LedNotifications it's a event based application that will detect when some applications write in the notification bar and will raise a led event.
The app consists in a:
-background process (lednotifybkg.exe)
-configuration tool (LedNotifyGUI.exe)
Bakground process it's coded in C to maximice performance and memory consumption. Background process will trigger the led events so you don't need the configuration tool to be running.
The application it's now hardcoded so only works with HD2 devices.
How to use it
Just run the configuration tool. Now raise a notification (for example a misscall) and go to configure-> add last active notification. Now select the led and press Add. To ensure compatibility you'll only be able to configure the LAST ACTIVE NOTIFICATION. So if you have 3 notification, you'll be able to configure the last one. To configure the others rid of the last one and do the same again.
When you finish, start the background process. If it's started, shutdown it and start it again to apply changes.
PLEASE SHUTDOWN THE CONFIGURATION TOOL WHEN FINISH WITH THE EXIT BUTTON OR THE BATTERY CONSUMPTION MAY BE INCREASED
Warning: The background process will not start automatically. You should start it when your device it's reset.
SOURCE CODE
I'll release the source code when I get positive feedback indicating that the application has no bugs.Just to release something in good conditions. I'm not a software developer so don't expect too much.
THANKS TO...
MichyPrima for the ManilaSDK
NetRipper for LeoExtendedNotifications source code
WARNING: INCOMPATIBILITIES
To raise an event I delete a registry value that saves the id of the active notification. Concretely HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\State\Shell\Notifications\Active value ID. If you experience any problem with other notification software it can be related with this. Disable my app, make a soft reset and check if the issue has been solved.
MUST READ
I've made an effort coding this application, ensuring it has no bug and fixing it. So now I'm asking you if you like the application please donate to some ONG (ie http://www.supportunicef.org/), so I've helped you with this app, you can help other people with your money . Now you've read this you know that the pword to open the file is donateong
KNOWN BUGS
a) When the bicolor led it's blinking if you rid off some notification maybe it won't shutdown. Please report if this happens to you, I don't know if I fixed it at all.
FAQ
What's the battery consumption?
The battery consumption it's 0!!. The led it's put in an automode so the application it's not responsible of making the on/off process, the app just triggers leds on/off
Why I can't configure led's frequency and duty cicle?
To ensure maximum battery performance the led it's put in an automode. The driver is the responsible to blink the led so you can't configure it. You can still download previous versions but they consume battery power.
Why have you changed the Add apps menu?
With the new system I can't monitor all notifications so I've coded this way to ensure notifications you add will raise an event in the background process.
Why don't you use the netRippers code to blink the keypad?
Because I don't know howto put in automode and this affects battery performance
What's the password for the file?

OLD VERSIONS
Hello!,
I'm here to present my first windows mobile application LedNotifications. It's a general purpose led notifier but designed in an HD2 (so by now only works in an HD2).
The application looks for notifications in the notification bar and let's you to configure a led color. The led will start to blink as soon as the notification icon appears in the notification bar. There's a quicklist to enable/disable apps quickly. The app also lets you to override the power led.
There are some known bugs:
1)the configuration tools sometimes crashes.
2) Slide reported that sometimes the app doesn't work in stanby mode, if anybody knows what the reason could be please write in this post
It will let you configure led email notifications on the HD2!
Use at your own risk, I'm not responsible for the damages that this program can cause to you or/and your device.
Background program can crash and run CPU as high as 90% so if this happens it will drain your battery.I've been working on that so I expect this not to happen but it's a possibility.
Configuration files allow you to use in other devices. Format text files are
on.txt -> configuration to bring led on
off.txt -> configuration to turn the led off
so every file has LED_ID,LED_STATUS_VALUE
in HD2 green led is 1 and on status is 1
on.txt looks like this 1,1
I hope you like the program. I will post the source code soon.
The program does not register to startup so a reset will disable it (and solve any problem related to this)
Lots of thanks to MichyPrima for the manila controls

Jordi

The app has two executables. One for the GUI and the other for the background. The background process manages leds and it coded in C++. Only around 70kbyte of memory and around 1% CPU . The GUI it's about 2Mbyte but it can be shutdown once you have configured it.
Will be watching this with exteme interest!

Hi htcjordi!
Thanks for the program. I am testing it on my Topaz. It seems to be working perfectly so far. I love the interface.
Many thanks! I will report any bugs I find.
I have a link from the start menu to this so it auto starts after a reset.
So far not too bad... Occasionally the led stays on but otherwise i finally have my flashing email notification
Well done!
Hi! Very interesting application you made there.
I think it would be even more interesting if the 2 settings txt files would be replaced by registry entries.
Thanks for the good work!
I have been testing this for about a day now. I received an email but the LED was not responding. When I woke up my device, the LED illuminated and stayed illuminated even after I removed all notifications and my TD2 was not charging.
It would be nice to be able to configure the different notifications with different LEDs. I haven't figured out how to do this yet.
Otherwise, it is great.

Actually it was easier to do with registry entries but I did it with text files because I think it's more friendly to work with text files than work with the registry. Just in case somebody want to write new files! Anyway I apreciate your comment

Hi mitsi! I figured out that you have a Diamond, I can't test my app with this machine but I'll try to help you.Did your TD2's leds work through the configuration menu? I mean the menu you can configurate led's frequency and duty cicle. If the led is not blinking you'll have to play with configuration files.
You can configure notifications with different leds. Raise some event in the notification bar to list some app in the app menu. Then activate the app pressing the on/off button : it should appear a menu indicating wich led you want to turn on (in my case green/orange). If different physical leds are avaliable (not one with many colors) they should appear with indepentents on/off buttons.
Thank you for all your feedback

How is work going on this?
I seem to keep getting an instant where by the flashing LED stays solid when i get rid of the notification (by reading the email).
I have currently set up a shortcut to the GUI so i can stop/restart it but it's a bit annoying... any chance you can add a restart into the script after the notification is removed?
PS its a HD2....

I wrote a small app (based on other people's hard work) that will flash the LED when a new notification is active.
I did this because all my previous WM5 PDA's had a visible "new message" notification and I found it useful !
1. Copy the SDKCerts.cab from the Visual Studio SDK onto your device
2. Run the .cab on the device to install the SDK root certs
3. Extract the msgled.zip and copy msgled.exe to the startup folder of your Treo
Done
It *should* check every 10 seconds for new messages and flash the LED if there are any.
Enjoy.
Thanks. . coming from a Treo 650, ive missed this very useful feature via an app called Butler, i do hope that it can also be set to 'steady green or red'

Works like a charm indeed, but I am running into a small bug! I have my Treo set for powering off the screen after 1 minute, but if I have your tool active it won't. It will disable the display lights, but not actually turn the Treo off...
Thanks it works great.
Good Job !!!
ehh
works great..
only one thing.. i got a voicemail message so it left a notification and i got the blinking led (great).
But there seems no way to get rid of the voicemail notification now
So i tried to remove the msgled file form the startup folder.. doesnt let me.. hmmmm
Anyway to remove the msgled file? or stop it?

Hi,
I guess you can help me in my Problem.
I had flashed my ROM for softbank x01ht witha widows6 rom(dont remember which version).
Since then the Device lights i.e. the bluetooth light and the service ligts are not working meaning they do not blink at all.
When I connect the Charger, a RED LED flash for a fraction of second and then goes off, though the charging is done with no problem.
Can you pls tell me how can I solve this problem, I have tried to search a solutuon with all the possible combination of key words.
Pls. help me if you know any possible solution.
THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE,
Mandrix
This is great, thanks!
is there any way to turn the led orange instead of green when receiving new messages?
great app though. thx.
Treo 750 - Missed call / message notification orange LED
Zwuncki
I too am looking for an option to do this but it seems that the only option so far has been to turn the LED green for notifications (I am using Mortscript and nled). An improvement over the existing but orange would be nice.
For the Treo 650, this was nicely done by an application called "MissedCall" but from reading posts in other forums it seems that no one has figured out a way to turn on the orange LED in Treo 750 (it does this when out of range of signal in its built in default state).
Works great!!!!
cdelauz02 - what works great? I assume you are talking about Mortscript/Nled? or have you gotten the notification to turn the orange LED on somehow?

Do you think this will drain the battery? Since it checks every 10 seconds for new messages.

Thanks for your answer. Nice to see some activity on the 750 forum.
At the moment I'm trying SPB Phone Suite. It looks like it also notifies the user by flashing the LED when you've missed a call. One "bug" is when you dismiss a missed call the indicator still shows the number of missed calls.
I might be mistaken, but if I understand what I've read over at the Phonealarm forums the 750 handels notifiers different than other pocket pc's and what you've noticed is one of the results. I believe that the counts should reset if you actually view the missed call log.
Otherwise, how do you like the SPB phone suite? I've been eyeing it, but being a regular reader of the phonealarm forums I know the amount of work that goes into such a program and am a bit weary of a first release. What's your impression?
I must say that I like the idea. It sure is a very good first release! Skinning is not my main target. Stability is
Just installed a Beta of PhoneAlarm. It worked for a few hours, now the screen looks messed up (stripes). Like the images aren't rendered correctly.
Read that the memory footprint of PhoneAlarm is smaller than SPB Phone Suite.
But we're a little of topic now Will post more info when I have it!

I was referring to the led notifications, I dont mind having the led green, but if orange was available it will be nice as well.
I need some help. Is there a way to make the green LED light blink in an other colour (red/yellow) in case of a new message has arrived or a calender reminder has been started? This has been one of the functions that worked with all other HTC devices. The LED is totally useless with this device by blinking green the whole time, only changing to yellow when loading the battery nad red when battery is empty.
I'm not sure about changing the colour, but this device actually has two led lights, I wouldn't consider it completely useless
One on the right shows the battery status:
Red - Batt Low
Orange - Charging
Green - Fully charged
The one on the left :-
blinks blue - bluetooth enabled
blinks green - Wifi is enabled
There are programs like DontForget that allow the led to flicker on reminders, mails, messages etc. Check here:-
http://magazin.softimage.cz/?page_id=26
thanks for your reply and you are right about the two LED. I was aware of this and of the relating functions. I am also aware of the "don't forget" app but this app does not change the LED on a WM6 device. I am looking for a way to bring the right LED to blink in a changed colour in the case of an event. other htc devices do so, so there must be a way to stir these LED lights. still looking and maybe soemeone has a registry hack or some ideas on this. thx

Guys,
My girlfriend just got the XT720. I don't see ANY lights on this thing - power (when charging) or when a text comes in, nothing "flashes". You have to turn on the screen to see if any messages came through.
I've hunted for information and don't see anything telling me that there is actual visual notification on the phone. I carry a Nexus One and the trackball light flashes to tell you that you've missed something. There are 3 dots on the upper left corner of the XT720 just above the screen, and those "may" be lights, but I have no diagrams or information to tell me. If they are lights, they don't work.
Can anyone give me a quick piece of advice on this?
Cheers,
Mark.

I was a little disappointed to find out that there were no notifications lights. Coming from a Blackberry I'm used to the red blinky light for notifications. In fact, I had everything on silent except incoming calls - the light was enough to tell me (even from across the room) if there was any notifications. I know you can set the 4 touch sensitive buttons at the bottom to blink...but it's infrequent and they tend to stay off if a notification comes in.
Would it be possible to write a script to make use of the 3 media LEDs on the side for notifications (emails, SMS, missed calls, Facebooks, etc)? I have little to no programming knowledge so I certainly can't - nor do I know if it's even possible.
Hey easye420, thanks for the reply...althought it's not what I was hoping for! LOL I find it difficult to believe there's no blinking light of sorts on this thing.
Riley600, she too is coming from a blackberry and that's her gripe about it. I've been trying to get her onto an android for a while and this was the best device her wireless company offered. I like your idea about a script to do this and think many people would love to have it....especially ex-blackberry users! I'm not a programmer though so can't help in the design I'm afraid.
Thanks also for the note on the back buttons flashing. I'll see if there's a good app to make those blink....just some visual notification that you've missed something. I'd think that would be a standard feature of any of today's phones.
Cheers,
Mark.

No app needed.
Settings --> Sound & Display Settings --> check Visual Notification (and Periodic Notification if you want to get reoccurring notifications).
I forgot bout that. When i had it enabled if i turned to screen on when it was blinkin they would either stay off or stay on and it would piss me off.

Hey Riley600, sorry mate I don't know the answer to that. I would assume it's possible, but not sure how difficult it would be.... maybe someone else knows?
Yes it is possible.
as you know, the xt720 doesn't have multicolor led (other phones has one, which can basically light in 3 different colors).
Anyway, i was playing some times ago and discovered, that the multimedia leds, corresponds to red, green and blue colors
just find the notes i have made:
Code:
/sys# echo 1 > ./bus/platform/devices/notification-led/leds/blue/brightness
camcorder
/sys# echo 1 > ./bus/platform/devices/notification-led/leds/green/brightness
camera
/sys# echo 1 > ./bus/platform/devices/notification-led/leds/red/brightness
gallery
sys/./devices/platform/button-backlight/leds/button-backlight/brightness
four buttons
/sys# echo 0 >./devices/platform/af-led/leds/af-led/brightness
af led
so instead of possible, it seems to be easy (rooted phone assumed)
i have seen several apps, which can deal with notifications (market)
this can be used for the code to deal when to trigger notification
and i use adjbrightness, which works in similar way.
this can be used for the code to trigger the leds
here is an information link to adj brightness.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731032
edit: actually it can be even easier, but it depends on the /sys entries of a phone with dedicated led. but the idea is the same

That's great to know that it should be easy. But I'm going to be honest in saying that I'm not an Android expert.
If you would be so kind to give me a set of easy to follow steps (my phone is rooted, I know how to use adb, etc) on how to set something up to blink the media LEDs for notification, your coffees next week will be on me. I don't know how to (or have the ability to) unpack APKs, edit them and repack them. If you can provide a easy to implement solution (some basic editing of an existing program or an APK for me to use), you will not only be my hero - you will also have some more money in your pocket. It sounds like you might be a couple other people's hero in this thread as well.
Thanks!
it is not about money
it is not about coffee (there is just a new espresso machine in the office
it is about time...
so i will go deeper in the very possible and very easy way (i have edited my post above).
i saw some applications on the market , which can do the job (e.g. deal with the led for some events aka notifications ).
the easiest way is to find a phone, when they worked as expected.
then on this phone, to find the corresponding entries in the /sys folder, which deals with the leds, and just try some symbolic links to our leds
in the easiest way it will be as simple as:
ln -s /sys/bus/platform/devices/notification-led/leds/green/brightness /sys/what_ever_path_is_needed
of course there will be some drawback (e.g. not fully customizable), but it will work.
this method will not require nothing else...
anyway more appropriate way (more time consuming) will be to modify some almost do the job application, to do it for our phones. (actually, to submit patches to the developers regarding support of our phones).
this is the right way (in my opinion). the prerequisites:
1. application which do the job for some phone
2. open source
then:
3. spent some time in code
4. test the patch
5. send it to mainstream
i will be glad to do it for fun, will appreciate help regarding step 1 and 2

of course there will be some drawback (e.g. not fully customizable), but it will work.

I have a basic idea of what you're saying here. I used Root Explorer to navigate to /sys/bus/platform/devices/notification-led. It appears as a empty file, though. I'm not sure if the ln -s is a command or what. Would you be able to elaborate a little?
And this method would obviously not allow for the setting of a custom blinking interval, etc. Being able to set something like that would be awesome - but right now I'll take whatever I can get.
Or would it be possible to change the settings for the key backlight blink to one of the media LEDs? Perhaps by moving or changing one of the system files?
I use "Missed Reminder" for calls, emails and sms. Works fine.

This doesn't work for the LEDs, though - does it?
Not the LEDs for camera etc. But for the LEDs of the Home-key ...
Solution: LED me know

Guys,
My girlfriend just got the XT720.
Cheers,
Mark.

Solution found!
An app called 'LED me know' by p0w4p0ty (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837057) is able to use the 3 media lights to signal notifications. So far I've found it works for Gmail, SMS and missed calls - but I believe it supports other notifications as well. At this moment, it doesn't seem to work for Gtalk notifications. It's highly customizable (you can set each one of the 3 media lights to blink [corresponding to red, green and blue] or you can set them to blink in combinations [2 lights for cyan and 3 lights for white]). I should mention that the phone needs to be rooted in order for this to work with the XT720.
I'm very pleased with it so far and it's free (in fact I'm looking across the room right now and see that I have a SMS).
Hi,
I have a Htc Desire with Android 2.3.5 (rooted) and the problem with clear or cancel missed call notification (MODIFY_PHONE_STATE permission) with alternative dialer app (go contacs,Angel Dialer).
So I develop a simple app that is configurable for intercept missed call, launch customizable notification with reminder and go to default dialer phone resetting system missed call notification.
But for this target, the app must install under /system/app, otherwise, as a normal app, the 'clear missed call' is not functionally. I use SSHDroid or ES File Explorer for copy apk in system/app e run install.
Reboot your phone.
I have tested this app only on my device. It's my first app, but is working for my case.
who is proposed as a beta test?
thank you very much
Manny
Notes
I'm not responsable for any damage provided by this application.
Probably some bugs left, provided for testing purpose.
Functionality
Cancel missed call notification if you use alternative dialer app
Repeating alarm for missed call (Sound, Vibration, Led)
Repeating alarm for new SMS (Sound, Vibration, Led)
Requirement
root
Installation
Just copy CamaMind.apk under /system/app
Changelog
2.0 : Complete code review for bug fixing (or for add new bugs?!?). Please feedback me.
Thanks, it is working great with the ROM in my sig. and exDialer!
Only think I would like to ask to fix, is that when pushing back button after viewing missed call log, it first returns in CamaMind menu and I have to push back button again to clear display.
wow, way too much permissions for what the app is doing:
- SMS?
- Internet?
- Contacts?
- Standby Mode?
Please provide some feedback on why you need all these permissions.
Hi,
I want to tell you that I did not believe that the application was being used (we hope).
I fixed the bug reported by Jolas.
Report for permission:
for monitoring call and sms in input : READ_PHONE_STATE
for reset missed call: MODIFY_PHONE_STATE
for open calls log: READ_CONTACTS
for led in stand-by : WAKE_LOCK
for receive and open sms apps: READ_SMS | RECEIVE_SMS
Thanks all.
Manny
Thanks, but what about internet?
I really don't see why the app has to connect to the internet...

Sorry geenyous, in the version 1.5.1 I have remove the Internet permission.
Perhaps I was abused a few copy-paste too!!

No LED Notification
I tested your app but I had to delete it again, when it is active I don't get LED notifications for missed calls (haven't tested SMS).
Also I have to tap the notification 2 or more times to have the other, call notification cleared, which is not that bad, but still annoying for an app that should make things easier, but the no LED is critical for me.
I think you go in a good direction, some more tweaks (settings to turn on/off SMS notif for example, bugs as mentioned above) and your app might be very helpful once finished, it really is very annoying to have to clear the notification when not using stock dialer!
another method of clearing missed calls notifications with other than stock dialer is described here and is working very well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1187025
hope this helps, cheers

In theory, the LED should light blue color. On my device the LED lights green, but lights! Becomes blue until after the second round notification, and if I clicked on the default notification of missed calls. Can you make a test?

Sorry for not coming back to you earlier.
I have now tested your app again and the notification LED works as well as the implementation to choose not to run when an SMS is coming is great!
Only issue I still have, and this is kind of a real dealbreaker, is that your app seams to work only one time.
I miss a call, I get 2 notifs, yours and from phone, i click on yours, both get cleared and I am in my phone app (dialer2), so far so good. Now, when I get another missed call, I again get both notifications, but when I click on yours my phone app opens but it doesn't clear your nor the phone notification. I have to manually clear them (as is the case without your app).
The next missed call, the phone notification says 2 missed calls and yours is there as usual, again not clearing when clicking on it. After I go into yout apps settings and disable and enable it, all works again for one time...
If you sort out this issue, then your app would be perfect for me!

Thanks, had to freeze development while the app was being judged and had to take care of other projects. Right now my priority is to fix the message display, do you have anything to report that needs to be fixed?

This may be some sort of error on my part, so please bear with me. My only complaint is when using your app the Now Notifier screen seems to stick around. I do have my watch set to wake up to last screen used as that is the only way the Endomondo app is useful when running. Is there a way to turn this off.

If you have autohide on, and don't touch the notification, it should hide automatically. If you touch it, you should swipe up to down past the green screen to dismiss the application.

Got it...thanks. Would it be possible in a future update to allow for the autohide timeout to be changed by the user to something shorter?
Edit: Just received an email through Nine (me email app on my phone). I got the notification through NN, replied to it with NN and the NN screen stayed on the screen until I made it go away. This is what I meant earlier. Is this something that's limited by the APIs, or is it something that can be configured to go away on its own?

What would you consider shorter? If I do it I would prefer to consolidate everything together so more like a selection between none / 5 seconds / 10 seconds / 30 seconds / 1 minute so that way there is no 2 options for the same thing, what you think?

Is the autohide for the NN screen or the notification itself. If for the notification, the choices of 5/10/20 would probably be ideal, at least to me. If it is for the NN screen, then just a standard 5 seconds would be fine. I wouldn't think you would want it to not show up as all; I mean you want your name out there and all, I get that.
By the way, did you see my edit above?

The NowNotifier screen is more for you not to leave by error the app when you don't want it because when you get to it, you are a swipe away from leaving the application.
I think I got it, the auto hide is when you receive a notification. As soon as you touch the application, the autohide stops so you can browse/read your notification. If i understand you well, you want to dismiss the application once you execute an action (like reply) is that correct?

Correct.
Well then yeah, that would have to be a new option something like "Hide application after action" and that basically wouldn't have a delay, once you click the button it hides.

I just thought of another "issue", please don't take this as nit-picking. I really do like your app.
I use the stock sleep app at night. This silences notification and keeps the screen from coming on in the middle of the night. Your app still goes off throughout the night and I never remember to turn off your app until after the first time I'm woken up by the buzzing on my wrist. Is it possible to make your app "respect" the sleep mode?
I am not a developer and only have a very generic understanding of api's and such, so this may not be feasible.
Did you email me about that before?
Yes I'm looking into it, by default I just post the messages that the phone broadcast, so I need to find out a way for me to know when the phone is in that mode to block the messages. No luck so far, but still looking into it.
I'll update the main post with a wishlist and work through it later.
No, I never emailed you... But that must mean I'm not the only one who thought of it. Thanks for starting this thread.
Yeah I got some a question about it some time ago, didn't know about that functionality so I'm looking into it. Yeah between emails and see if comments were updated, I saw a question about the application in this forum, so decided what a better place to keep all the feedback in one place.
Also at this moment I'm doing some live development, testing my encoding PC for other project so feel free to drop and keep the feedback going :good:

Here is a quick demo for the hide after action
Ok I have a list of enhancements I would love to see:
Phone app:
1- When first installed, all applications are enabled (checked) by default, it takes a while to uncheck the applications you don’t want to receive notifications from. Maybe a "check/uncheck all" button.
2- Option to receive notifications on Gear and vibrate while keeping screen off.
3- Option to not show notifications on Gear when phone is used “i.e. screen on and unlocked”.
4- Option to dismiss notification on Gear when it is dismissed from phone, and vise-versa.
5- Option for to exclude notifications from “ignored phrases”.
6- Option for “Night/Do not disturb” times.
7- Provide option for different vibration “duration” for each app
Gear app:
1- Theming option (dark background & light background)
2- “Text size option”.
3- You should queue all the notifications received.
4- Swipe right/left for next/previous notification. Swipe down to dismiss. And tap for notification text/details. Swipe up for (suggestions?)
5- After dismissing the last notification, app should go back immediately (1 sec delay?) to watchface.
And most important of all, stability, stability and stability. The problem I have seen with all the notification apps is stability and usability issues. Often they either hang, crash or stop receiving notifications for some reason or another. And that is very frustrating.
Honestly, if you want you app to be the best notification app (whether free or paid), you should look at the two other similar notification app and combine the best features with your app which I believe provides the best visual experience but lacks in features.

Thanks for the list Renegade!
You should have seen this app the first revision 2 months ago, it was as plain as it gets
Some stuff is doable, other might not, right now is limited by my limited knowledge of Android an Tizen, like you say I like to work more on stability so for me is means to add 1 or 2 new features per release.
