Google talk in 2.1? - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

Every 2.1 rom I have downloaded on here does not have google talk in it, now I know this is asking for a noob response but...where the hell is it? I use to to talk to friends who dont have unlimited texting on verizon so its kind of an important thing.

Its in your drawer... should just say talk, instead of google talk... all of the ROMs that I've used have it.

I did the same thing. The app name is now called Talk instead of Google Talk or GTalk.

It is called Talk as mentioned. I also wanted to share my experience with Talk. Some of the ROMS have aggressive memory killing settings, and Talk would die. I had to back down to moderate settings to keep Talk running right. You might also be able to exclude Talk somehow but I'm not sure.

Anyone know why these programs keep auto starting?

I was wondering if anyone knows why these programs are auto starting. I closed them via advanced task killer and they keep coming back.
They are:
- messages: I use handcent. I don't use the stock one, and I turned off notifications and defaulted handcent as my text program.
- com.coremobility.app.vnotes: not sure what this is.
- Sprint navigation: I have gps turned off.
I get the same thing plus Google Voice, Voice Dialer, Voicemail I have Google Voice set to never be used I never use Voice Dialer, and Voicemail just pops up occasionally

Uh, if you will never use Google Voice, then why in the world is it installed?
hanscent works off of the stock apps cache, it cant keep threaded convos without the stock (crap) app.
core.mobility.app.vnotes is visual voicemail
sprint nav is a pain and could be trashed at any time for better efficiency. Unneeded for those with google maps installed, imo
I have google voice set to never be used but that doesn't mean I never use it
google maps has navigation?
Is there anyway I can keep them from opening until needed?

google maps has text, not voice navi...thats enough for me. Google Navigation will have full navigation with voice.
as far as an autokill, I'm not sure what can be done to stop them. In autostarts, it shows you what environments some processes start in, and some seem quite unrelated (Sprint Navi starts with sms received). I'd say get taskiller free and pluck them off whenever you notice the phone getting laggy
Alright. Thanks.
is there a better navi we can download ( besides google maps )
What about a better keyboard?
So I was determined to figure out how to disable these apps from autostarting and I just figured it out. Ha. Now I just need to see if I can make it run with the install of fresh rom or if it will be a separate thing. I'll let you all know when I get it figured out.

I'm not sure on the navi, all of them are pretty heavy on the memory. Sprint Navi is quality, it's just bloated, IMO. I don't travel alot so it's not a necessity to me.
keyboard- the best is better keyboard, it's a paid app but it's an upgrade from stock. I'm still on stock and with the added speed boost from .7, it seems alot more precise

Visual Voice Mail

Developers,
Is there any way to make Visual Voice Mail work with Goog Voice instead? I refuse to pay $2/mo on TOP of $29/mo for VVM. Should be free in my opinion. I'd like to redirect VVM to contact GV instead so I don't have to go into the GV app to see my vm's.
Thanks.
I do the same and have the google voice app on my phone. But 9 times out of 10 im on a PC anyway and check it there.
just install the official google voice app from the market, it will walk you through on setting up no-answer call forwarding so when you dont pick up it forwards to your google voice vmail box.
comes in handy when you can just glance at the transcript and decide if its worth listening to

I might be misunderstanding -- but why is this needed? There's a dedicated app for Google Voice that works great, and you can remove VVM entirely when rooted. I'm confused why anyone would want to use an app specifically designed for one service on a different service, when a perfectly good app exists for that different service... is it just an aesthetic thing?
Absolutey don't mean to be rude, just trying to understand the reasoning!

Well, maybe it's me, but I don't like having to go into two diff. apps to get the job done. I HATE having to switch apps to get this done. Not only that, but going into the Messaging app, and not being able to use part of it (I can't remember off the top of my head, but maybe dialer also) just reminds me of how much Verizon is trying to nickel and dime me. We pay $30 extra a mo. for service. That should be ALL inclusive, but NO! $2 extra for voice mail, $5 extra for messages, $30 extra for tethering... I mean seriously?
And seeing that non-working VVM in the Messaging/Dialer just extremely P!$$3$ me off! Not to mention that even though GV is GREAT, and well interfaced, it still doesn't work as seamlessly as the telco's original.

Google voice is not directly linked to your cell phone number.. Google voice assigns you a number and then links it up to your phone. It's true though that you can get google voice to act as your visual voice mail provider for the cell phone number you have.. but it is a bit buggy..
I am with the OP.. if there is a way to use the built in VVM without paying..I'll be all over it.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the buggy part.... Google Voice works really well (been using it for 2 months). It's free and has more features than Verizon. To be honest, I thought the Verizon VVM was a lot more buggy than Google's.
My 2 cents...
I used youmail on my blackberry, and its only better on the incredible.

I second that- I set up GV to be my VM service for my cell and even set up personalized greetings for almost everyone in my contact list. The transcriptions are not perfect, but i get the gist- and if I'm really curious, I just listen to the VM.

Although nowhere is it clear cut on what "development" actually scopes, it has been the senior mods practice to keep development to ROM cooking/system hacking. Since this is clearly an app thread, I am moving it to the correct forum, yet leaving it linked in development. Please keep the above in mind before starting a new thread. This is not a reprimand, just some info and reminder. Thanks
so is there any way to get the visual voicemail that comes preinstalled on the Dinc free? i want to use it because the GV is laggy on mine but i dont want to pay the 2.99 a month for it.

Can XOOM 3G make Voice call like a mobile phone

Can any one advise this as its not listen in the 3G Specs..
By default no, but there has been talks about possibly getting it to work and a lot of people have success getting Line2 (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.toktumi.line2&feature=search_result) to work on it but requires you to even find the APK somewhere or download it on another android phone and copy the APK file off it.
I am looking for a core 2 Andriod 3.0 with at least a 7.1 or 10.1 screen...
Have to be able to make call.
Any recommendations..
I don't think you're going to find that anywhere.
Good luck with that, last I checked there were no tablets out there (at least in terms of Android 3.0+) that will allow you to make phone calls with them unless you use Skype (or mod it to allow making phone calls nativity.
I have heard that Samsung Galaxy Tab does allow you to make phone calls but I haven't tested myself and don't know if the newer Tab 10.1 (not sure if it's out yet or not) will support the phone features either since the Tab 10.1 will have 3.0.
I'm sure other members on this forums will step in to correct me if I'm wrong at anything I've said here but this is what I've saw so far.
I had some limited success with nettalk and my Google Talk phone number. Could connect with my home phone but my husband said it was very echo-y. I'm wifi only so it can be done. I'm going to try Line 2.
GrooVe IP works
i downloaded groove IP from the market tonite and it seems to work fine, it uses your Google voice number. No monthly fee like Line 2

you have to be logged out of Google talk on your xoom. Also, make sure that in your gv settings you have it set to google chat rather than your mobile number. Not sure if that made any sense, but they explain it step by step in the help section.
is that video calling or just voice?

Not really sure. When I go to google voice on my browser and then click on the setting tab in upper right corner and then choose voice settings, I can then click on the phones tab, that is where I am able to choose google chat.

Dang... I just remembered a long time ago I deleted the google chat from my registered phones list because I didn't think I would ever need to use it. So that would mean I would have to add it back, but... yeah. If I try to add another phone it gives me the name to choose and I need to set a number for it, and I have no idea what the number would be for google chat. Thanks for the quick responses though! I'll try and figure out what to do next. And I have 2 nice bluetooth headsets and they do work great!

The legacy Galaxy Tab does let you use a GSM sim card and allow one to make phone calls as well as access EDGE/3G data...i helped a friend set up his tab a couple of weeks ago and can confirm this....im located in Mumbai, India...and the versions available here do allow the ability to also use it as a phone..
Sent from my Galaxy S using Tapatalk.
i believe its the kernel that is stopping it from possible.
at the momenet, honeycomb is designed to be a tablet OS, hence it didn't include the Phone's feature in the system.
for galaxy tab, (the older one), it running on Gingerbread which a Phone OS, hence it can be easily enable the phone feature.
i believe we need to wait till Ice Cream where it unite Gingerbread and Honeycomb, so that it has the phone's feature in the system and can be enabled easily.
Hey All
Just thought I'd add to this old topic. I have an Australian 3G Xoom, on the American 3.1 update, with my settings pushed back for 3G etc.
Tonight I installed the UAString/SMS mod, so that I could send SMSes (which work perfectly with Handcent, over the Telstra 3G network - just like any mobile phone would do). Then I tried calling my tablet. This also worked perfectly! The call came up, it connected, etc. I answered and this is where we hit trouble. No sound. Either way. So the Xoom doesn't have a microphone/speaker set up for sound during a call. I even tried setting the Xoom on speaker phone, but still nothing.
Any ideas? Not sure if this has been posted about before, and I thought it was pretty exciting, to be making normal calls, and SMSes (there is all this talk about Google Voice, which is useless outside of the US) on the Xoom, and this was very exciting for me.

Google Voice 0.3.0 Galaxy S3 ICS 4.0.4

**UPDATE** I MADE IT WORK
Hey, I'm not sure if there is an answer to this...
I just got my GS3 and love it! However, Google Voice 0.3.0 (ya'll know why I love it) crashes on the ICS 4.0.4 platform. I have been using
Voice+ but I just don't like the call back feature. I have also found a smart gv dialer that automatically decides between gv and the cell carrier based upon certain rules but it still takes a while to complete the calling card style dial through.
YES, I WANT MY CAKE AND TO EAT IT TOO!!! or in this case my ice cream sandwich I know with the unlimited plans floating around most people don't care anymore. I have an OLD OLD OLD plan that is grandfathered in with unlimited data so I don't want to give it up.
My question is, does anyone know of a fix for the app crash that worked fine in 2.2. Or has anyone "recompiled" the app to work in ICS?
Thanks for any help...
THE ANSWER!!!
UPDATE:
Yay! I know it doesn't seem like much for some but those of us still using our trusty f&f plans this is big.
I hope this helps someone out there who found that the old GV 0.3.0 app would hang up and crash as soon as you touched next on the new ICS 4.0.4.
If you want to have the old GV 0.3.0 on ICS 4.0.4, follow these steps:
1. Install newest version of GV from play store.
2. Open GV and touch next but do not choose the displayed gmail account touch USE A DIFFERENT ACCOUNT (this is the only way to get this
to work!)
3. Type in your Gmail address and your password (I know it is the same one that was displayed on the previous page... THIS IS THE ONLY
WAY TO GET IT TO WORK!) Touch sign in.
4. Choose how you want GV to dial and whether or not you want to set up the GV Voicemail.
5. Now, download the old GV 0.3.0 apk here: http://www.freewarelovers.com/androi...oice_0.3.0.apk
Thank you www.freewarelovers.com!!
6. Make sure Install from Unknow Sources is selected under the security tab in your settings menu.
7. Open the Google_Voice_0.3.0.apk file (Look in your apps and touch Downloads to get to the downloaded files)
8. You will get a message that you are replacing an application and that all previous user data will be saved. Touch OK.
9. Touch Install.
Now you should have a working GV 0.3.0 apk that will allow you to call through GV utilizing only one access number place this number in your F&F list and make outgoing calls for free!
*Disclaimer - Although this works you may want to review your TOS to see if this violates your carriers terms for Friends and Family numbers.
If this helped you please show my thanks meter some love!

Gv works fine for me. Are you still stock or on a custom rom? Fresh gv download from play?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
GV works for me as well, I only use it for voicemails but I haven't had any odd issues. Btw, why are you on an older version? The app hasn't been updated since March but it's on build 0.4.2.54. I definitely suggest using the above users' suggestions.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
The reason for gv 0.3.0 is because this is the last version that does not use direct access numbers. It only uses one number for direct dialing out. Which means I can assign the one number to my f&f list.

I know it is fairly moot, I said almost the same thing in my original post. However, some of us don't like change. Also, I only have 500 minutes for my wife and I to share (makes our plan really cheap) but we do have F&F numbers. Generally the callback dialers don't put the outgoing number in the history and it takes 5 seconds or so to connect to the outgoing call (also fairly moot for the use of free calling).

Oh im sorry I think you misunderstood what I meant. The way you describe above didnt work for me, I still got force closed when launching GV after installing the older version. You can search here and see the thread regarding that.
What I meant was, there is a simple way to use the new version of google voice that allows for dialing one number only so that your friends and family list can have that one number in it still. I like the look of the new version personally, I would like a black themed one though so I may look for that later.
A side note, the new plans include unlimited voice anyways so it only really matters if you arent on one of the new plans.

First, what is your problem? Did you not read my posts or just like to come and insert your conjecture wherever you can? I stated I have a CHEAP plan with only 500 minutes. I pay $89/mo for two smartphones with unlimited data, TRY TO BEAT THAT PRICE!
Second, if you merely select the gmail account linked to your phone on the first set-up screen then it wont work. You must use the "use a different account option." Then yes, you manually type in the same gmail address that is more than likely the gmail address you use to link your android phone to google. This is the way that the old google voice app stores your user data and will allow the old gv app to work. Plus, there is no way to make the new gv app stop dialing direct access numbers.
Feel free to offer the way you "know" it can only dial one access number and I would be more than happy to try the new gv app.
UPDATE: Furthermore I have looked at all of your posts concerning this issue and you have not offered a single solution towards the problem nor explained work arounds you tried or how they failed or worked.

you are being way to hostile. I AM IN THE SAME BOAT AS YOU, I have 1400 minutes with a family plan. I am however fortunately on unlimited data. So I dont know what you mean by "insert your conjecture". I will beat it because I pay $150 for 5 lines and have unlimited data on at least 2 of the lines. So I understand the value of friends and family lists.
The "Second , if you merely select... " way doesnt work in all/most cases. I have discussed this in another thread that I had locked because there was no interest in this. The way I came up with works consistently.
I wasnt being confrontational to you, I even apologized that you misunderstood what I was saying. I will say it again too, sorry if what I was saying came across differently then what I said. I have tried your way on multiple phones repeatedly and kept getting force close. That is how I figured this other way that actually works on the new version of the app.
Still no help

Still you offer no solution... prove that you know how!
Or are you still "gauging demand?"

no thanks, for someone being so hostile why would anyone want to share with you. you could of searched and easily seen the post I made a month ago about this and that it works but instead you rack up 7 posts boasting something new and being a jerk, as if no one else has ever thought of this. Theres other users that have pm'd me and I've helped them get this working properly on the new app version.
Right on for getting it to work because thats the goal really. But when you see that it doesnt work on all google voice accounts, you might want to rethink your responses.
p.s. good job searching after posting. No I am not gauging demand, I've helped people in pm because of WHY google voice calls a different out number each time normally.
Unsubscribing from the rapidly declining flame war...
Enough you two! If he does not want to post his solution then he is just trolling
And we don't feed the trolls. Confronting him only continues the senseless posting and helps no one.
I will close this thread if it does not get back to constructive, helpful posts

I actually came to this conclusion as I started to reply the last time and have simply ignored him. My apologies. I am new to forum posting and had no idea what was really out there. I was just surprised and allowed my competitive spirit to get the better of me. I just have a hard time understanding why people make uneducated statements off of half reading a post. There will be no more exchanges between me and him.

Sorry kennyglass, not trolling at all. In fact, I took a second to think about the google voice app functionality and this thread. There is a reason Google changed the app from the old version to new version and why it dials random multiple numbers. So, posting in public how to circumvent that might not be the best idea, especially if we want it to continue to function with one number dialing.
You can look that there is no less then 3 threads related to this subject that I posted over the past couple months.
1. How to check compatibility with older version of google voice app to ICS and the SGS3
2. How google voice apps functions and why one gv account dials a single number while others dial multiple numbers (when setup the same with the same versions of apps)
3. How to get it working and the interest of others wanting to know how to do it with the newest version of the app.
You just have to search before starting a new thread.
This isnt where I just saw a random thread in General and said lets mess with the guy, NO, in fact this has been a couple months in the making where I tested, asked questions, tested more, then figured out how to do it. As I said before, it might not be the best idea to post how to do it on the newest version of the app where it works on every gv account (not just some). I have helped many others already on how to do it privately as I am not sure I want google to discover this and stop it. Surely you know that google did this at the pressure of the Cellular providers?
The kind, not so negative people that want help have figured out that they can simply pm me and I'll help. Also, I wasnt flaming, trolling, nor was I even negative. I complimented the OP for figuring out a way that works for him. I even apologized TWICE for any misunderstanding, but I didnt feel to much like sharing publicly after being told what is your problem or to prove it... would you?
maybe people shouldnt read 'tone' on the internet, reading doesnt always translate to tone well..........
and to note the half read posts comment, it is hard to reply to a post that is edited over and over, hence the ORIGINAL quote, to inform the reader what was being commented on.
Thanks for the PM tillithz. The process was simple and easy and it works.
Since, I came up with a way that works 100% of the time without using an OLD version and I am happily helping others get it working as well, I will link to the ORIGINAL thread so that I dont ruffle any feathers here. You can either use the OP'ers method with the old version of the app or visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31936430#post31936430 for a current method. enjoy!
Trying to use a different google account, and then using my same name and password didn't work. It said that user already existed. So I was forced to sign in using my main google account. Went through the rest of the steps and everything appears to work, I was able to install GV 0.3 and open it up. Although it doesn't appear to actually function. It won't download my new messages, for instance. Any help?
I was able to make this trick work by installing google voice version 0.4.2.54 along with google voice version 0.3.0. Thanks for the great trick! Its very usefulx for those of us on a legacy plan.

Basic Visual Voicemail

So my wife has a Droid Turbo and I contacted VZW about an issue with her voicemail. In the discussion, the rep told me that there is a "Basic" tier of visual voicemail now that is free. He said it should be available on my phone, too.
However, all I've ever seen for the M8 is the $2.99 a month option, which is all I see in the Voice Mail app as well.
Is there any truth to what the rep told me, or was he smoking something?
Not as answer, but I think Google Voice is much more powerful
Edit: This chart says yes but doesn't say how to activate it.

Last time i tried to use Google Voice it stated that it didn't work with my service.
I would love to know how everyone is using Google voice mail services with VZW when i clearly get denied.
Maybe someone could clarify that?

i know it works on the VZW M8 as I recently had to redo it.
Any luck figuring out basic visual voicemail on M8?
Hi There,
DId you ever find an answer to this question? I'm new to Android and just got an M8. I've been trying to figure out how to get a visual voicemail service set up ( I don't need transcription or lots of features- just the ability to see a list of messages and save some/delete some/play some). I also just read about the Verizon Basic Visual Voicemail and it seems perfect for me, but cannot see how to activate on the M8. When I click on the voicemail app, all I see is the 2.99 option ( and free trial). Were you able to figure if you can activate the basic VM on the M8, and, if so, can you please share how?
Thanks so much!

Thank you for your answer. Did you happen to find out if this is a result of the plan, or the phone? I've seen other people say it's possible, but with no explanation how. I still haven't set up voicemail. I see an option of for 2.99 VVM, a free trial for the 2.99 VVM, remind me later, or decline free trial. Did you run into these options as well? What explanation were you given by Verizon ( and how recently)? Thank you so much for responding.
