Trying to get plain/vanilla dialer onto DamageControl ROM - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

I'm trying to get the plain/vanilla dialer onto my DC ROM to replace the HTC dialer. Does anybody know how to do this?
I've found several Contacts.apk files, and have tried installing them. Some install, and some don't. The ones that do, though, force close at some point or another.
I have also tried clearing "Dialer" data, but that didn't help.
I'd love to have the vanilla dialer on this great ROM.
Any ideas?

This theme has it enabled as a choice. Check it out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=662164&highlight=theme+blue

Thanks for the tip.
Any idea how to get only the dialer without changing the whole theme?

There is a dialer.apk
Try just pushing that to your phone.

Which Dialer.apk are you referring to?
And do I push it to the location of the original APK, overwriting it? Or do I need to do an adb install of Dialer.apk?
Thanks!

Themes and mods

So here's a question from a n00b
Which mods are permanent and which ones are not? I have Eng bootloader and JF r30 1.3 which of course gave me opportunity to do all these things that you guys took time to figure out so n00bs like me can punch in some commands without knowing what it does or how it works. All I see is the end result and I love it!!!
So far I have
Custom splash1 and splash2
Auto-rotate browser and system
All cashes moved to SD
All apps moved to SD
Ringtones moved to SD
Removed Amazon.MP3 and Alarm
Installed tether-1.6.tar (whoever came up with that - THANK YOU!)
Windows7 theme.
Prior to updating to this theme I had removed amazon and alarm and they reappeared after I installed this theme. Now I'm scared to try out another theme because I don't want to re-do all the mods?
Can someone explain to me (and all of the n00bs out there) which mods are permanent and which ones need to be re-done after every theme change. Fell free to elaborate on the mods that I did not mention
Thanks to all for your past and future contributions, it's all greatly appreciated
Nothing is permanent.
The reason those apps returned after installing a theme is because those apps are present in the app folder in update.zip.
You can remove them again or simply remove them from the theme update.zip and then apply it.

The actual theme only consists of modifying framework-res.apk. In /system/apps is where you would delete stock programs, but it generally leads to stability issues when done so.
As far as permanence, if you do a wipe, then install a new version of an os, you will be stuck with whatever is in the update.zip package. You would need to pull the framework-res.apk from that new version, and then resign it, then install it in recovery mode.
The splash1 image is permanent, the splash2 isn't permanent if you decide to change themes, or wipe your phone (from my experience.)

Actualy, theming has to deal with modifying every apk. Yes majority of the work is done with framework but a good deal of work is done to launcher.apk, contacts.apk, and various other apks for custom icons and things related specifically to the apps theselves.

Now see, this is why I said right away that I'm a noob in this. I don't know what framework is, how launcher.apk works, etc, etc etc...
I kind of figured out that I will need to remove alarm and amazon again (from my earlier experience) but I really need someone to basically go thru the list and say "this will stay" or "you will need to do this again". This way I will compile a little "to do after theme install" list. I also would like to know what would happen if I end up doing the same mod twice, like running a command to move move all the apps to sd, not that I want to do it but hey, sh** happens.
At any rate, thanks to all for your replies.

Stock Message .apk and .odex

Hi i deleted mine thinking i can rely on hadcent app only but apparantly handcent needs the message app,
i receive the notification of a new txt message but when i go to handcent to read it, its not there in the conversation....
all i need is for someone to pull the message.apk and .odex file and upload it for me to download if they could be so kind...
thanks
Here you go. This is from Fresh Rom.
thanks but this is not what im looking for, i attempted to get the messages.apk and .odex file from all the roms available and its not there,
if you or anyone have droid explorer and can navigate to /system/app its in there and its called "messages.apk" , thats where i deleted mine from
I think you only need the .apk. The .odex will be built once it gets some configuration data.
ok cool, hoping someone takes 5 mins out of their day to pull just the apk file for me
sorry, i was trying to help out but....
the FRESH rom doesn't have that .apk it uses a "mms.apk"
so i'm going to try to get this posted for you, but
that will require me to recover back to last week before fresh, then pull the .apk and then post it then nandroid restore back to today..
if anyone is running a stock rom then they can pull it. otherwise it will be about 30 minutes..
ok cool thanks ill be patiently waiting
alright....
these files are from my stock-unrooted phone
i couldn't find a "messages.apk" but i grabbed all these hopefully you can make it work.
the only thing i can think of is that the MR update "fixed it" by replacing the stock messaging app. that makes sense right?
View attachment m.zip
edit:you could always flash the RUU and get them back.. or flash a nandroid backup from before you removed them.
got it working, it was the mms.apk file for some reaons it is labeled messages in droid explorer, lol shoulda tried this the first time around, not 4 or so nandroid restores later thanks guys =)
i just happened to have the same problem..
thank you so much for posting the apk. and odex..
u guys are a life saver.. ^____^
stock messaging app on htc inc
how did you re-install the stock messaging apk? when i try to do install it it acts like its installing then it just reboots and it does not install... i use to be able to receive pictures (mms) but now i can't receive at all. someone please help meeeeeeeeeeeeeee! thx i have the apk's on my SD card does it need to be on my phone in order to install it? sorry im a noob at this.
if all else fails (i did the same thing because i wanted a better stock messaging app) you can install go sms. its basically the same thing as handcent but i think it looks more professional.
it actually asked me if i had uninstalled the default messaging app and told me that if i said yes then it would just make itself the default so that was nice and simple =)
good luck. if not permanent this can just be a quick fix.
if someone finds a stock android messaging app that has bubbles please tell me =)
thanks
Mine says application not installed, omg, I accidentally deleted the Original Messaging File from my phone and I tried installing yours, but it says Application not installed. What do I do D:

AOSP apks?

Hey everyone. I have decided to get rid of some HTC apks and replace them with AOSP apks. (Music, Dialer, Browser, etc.) I am not 100% sure on which ones I will be replacing, but can someone provide a download for AOSP apks? That would be awesome because I know I can download a few ROMs here and then take out the AOSP apks, but my internet is REALLY slow, so that would take forever. Also, feel free to let me know on which ones I should take out and why. I would really like a second opinion on what all can be replaced and if replacing any would help. Let me know! Thanks to the one who uploads the apks!

that info would be great to have I would like the aosp dialer but don't know what the apk is called so I can pull it off one of the other ROMS

Definitely replace HTC mms. AOSP mms is so much faster, especially if you're using the AOSP keyboard. The email gives you a combined inbox, which is kind of nice - but attachments might not download properly. Music is nice and fast, but you don't get the lockscreen controls. Contacts/dialer is kinda personal preference. Browser always shows the taskbar and addressbar, unlike the HTC browser; it also seems a bit faster from startup. However, doubletap zoom might not work. Oh, the AOSP browser wont work without the com.cyanogenmod.android.jar and com.cyanogenmod.android.xml files (those are found in roms, so you might be out of luck with the browser...)
these apks are from Darch's roms.
What's needed to get AOSP contacts.apk to work with my awesome DCv2.06 setup? I imagine some framework is not in place - something deep like that?
Attempted to install (thought it would fail or at least not work if it did install) and it said 'Not Installed' and an OK button.

You have to push it in to system/app ... installing from a file explorer should only work for the email apk.

Wondering the same thing myself!
stuckinstupid...PLEASE change your name (Because you're stuckonsmart!), because you just got me the dialer I've always wanted! I didn't think to pull it from anyone, and further more, I didn't think to push it. I kept installing it.
thanks for the AOSP dialer i been looking for it for awhile now thanks
now im trying to decide on which MMS app i want to use i like the AOSP one better than the HTC one but it won't let you send V-cards(contact card) via MMS.

Naw, you're going to have to choose one or the other...renaming the apk won't rename the actual app

Mms --> push/replace mms.apk in system/app
contacts--> push/without replacing anything...you have to keep the HTC dialer alongside the AOSP dialer
music--> push and delete HTCmusc.apk in system/app
email--> push/without replacing anything OR simply install with file browser...you can have both HTC mail and AOSP mail at the same time
REMEMBER TO BACKUP REPLACED APKS TO SDCARD

What about the browser?
Which rom you are using would this work on Flipz?
Never mind It does work on Flipz 2.1d

For the browser, remove the existing browser.apk, replace it with the AOSP browser.apk, THEN you must place these files in the corresponding paths in your rom:

Those files can be found in Darchvanilla (in those paths).

Lol. Was just about to say I just pushed Contacts.apk to my phone (running Fresh 2.0d) and it works perfectly .
EDIT** Only thing I have found not working with Contacts.apk from AOSP is how they are listed. If you go into contacts, you can see them listed correctly (alphabetically) but the displayed alphabet is technically incorrect (if that makes any sense). For example, the names are in the correct order, but the "A" is listed under "W" even though it is up top as it should be.

Just added it. Use the Contacts.apk that someone attached above and you have to push it to your phone as a /system/app through ADB. Nothing to it. Works great, no modification needed.
Most importantly it allows you to select which groups from your contacts in google that you want to sync. An option that broke or was removed in all 2.1 based roms out right now.

Thanks for posting this.
I'm still having some trouble getting Contacts.apk on my Hero. I'm running DC 2.072.
I'm able to successfully push the Contacts.apk from this thread with the command adb push Contacts.apk /sytem/app while in recovery mode. When I rebooted, though, I couldn't find it on the phone. There's no "Contacts" app, and the only "Phone" app is the HTC one.
Any suggestions?? I have also previously tried installing the APK by copying it to the SD card and then using an app installer, but the install would either fail, or I would get an FC when launching the phone app.

[Q] Request Help modifying an app

Been trying to do this for a few days, can't get it to work.
I'm trying to modify the SMS Unread count widget so that the Widget is White instead of green. I can get it into the apk fine, but I can't get the app to install after I modify it. I have no idea why. If i push it with adb, it doesn't install, if I try to install it on the phone, it won't install.
I attached my image, the original apk and my modified apk. Make sure to rename it if you try to do anything.
Thanks for any help.
could be a simple reason why its not installing.
Dumb question 1, did you uninstall old app or are you pushing over it?
Dumb question 2, are you trying to push to /data/app?
Is this app just an unread sms widget?
1. I tried pushing over it as well as uninstalling.
2. That's where I was pushing it to, yes.
Tried it both ways, can't figure it out.
Edit: I should note that it will start to install, then say installation unsuccessful.
To mount the data use..
su
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/userdata /data
cp........blah blah
reboot
you cant remount the data, you need to reboot.
If that doesnt work, mount the data again then remove, reboot, then push the app to /system/app. Had to do that with some apps.
Let me know.
Got it to work by pushing it to /system/app/ instead of /data/app/. Thanks for your help! You helped me achieve this =). White instead of green.
The Messaging and Gmail icons are widgets that show unread count in a bubble at the top right.
Glad to help
But im confused. Your using an extra app to do something launcher pro does by default?
Is that one of the options within launcher pro? I've always used this widget because I'm used to ADW. I'll have to check it out.
Question, why did it only work within /system/app/ and not /data/app/?
Edit: Just tried it and that actually works well too. I thought it only worked with the default icon for Messaging within LP. Now I have options at least
data/app doesnt like to play nice, did you try the mounting code for data i gave? Someone had to point me to it.
I did try your code, the file went there, but wouldn't function. Pushed it to /system/app/ and it was in the widgets option after long press on homescreen.
The X is a fussy little s.o.b

It's a market app, so you can't just push it to /system/app. You have to uninstall the old one, then re-sign the modified APK, then install it using ADB install.

Not true. I have pushed many apps. I still have yet to use adb on my x.

Did you sign the apk with release keys. If not it will fail to install after you modify it.

nope, never have, i have pushed apps to both system and data. What do you mean by signing though in case i run into it.

phone apk question for GB

I would like to know what process is entailed in changing out a phone.apk
I am running a gingerbread 2.3.4 rom deodexed, but with a stock dialer and I hate it.
I have seen some roms using an ics style dialer thats much cleaner, but I cant figure out how to make the switch.
I tried asking for and installing a copy of the ics style phone.apk ( renamed old one, copied new one in, set permissisons, rebooted to recovery, wiped dalvik, rebooted, and fail - the lock screen came up but when unlocked the phone was just black and I was forced to cwm reinstall rom).
Pointers?
i belive you installed a wrongrom or something in the system that went wrong like it being odexed or deodexed

Also try a different APK, they don't all work with all ROMs
Also, you can flash a theme with a better dialer or use a theme manager engine if you are on CM7 base too.
ok, so basically switching out the contacts.apk and phone.apk should have worked with proper permissions set up, I just used a wrong type of apk?
I hadnt thought about just theming it - havent gotten into that yet, but thanks for the suggestion, as I may look into that then.

It could work with another APK, depends where you got it from. A Sense APK would never work in an AOSP ROM for instance.
Theming might be more fun.
