New Desire... Orange ROM! Generic WWE HTC ROM anyone? - Desire Android Development

Hi folks,
I've just come over from WinMo, so I'm pretty familiar with the concept of flashing, but not on an Android phone.
If anyone has any advice as to how I can get a generic/standard HTC Desire ROM to replace the Orange ROM that's come installed on my nice new phone, please let me know. At the moment, I've no root access, Goldcard or anything like that.
If the general concensus is that it's a bit too soon to start flashing then please let me know.
Many thanks in advance!
rich.

hi. at present whilst the desire has been successfully rooted, the process is not complete. therefore flashing a new rom is not an option at present. cheers Andy
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

Sorry, but that's wrong. There should be no issues flashing a generic rom over the branded ones..
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653490
seems people are doin it to get rid of the t-mobile branding, so should work the same for orange.
(need root for custom roms)

sorry, a bit quick. You do need a goldcard, but reckon you can follow one of the guides to get one here in the forums
edit2***
here's your goldcard guide:
android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/305746/updating-to-1-15-405-4-genericifying-your-t-mo-handset/

Create goldcard, flash generic rom. Done.

You guys are awesome. Never ceased to be amazed by this place.
Cheers!
If I have the bottle to go through with it and risk bricking my brand new phone I shall let you know how I get on!

I would create a backup of the orange ROM in case something goes wrong and you need Orange to replace it. Although I had flashed my SE C905 with generic fw and orange didnt say anything when they replaced it but best be safe then sorry.

n00b question, but do you make the Goldcard on the PC with the phone plugged in? the instructions aren't clear...have come flashing cooking WinMo ROMs on the HD2 to Android

Not sure what instructions you used but have a look at this:

I'm going to re-flash my Orange Desire this weekend; how would I go about creating a backup of the Orange ROM?

You can't yet. Not until the device is rooted. Then Nandroid will work on it!

Ah OK, cheers for the clarification. From everything I've read (both on here and over at MoDaCo) the flash process seems pretty safe/straight-forward, so fingers crossed I'll be OK! The Orange junk on my phone needs to go! I want GTalk back!

It's very straight forward. Go for it!

Successfully flashed my new Desire with Generic rom using Goldcard. Phone was on Orange UK, I bought an unlock code, applied it, it said Device Successfully Unlocked but it was still locked to Orange. After flashing the phone, reapplied unlock code and now I have an unlocked HTC Desire. The only thing that reminds me of Orange is the label on the back cover of the phone, but I can live with that until I can find one on ebay or somewhere.

Does that really work?

sugar cube worked on my old HTC Magician a few years ago..but then the paint was on metal.

I had no idea the desire has been rooted! what is the procedure???

Will this work on A8183 versions of the Desire? ie. The Telstra delivered Australian model with 850Mhz?
Update: Yep it sure does work! Quietly brilliant....

It's not been rooted. The only thing you can do at the moment is flash a generic unbranded rom. No custom roms or operator-specific roms are available yet.

The Orange UK ROM you downloaded is likely the one I put together from a dump of my device when I first had it (also from Orange UK). It is missing a radio as at that time the radio version that shipped on my device (1.27.12.29) had never been released and was not available from a dump.
However, that seems to have changed now and you can download the 1.27.12.29 radio ROM from the wiki;
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_Radio
This, combined with my ROM rebuild, will give you an Orange UK TyTN II as it was shipped. Orange UK are shipping later radio versions these days, however using my ROM and the radio linked above will give you an original shipping setup equal to how my phone arrived with me on day one.
EDIT: the link for that radio appears dead (boo!), so 1.27.12.32 is the closest match currently - that should give you a working device with sound etc. I assume you have sim unlocked this phone? If not, you will need to do this before flashing this radio.
many thanks
i will give it a go and let you know how it went. i have had the phone unlocked i paid orange for the code. many many thanks

Hi, Ive got an Orange TyTn 2 and I find the keyboard often misses out button presses, so I find that a space or a letter hasn't appeared when I get to the end of the sentence. Does this happen with your TyTn 2? Cheers

Try disabling xt9.
EDIT: this post isn't really ROM development related. It's general at best. And it seems to be getting off topic.
The OP was the good old, I have no sound on my Kaiser, which is an older problem than me and has been asked a million times before.

Official rom update for rogers from HTC

ok seems theres an official update from HTC for our rogers phones anyone try it yet http://www.htc.com/ca/SupportDownloadList.aspx?p_id=270&act=sd&cat=2
Ooooh, eeenteresting....
Code:
Why is updating the software on your device recommended?
The ROM software update posted below provides several key enhancements for your HTC Dream:
-Improves the overall device functionality and stability
-Enables correct SMS timestamp [B]<<<<<<<<<<!!!!![/B]
-Enables Chinese character display for POP3 HTML Emails
-Corrects E-mail client exchange Issues
yes can it be timestamp fix heaven? lol.. just wondering if this is going to work for rooted or non 32a magic.. or both
The update pages says "HTC Magic (Rogers)" but when I stick in my S/N it says: Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device. Bummer since my phone and box say HTC Rogers on them.

i just got the S/N from the box as I didnt want to remove the battery.
yeah i noticed it also.. comes up when you select Rogers Magic.. but if you noticed in the notes.. some of which also posted above.. it says enhance dream isssues... will try my s/n and let you know
you can get the files from the rogers support page.. i used this link to get there http://www.androidincanada.ca/news/update-rogers-htc-dreammagic-android-timestamp-problem/
I have the direct link here:
http://downloads.rogers.com/wireless/products/htc/magic/RUU_Sapphire_Rogers_WWE_2.17.631.2_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
Be careful as this update will more than likely install a Perfect SPL on your device. You will need to re-root your device after installing this. Could be a painful process.
I'm going to wait for somebody who knows what they're doing to remove the important bits from this update.
Cheers!
my thoughts exactly.. the way they have been putting the perfect spl on devices that didnt have it.... I tried it ( im running Jacheroski 2.7.4r2) and it didnt even recognize my phone. I was reading on the HTC site that you need HTC sync software first... thought that was for hero.. anyways.. have to run out for a bit will check back later... on a side note.. if this actually unroots your phone and puts the rogers apps back on .. couldnt someone tweak this up date and make it a restore rom?
I can confirm that it installs a 'Perfected SPL'.
Version 1.33.0010 to be exact.
Proceed with caution! I read through some posts on how to root these devices with 1.33.0010 and I really wouldn't want to have to do that.
I haven't installed the ROM image, and I won't.
After running the RUU (before you even click Next or accept the terms), you can find rom.zip in "%TEMP%\{F313B180-FF83-48A8-B925-E14312A5AFCB}\{50F2F878-636A-496F-A7CB-544C067E0C4B}"
I'm sorry if this isn't being asked in the correct place but as this thread is already discussing the new ROM update I was hoping that someone here could please tell me whether or not this ROM update would SIM relock a SIM unlocked Rogers Magic phone?
I am asking because I should be recieving my new unlocked Rogers Magic (that I am going to be using on AT&T) any day now and while I wouldn't mind updating it with the new ROM I really don't want to go through the expense and hassle of having to SIM unlock it when part of the reason I bought the one I did on ebay is because it is already SIM unlocked. Thanks in advance for any information on this.

I really doubt it will. I don't know exactly how SIM unlocking works, but this update shouldn't touch those settings.
Why run the Rogers update with all of it's restrictions and crappy software? Download and install any one of the dozens of better ROMs available in this forum.
First let me admit that I am a total NOOB with Android and even the idea of flashing custom ROMs on cellphones (the phone I am upgrading from is an 8525 and had an 8125 before that and the only time I remember flashing either was updating the official ROM to 6.0 off of HTC's site). I guess this makes me a little behind the times but my idea of customizing was installing programs like Pockets Plus and then Mobile Shell 3 because I'm not a programmer and was a little intimidated about cooking the ROMS.
That said I was thinking of running the stock ROM atleast for a little while to get an idea of just what I like and don't like about it and then being more knowledgeable when I research what ROM I should upgrade to? Is there a list of the ROMs and what their customizations are for the Rogers version? Do you have any advise on what ROM's I should look at and what the differences are?
I'm afraid that I will be somewhat overwhelmed with the number of choices to be made. Besides, I use my phone on my job so I can't risk it having issues or having to reinstall everything on a regular basis so continually flashing it with new ROM's as they come out may not be a logical solution for me. I think I'd rather end up with something stable and able to use all the programs, etc that I need for work and play. Anyways, any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Your best bet would be to start off by running the ROM that it comes with. If you've got problems with timestamps in the ROM, use a program called ChompSMS.
Read this forum, look for information on the 32A HTC Magic. That's the version you are getting. Learn as much as you can without changing your phone at all. Once you've got enough information start by 'rooting' your phone, then play around with some custom ROMs.
Lots to learn around here. Make sure you use the search function.
The following link was made by skittleguy to try to combine all compatible roms for Rogers. There have been quite a few changes to most of these ROMS but you can go to each original thread and read up on different ROMs and their advantages and disadvantages. I believe most of the original threads are being updated from time to time, but you can always just do a search for the name of the ROM.

Personally if you want one that is stable and has all of its features working, I would go with Cyanogen's ROM v4.0.2 with Amon_RA'sv1.0.1 kernal. It is based of off MyTouch 3G. The link is below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544854
Having said that, there is one feature that I miss on this ROM, which is the smart dialpad.

This is an official Released ROM by HTC.
I am not really sure of what Lang is inside of here. I would assume WWE, but not sure, might even be for UK.
It is an offical HTC Release though, signed and everything, so flashing this, you will more then likely loose Root, unless there is another way around it. I really am not sure, but this will serve has a warning.

there has been no luck getting the orange rom so far, but there if a thred on here or madaco where someone still has their phone on the orange branded and if he gets told how to do it he will rip the rom
Any changelog? I've a 1.21.405 (no rooted) and I dont know if this version will be better than mine.
BR.
I will look for an Orange UK ROM.
I didn't realize there was a need for one.
I have severe problems with 3G i thought flashing back to original might solve things. Want to see if the device itself might have problems.
orange demand
yea, man HUGE demand for a UK Orange rom througout all desire forums. P.S in Norfolk, UK i have a hard time getting 3G on any rom, Gues the signal sucks but keep in mind that orange and t-mobile are merging and you will be able to use t-mobile signal soon for no extra charge.
P.S unlocked my phone today WOO!
hello guys.
i want to ask sumthing.
this ROM is official right? so if i want to flash it to my desire, do i need to root my phone or just simply run the exe?
thanx

[Q] May I ask for an advice?!

Hi all, guys!
First of all I want to say thanks to all who get this great forum updated with ROMs, guides and tutorials! I've read all of the most interesting threads and I'm ready to put my hands on my Desire S I'm waiting!
I need only a little advice. The Desire S I'm waiting is branded by my national operator. No SIM lock or other, only some personalizations.
I think I'll debrand it at light speed, flashing an official ROM and then proceed to unlock it / root it.
And here I need ur advice: do you think it's better to flash an old official ROM to unlock and S-OFF with Revolutionary, or to flash the latest and unlock with the HTC tool?! What are the benefits to have S-Off / Unlock VS S-On / Unlock?
Thank you in advance!

If you unlock with HTCDev HTC may notice what you did to your phone. So there is a bigger chance of voiding your warranty.
Also if you s-off you will have much more possibilities for customizing your phone. And everything you do will be much more easy (flashing ROM, changing radio, kernel etc.)
So I would really recommend you not to use htcdev but to s-off your phone by yourself

But if this is the first time you're doing all this, i suggest a few days worth of reading about RUUs, CID, Goldcard, Misc_version, etc, before you contemplate changing branded phone firmware. You may not need it, but knowing this stuff is like having a condom - It's better to have one and not need it, rather that need one and not have it!
Thank u for replies!!!

Make sure you read the sticky thread in development section. It really helped me a lot when i started. As for roms to enjoy your mobile phone since its new i would suggest not to go to ics yet since some stuff are not functional. Go for 2.3.7 roms mostly. Welcome to Android side and hf.

I know ICS for Saga is not fully functional (yet?! ;D ;D) and a little buggy.
Hope developers may find better solutions when ICS will be official for Saga!
In my case I'd like first of all to debrand my phone and then try some custom ROM (I've read great things about MIUI or Runnymede based ROMS).
By the way I'm not really new in Android experience. As you can see in my signature, thank to great people, I use Android 2.3 in my reallllllly old Polaris since 2 years (with some problems, obviously, but nothing really bad!)! I think that these are the things that make great Android and this group of developers!!!!
Thanks!!!

HTC Desire 7060 - Experience? or Tips?

Hello,
I purchased a HTC Desire 7060 today in China, Shanghai. As far as my research goes, its an asian version of the HTC One. A bit cheaper though.
Now, since the phone has a "china unicom" tempered firmware on it, i would like to check if its possible to get any kind of customized firmware on it. I was hopeing to get a good and CLEAN firmware on the phone.
Could anyone please point me in the right direction. I already got it done to "unlock" the phone. But am stuck now with finding a Recovery file or something.
Hope for any advise. Thank you.

Sol if you can find a way to pull recovery.img and boot.img from your phone it would be great because I do not habe any chance yet to get this files...
Maybe you can try online nandroid backup from the playstore?!
I was working on getting international contents to blinkfeed.
Whats your HBOOT version? I'm on 0.31.0000
regards
helle
