I have the film "finding Nemo" in Windows media format, it is 117 megabytes in size, on the xda2 it works great using media player 9, on the xda1 using media player 8.5 it wont play. Any ideas why, on the xda it shows the timer wheel then says cant play file.
Maybe the video file is in the new WMV 9 format that can't be played by older versions of Windows Media Player.
FYI, when you upgrade your XDA to WM2003 it will include Media Player 9.

Where can we find tha Upgrade ??

WM2003
So is WM2003 on that site the - "4.00.05 ENG ppc2003" option?
Is there anything I should know BEFORE I upgrade my XDA1 to that version from 3.17.03 ROM and 4.21.00 Radio?

yeah, download it like a nb1 file and upgrade your device with xdatools.
by putting the rom on your storage card en then reboot your device in bootloader mode (you can do that by pressing the power buttom and the do a soft/hard reste)
xda1 one update
I am in the same boat in the us with tmobile phone - tried to update using the page with os options, click on build button - no response. It just sat there. Is there something I am missing?
Maybe obvious, but you need to make sure you've slected a set of programs that will fit - the horizontal bar at the top of the page will be green and not say "OVERLOAD" - when the page first loads it has too many things selected by default.
I think there may also be an issue with one or two of the program selections. Once in awhile someone says they can't get the ROM build to run to completion without getting some sort of 'missing file' message.
For what it's worth I just ran the kitchen with Base ROM 3.17.03 selected and no add-ins - it ran fine (I didn't try to download the result).
sometimes the it takes a long while to build if many people are there at once
when it's don it should display a button called download
i went 4.01.00 yesterday when a program crash and failing to softreset forced me to hardreset
imho then there difference is not that big between 2002 and 2003
apart from no all software for 2002 works on 2003 and the other way around
Uhhhh..yeah that seems pretty obvious...now that you told me. I didn't know if that was a banner ad or something else at the top of the screen. makes sense now.
Hello,
Just wondering which browser is better
Opera Mini - http://www.operamini.com/
Or
Opera Mobile - http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/
Or
Opera Mobile HTC Diamond Version -(Not Sure If I Can Post Link So I Just Wont)
Im Not Sure If There's Even A Difference With The Diamond Version And The One On The Opera Website but I thought I go ahead and ask??
What Is The Difference In The Two or Three
I Really Like Opera Mini The Pages Load Up Really Fast - and I only have the T-mobile 5.99 internet plan
But Which One Is Better???
Thanks
Opera 9.5 Beta Rocks!!
i have tried all the diff diamond versions available. They all come down to one thing. Proper performance stability is not there. Opera Diamond crashes now and then on extensive browsing.
But not since i started using Opera 9.5 Beta. Its really stable and i must say optimised for other devices.
I even changed the Opera 9.5 Beta.lnk to Opera 9.5 so i dont see the beta. keke
Opera mini....never really was a big fan of those Java apps...atleast not on me htc
I found page rendering poor on Opera 9.5, Had to scroll to see the whole page, fonts seemed to be out of proportion. So I kept Opera 9.5 on my Universal and gave up on it altogether on my Elf.

Mini - but you need to work on it!
I use mini all the time - I've just gone back to my elf after trying out kaisers and nikes for a couple of months... The speed of mini means that you get the same performance without 3G!
I've got a shortcut to Mini, so that I can launch it from an icon or menu without loading java first, and a script that makles it work with url links from emails.
Important though is what version you get - if you get the default, you get an unsigned version, and prompted to allow web access every time you launch - big nono... so go to mini.opera.com on your phone, then select download an older or alternative version, and you get the option to download a signed version, which you can trhen use without being prompted every time.
Done this way, mini works brilliantly.

I tried The beta Its OK But, I Still Like The Mini Its Alot Faster Loads My Pages In Seconds (On GPRS)
How did you get the shortcut I've been wanting to do the same thing -
Thanks about telling me about the trusted version i hate that it always ask me the untrusted app.
Thanks
Opera Mini setup stuff
Because Opera Mini is cached on Operas servers, you get 3G speeds from a GPRS connection - honest! It's enought to persuade me to go back to my Elf from a Nike, because I think the wifi is more useful than 3G and a slidy keypad!
You need Java or Jbed installed
Clear out all exitsing java apps by deleting the contents of Windows\AppDB
Open Java
From the Menu, select Install..Browser
Go to mini.opera.com
Don't install the version on screen (it has no certificate, is unsigned), click on 'install a previous version' - then you'll get a list of versions that are signed - select the Multiple Certificates one.
Go through the install, check its working, and exit
The attached shortcut will launch opera mini. It assumes that Opera Mini is the first Java app installed. If you have other java apps installed, check the appdb folder and modify the shortcut (copy it to your PC, open Notepad and drag the shortcut into it)
The attached CAB makes Opera Mini the default browser for URLs in mail links etc... it uses Mortscript, which is included. Just install it, but then copy the attached OMInvokeAndPasteScript.mscr to overwrite the existing one in Windows (The new version of mini puts 'www' in front of addresses, this script is modified to remove it when pasting a full link in)
Good luck.

Very Nice!!! Thanks For Sharing I Really Like The Shortcut Is there A way to change the way the icon looks (the internet explorer image)
Thanks
i also use Opera Mini on my Elf all th way... need not to say th advantages, Opera Mobile was just way too much memory hogging n slow-responsive!!
Mini all the way
i have been a fan of opera mini for quite some time now..and the speeds i get over gprs are decent enough for browsing ( and posting here on xda) and downloading small files...
i think however, the choice of Java used does impact the experience...but that is another discussion altogether..
the product is free, with 'almost' regular updates, with hardly any issues for me...

wow - top work TT ... mini is great! I tried and liked Opera Mobile 9.5 ... for about 15 seconds until I'd run out of memory :-S
question regarding your tips on how to change the icon. i too would like to have an opera icon in my HTC Today screen instead of the IE ... but unless I'm missing something, the only way I could do this would be to have the full opera installed and to refer to it in the shortcut file to get the icon.
as the whole thing is several MB, I was pleased to delete it from my device to free up memory. so what's the trick to get an opera icon? does someone (cleverer than me) need to write a little 10kb exe file with the right icon? or has someone already done so ;-)
thanks a lot for the great tips...

I Posted The Link ToThe Opera.exe File Below

you can also rename the file to Opera Mini.exe

Hey!
Try the attached 5.5KB Shell4Icon.dll and tell me if it works !
This is just a res_hacked dll !
And I just thought it would be great if someone expert made from scratch
a *.dll only with resources
as a shell containing the icons we need for shortcuts!
Anyway,
the ID # for the Opera icon is 20797, so your link should be like this:
Code:
"\windows\jbed.exe" -run s0_ ?\Windows\Shell4Icon.dll,-20797
There is also an icon for Messenger you might use, with ID # 20298!
Regards!
ps:Since the poll shows OperaMini as the winner , I'm attaching a combination of 2 OEM Packages for those who want to have OperaMini precooked in their rom!
[Both OperaMini&Esmertec Jbed are older versions but they are lighter than the newer and save enough ROM space!Try&see!]

nice one. actually i just found a solution myself! i forgot all about the nice HTC Home Customizer here on xda ... just installed that temporarily and used it to change the icon to a .png file I found on the internet. easy!
to elaborate a bit further about what i tried this morning (when i should have been working...)
i tried creating my own little exe file with the icon i wanted, to use for the link to opera mini. i used the mortscript.exe, copied it to my desktop and used some software i downloaded (iconchanger38.exe) to change the icon to an opera one.
when viewed on the desktop, it had an opera icon.
when viewed from GSFinder, it had an opera icon.
however, when i tried to select it as a button in my HTC Home launcher, you get the list of programs (where does this list come from? there's no obvious way of browsing to other files that it hasn't found) and there, bizarrely, i now had two choices ... one with IE icon, and one with MortScript icon! neither of which was really what i was looking for.
the program list doesn't list files, with extensions, just a list of programs. i got fed up trying to figure out how to hack this and gave up ...
... until it occurred to me to try the HHC solution which works well.
cheers

yeah that's what i meant
i know the debate which is better is not that easy, but 9.5 build 1938 is fast like lightning, it does open website in a 1-2 seconds with my gprs, so i like it best. opera mini are also great, but using the latest is my habit lol and when decide what to use in a ROM... it's not easy also, so we make it clean and ppl can choose
and with my 8mb PP, opera run very smooth on this tiny elf ..
Got my TP for couple of weeks now. And i love it
But all of a sudden (that means no extra apps installed) Opera quits itself when switching to landscape mode.
Does anybody have the same problem or even better a solution?
Have you installed the latest version? You can check by opening opera:about inside Opera and looking for the Build number.
I'm using Build 1938 which was released for the Diamond but is running just fine on my Touch Pro:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401643
Download and extract "Opera Build 1938 Upgrade", then copy the 3 files (Opera9, OperaL, OperaPreL) into \Windows\. Soft-reset and confirm the build number at opera:about.
Yes I have searched, however the results seem to be conflicting.
I have integrated into my ROM IE 6.0 as well as a Flash Lite 3.1 OEM package I found that I thought had the required ActiveX files and settings that would allow Flash support in Internet Explorer. After trying to view various sites with Flash in them it appears it doesn't work (you just get the banner 'This site requires Flash, click here to download' or something similar).
Now I have spent the last hour or so searching on here and via Google and can't seem to work out if this is actually possible. Some posts I have found seem to say it is possible with Opera but not IE, others say it isn't possible with either and others seem to say with the required ActiveX plugins it should work with IE 6.0?
Does anyone have any definitave answers?
Andy
In Sakajati's HyperDragon IV ROM, the Flash Lite 3.1 ActiveX Player plugin works perfectly with both PIE8.12 & old PIE for WM6. It is a rumor that FL3.1 does not work with pie. The FL3.1 he used is 9.1.115.134. Edit: Try google 'official fliash lite 3.1 cab', you can find this build, a 2MB cab.
Edit: There are two layer's function of FL, HDIV ROM works on both of them, (for both pie & opera, in both FL3.1 cooked-in & seperately installed cases):
Layer 1: .swf files, e.g. www.cnet.com
Layer 2: Stream video like .flv on www.youtube.com
In many cases ppl say it does not work means it only does not work with layer 2. Many reason can cause this. Mostly is RAM issue, coz FL3.1 is a RAM intensive app, check HKLM > Software > Adobe > Flash Lite ActiveX > Memory Settings > Dynamic Memory (in MB), on default it was set to 32 MB. I doubt that if RAM not enought FL does not even launch layer 2.
Beside this there's some hardware driver (like D3D & OpenGL) and also software crash issue may also involved in the performance or functionality of FL3.1.
I'll attatch some screenshots later on.
If everything setting well (like in HDIV ROMs), the YouTube playback quality should be as same as the standalone player, at least I can not tell the difference from my eyes.
Edit: On HDIV Rhodium ROM for example, I don't need to do anything to ensure the playback quality for PIE. But I need to release memory for Opera to playing same quality (like disable m2d, large start menu, shutdown animation, etc.) I think it is because Opera Mobile 9.7b1 itself consumes about 9MB RAM, while PIE8.12 only around 1 MB, the ram needed for FL to play the same .flv is same on PIE & Opera.

Can you post some URLs with Flash content that you know work with the ROM you are running?

I read that, FL3.1 only works with flash8 & minus, if the flash content is flash9, it does not work anyway.
And even for Flash 8,7, or lower, it still can not play back everything. But it plays most .swf and most popular .flv.
Some screenshots here. Most 9f them for Opera, but you can find several for PIE.

If I go here:

I eventually get a box where the Flash animation should be (compared to what I can see via the browser on my PC) and if I press and hold where the outline of the box is I see a popup menu that says 'About Flashlite 3.1 ActiveX Player' but I never get the animation to display. If I click 'About...' it says 'Player Version: 9,1,115,134'

The ROM I used also use Samsung Ominia driver, see also Samsung Ominia Goodies.
I did notice that on WM6.5 ROM, the gpxbooster crashes with flash.(Not tested on other ROMs yet)
Think you have someway to test the D3D driver work or not.
Then install the official FL3.1 distributable player to see does it works to play with local .swf files. (Need to use total commander to associate .swf with the exe)
Install of the distributable player also helps the plugin to work in some cases, & the distributable player itself works (at least as a plugin for .swf).
If it works then the problem is association between plugin and PIE.
If it does not work, you still need to sort it out what is crashed with FL.
In my experience PIE is much easier to work with FL3.1 than Opera.
Edit: BTW suggest to take out everything related to D3D, graphics enhancement, & flash plugin from your ROM. And then easier to test them, bcz all of them works if you install cab & you don't need to reflash the ROM again & again.
In otherways you build a 'naked' ROM, after flashed the ROM first install FL see deoes it work with PIE. If works then install your apps one by one & see which one crashes.
Another thing is that the official Flash7 Player (flash.dll) should also work with PIE.
Any further progress & can you share further information here?
Edit: Avother point is in PIE maybe you need to set in options to let the website know that you are using PIE & not a desktop IE, otherwise the site will ask to install the flash player for desktop. You can still use the 'desktop view' to 'view full versions' after did so.

Do you have local .swf files to test on the StandAlone player? If not find some here:

Just click on the .swf file after download to the phone. Just for probs sorting. If it works on Opera, the problem maybe the association between FL & IE. If it does not even work on Opera, it maybe something conflicts with FL3.1.
And what if you use DotFred's TaskMgr to register that dll file (IEActiveX.dll), and soft reset?

Well I can not figure out more suggestion now. It's whether the OEM package has some shortcomings, or you have something conflict with Flash Lite.
But definitely, Flash Lite 3.1 shall work with both PIE & Opera Mobile. Check here.

Thanks for your efforts so far. I will continue to pursue this as I would like Flash working with IE in my ROM, however it isn't a priority. I'd like to hear from any other chefs that have integrated Flash Lite 3.1 & IE 6.0 into their ROMs and what they had to do to get it working. I am not doing anything that clever in my ROM - just a dump of the official 5.2.19212 WWE ROM and then some re-heating - IE 6.0 included, various updates to OEM stuff and that's really about it.

I am not doing anything that clever in my ROM - just a dump of the official 5.2.19212 WWE ROM and then some re-heating - IE 6.0 included, various updates to OEM stuff and that's really about it.

Hi, very strange thing here: On my Surface, the website www.atv.at (an austrian TV broadcaster, contains many Flash videos) doesnt show the videos, instead an Adobe Flash Button appears. YES, I am using the Desktop IE! And YES, Flash is enabled (it's working on other Websites!)
On the the Surface of my colegue, the videos show up and play!
How is that possible? There are 2 versions of flash right now through a windows update, I tried it with the updated flash player from MS and without (uninstalled the windows update).
So my question is: Can anyone try the site (its in german language, but just klick on the forward buttons to play the videos) and tell me if its working or not?!
And: How can I remediate this?
It was a bit slow to load, but it played for me.
Do you have the Compatibility List Updates option disabled in IE? If so, you may need to manually add the site to the Flash whitelist. Windows RT does not, by default, allow playing Flash on arbitrary sites; MS instead provides a whitelist of sites that are known to work and be safe. This whitelist is part of the Compatibility List for IE, which by default will be updated automatically from MS (but you can turn the automatic updating off when you set up the machine, in which case sites added since your system was built won't be included).
got it
All right guys, found the issue: When you startup IE the first time it asks you about "recommended settigs" - as an IT pro, I don't use that on desktop machines and so do I on the surface. But that was indeed the reason why IE didn't download the compatibility list. After resetting IE you'll get asked again and this time the special website is in the list and flash works.
BUT: Didn't MS say that this compatibilty list is just for use on the Modern-UI IE 10? From my experience now that's wrong: It also influences the desktop version!
Yours B.
