Hey guys!
Does anyone know if there is a way for the facebook tab for a contact to bring up the facebook app instead of launching the mobile facebook website?
For clarification: bring up a facebook linked contact in sense and click to view their profile, a comment, or an update. m.facebook launches in the browser for me. I would much prefer the facebook app instead.
Thanks!
This points out yet another reason to freaking uninstall that facebook app. It doesn't DO much does it?
I like the app and this seems like HTC's fault or maybe Google's. You know how when you have multiple apps duplicating functionality you get to choose which app handles each request and/or set default. Maybe Google needs to add an action for facebook?
Also the notifications that the facebook app fires off link to the mobile website instead of opening the app? What the?

No, this fault lies 99.996% on the Facebook app developers.
It's a sorry excuse for an official Facebook application in every right, especially when a 3rd party dev bests it with a limited SDK (See Babbler for Android).

Which app do you advise ? The Samsung integrated in the Social Hub or the official one from the market ?
I come from a TP where I really liked HTC's integration of facebook in Sense. Not too invasive and living quite well with my exchange account
Right now my contacts in my outlook (2011) on my PC are linked with their facebook profile, and so are they in Sense. With my Tab I worry a little bit about putting a mess in a system that has found its balance
Any risk to duplicate contacts if I use the Samsubg app ? Or the Android app ? Will they merge properly with my exchnage contacts ? Stay aside ?
I just dont wnat to make the step to find out after I messed up my contact list (More than 1200 people so clenaing that up would take me a few days....)
Hi I use Facebook from the market and also use one called boo

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The built-in one is pretty much for synching only, any actual facebook viewing would need to be done via the browser.
I switched from the built-in SNS client to the official Facebook client and didn't experience any problems.

I haven't installed anything yet Not tryig to fix anything just trying to be sure what I'll do wont create troubles to my contact list
The built-in app is just meant to sync your existing contacts on the phone and match them with facebook friends ? Or it adds all the facebook friends ?
The official app doesnt do this ?
Don't get the account permissions confused if you install the market app. Its annoying to find you gave the stock app permissions that arent on the market app.

Both versions sync contact pictures etc. The official app gives you the option to sync pictures+status updates with all friends, just those with existing contact entries, or none at all.

Anyone ? Maybe I am making too much fuss about this but I dont wnat to mes up my exchange contact list...
Not 100% sure about this, but I don't think it will mess up any of your existing contacts.
When logging in using the official Facebook app, it will create a sort of 'profile' for all existing contacts -- it won't merge info with the actual contact. You'll see this when you edit a contact, there will be 2 (or more) tabs when editing the contact.
It's like a 'Metacontact' in Trillian wherein it's only a merged 'View' of a contact, but in reality the data is in separate 'profiles'. The Facebook tab is uneditable and will only display info.
The only problem I have so far is that when creating a new SMS, it will display -ALL- contact numbers and e-mail address of contacts, even if the number is exactly the same:
i.e. I have a contact named Bob Smith in my Google, Exchange and Facebook accounts, and they are merged as one account. In the Dialer, all the info is merged into one contact when displaying, but when editing, they are editable in 3 separate tabs.
However when I create an SMS and scroll to find Bob Smith, it displays all contact infos of Bob Smith, even duplicate ones, like if I have his number +123456789 on Google and Exchange and Facebook, it displays 3 same numbers when selecting a recipient.
Edit:
Also, when you sign out or remove the Facebook app, it will delete the Facebook 'profile' of the contact on your contacts list, maintaining the state of the previous contact before you logged in / installed Facebook.
Thanks a lot, that's good to know
I already saw the mess it was having google contacts and exchnage contacts (I usually maintain both... for 1200 contacts!) The worst is for contacts for which I entered only the first name... they happen to be all merged together (Well done samsung... They could have defined a merge key a bit larger than just the name........)
What about when you use the Samsung app ?? Someone knows ?
I like the facebook app for android, it's finally getting close to the functionality of the iPhone app. I have one annoying problem though, I want links to facebook I get in gmail to open in the Andoid facebook App. Does anyone know how to make this happen? Is there maybe a helper app in the market that fixes this?

I'll look into Flow, thanks.
Also try Bloo

Let meknow if you can't find the app, its no longer under development but I choose to believe its the best app that I ever come across for Facebook

Bloo was awesome. Flow seems to be what Bloo could have been. I just wish there was a an intelligent connection between email and the Facebook Android App.
Facebook app for Android sucks compared to the iPhone version. One of the few things I miss about the iPhone.
Has anyone gotten facebook working?
The app can be sideloaded... some have reported it working - for me it crashes about half the time tho.

It crashes when I load it up. It i use it from an app i have no problems.
Isn't it already included ?

The "Facebook App" that is included with the device is really just an icon that loads the mobile website into the Silk browser. It's not the real Facebook app and you can't download the App from the Marketplace or the Google Market.
If you sideload the App, it appears to work when you first open it, but then later it will ALWAYS force close when you go to your News Feed. The only way to get it to load again is to clear the Cache and Storage area. So, the real Facebook App is actually useless on this device right now and you should just stick with the Facebook URL hyperlink icon that comes with the device.
I see, thanks for the explanation.
Anyway, on a 7" pad it should be comfortable to use the Facebook website, so what's the point in having a Facebook app ?

The mobile website IS pretty good now, but there are some things missing from it. For example, Facebook chat. You could just use the Messenger app, but still, it's nice to have everything in one place.
That is just one example, though.
i kinda prefer the Messenger app over Facebook app's own chat. so, Messenger works on the rooted Kindle Fire?
facebook app alternative
I don't know if any of you have tried out friendcaster but it's a great replacement for facebook. I use it on my viewsonic gtablet and it does everything the facebook app does and more.
Is there any way to fix it without using third party apps?
Another one with the same problem. Even a third party app would be fine for me... Any suggestion?

Its not broken. The Official Facebook application doesn't support Android 4.0 just yet so you will not be able to sync your contacts to your device. The only method is to use third party applications. I use Friendcaster Pro and it works really well.
Unfortunately, Till Facebook adds compatibility to the official application... you will not see your contacts sync to your device
Nope, the issue is between Google and Facebook, so we won't see contact sync fixed until Google and Facebook make an agreement or until a custom ROM fixes is. I forget the whole story, but I think Facebook doesn't use Android's contact API so when you sync Facebook contacts with your phone they all stay with Facebook and aren't stored locally on the phone. If you uninstall Facebook all your Facebook contacts go to. Google doesn't like that FB doesn't let you control and keep your FB data on your phone so they revoked Facebooks access to the API.
EDIT: heres an article about it: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/22/google-disables-contact-sync-in-facebook-for-android-only-nexus/

You sorta proved my point. More or less its not compatibility with Android 4.0 but its the Nexus S. Once again Facebook will have to upgrade the application in order to make it compatible with the Nexus S. Only difference between what I said is instead of Android 4.0 its for the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus
Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data.

Facebook never updated the app on Gingerbread. Facebook sync was included in custom ROMS because developers enabled it. Nothing to do with official support from Facebook. Until Google and Facebook sort this out, vanilla Android won't support contact sync, unless Facebook starts using the regular contact API
Friendcaster is not allowing me to login (whitepage)... Is it really compatible with ICS?

Thanks! This worked
If you are OK with 3rd party apps, take a look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20477937#post20477937
Facebook ads are getting more and more frustrating.
Basically, every 4th story is an ad.
Now, I'm not even a heavy Facebook user. I open it maybe 10-15 times per day. It still frustrates me.
I have tried AdBlock and am currently using adguard private DNS. They both killed most ads, but Facebook ads are resilient.
Is there a way to get rid of them or do I need to use a 3rd party app (I tried those before but I don't find them great).

I think the only way is unistalling Facebook itself, they're know for the great progress they bring on countering AdBlockers. Usually I would try to help you to modify the app in order to filter the ads layout but with Facebook it's way more complex, I don't think I can help you here .

That's unfortunate.
The 3rd party apps are very slow and not even closely as fluid as Facebook. Maybe it's because they integrate messenger in the Facebook app, but yeah, everything takes a second or two.
In that case, I'd rather have ads.

I use firefox with adblocker add-ons, then I put a shortcut from firefox to the Facebook webpage on my homescreen. This setup does not slow my device down like the Facebook app or messenger app. This setup requires setting facebook settings to email you when you get Facebook notifications and set gmail to notify you when you get an email, this allows me to still follow up to date activity. Another thing that is necessary with this setup is, if you want to check your Facebook messages, open firefox menu and select the "request desktop site" option, then you can check your messages.
With this setup, you retain your device perform with less lag and you can still view all Facebook activities and read your messages and receive Facebook notifications.
