Since is quite annoying scrolling in Menus when there are more than 6 tiles/options, I've managed to increase the number of tiles in HTC Menus from 6 rows to 8 in portrait mode (and from 4 rows to 5 in landscape mode) decreasing the height of tiles from 42 pixels to 34 (finger-friendly enough as you see in images below ).
Previous Important Note
Although HTC Menus should work ONLY under Manil2D, you can work with HTC Menus WITHOUT Manila2D (instead of WM Menus by default) installing the file UpL HTCMenus NO M2D.cab provided below. To restore to default WM Menus, just uninstall this cab.
All credits about this tweak in this post:
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6641868&postcount=2
Instructions
Install UpL HTCMenus 8Rows BLUE QVGA.cab if you want blue selection colour or UpL HTCMenus 8Rows DEFAULT QVGA.cab for dark-brown default selection colour.
If you don't like the final result (and you didn't back up your modified registry keys/files before ), you can restore your registry keys and Menu settings by default installing UpL HTCMenus 6Rows Restore BLUE QVGA.cab in blue colour, or UpL HTCMenus 6Rows Restore DEFAULT QVGA.cab in dark-brown default colour.
Important Note
I tested it ONLY in my HTC Mega device (QVGA screen) and works like a charm. I don't know how it works in other QVGA devices and, of course, I'm not responsible of whatever happens in other devices or resolutions.
-----------------------------------------------
In the following post there is a brief explaination of the tweak/mod I've done.
Explaination
The Tweak/Mod consists mainly in:
-Resize HTCMenus.png height from 124pixels (1+42+42+42+1=124pixels) to 104pixels (1+34+34+34+1=104pixels) [or 80,9% (34pixels tile/42pixels tile=0,809)] in Windows folder
-Edit and change the registry keys as follows below:
Code:
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\HTC\HTCMenus","ItemHLTile"="10,[COLOR="Red"]34[/COLOR],0,0,11,22,33,44,55,66,77,88"
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\HTC\HTCMenus","ItemTile"="10,[COLOR="Red"]33[/COLOR],[COLOR="Red"]70[/COLOR],0,22,33,44,55,66,77"
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\HTC\HTCMenus","ItemClickHL"="10,[COLOR="Red"]34[/COLOR],[COLOR="Red"]35[/COLOR],0,11,22,33,44,55,66,77,88"
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\HTC\HTCMenus","ItemHL"="0,[COLOR="Red"]34[/COLOR],0,0"
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\HTC\HTCMenus","ItemHW"="220,280,[COLOR="Red"]33[/COLOR],[COLOR="Red"]34[/COLOR]"
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\HTC\HTCMenus","LandscapeMaxItemCount"=[COLOR="Red"]5[/COLOR]
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\HTC\HTCMenus","PortraitMaxItemCount"=[COLOR="Red"]8[/COLOR]
where you change only the following registry values:
From 4 to 5 tiles in Landscape mode
From 6 to 8 tiles in Portrait mode
From 41 to 33 pixels size
From 42 to 34 pixels size
From 43 to 35 pixels size
From 86 to 70 because there starts the 3rd. row (white tiles) in default "HTCMenus.png" (43pixels+43pixels=86pixels) that is (35pixels+35pixels=70pixels) in new "HTCMenus.png"
-And finally, replace your new "HTCMenus.png" in Windows folder after a backup of your previous "HTCMenus.png" to restore if necessary.
Customizations (to do)
So you can easily resize your HTCMenus in the way it fits better to you.
You can use this thread to change "HTCMenus.png" file in size, color and "effects", and the registry keys involved (including fonts not changed above)
I can start with the registry keys written/changed above and my resized "HTCMenus.png" attached below.
Enjoy it!
Great idea and thanks for your work...will try when I get back from business trip.
Confirmed works......!!
my htc is better than before. thank you.
thankss. will try it..

Thanks for your landscape test!
My first 8 Rows .cab file supported 6 tiles in Landscape mode instead of the 5 tiles I wrote. I edited the 1st post and changed the Landscape registry of my 8 Rows cab file from 6 (tiles) to 5. Also, I included a new Landscape pic to see it in action.
I prefer to keep it in 5 tiles (in Landscape mode), because 6 tiles overwrite the taskbar a few pixels. Of course, feel free to change or edit the .cab file (or your registry) to your own like.

Sorry for my delay!
Check if you work under Manila2D (TouchFlo2D) in your device. This Menu should work ONLY under Manila2D. Otherwise, you'll see the default Windows Mobile Menu but not this HTC Menu.
But if tou want HTCMenus without Manila2D, please read carefully the edited 1st post.
Cheers!
Tested working without Manila... PERFECT!
Thnks a lot!!!
Very very very usefull app
Introduction
I originally removed the search bar and changed the stock grid in the Galay Naxus ICS launcher (here) and it was a well received mod.
Since Android was updated to 4.0.3 my method broke and needed to be adapted. On top of this a lot of people have asked me how it's done so they can apply it to other ROM's. In the interests of the community I have therefore written some basic instructions to allow you to do this and some other stuff by yourself. I've provided a link below to a Google Doc.
How To
Remove the search bar
Increase the grid to 4x5 (or anything you like)
Decrease the number of home screens below 5
Increase the number of home screens above 5
Notes
Note that these are written for a specific version of the launcher and you may need to adapt some things as you go but this will probably make the journey easier.
You will need to know how to use apktool before you start.

Thank you very much... do you know how to optimize the launcher to be 240 dpi compatible?

No, not off the top of my head, I've never tried.
But I'm pretty sure you'd start with /res/values/dimens.xml. I'd make no other changes first and then just manipulate the grid size and margins/padding a little by little in /res/values/dimens.xml until you got the desired result.
After that you could then proceed to make other changes as required.
If you find the ideal layout for 240 let me know and I'll add it to the doc and provide credit.
Very nice. So in order to nuke the search bar and keep the native screen layout, could one just edit the search_bar.xml? Or would we need to do the smali edits as well?
You're awesome, I used your galaxy nexus apk and just tweaked the values in the xml using your guide so it would display properly on my SGS and i'd get to keep the transparent folder mod you did. Many thanks for the guide and for figuring out the method. It's great having 5 rows and no Google bar Now I can use stock launcher as my default again, love the animation while going through app drawer.
nice!thank u
launcher adjust
I know this an older thread but, I would like to change to the app flow from right to left to up and down if possible in the drawer? cm9 standard launcher. What's the XML edit for it?

I'm not sure that would be a simple xml edit I'm afraid. I don't know where that's constructed off the top of me head sorry.
Thanks a lot for this! Modded the stock Jellybean Launcher2.apk with the help of your guide!

No problem.
Even though I use Nova I did it too with the JB launcher. I noticed that you can also change a couple of things in dimens and integers too.
Max folder size = 20
folder x = 4
folder y = 5
folder cell width = 85 (or something close to that)
That will also give you 4x5 folders, centred on the screen with 20 items max (instead of 16). Perfect.
I'll update the guide at some time...

Hah yeah I'm using Nova now aswell, for some reason the voice search button on the permanent search bar was still clickable, even though I had made it invisible...
What is the resolution for the N5's viewable screen area? I want to make some custom wallpapers but I'm trying to find the best wallpaper resolution for them... the portrait size.
Thanks!
At the risk of being enabling, 1080x1920.
I'm not sure if the stock launcher lets you set static wallpapers though. If you're trying to fit it in that cross, you're going to have to make it bigger than 1080x1920. Sure you can find a template somewhere. Or use a different launcher.

Still have no N5, but I might tell you about another android device I have.
I made double width size wallpaper and it asked to trim it. So far, so good.
To make jpg I used imagemagic remotelly with something like:
convert -size 2160x1920 xc:"#color" background.jpg
If this method fails, you could always try again.
Best regards.
I just run a bunch of tests on my Nexus 5x (the screen size is the same as Nexus 5) using an image with a grid and I thought I should write down my findings here.
I have icons on two screens, so it is asymmetric: I have my main screen and a screen on the right, there is no screen on the left. The image has to be a little larger so that it scrolls nicely. The thing is that my phone shows _the middle_ of the image on the main screen. So the main screen is 1920×1080, when I scroll right 60 more pixels on the right become visible. Since there is nowhere to scroll left, 60 leftmost pixels of the image are never visible.
To sum up: one needs a 1920×1200 image (1200 = 60 + 1080 + 60). Leftmost 60 pixels are never visible.
Anyone else noticed for such a large display the text is overly large, see pics & YouTube clip I have the Samsung tab S 10.5 & more text is filled on the screen than the Huawei 10.8" display (even the nexus 10 shows more text) & that's with the Text size & view mode set to small because of this I would end up scrolling more. This is making me think twice about getting the tablet. The one I reviewed is my parents.
Does not help that the max home screen grid is only 6x5 where as the Samsung tab is 8x6 which is better.
in the landscape picture it mostly is because of the navigation bar you dont need wth the tab s.
I agree with it being slightly less dense than your parents tab s but I only have a old notebook as a comparison (with 1366&768 resolution) and am perfectly happy with the tablet. I suppose this could be changed with a custom rom though.
Edit: btw if it is just the browser you can adjust the scale. in firefox go to about:config and search for font.size.systemFontScale. I've got it on 70 instead of 100 and can fit a lot more content.
First of all which OS is the Tab S running. Is it the old WebView which comes as separate App, or does it already have the new WebView which is integrated into Chrome. Seems as if it is the old one on the Tab S.
Regarding the Launcher grid well yeah EMUI is different to TouchWiz, less rows and columns on the grid, but less lag fest as well. If you want to obtain more rows and columns on the grid change the launcher let's say to Nova Launcher Prime.

I agree, I've done the same. For me, it's the non text items that are far too big. It feels like they've taken the 8.4" tablet and just scaled everything up.
I use a value of 950 - if you go smaller than that, the settings pages can become unusable. Note that this gets set on a restart, so you have to go back to Developer Options and set the value again. Still, how often do you reboot the tablet?
