Is there some easy way to do this, is it possible? I have searched but I did not find any threads about this?
It is an easy fix. Just go into to File Explorer of your choice and navigate to Windows/ Start Menu/ Programs and then find the program yuppie want to rename a then hold your finger on it until it brings up options and one of he options will be to rename.

OKay I know windows but mobile Windows got me....
Have files and program on a memory card, and I want to create a shortcut/link to that file ...how in the hell do I do that.
I want to be able to start my program from say the start menu and going to programs and seeing my icon there...
Is there a tool or registery hack for mobile 6 that might do this?
Thanks
Use either the built in file explorer or something like Resco file explorer,go to the file or exe. you want to make a shortcut of and click and hold your stylus on it,when you get the menu choose "copy",now go to your Windows,Start menu,Programs, scroll to the bottom of the page and click and hold your stylus, choose" create shortcut" from the dropdown menu, you have your shortcut.
Does anyone know how to make the link for "Office Mobile" to appear under programs. It shows up on the Start menu but I cant find out what link it uses so they are grouped together under programs.

Depending on what you want to do, I can see two ways to go about this.
1.) go into Settings/Personal/Menus and uncheck "Office Mobile". This will take the link out of your Start Menu and place it back into "Programs".
2.) if you don't want to remove it from the Start Menu but want to see it under "Programs" as well, use a file explorer and go into \\Windows\Start Menu\ and copy the "Office Mobile" directory into \\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\. This directory contains shortcuts that point to the Office programs, so you're just adding another shortcut.
When flashing the ROM , there is a .provxml file that forces deletion of all other Office links and puts them into the folder on the start menu. If you are familiar with kitchens, the .provxml file is in the SYS/Office folder.
Thank you
Thank you!
Hi all.
I want to make icons in the program folder for applications that aren't installed on the device, but run off of a memory card. For instance, I run putty from the memory card, as it is a standalone .exe file. It would be easier to go to programs and launch it from there, rather than go to a file explorer, direct it to the memory card, and then click on putty.exe. Just want to save myself some time really. I know it can be done because BackupPIM does it.
Thanks for any advice.
PS I tried searching first, but it was a fairly specific thing and so I couldn't see any results. If you find any, shame me for being a noob, and point me in the right direction.
Thanks!
you go to the exe file that you wan to place in the program menu... then copy it.... then go the program folder and paste it as short cut... I dont know whether this will helps you
Shortcuts are text files with a *.lnk extension that you can place in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder. RESCO Explorer can do this for you (Send to Start Menu as Shortcut) or you can do it manually as explained in the WIKI. Hope this helps.

Make sure if you do it by hand you do it plain text
Here is a tutorial.
Thanks guys that worked absolutely perfectly, just copying the file and pasting the shortcut. It's funny to think that you know so much about Windows Mobile, and then realise you don't know something so simple as this!
This will make a huge difference in my day to day life. It may even mean that my partner can now use TomTom (any more than clicking three buttons and she is annoyed, lol). This question and answer section was a great idea by someone, don't know why it didn't happen sooner.
Cheers! Keep up the good work.
Thanks
You guys are REALLY helping us noobs out allot. This worked like a charm.
One day we might have the "smarts" to do the same for others
By the way, I suggest you create a cab (you can use WinCECabManager) to have the *.lnk installed in your device so that everytime you flash a rom or hard reset you can just intall it.. I create a cab for all programs running from the storage card. one cab and i have all the shortcuts i need in my programs menu
Dear nir36
Can you explain that how we can create a cab of shortcuts the programs stored in mem card
Best regards
Get Quickcab 2.0 (hacking forum). It's pretty self explanatory to use, but when you make the cab, make sure in the name field that you name it 'mycabname.cab'. If you don't put in the extension, it doesn't work (at least not for me, lol).
The easiest way to set up the cab is to put quickcab in your c: folder, then inside that folder copy your start menu from your device. Delete all the links in the start menu you don't need, then just send the individual folders with the links into the \windows\start menu\programs directory shown in quickcab. Select 'no uninstall' so the cab doesn't go into the installed programs list. Having the named folders on your pc makes things much faster. You don't have to create the directory for the cab, and everything's organized properly. Do not create an empty folder in the cab file-this will give you an error, and a stupid command window will open, leaving you very disappointed.
All the new ROMS have the ability to hold and move the start menu items. I dont know if its possible but there needs to be the ability to hold and move a shortcut into a folder already present and create new folders from right there as well. Its annoying to have to go into total commander and organize all the shortcuts every time i install something. so if i could just press start and do it, that would be really cool.
Thanks.
If you can't do it, you can't do it. I've never used a rom with the drag'n'drop feature myself, but this is stuff that comes from microsoft. Your chef has no control over it. Is it really that hard to move a link with total commander? Here is my recommendation: create a shortcut to the start menu\programs directory, and put it in the root of your device directory. It makes it a lot easier to get to the start menu in total commander (or file explorer), because you don't have to open up \windows.
What the heck, here is the shortcut. Just change the extension from .txt to .lnk. You'll find it makes things much easier.
Cheers
Thanks Farmer Ted for the tip!
I hate opening up the windows folder as there are so many items and it takes around 6 seconds - every time I open it.
I never thought to create a shortcut for programs!
If I have the shortcut in my memory card, even after flash it would make it faster to navigate to program files..
Anyway, I know I said it the long way, but thank you!
Hello,
first time posting So forgive any silly questions or any repeated ones.
But my question is this:
I got my mom's old HTC Touch HD. I have copied and pasted some applications from the storage card and then did a hard reset. I then copied some applications back to my program files:
*) closeApps, clear temp, etc.
*) Resco Brain Games
*) HD Tweak
Now these programs actually work if I go through the file explorer. But I would like to 'add' these application to the start menu shortcuts. But they do not show up on the 'all programs'. And I understand the concept of it. similar to when you 'install' something on your computer as opposed to simply unzip something and run it. I believe it has something to do with registry entries or rather lack thereof.
So... How do I get these applications to show up on 'All programs' or at the very least on the 'shortcut' menu (when you click the start button).
let me know if i have not been very clear.
2 ways.
1) Find the cab and just run install them. Most of what you listed is freeware.
2a) Find the program's exe in \Program Files\
2b) "Right click" and choose Copy
2c) Browse to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
2d) "Right click" and choose Paste Shortcut.
2e) Rename the shortcut.
