Need some help. - General Topics

Hi everyone!
For all my life, I have never owned a smartphone before. Feature phones have gotten really lame, but thankfully, my two year contract on my LG Viewty ends in early june (or very early july...I'm not too sure).
I have a few phones to choose from, but I am very uninformed when it comes to phones so I thought I would ask the experts
I'm not a businessman, but I would like to have a document editor available (even if I have to pay for it). Mainly this phone is for play with a very small amount of work involved (push email would also be nice). Given this information, would you recommend Windows Mobile or Andriod?
It's between the HTC HD2 and the HTC Desire.
It really just comes down to Andriod+AMOLED vs WinMo+4.3inch screen.
I am a university student and cannot afford to pay for the phone up-front. Nor can I afford a phone every year, so I will buying these on a 2 year contract. I really just want a phone that will last 2 years before I get absolutely sick of it.
Sorry for the wall of text
Thanks!

I must say that I like your nick!!
I would ask you the following;
Do you need a hardware keyboard?
Can you wait 6 months to buy?
I can see Leo could be good for you

Thanks mate.
I don't need a hardware keyboard. If I had to choose between a phone that had a hardware keyboard and a phone that didn't, the keyboard will be the last thing I compare. If the rest of the specs were the exact same, I would choose the one with the keyboard though
As for waiting six months...hmmmmm, it really depends on what the phone is. (I forgot to mention that I live in Australia, so it I may have to wait even longer than six months )
Lastly, the main usage(s) of my device will be to surf the net, play a game every once in while, email (push email would be very nice), take photos, edit the occasional word document and listen to music.
What I wouldn't like to have is a resistive touch screen and a phone with no support (with the exception of the camera and media playback, the LG Viewty has taught me exactly what I don't want in a phone). The only thing I really need is a phone that will last 2 years or as close to 2 years as possible. My sister got her Iphone 3G on day one and she is still happy with it. I also want this phone to last close to 2 years without being an Iphone.

Anyone?

Any word on a "NEW" htc x7510 or similar

Hi all,
I was wondering if HTC was coming out with a "newer/updated" version of the x7510 or something similar. I now it's a niche device so it's rare I come across anything like it. I don't mind waiting to spend the money on a newer version of the device instead of buying a used one on ebay.
Any help with this questions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

This was supposed to be out about now but I haven't heard much lately:

Wow, depending on how this thing set up, it can be successfully marketed as a total Kindle, iPad, dell mini 5 killer. I hope its real!
Im sure looking also forward to the upcoming model, if it comes
the specs looks awesome, 1gig , 5mb camera and im looking to see
how the sdd size will be,.
let's hope and see what HTC will comes up..
still happy so far with the HTC X7510 which is a killer device.
Am pretty sure that we will not see any new models within the Advantage-series. Basing this on info from HTC since we work with them and we use 7500/7510 in our productionline where we install our own applications and sell to blue-lights...
But, I *HOPE* I'm wrong becasue I too want to see a new and improved Advantage.
I would love to know if this new device is coming to the UK in April as HTC told me just a month ago there would be no replacement for the X7510.
Is there anymore info on it yet?
Successor to HTC Advantage?

I personally think HTC may be missing an opportunity. With all the rave about the iPad, its critics point out the iPad's missing features and imperfections. When you look at what those critics would like to see (video-conference camera, etc), you get the feeling that they are actually describing something like Advantage x7510. HTC was ahead of its time when it released the x75xx series, and that was why they did not sell many units. Now the market has woken up to the realisation that something like the x75xx is really the ideal, practical business device. That is what the iPad tries to be - and all those other devices with giant screens. Several people who have seen me use the HTC x7510 at meetings have asked how they could get one. They feel disappointed when I tell them HTC don't make them any more! I have never seen any unit on sale on eBay. Why? No sane owner of an HTC Advantage would want to part with it!
Now is the time for HTC to release a re-born Advantage with:
Capacitive screen
1 GHz Snapdragon processor or similar
WVGA (480 x 800) resolution
A more secure cover for the battery/miniSD card/ SIMcard compartment
Improved camera (Not just megapixels, but really sharp pictures)
USB host
Bluetooth keyboard (optional)
I hope HTC is listening!
I agree - the good thing about the ipad is that it will launch a huge market in tablet like devices such as the Advantage. I was rather dreading the day I lost or damaged my Advantage, as it is so useful as a PDA/email/internet.
I agree - every time I use my Advantage, people comment. I think the problem was that HTC was not so well known when it brought out the Advantage, so it got forgotten by the market, plus, being honest, the Advantage does have its issues, such as the fact that it is memory strapped and is so sloooooow. It still gets commented on, and for many purposes, it is a useful alternative to laptop for up to a day out of the office.
A new one, better battery, capacitive screen, running Android, could be a winner, I completely agree.

It's really quiet in here.
Just Google for the Dell Mini 5 - a complete re-working of the Advantage concept, though without keyboard (but capacitive screen and onscreen keyboard mean this is not really necessary).
Looks really good.

if you look around this whole site, there is the odd forum devoted to devices running a little known OS called Android. I didn't realise that everyone here had to be signed up to Microsoft.
Seriously, with WM being consigned to the bin of history, we are all going to have to shop around. Android looks good to me, and it is developing fast. Unlike Windows Mobile. The Dell Mini 5 looks a worthy successor to the Advantage in just about every way IMHO.

It may be presumptuous to say that WM is "being consigned to the bin of history". It really depends on what you are looking for. I have read the tentative specifications of the Dell Mini 5. I would have loved to see it as "a worthy successor to the Advantage", but I really don't: With NO MS-Word or MS-Excel compatible editors (only viewers), it cannot replace my HTC Advantage. Until Google Apps includes real productivity tools, it cannot replace WM for me.

I didn't realise it didn't have document creation ability that is a very good point.
However, looking around at the developers, it really does seem like everyone is calling time on WM development - I wish it were not so, I should be able to keep my kit going for another year or so, but let's face it, it's time to side-grade.
I remember when Psion went out of business, I kept using my kit for a little while, but it soon became too difficult to keep it running. The world had moved on - exchange sync-ing rather than simple email for one thing. It's very sad, I have kept with WM since I ditched my Psion kit, I thought Microsoft would be a safe bet and I would never have to change, but they screwed up in a major way.
I think Dell's Mini 5 is the way to go - but it will be a little time before it is ready, that is all. The Advantage should keep going for a year or two.

Android and the future of WM
As I said earlier, it is all about what you are looking for. In my view, WM will remain for as long as MS-Office remains the dominant productivity tool in our offices, and as long as Google has not ported its web productivity tools into Android in a way that they can truly replace MS-Office. The true death knell for WM will be when I can use Google Docs on Android and can sync my Android device with MS-Exchange. Of course, for those only interested in social networking, these are not a consideration and the Android is good enough as it is.
I would not even talk about Apple's devices. They are great for their cool factor. But I do not see them as serious business tools.
Over time, if Microsoft refocuses on WM, it could survive many more years as a niche OS, for those who want their "office in the pocket", especially if Microsoft collaborates with the likes of HTC to blend the best of WM with the usability of Android.

Help me choose a smartphone for my mother

OK, I never thought I would be writing a post like this but the time has come, my mother is moving from her Nokia 2630 phone, that does not ring any more and wants something that can have some dictionaries installed on.
I am a long time user of smart phones, but I always stuck to WM. My mother sees my HD2 and she wanted something not as big, but with some extra futures.
So, after carefully thinking about this I have decided that an Android phone would be best for her. WM is too complicated, and I have read some nice things about android, even though I have never played with one. It looks simple, and I have high hopes that with a phone like that my mother will learn how to send SMS (she never adapted to the numerical keyboard that phones for writing). But she can write a SMS on my HD2, so I hope Android should be the one.
My mother does not need a Nexus ONE or a Samsung Galaxy S.
Something a bit smaller would be better for her, and does not need the 1Ghz horse power for what she will be doing on it, which should be:
a) make and receive calls
b) hopefully SMS and e-mails
c) listen to her mp3 dictionaries, is learning French at the moment
d) wants to have installed dictionary on her phone, so she does not have to carry heavy dictionaries with her
e) Bluetooth sharing files
f) take some pictures
I wanted a not very expensive phone, which I am going to buy from eBay probably.
I was thinking HTC Hero, HTC Magic (I do not even know what the difference between these two phones is). But I was thinking about something with the 528Mhz and a bit of RAM so that it works smoothly enough for my mother to playfully learn how to use.
Thank you all for your help.
PS: I have no clue about other Android phones that are not made by HTC, so if you think that other brand is more suitable for her, I have no problems of buying it.
Good guy~
I agree that Android would be much more suitable for her than WM.
I think what you should mainly care is the phone's camera cause the need of "take some pictures"..
I just know this..
i just envy her so much, even now. Loved reading ur post.
i think
nokia express music
is ok for her
Thank you all for your replies, but if someone could suggest to me an Android phone or at least what is the difference between Hero and Magic, and which one gets more support from the community, it would be very helpful to me.

I though about Nokia, but symbian is such a strange OS, my mother would probably just stick to phone calls and pictures. It is good to listen to music, but I am not sure if there are many French dictionaries for symbian.
Besides that I kinda like the Android community here, so it would be easier for me to buy her one, and if she needed anything, I could solve the problem quickly and easily with all your help off course.
Thank you once again.

windows 7 htc 7 pro

Hi long time no post
For the last few years I have been waiting patiently for a predecessor to the xda exec , none arrived so I decided to go for the new 7 pro as it seemed to be the closest I will ever get .
It arrived and I was absolutely chuffed HTC have outdone thierself. I have had it for less than a week and I am well miffed with it already . HTC and Microsoft haven't seemed to of talked with each other over this phone . My guess is this is exactly the same rom as the hd7 only a small amount of apps rotate when the keyboard is slid out basically text and web . Kind of pointless keyboard really .
I came to terms with this and decided not a problem then my next snag was I went out of signal and would not reaquire on its own . I turned on and off airplane mode ,it didn't make a difference. I removed the battery and replaced and got 3 bars straight away , I haven't had this problem since a Nokia 8210 !
The final straw was Monday I changed to nightshift so I set my alarm to wake me up guess what it didn't and i was late. to make it worse it completely muted my phone aswell. The cure was yet again removal and refit of battery. I thought maybe it was me so I tried again with back up this time my HTC diamond 6.5.1rev and It did the same again no sound only vibrate and muted phone again. out came the battery again.
I have decided to go iPhone which does miff me off as i have waited for Microsoft all this time when i should of switched right at the beginning .
My outcome of the whole ordeal is the phone itself is awesome.beats the iPhone hands down ,i am actually in love with it it is that good (except speaker in underside?) but Iam fed up with being a windows guinea pig
Also I am very disappointed with marketplace , I find it hard to beleive that there is zero Sat nav software available . I have always stuck to windows purely for that reason . The I phone has for me in the UK a free Prog called navfree and it ain't far desimilar to TomTom. What does market place have to offer no half decent freebies at all
I feel that the UK will be an iPhone only country except for some foolhardy old timers like myself who are deluding themselves. Microsoft need to put out some damn good software on market place for free. I don't think they have risen to the iPhone challenge at all

You can't be coming here criticising MS, the uber microites will be after you for blasphemy.....
we've gotten to a point of not really caring i think... this person has their point of view, that's fine. though it would of been better for him/her to do their homework before buying the device, but aye, i'm sure there is also cooling off period.
at the end of the day, if they're not happy with it, that's fine, swap it up for something you'll like and hopefully when that contract is up, Windows Phone will be at a point where it does meet your needs and you return. If not, all good, enjoy whatever phone you pick up.
Enough said?

In consideration of a qwerty keyboard, whats better?
I'd like to point out to the OP that the iPhone Appstore has been in existance for over 3 years... the WP7 marketplace has been available for only 4+ months...
You gotta give the developers some time to develop these good apps.
Be patient... As they say, Rome wasn't built in a day!

I think that the Nokia alliance will greatly help with Navigation and Marketplace issues overseas as Nokia already has a great variety of licenses and products over there that Microsoft will not utilize.

My DVP is amazing, be sure to get the 8 gig though and upgrade it up to 32 gigs as you see fit. The 16 gig is known to have issues though it seems to be SD card related. The quantum is good though the screens a bit small for my taste (I like 3.8+ inch screens) LG does have the best apps though.

Whats on the market place has little to do with Microsoft, please direct all moans to the likes of tomtom and garmin etc for not pulling their fingers out, they have had plenty of time and MS is usually very good for offering assistance on such matters.
Pitty you didnt have much luck with that, the OS is great, new hardware will be on the way in due course so hopefully things will get sorted soon, i dont suppose you tried another one did you? not beyond the realm of posibility that your device was in some way buggered.

[Canadian] The big @$$ Canada Thread

Hi all,
Searched for one big Canadian updates thread haven't found any, though I would creat this one.
I'm back with my Galaxy S2 LTE HD on CM 10.1 , after I sold my S3 in anticipation of the S4.
Now I want your opnion (some of you will like this)
Imagine you are a long time Nokia fan (don't ask me why!) you move to another country, you find a carrier with good monthly plan, you get a phone (that happens to be an entry level Android) you are excited to what it is capable of.
your friend the geek tell you about all the apps you can install, but your Android 2.3 phone gives you out of memory errors (you have no clue how to solve that), you miss having a front facing camera and on top of that one day you drop the phone and smash its screen.
Now you want a new phone. you call your geek freind in Canada (you see now where this is going) and he is totally unfamiliar with most of the models that are in offer, you discover together that the company runs a CDMA network :silly: . So this excludes most of the NORMAL phones, you also discover that they charge alot for models tat came out 2 years back, cheaply bought second hand off ebay!
You are on a budget , you want the best phone for the least price. your friend reach out for the community to help him out (Ok now you are getting it) and he asks the community to take a look at :
virgin mobile usa --> Phones
and decide which phone the friend should buy.
This is a great excercise , because some of the phones are not familiar so you are only armed with your knowledge of the brands and the features/specifications listed & expected performance.
let me know, the story is real, he is still waiting using a crappy phone from the carrier's recycling bin!
thanks for reading

magine a world without HTC

It is really a good artical to read. Lots of innovation from HTC in smartphone world.
http://pocketnow.com/2013/05/22/imagine-a-world-without-htc
It give lots of history what HTC has accomplished in past, most guy started to use iphone and enter the smart phone world will never know those history.
I do not know that HTC was first to put GPS in the smartphone even I owned O2 device.
In the end of he said
"I’ll admit I’ve made a decision when it comes to the future that I want. You’ll ask, what does my decision have to do with the industry, right? Well, as a matter of fact, each of us defines it as customers. Surely you all know that at Pocketnow we all review phones and therefore, since we always have review units to test, we rarely ever buy devices of our own. That said, I’ve decided to buy an HTC One out of my own money. I do feel HTC deserves it. Surely it may not save HTC, but I hope that my two cents of contribution help."
I'm glad I bought HTC one which is marketable.
What you think? Without HTC in the last 10 years, the XDA will not be so hot place for us at least.
anyone can let me know or moderate to help update the title? I miss one "I" before the magine
I don't want to live in a world of phones with physical home buttons! Die Samsung! Long live HTC!
Loving this phone at the moment.
It's good to see another positive article on this forum.
Sent from my HTC One
Is "magine" like the word "merican"?
I do not want to imagine a world without HTC.
I have owned nothing but HTC since I pre-ordered the G1. Three G1's, 2 G2's, an Amaze, a ONE S and a ONE later, I still can't find anything I prefer over HTC. I know there are other great devices out there but I always end up spending my money on HTC. I almost took the leap on the GS3 but after holding it in person, it just didn't fit for me. I even walked in with every intention of buying one but I walked out with the ONE S and never looked back. I am even sold on Sense 5. I was quite angry about losing vanilla after the G2 but I think Sense 5 fits quite nicely with HTC and it's brand.
Really, HTC has always been a great phone for me and I think it would have been great for others had they known anything about them. How can you compete with a brand that is so diversified like Samsung. They have played the game well and made themselves a household name. Almost everyone has some sort of Samsung product and we tend to stick to what we know and what is shoved down our throat. Us old school guys know what HTC has done for smartphones and Android. The problem is nobody else does.
I hope HTC can pull through this as I am really looking forward to what they can do as the next step from the ONE.
Brilliant Post!!
