Hi all,
How can I include the google apps (gmail,market,gtalk,etc...) in my AOSP donut for sapphire?
thanks in advance
see my response to your thread under general
i have google apps and I would like build AOSP with google apps
well due to the legality issue i would still recommend building your AOSP without the apps, then just get people (or yourself if its just for you) to install the defanged base before installing your aosp... if you still want to bundle them with your build mabey ask in the G1 dev section as it gets alot more visibility..

Hi everyone !
Maybe my question is idiot (and I apologise for that if it is) but Android 4.2 has Chrome as default browser so why Cm10.1 which is based on Android 4.2 doesn't have Chrome as default browser ?
CM10.1 is not made by Google and they wont run into copyright issues by distributing it as such.
Oh okay thank's !
Copyright is a tricky thing on Android. Its why most (if not all) ROMs give you a separate download link for GApps (Google Apps). If you was to start adding stuff you didn't own, you could end up in a legal battle.
Thks
Google wont mind if they include it because its open source , CM Team has done a great favor to Google so they wont disappoint them
We may see it in future ..

But Google does mind, which is why none of the other google apps (play store, youtube, etc) are included by default. It's probably a branding/trademark issue.
As I recall, cm is not an "approved" ROM by Google... So play store can't verify that all apps work (of course, they do work, but Google can't check all of them to make sure they do...)
At least, that's Google's reasoning...

But you can of course install Chrome and make it the default browser yourself

Oh absolutely. Did that myself

When team CM and developers made gapps (flash-able .zips actually) available on internet, Google took action against them after that developers community opposed and criticized Google..
In the end Google started treating them softly ..
Good Day Guys
Well I am not going to ask what is the best Custom Rom out there since there are lots and its all about personal choice, what I would like to know is if anyone can help me with the following:
- Want a Custom ROM that is Similar to Energy HD2.0 but with latest JellyBean Update (I like the original JellyBean Icons) not the ones found in FoxHound or CyanogenMod
- It must also have the GMAIL & Normal Email Setup feature since I run multiple email accounts on my phone so the second EMAIL option is a must
- It must also be stripped down from the Normal Stock Clutter apps like Chaton, Chrome etc
- Must still have most default Google Services like Google Navigation & Google Maps (Very Important)
I would have liked to install Energy HD 2.0 but i understand its been discontinued/not updated in a while.
Thanks beforehand for your help :fingers-crossed:
MMM there seems to be no one able to help?
Hi!
What's the preferred way of finding/installing/updating apps on CM12?
( I know "how to", but I don't know "how I should" - ideally )
Install f-droid and let it do the work?
And if I do, will those apps and their data survive CM updates by default / without intervention?
(p.E. if I update to a new nightly with the default "update" mechanism, that already popped up in my face and is currently downloading because the new nightly seems to have arrived while I was flashing the phone)
Are there any mechanisms in place to automatize updates (not sure what the "cyanogen accounts" are for) that I should be using?
Should I decide to install that "google play" stuff (I probably won't) - do those generally work well with CM (long term I mean)?

Hello and thank you for using XDA Assist.
We can't provide technical support her eon XDA, but in the Android world, the easiest, safest and most common way to download and update apps is to simply use the Google Play Store. User apps (as opposed to system apps) are generally not disturbed by a simple CM update, but if needed your apps and settings can be automatically restored when you switch to a new ROM or device if you use your Google account's "sync" feature.
For generic CM issues, start with their WIki at https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Main_Page. Since you forgot to mention which device you have, I can't point you to a specific XDA area where to address your CM questions, but you can find your device's Forum from the list at http://forum.xda-developers.com/compact. If you still have questions or concerns, try posting with all the relevant details in the general Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting forum at http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help.
Good luck!
Thanks, that confirms that things really are like they look... I kept hoping I just couldn't find the right resources there for a while.
Well, guess I'll get used to it sooner or later.
F-Droid did a good job so far and everything installed with it survived the first ROM update without problems.
( A "real Linux/GNU style" package manger / software repository or something like that would have been a very nice thing to have on that phone, though. )
When i flashed the Custom Rom 3.4.0 Sultan - CAF i couldn't find the the default gallery app and the exchange mail app. I need it because i do not like the google photo's and for the exchange mail app i have download the 3rd party apps which has limited version.
That's strange, I'm on CM13 from Sultan and I have both apps. I also know for a fact the CM12.1 version also contains both apps you're missing. Even if you are missing them, I can't believe that you couldn't search for the apks yourself but here you go:
CM Gallery: forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/cm12-gallery-app-t3026770
I'll let you search for the email one yourself so you can practice those Googling skills
If for some reason sideloading the apps doesn't work, just reflash the ROM. It's supposed to contain both apps.

Thank you very much... I was not getting this Gallery app anywhere...
We see nowadays all MIUI global ROMs are coming with Google dialer and Google messages apps, I am actually not sure why this is happening there must be some reason behind it. I pressure google is trying to incorporate the chat functionality within the messaging app similar to Whatsapp/ Telegram. But I don't see that is working as of now in the Google message app, it is still looking for a working MMS option that involves additional cost. So there is no point using this at this moment.
Due to this reason, many people are moving to EU ROMs as they are maintaining MIUI dialer and message apps which are more comfortable and reliable integration with MIUI themes. Everyone may not be technical enough to move to EU ROMs easily. So all put together join your hands and let Xiami know the fact that people are looking for MIUI dialer/Messages in all upcoming ROMs.
I like as little bloat as possible on my phone, so Google apps all the way. Hell I wish all phones were in the Android One program, or at least there were more contemporary Android One options.
