Facebook notifications

ok coming from a blackberry to Android I have to say the Facebook app sucks when ever I get a notification ,yes it appear but it doesn't notify me on a comment and when I do open it it opens in the web browser. what's up with this its just stupid, the blackberry app was much better than this it would open the Facebook app when you opened the notification. is there any plan In the pipe line to improve this or even any mods I can use to improve this? sorry for any grammar typed on my phone in under 2 mins LOL.

There are some 3rd party facebook apps. Babbler (paid and Lite) and Bloo. I haven't really tried them so I don't know how good they are.

that's the perfect app takes a little setting up but if your having problems just ask me and ill be more than happy to give you a hand

Which app did you try? I downloaded Babbler Lite after replying and I like it much better than the official app. I haven't decided if it's worth getting the paid version yet though.

yeah im using babble lite its much better than normal Facebook I think I might buy full version just to support the devs who have made such a great app

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll end up buying this app. It's definitely the best FB app I have used.

ok well I did it thru the browser I had to go to the application thru Facebook on the browser (just search babbler on Facebook) and accept it and all then go to the application on your device and accept some more and then it all worked hope this help. they really need to sort this out this is the only big downfall with this app. anyway any problems anyone just pm me

Actually, I didn't have to go through the browser at all. I think the issue is that you have to scroll all the way to the bottom on the screen that seems to be just sitting there. At the bottom you will see the allow button.

yeah you just need to wait till people begin to use android and it will begin to get the updates, i mean look at iphone apps there amazing cause that is THE thing atm, and blackberries also have a good following so the apps for that are normally ok, but as android is getting bigger and better ( imho its alredy the best) the apps will come rolling in like they did for the iphone/ipad

Agreed, I wish there was some way to just port the Iphone FB app over to Android lol

Bloo 1.5 W/ Facebook Chat

i just want to start off by saying that "Bloo" is one of the best app for facebook out there. the developer had decide to either let bloo die or make it open source.
please respect hes work and show support if you want "bloo" to survive.
visit hes website "fbandroid.wordpress.com" or on the market. and let him know how you feel.
By the way he has release a "Preview" of the new Bloo 1.5 With Facebook Chat. (REMEMBER IS NOT THE OFFICIAL RELEASE) everything seems to be working fine for me. but there should be some bugs.

Absolutely, I have posted on his blog before to tell him how good Bloo is. I really hope he does keep it going. Like you say, the official app is pretty poor.

I have to, every time he announces a new release. I also paid for Bloo about a yr ago and have used it ever since.
I wouldn't mind him goin open source and see what other devs can do with Bloo.

Common issue with apk's. Typically means that the server is presenting the web client with an incompatible MIME type and Android is really picky about those.
Install Astro file manager and enable "Enable browser download" in its preferences and it will likely work. What's happening is that Astro tells the system that it can handle virtually any MIME type so the system will let you download it.

Not as clean and fast as the official app, but a good effort nonetheless. I can't figure out how to "like" something, any ideas?

i love the bubble style chat on blow wish i can use the exact same one for sms and no i don't mean like handcent i like exactly how cartoonish bloo is.

Ok so I am confused about the chat feature... is it just enabling it in our browsers or is there something I am missing?

When you start up Bloo, you'll see it in your notification bar just go to it and it should start up the FB chat .. tested it out and BEAUTIFUL!!
BTW, aalopez10, where did you find this? I've been looking for it and couldn't find it lol

Sick thanks! It was only doing the chat enable/disable thing in the notification bar before but its working now.

one of the developers have release a public beta but its not the official yet so you wont find it anywhere in the market or anywhere at the moment.
one of the developer have said that he would make a facebook fan club called "SAVE BLOO" and it will have the PREVIEW APK that i provide for people to try it out.
hes not sure if he wants to continue working on this app due to the time it takes him as he only does it on the side besides hes real job. so he wants to make hes final decision either to leave bloo die or keep working on it.
support hes blog. and join the fan club on facebook so we can keep bloo alive and received more features for bloo and facebook chat and show to the "OFFICIAL FACEBOOK APP" that they suckkkk on updating there official app.

Anyone having issues with Bloo 1.5 and Froyo? It seems like my chat doesnt go through sometimes or i have to log into chat twice... just seeing how everyone else was doing with this app...

remember that anyone who downloaded froyo manually, based on google is was a "Froyo Built test" It was not the final froyo 2.2. so that means theres some bugs. and the apps is nothing to do with the development of froyo because is not the final realease. when google realease the final froyo 2.2 and apps are updated to work for 2.2 everything should work flawless.
****all APPS have to be updated to work for FROYO so BLOO has nothing to do with it at the moment till its updated. but for now hold on and wait because "froyo" is still new OS and developers have to update there apps to work for "froyo 2.2".*** but for now enjoy

I am getting FACEBOOK error?? on FROYO

My stock froyo facebook app was working perfect and today will not fetch data. Even after I cleared it and re-logged in.
Any one else having problems??

I think this is a problem on their servers (Facebook) as I have the same issue on 5.0.7.1 and from what I have found it randomly fixes itself after a few days somehow in most cases. First time it happened to me as well.
The message that I get is something like "An error had occurred while fetching data [null]"
Do you get a similar message?

Doesn't seem to be wanting to fetch data. It's a facebook issue. I really do hope a new optimised app for froyo will be out soon, and bring more goodies to the table. This app is starting to feel old (not to mention the bugs)

Yeah, defiantly seems to be a server issue on their side, nothing much you can really do other then try touch.facebook.com and use that as a bookmark and place it on your home screen or something.

Same here and I'm on 5.0.6 and I also think it's a facebook issue.
Side note: This maybe old but anyone seen the option to 'download facebook for Nexus One' at the bottom of the mobile site? it just takes me to a blank page.

Yeah same issue as of a few hours ago on the stock leaked FroYo. Glad it's not just me, lol. The weird thing is the widget is updating!

Yeah it must be a facebook issue. I am having the same error on my froyo nexus one, and my 2.1 htc hero. Very wierd that the widget still updates. Come one facebook, release a REAL facebook app for android.

Possibly because of the new privacy changes.

Whew - someone else having the same problems!
I installed Froyo last night and Facebook worked fine for the first few hours, but starting late last night it's been having the "Fetching" problems.
Go figure?

Seriously hope this improves FB for Android.
Its doo doo balls right now.

Doing the same thing for my girlfriend and a friend with Droids so it's Facebook.
I surmise there's an update coming soon for the official app that uses the new Facebook Android APIs including the new facebook graph API.
Let's hope they include chat soon too...

Not getting facebook notifications

Im new to android, as a matter of fact I returned my iPhone to get the captivate and i thought i setup my facebook notifications up right but aparently im not getting my reply to comments etc, i setup the facebook widget on my homescreen but not getting anything...any thoughts?

Only thing I can think of is make sure you havent used a task killer to kill any facebook tasks. If you do that then the facebook widgets stop working I believe.

What kind of facebook notifications are you talking about?
I use the "Feeds and Updates" widget that comes stock on the Captivate and it seems to work ok. Sometimes you have to get it to manually update though.

As far as I know and Ive seen this posted elsewhere with different devices Andriod does not have instant notifications ala IPhone notifications. I found this out when my Fiancee got the EVO 4G. The only way (for now) to get those notifications is to have a text message sent IIRC...

Yes, there are no push notifications on android as there are on iphone. Some apps you can set to go out and actively check for things every few minutes, such as sports scores, emails, twitter updates, etc. But then that obviously uses more battery power. But no push notifications (except for google applications like gmail and google voice).

Those in the whatsapp beta for Android should update your software ASAP, because they just put in push functionality for everyone with a 2.2 phone. Is this the only software so far not from google to actually use the 2.2 push function? (C2DM and the likes do not count)

how is it different to what its doing now?? i shall update soon after i finish charging

It doesn't poll like the old version anymore, and after some testing, I am getting my messages a little faster, because there is usually a 10-20 second delay when the app is sleeping, but this time it's like a 2-3 second after my friend sends me the text via whatsapp.

ahh right so there would be better battery life too??

Is the beta app available? Have they mentioned a release date?

Whatsapp is probably one of the most useful apps for someone coming from a blackberry and misses BBMs. The difference is the speed but the main upside is that it's crossplatformed. Also the app is good for people that travel and have an open wifi spot. Free messaging to friends back home is well worth it.

Nope, but it should be within the next few months, it's already very stable other than some of the extra stuff like backgrounds, etc.

Yeah, since I have quite a few friends with an iphone and BB, I'm able to send them messages via my data plan.

AppBrain's Fastweb Installer uses C2DM too for installation of applications from your PC browser.
Anything that uses C2DM is immediately interesting, I'll check it out!

I believe Pingchat uses push notifications. Works well on my Desire.

It's not using the same type of 2.2 push unfortunately.

EDIT: also seems like there are sometimes big delays between messages. whatsapp keeps disconnecting in the new version

I had to revert back to an older verison I believe. Newest version yesterday kept logging me off also and messages were stalled until I sent one out then they'd all come in.
Looked on the changelog and they took off the "Push Notifications"
Currently running: v1.0.6138

I'm using whatsapp on 2.1. working pretty well so far. ... thinking of getting 2.2 but no sense UI ROM for hero yet.

Aww man, they removed push notifications via C2DM and the reason was they need to give google a quota? I have no idea what that means.

Yepp.... just downloaded the APK from the link provided above... You can download and install it, but when it asks for your display name, you will get a message that says "Unauthorized beta user, DO NOT E-MAIL US", or something like that.
That's too bad because I loved it on my BB to chat with my iPhone friends, you would think that it would be easier and faster to create an app for Android and it would already be out in the market !!

it works!! everyone gets that message just wait till tommorrow and try again and it will work. Heaps of people have had success using this method. dont give up so easily

updated yesterday and they've been approved for the push notification via GOOGLE's c2dm.
Only thing i've noticed is that the app unlike iPhone's version doesn't time out while it's in the background. So it seems like you're always logged in. This could be corrected by a task manager app to kill the app but once you receive a new message it auto logs you on and double check marks the message as read.
