Bootscreen And The Lack There Of - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

So I’ve searched the cdma Hero forum with the search and manually reading all the bug threads plus others and can't find anyone having the same type of problem.
I have tried at least 4 different roms based on the 2.1 sprint leak. Regaw Mod with the new patch, Damage control v2.05, DamageTrev and one I can't remember.
The only Rom to have a working bootscreen is damage Control and it is the default HTC Quietly Brilliant Sprint one that is in the bootanimation.zip located in /system/media/. If I remove that file like your supposed to in order for the flashable bootscreens to work, I only get a black screen for a bootscreen no matter what bootscreen I flash (i'v tried them all). The files in /system/media/bootscreen/ change for every bootscreen I flash but only produces a black screen. I can place the bootanimation.zip in /system/media/ on the other roms and do get the HTC Quietly Brilliant Sprint bootscreen. I have tested everything listed from a fresh wipe and flash multiple times.
Now the only major difference in me and 95% of other hero users on this forum is my phone came from Appalachian Wireless not Sprint but EVERYTHING else works perfectly. I am currently running RA-heroc-v1.6.2 recovery and RegawMOD v2.0.2p. I can also restore a nandroid backup to DC 1.1 and the boot screens work fine so I’m convinced it's something in the new Sprint leak but as of now it seems I am the only one that has this issue occurring.
I am open to any suggestions but I don't think this is simple fix issue and although I generally excel in all electronic device modifications of all flavors this is one I can't figure out and/or don't have the knowledge to dig deep enough find the problem. I’ve tried to be very detailed and hate that I’ve had to start a thread on this but I can't find an answer anywhere. If anyone needs any elaboration of what processes I’ve attempted just ask.

If I understand it correctly, you are supposed to remove the bootanimation.zip from system/media and replace it with a zip of the same name using the files/screens you want. For example.....I removed the one from dc 2.05 and took the one from damagedcake and pushed to system/media and it worked fine....Actually, you don't even need to remove the old one, just push it to system/media and it will overwrite the one that is there...just did that...........

So while that did work the bootanimation.zip that is with DamageCake is that same HTC Quietly Brilliant Sprint one. The Flashable zips for bootscreens change the files in the /system/media/bootscreen/ directory and normally when those have worked for me there was no bootanimation.zip in /system/media/. I did try to edit the files in the bootanimation.zip to my liking but it always breaks the bootscreen and I'm back to black.

No, what you need to do is completely remove the bootanimation.zip and android_audio.mp3 (or whatever thats called)
and
put the custom bootscreen stuff in /system/media/bootscreen

Regaw gald to see you in here and thanks for the reply!!!
Even when I remove those files the flashable boot screens only show black even when the files change in /system/media/bootscreen. On your rom the matrix boot screen should be showing from a fresh flash and wipe but it dosn't.
Really I've banged my head for 2 solid days trying to figure it out the only time i get bootscreen is when the bootanimation.zip in /system/media/

I'm makin something for you right now.
What boot screen do you want?

Try this one, its from someones rom. Im not saying i made this.
But I signed it and it will flash, its the same one im using on my DC 2.05. Maybe it will work for you. Delete bootscreen.zip before trying.
View attachment boot.zip

Doesn't matter really something without Sprint and that isn't black LOL
Thanks again for the help

well he beat me to the punch, I'm a little slow right now... obvious reasons.
that's what I was making for you.
Do what he said. make sure that the bootanimation.zip is gone and the android_audio.mp3 is gone from /system/media then flash it and enjoy.

Made sure there was no bootanimation.zip and I've never seen the android_audio.mp3 in there but I flashed the attached boot.zip from recovery and still just a black screen.
I swear guys if it had been that simple I would have fixed it 2 days ago I've made a few of my own flashable zips to edit the HTC weather/clock apk with no issues just lots of reading. I'm to the point where my OCD is just going to have to lose.

Sounds like something got messed up somewhere else.... you might need to wipe/reflash the rom.

Try to do a full reset of your phone, type ##rtn# then menu>reset>msl code
then flash a rom, let the rom boot up, then delete boot zip and flash custom boot.

I'v wiped and flashed so many times I've refrained from installing any apps or custom stuff until I can get this sorted or give up. i have not tried the full reset and don't have my MSL but being Appalachian wireless it may be all zeros i'll give that a shot.

Use the cdma_workshop way to get your msl, very easy and it works even if your phone isnt sprint. Just use a 1.5 rom when doing it.
If you end up doing a full reset. The phone will boot into recovery, press reboot and then it should do another boot after that. After the 2nd reboot, then you can flash and try the boot screens. Just fyi, so you get the full reset.

on second thought if a nandroid restore of Damage Control 1.1 has the bootscreen working would a full reset be something that would fix a bootscreen issue. I'm not 100% but my wife's phone has the 1st version of Regaw's and it didn't have a boot screen either. i'll have to verify when I get home plus update it. lol

Its the last hope I would think before going deep into files or kernels to see why it wont work on none sprint phones. lol
Reseting everything to 100% defualt (other then unrooting your phone) and going from there might be the only chance you have.

Can you make a MM for the HTC Mail application. Please.
Oops forgot to post that one. It will be up shortly.
I've tried to apply the Gmail one twice, both times it made Gmail stop working. I'm running Virtuous 3.1.0 had to restore with Titanium Backup. Any thoughts?
Hey thanks for the work. I tried the Gmail, Mail and SMS and they all stopped working (applied twice). Had to restore.
Don't fret, the others that I have tried have done the same.
I am using Rooted Stock Froyo, Deodexed, S-OFF.
Thanks for the effort.
Just tested gmail and mine disappeared too. I applied it again and it came back with the notify working. Please try this and report back.

looks like you will need to do a restart after you applied the themes. i guess the system needs to re read the apk to make them work.

ops i forgot to say that the "android Theme" folder needs to be clear. the xml is trying to find a file that you dont have because the phone made a copy of the "icon" folder.
Please clear out the android theme folder on your sd card and unzip again.
and delete the old zip files you have in you download file and re download.

[Mod] 4-in-1 Reboot Menu - Updated for 3.70 OTA ROMS

Ok guys... this is my port to the 4-in-1 Reboot Menu made by sqn- for the HTC Desire and DesireHD.
Hot Restart basically lets u guys restart the phone in less then 10 seconds instead of going through the full boot cycle.
This should work on any DeOdexed rom that has busybox installed and was made from the new android.policy.jar file that came with the 3.70 OTA update.

Please note that this is based off of the icons that are in com.htc.resources apk from the 3.70 OTA and if someone themed them a little different or using a different com.htc.resources apk file for their theme the icons might look different than the picture.
It is a relatively easy fix to make if u happen to end up in one of those situations... so let me know and ill try to help when i can.
Link to zip is attached... Have fun.
p.s.
i changed the icon for the reboot menu... so it doesnt look exactly like the pic.

a tiny tip...
next time.... instead of a nand backup... since it is only one file and nothing more.
simply use adb:
1. adb remount
2. adb pull /system/framework/android.policy.jar /where ever u wanna save it.
and flash... if anything goes wrong u can always push the file u had back to replace.
Off topic here, but where did you get your battery icon with the percentages? Can that be flashed with the new Fresh ROM (based on 3.30 leaked ROM) and can you share?

its the icons that konikub made and i redid them with numbers and a little bit of improved quality.
thats a part of the theme i have on my rom.
i will probably put up a stand-alone version of my theme soon for anyone who likes the theme but wanna stick to a different rom.
if u want only the batt icons... u need to look inside my framework-res.apk for them... and hopefully fresh uses a framework-res that has batt percent on and u can simply replace the images.
if u dont know how to do that i can be of much help cuz although its simple to do im sure u can find a how-to in the forum somewhere.

i think myn already had it ported to his rom a few weeks ago if im not wrong...
but anyways... i can see why it wont work with his rom.
initially i tried to pull off his port of it from his rom... but no go.... then i realized that he was using something else cuz my whole phone started acting up... so i went to the original page of the 4-in-1 boot menu and just did it myself with the new jar file from 3.30.
of course i had to switch some icons around cuz every image has its on unique id # and from phone to phone it might change.
im not sure what happens when u say its not working though... what does happen? does anything change?
Is it supposed to wipe data when flashing this? I stupidly didn't do a nandroid before flashing and had to re-setup everything. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention when I went to wipe the cache in recovery, don't know.
Anyway, the reboot menu is working fine in Fresh 3.4, I just had to set my stuff back up.

the update script in the zip doesn't even clear cache ... it just copy's over the old android.policy.jar file thats inside /system/framework...
so i really can't see why u would need or needed to set up everything again.
Hm. I probably just fat-fingered it when I was wiping the cache, then. Weird. It works though, so thanks.

[FAQ] Flashing UPDATE.ZIP the old fashioned way (How and Did It Work?)

I put together a diagram image showing how the file structure for how to take the various update.zip files to flash your rom or add functionality not obtainable via apk files or market. It was suggested we have a faq using this image to describe this process. I have only done this 3 times so I hope this is correct!
The basic thing it needs to explain is:
1. how to load up the filesystem with the update zip file and command file
Here is a diagram that shows either of the 2 methods to make this work, you can download zip files from Viewsonic's TNT page and just rename them to update.zip (then you have to create the recovery folder and command file), or you can download files here, some are rar'd which means the actual zip has been zipped/rar'd again, just extract it out, and if there are no recovery/command, you have to create them. A trick I use is to have this structure already defined on my laptop as a staging area, then I can just copy over a zip and a folder over to my device or sdcard.
I personally don't know how all this works, I believe the device first looks to the microSD card first for the recovery command file, then over to the internal storage for the same, but I could be wrong.
NOTE 1: Just make sure that if you use the external sd card, you have the correct command file notation (SDCARD2 not SDCARD).
NOTE 2: There are TWO dashes at the start of the command file contents, the image doesn't show it well (--update_package=SDCARD:/update.zip) or (--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip)
NOTE 3: This command file has NO file suffix, it is a text file, but make sure it is named command
NOTE 4: After a recovery is invoked, the process will have removed your command file (whether it was successful or not), and you will have to replace it when you are ready to flash again. A trick you might like is to copy the command file to command.bak, and each time you want to flash, just copy the bak file to command so you don't have to upload it each time. It is safest just to recopy the update.zip and command files back into their respective places each time you plan on reattempting recovery, just to make sure both files have the appropriate content.

}
2. how to boot into recovery
Power down the unit. Once it has gone blank, press and hold the Vol +, then press and hold the power button
3. how do you know recovery is booting up (Text at the top of the screen)
You should see tiny text in the upper left that says "Detect a Recovery Key Pressed", and then a 2nd line that reads "Recovery Image Detected", or something to that effect.
4. how do you know recovery did not see either the update.zip or command file or both (exclamation mark, plus no changes after reboot)
I have not personally hit this yet, but if you don't see a cardboard box logo in the middle of your screen with a progress bar at this point, chances are you have something incorrect. If you don't see any changes or see an exclamation point, then you don't have the filesystem exactly as described in the diagram in #1. Or your update.zip file isn't really the proper file, maybe you took a RAR file and just renamed it, etc. If you open the zip file, you should not see any zip files, but IMG files or BIN files or SYSTEM folders, etc.
Now, if you identify the issue and resolve it and are about to run another recovery cycle, take a look at #1 NOTE #4 above...
Hope this helps!
Thanks so much, this will be a time saver for us devs. A great reference for getting clockwork installed, or for people who don't want to use clockwork.
Stuck because it's worth it
Yeah, thanks.. Might keep me from answering the same question 52 bazillion times.....
you should add a note that the command file will be deleted after it has been run, regardless if the update occurred or not - always double check that the (correct) command file is there or you will get the exclamation point

Good point, I will add it. What folks could do (I have done this) is to make a file called command.bak, and you can just copy that to command every time you want to flash.

I understand and also know that some people like driving without tires too. Doing an update via OTA is way overrated. All I am saying is the benefits that can be gained by installing clockwork outweigh the negatives of not.
As soon as the OTA update comes out someone here will have the download location in seconds. That download can be installed from clockwork just like any other update file. Why Viewsonic doesn't just supply the file on there site is beyond me.
So... not running clockwork so you can wait for an update that comes every other month, or maybe never again versus having the security of easy to perform backups, the ability to easily install updates, fix the inevitable boot loop, mount storage, etc just doesn't make sense to me...

As soon as the OTA update comes out someone here will have the download location in seconds. That download can be installed from clockwork just like any other update file. Why Viewsonic doesn't just supply the file on there site is beyond me.
So... not running clockwork so you can wait for an update that comes every other month, or maybe never again versus having the security of easy to perform backups, the ability to easily install updates, fix the inevitable boot loop, mount storage, etc just doesn't make sense to me...

having a choice is better than not having a choice
I keep a complete library of files on a separate storage, and I only copy over what I want on the tablet. Just because you may like cwm, doesn't mean everybody does or will. This works just fine for me, and I am sticking with the stock OS until viewsonic stops supporting it, which means I wait for the ota updates.

And like the post above says.. Choice is good. If what you are doing works for you that's great.
It is not so much whether I like, or dislike clockwork. It is just a tool. For someone that buys a tablet, has no intention of doing anything but using it as it came, no clockwork is fine. But for those that want to keep the stock firmware but play around and add all the little updates, fixes, apps, or even play with all the other roms then I think you do yourself a disservice by not using clockwork. One of those things you do to your tablet will eventually end up in a bootloop. Or something you installed will not work and you will want to revert back to what you had before. You can't fix that with the stock recovery, but you can do it with clockwork.
Not trying to start an argument. I just see many advantages to using it versus not.
I think a lot of people don't want to use it because they are afraid of breaking there tablet. Installing a lot of different things available here, and other places is much more scary... And without a viable backup, or recovery method can be a real pain to fix.
Wanting to keep your tablet stock is fine. But if you bought a car that came stock with no brakes, I guess you could drive it. But if there was a really simple method to add brakes to augment your feet wouldn't you want them? Maybe not.. But I do...
I am glad you took the time to write this guide. Even though it is listed all over these forums how to do what you wrote it seems people don't read much anymore. So hopefully it will help some folks...

Good point, I will add it. What folks could do (I have done this) is to make a file called command.bak, and you can just copy that to command every time you want to flash.

I've only used the latest version, but have noticed a behavior not covered here:
rather than deleting the /recovery/command file, it deletes the contents of the file. This seems to happen whether or not the update actually happens.

I can't remember on whether or not it happens when it doesn't actually run the update. However, it has always deleted the command file for me.

[MOD] Google Nexus S Boot Animation

I really like Nexus S boot animation, it's one of the most beautiful ones I've seen so I decided to mod it for note.
Preview:
(The actual animation looks better as the preview is in half the resolution.)

EDIT2: I have finally learned how to sign files so this fixed-signed version should flash reliably now
EDIT3: So, seems I was too quick there... The file flashed correctly the first time. But then when I tried again later I got error twice and then the third time it flashed... Not quite sure what's wrong - CWM is not exactly informative in its error messages. So if flashing fails just try again a few times!
Thank you!
Nice!
I don't usually change or care that much about boot animations but that is a really good looking one!thanks a lot for sharing mate
off to flashing
Mate I flashed you're mod and it's amazing!thank you very much
Can you tell me what files I have to delete to disable bootanimation sound? I tried bootsamsung and boot samsundloop in /system/media but wasn't successful
Thanks in advance

I tried this. Installed via CWM, install went fine, but no change in boot animation.
I am on Rocket rom v18. Is this only supposed to work on stock?
Any help is appreciated.

Very sorry, I never actually tested the CWM file myself.
There was an error in the installation script which I have now fixed and re-uploaded the file: http://www.multiupload.com/SYYQBKHN60
It should now work fine, at least it did for me.

Tried to apply again and this time it gave error
E:Error in /sdcard/download/bootanimation-nexus-s-cwm-fixed.zip (status 0).
Installation aborted.
What other installation method can I use with the zip? You said you did not test it CWM so I guess you used some other means. Do you just rename zip to apk?
Anyway there is probably still some syntax errors that you left in there.
Thank for trying to help.

Ugh... That's strange, sorry for that! I tried flashing this file using recovery in CF-root LA3 kernel and it worked fine for me, not sure what the problem is :/
If you want to install manually, just put the bootanimation.zip file (contained in the bootanimation-nexus-s-cwm-fixed.zip file) and put it to /system/media using Root Explorer (or adb if you have it set up). Don't forget to remount /system read/write first.
problem since la4
hi this was working great (manually put in system/media) then i flashed la4, put in there again and it just loads stock animation every time, and if i delete stock it just loads blank, any ideas?
Which kernel do you use?

Hi, as far as I know custom boot animations work with CF kernels and AbyssNote kernels (probably with most custom kernels but these two I have personal experience with).
They do not work with stock kernels.
Signed file reploaded
Hi,
I have finally learned how to sign zip/apk files so I have re-uploaded a signed CWM-flashable file that should work correctly at last.
Thanks for your patience

kernals......hmmm i need to do some more reading in the forums
I've only just wrapped my head round installing roms etc so not got a clue about the kernals.
I guess I accidentally flashed a compatible kernal the 1st time I ref lashed and this latest flash doesn't have a compatible one. Can I install a custom kernal with mobile Odin?

Yes, Mobile Odin is ideal. Just click Kernel and select either a zImage file (found inside the CWM flashable files) or a tar file that contains the zImage file. Then click Flash firmware at the bottom.
I would recommend a CF-root kernel to start with - it's nearly stock so is the least likely to give you any trouble. Download the kernel according to your ROM base version from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20724234&postcount=5
Ah nice one. Thank you piit79 followed your steps and now have a new kernel........just gotta figure out what I can do with it now but hopefully I can get me boot animation back now

Hi, yeah, don't quite know what it is! As mentioned in the first post it flashed fine when I was testing the last signed package. But then I re-flashed ROM and when I tried again it was failing. Anyway, when I tried again it would succeed on third or fourth attempt. Just try again until it flashes

Remove the "silenced", "4G", "Battery symbol" and "AM/PM" from notification bar
I want to modify my notification bar so it's more something like this:
Sadly I can't put this as an image because of new user restrictions, but if a mod could edit my post for me that'd be great.
Is this possible?
I'm using a rooted 4.4.2 M8 on Verizon.

Are you on a custom ROM or stock (or stock rooted)?
I think we can help you out with a combination of system settings and systemui, apk modifications.
edit: Just saw you said you're on the stock rooted. Go thru all the settings, I think you might be able to remove the AM/PM and possibly battery. Otherwise, can you get into your phone and copy /system/app and find the systemui.apk file.
Copy it and upload it here, we can find the settings that control those.

I don't see that anywhere. I'm using ES file explorer in this picture but I also don't see it in Root Explorer.

ES is what I use. Make sure you have root enabled and RW system. Navigate to /system/app.
You'll see systemui.apk
Copy that and go to /sdcard or /0 and paste.
Plug in your phone and grab the file and upload.

I don't see any app called systemui.apk. The only files on there that start with an S are settings.apk, Settings.odex, SmartcardService.apk, SmartcardService.odex, SmartDim.apk, SmartDim.odex, Street.apk and Street.odex
Try /system/priv-app folder.

No, that is totally different.
RUU is the HTC file that contains your system image, radio, bootloader, etc..
The file you gave me is just one system file we are changing in your current ROM.
I really advise you to read A LOT before flashing a new RUU or custom stuff to make sure you are 100% in what you're doing.

Alright, in that case I definitely won't try doing that.
Also, I just got an OTA update "offer" from Verizon that wouldn't let me decline, just delay for up to 24 hours. I have about 12 hours left before it auto-installs (4.4.3). I asked the developer of sunshine (what I used to root it) and he said that it would not brick my phone and I should be fine updating it, but it's odd I got it because I uninstalled the default crapware.
ANYWAY, will the update break the rom?

If you have not installed a custom recovery or bootloader or ROM you should be fine. Freezing certain system apps does not mean that the OTA checker is necessarily disabled.
If the the Sunshine dev told you it should be fine, then it should be fine.
edit: It will probably remove root access though, and you may need to re-root if everything goes smoothly in the first place. I don't think root would make it not update correctly, more likely it will just replace some system stuff, but maybe someone who actually owns this phone knows more than I do on this.
I am on a OnePlus One as my daily driver at the moment and we don't run into the same issues HTC users do.
