocks - attached here - and see if that is what you want. I wasn't sure if you wanted the white to be clear too. Side note, screencasting won't work here at work, sorry for the bad pics.

I've already tried the single-color thing, it doesn't really look good on anything other than grey/silver.

I think I'm done tweaking, now I have no idea how to package it as a "skin" (settings and all...)
Once I get it figured out, I'll post packages.
In the meantime, here's the "final" in black (my favorite, so far):
Argh, so this is turning out to be a nightmare simply because of Beautiful Widgets itself.
I've created these to look great with MY settings, but any time I change anything it just looks wrong. This widget is definitely not up to the task.
I use Apex with a grid of 5x4 and use the 4x2 Super Clock widget, and it looks great, BUT, if I use the standard 4x4 it stretches and looks bad. If I change the margins, it stretches and looks bad. If I look at it the wrong way, it stretches and looks bad. I also can't embed any of the clock's settings (text color, alphas, etc) into the skins, so color options are basically nil.
Does anyone know of a skinnable clock widget that has a 100% static size no matter what home settings you use?
