I can't seem to find any way to take screen shots of my Android phone - on the phone. I've found a 14 step way to do it though a PC and with Android SDK... is there any apps that can do this, directly on the phone?

pic me works pretty well
but you need to have a rooted device
Non-Rooted users can use "Screen capture" 2 versions: 2.1 eclair and 2.2 froyo. Only down side is that you need to install a file via ADB from computer. I got it to work after a few hours of trial and error lol.
"Shoot Me" from the market is free and super easy to use ... just shake to take a screen cap.

and ScreenCapture.apk / ScreenCaptureService.apk from Froyo roms. (push it via adb or rootexplorer)

if you've got it, just press back+home and you should be able to take a screenshot.
+1 for "ShootMe"
Great app, easy to use!
Not sure if this applies to only 2.2, but Android has its own screenshot feature built in for developers. To go to mine, it's Settings -> Applications -> Development, then check off "Take a screenshot instead". A short press of the power button will take a screenshot instead.

as long as you have the android sdk downloaded you can use the ddms.bat in the tools folder to take screen shots with out having to root your phone
Enable USB Debugging then need to open up the DDMS application from within the "tools" folder in the Android SDK's main folder. After DDMS launches, select your handset from the menu on the left (it should be the only device listed). You might see an error message, but the debug tool should be loaded. Then, click CTRL-S on your keyboard. This will bring up the "Device Screen Capture" interface. From here, a static image is captured from what is appearing on your handset. You can save the image (nicely defaulted as PNG) and then refresh to your heart's content to grab updated or different screenshots from your phone.
That's it!
oh yea i forgot about that
cant get the lockscreen clear on mine i have the full theme clear except for the lock..i even tried the lockscreen alone but nothing
you still didnt get it dammm
no i still dont get it lol i have tried alot of times i just got the full theme working but not the lockscreen which is weird :S is there any way to manually do it?

Force HQ Videos
Download Videos
Active downloads can be viewed by pressing Menu at the main youtube screen, then click on Misc and select Downloads. Save folder can be edited in the Rollemod Settings (also select Misc in Menu).
To download videos, simply press menu while you're in the player - select misc and press "Download Video". A dialog will pop up allowing you to chose the quality of the video of your desire.
I am planning on adding more features. But this should do it for now.

No, but it works on current Froyos, so there shouldn't be a problem to create your mod for people using Froyo already.
EDIT:
But I understand that modding of YouTube may be hard cause of obfuscation, so you just don't wanna work with too many versions of it.
Google does not update the Youtube.apk that often, I'm pretty sure it's final, or at least close to final. We onlt had 2 Youtube.apks during éclair's lifecycle... we have Froyo's Youtubr.apk... unodexed by default.
I think it's doable, and it is why wait? Thanks for your work, though!

First of all, i love your app and it works great so far on froyo on my nexus one
I just have one question though...
After installing this app, can i delete the other (the official) youtube app from my phone?? or does this app/mod relies on the official youtube app to function correctly?

you should post a changelog so we know whats new =) Great job!
Sweet!
Is it possible to make it so that it keeps what you've streamed/buffered in memory while still watching the video?
Like, sometimes i cant hear something clearly or missed something in the video so i drag the bar back but it has to re-buffer when i do that -__- it would be nice if it kept it in memory temporarily so it would just play smooth instead of having to start downloading all over again when i rewind
???
Can i know where the downloaded videos are geting saving
is there still support for this mod?
what he said ^
Can someone repost on a different site; I'm having trouble getting either of the versions... plzNthx

I'm Not sure. I didn't test it on AOSP. It just changes the action of what the search button does.
Useful for anyone also misled by the naming of the thread, LaunchKey is an app on the market which lets you bind the long-press of the search key to any app, including camera. It is useful because it lets you keep the search key for searching, although not voice searching, and the camera app as well.
In Market: $0.96
On XDA: Free
Using the search key instead of the screen to take the pic sounds REALLY useful though, must try.
Maybe a better thread name? or does this also remap to launch the camera app?
Orrr.......
Or get FX Camera Zoom... which allows you to remap to any button also does voice activation for the camera... plus more features... HD etc the list goes on

Anyone know if there is a shortcut to taking screenshots?
Without having to root and use drocap or shootme. (that's assuming they even work when rooted, which there's been one or two saying it doesn't.)
i'm rooted and neither dropcap or shootme work on my xoom.
Only one way to take screencaps...SDK, works both rooted and non but obviously takes a little knowledge/reading up on. But its not as hard as duplicating Grandma's gravy and biscuits so don't fear too much.

Kinda sad it requires root or being plugged into a PC to take screen caps. Might be the wrong place to bring it up but I don't think I'm the only one thats kinda irked about this.

I know I payed 800 dollars for my Xoom. **** should be better. Media player, well Gallery in general, and this, and more. But I think I'm going to give google till after their first Honeycomb update.
Lets just see what they think is worth fixing first.
This is me assuming screenshots would be built into the os.
I don't think it has to do with the Xoom hardware.
But I could be wrong.
So when has screen shots ever been built into the OS? Don't know what the big surprise is. Yes it would be nice, but eventually a root and simple software solution will present itself.
Now that we have a tablet OS which should be moving us closer to netbook replacement, it would be a nice feature to have without the need to root and have an external application. I take screenshots on my Windows machine every single day. We need to stop having a phone OS mentality and starting thinking tablet OS which is different. So yes, that would be a nice feature to have built in to Honeycomb.

Given the limited amount of hardware toggles on the Xoom, how would you suggest ScreenCapping be implemented? I'm not being condescending, I'm curious as to your thoughts.
ShootMe takes your cap by shaking your device. This seems logical because it wouldn't regurie anything as far as a UI.
If we ever receive extension support for the browser it seems adding a button to the toolbar would work, however that would limit caps to the browser only.
Anyone else have any ideas?

I am not a UI designer but there are probably many ways to do this. Long press screen, Print Screen in keyboard, add another system button to the taskbar on bottom, etc. In Windows, you just press the print screen button to copy to the clipboard. It can't be that difficult to implement something similar in Honeycomb. Once in the clipboard, you paste it to whatever application has focus. UI designers for Honeycomb can certainly figure out something this simple.

Correct, it was a Samsung add-on, not in the base OS.
Don't get me wrong, I think it would be a great thing for google to just throw in there and obviously it is very doable, and I do not know why it is not just part of the OS already.

The inability to take screenshots without root or the sdk is a known issue to Android users.
The ability was added in Gingerbread. (I'm not allowed to post links yet but go to phandroid.com and search for a post by Kevin Krause on March 1st, 2011 at 7:35 am for details.) Samsung is the only dev to make use of the option so far (afaik) and only on gingerbread devices.
If you want an app that takes screenshots without root or the SDK, the option is there for you to develop such an app if you don't want to wait for someone else to do it.
Oh, and be sure to post a link to your apk for us when you're done. Thanks.

The Galaxy Tab has screen capture right out the box. Hold the back button and press the power button and it takes a screen capture and even puts it in the folder named screen capture. Just sayin.
That is one thing Apple did get right on the iPhone and iPad: press and hold the "Home" button at center bottom, then press and release the "power" button on top.
This made it really easy to create documentation at work... Android could have used a combination of one of the volume buttons and the power button. which would come in handy when either creating documentation on how to do something or for instructing users to send a screen shot of an error they are seeing...

I taught they require root? But I think root is needed to perform any type of screengrab.
But out of those two options shootme would be my personally recommendation, (drocap put an icon in the status bar and has a tended to cause a 'su permission granted' bubble which gets caught in the screenshot)
