In a quest to make google voice (GV) just as good, or better, than sprint visual voicemail, do the following:
1.) setup call forwarding in GV so you keep the functionality of your sprint number and set up your greeting.
2.) under voicemail settings in GV, check send sms to your (sprint) number. uncheck send email. (by using the sms feature, you will get an 'instant' GV app notification on your phone. Otherwise, the shortest refresh interval for the GV app is 5 min, and it will take 5 min for GV app to notify you. By unchecking email setting in GV you will not get an additional notification via email on your phone if you sync to gMail like i do)
3.) download/install the GV app from the market. Set it up on your phone and choose a 60min refresh interval, just for good measure.
4.) Disable the default messaging notification, since you will use Handcent instead.
5.) Download/install Handcent.
6.) place a program shortcut to GV app on your homescreen, similar to the default Visual Voicemail shortcut
7.) call yourself from another phone and leave a voicemail. You will see that you get an SMS and a GV app notification.
8.) Finally, blacklist your GV number within Handcent.
You will now have near instant GV app notification of a voicemail. And there will be no redundant SMS or email notification of a voicemail. Go to your GV app shortcut just like you would Sprint Visual Voicemail.
Now you have 'Visual Voicemail', along with a not-so-accurate transcription service.
(btw, I'm using Damage ROM and notice no call forwarding delays)
Ah, hah! Blacklisting is a great idea! Thanks for the tip! Any idea why my Google Voice might not be playing my custom greeting? I've recorded it and set it to play both online and over the phone, but I am still getting the default greeting.
I don't get it. If you blacklist the text notification how are you getting notified? Tried this. Dont think it works. The only notification you will get is the one the the google voice app will give you while checking every 5 min and your wasting battery checking that often. Id rather just get the text notification and you have the option to call your voicemail number from that text to get your msg.

Did you turn on SMS setting on your GV account? With that on I can set my GV app refresh interval to 60MIN and still get an instant GV notification, while blacklisted .
How to Forward to GV
Guys and Gals if you call *28XXX-XXX-XXXX The X's being your GV number this will forward your calls to GV when not answered do this from the phone you want forwarded and by the way this does work kinda like it better than sprints version the text is kinda neat to or transcribing of the call.

I think the gvoice app watches your text messages and will "wake up" when you get one from your gvoice number. Make sure you are not using a task killer and if you are then put gvoice on the ignore list.
This will work nicely unless you do not care about the transcription feature.
so if the google voice app gets shut down by android for memory reasons you could end up with no instant notification?
Why would I want to download Handcent? its garbage...

If you are using Handcent, you already have notifications turned off for the default messaging app. So you do get a text message there, but you never know about it. You also don't clog your Handcent inbox with voicemail texts. This is working great for me so far. Just make sure you properly setup your Google Voice first.

so you can blacklist the googlevoice number and won't recieve a notification about the text message but the gvoice app will still see a text came in and notify you.
He is just showing you a way so you don't get 2 notifications if you want to be notified immediately when you receive a voicemail.

Oh gotcha. When I had text messaging on before I was always notified instantly when I had a voicemail...hmmm weird. I turned it off cause its annoying.

i think that's the biggest problem with everyone's GV solutions is you assume we have Google voice... but until we finally want to try it for some reason, sign up and then as Google says "We will let you know as soon as we open up the service to more users." I'm not one to sign up for something i don't want to use or try so i cannot have already been waiting and gotten my GV invitation... now there might actually be a reason I'd want to try it but i'm stuck waiting

I just wanted to post this even though some people know about it already. But I was also on this quest to get quasi-native mms/voicemail on my Hero. The problem was the mms handling in the google voice app (v0.2 since im on 2.1) sucks. The only thing I liked was that when someone left me a voicemail i could listen to it right in the Google Voice app (sort of like VVM and I thought a lot faster.)
I turned off notifications in the HTC messenger and stuck with google voice while having all my voicemail's in a filter sent directly to my phone with a script I wrote running on my web server at home. It was pretty cool because I could be watching TV and get text messages and voicemail notifications pop up on XBMC, I would then look down at my phone and notice the filtered email just arrived with a link... all tagged with a filter called "voicemail". I won't go into this setup unless others want it, but this all led me directly to something even better.
gvmax.com. It was the answer to everything. Now, I don't have to worry about any text messaging service. I just use a chat client. All my texts and voicemails come through gtalk, and I don't have to wait 15 freaking minutes for the google voice app to check for new messages, or worry about dual messages in multiple programs.
gvmax routes them directly to my web server INSTANTLY so I still get the notifications while watching tv. I can actually see a teaser of the text message. voicemails go to gtalk with a tinyurl, voicemails also go to my email, mms comes in as a new chat, and I can reply to the person directly over gtalk. To be honest, there are times I am chatting with someone for a several minutes before I realize they think they are text messaging me. OHHH and it doesn't cut you off in size to 2 mms (320 characters) at a time. It is an UNBELIEVABLE setup, and you can route your mp3 voicemail downloads wherever you want. I am guessing you could put them in any folder on your SD (including vvm) and have it come up just about any program you like.
It works, I think, better than the gv app as you can still call people directly from gtalk. You can even email or @reply them on twitter and it will go right to their phone.
Anyway, I discovered that free service from someone on xda and figured I would bring it up again because I know a lot of people missed it. It may not seem like it at first, but routing your mms/voicemail over a php script (http-post) with gvmax has changed my life. Since I use a chat program for everything now, it really is sort of like the messaging on the pre or iphone.
Anyway, try it out if you have time. It is really easy to setup. I can tell you I haven't missed a call or voicemail since because every computer/tv/phone I have all receive the messages. So when I have my daughter wants to play a game on my phone and I am waiting on a text I just pick up my laptop and start chatting with it. Saves a lot of time arguing.

Sorry, I missed this post. You are right, I always forget that google voice is not open yet. Well I tell you what. Go put your name on the invite list. Hell, sign up a few email addresses. They usually come in a week or so.
Until then I think I have 3-4 invitations left. Keep in mind, gv users cannot invite you. we had to sign up our email addresses to get these just like you would. It is not like we get a gv account and then can invite 10 friends. So signing yourself up is probably just as quick as finding someone who has extra invites left. They are like $5 on ebay but like I said. It takes a week MAYBE two to get an invite.
I would send you an invite but i dont have any yet.
You dont need an invite if you want to use it for voicemail. As was discussed on one of the other Google Voice threads, all you have to do is download the app from the Market. You have a phone running on Google software, your invite is installing the app. After the that just follow the directions to set it up. I have never been invited to use GV, and I successfully use it everyday. And thanks to the OP's idea, I have it set up perfect now. Good idea on the blacklisting, I was using Handcent already anyways.
bought my invite on ebay, cost $1.30 and paid through paypal.
Didn't feel comfortable asking anyone here for an invite as I haven't been active (lurker) for too long.
bought the invite and setup GV in under 10 minutes this way.
no waiting for invites
if you're desperate for GV for the voicemail, I'd say this is the optimal way to go.

Like many members here in the USA, I am on the $25 unlimited data plan that comes with 400 SMS messages. I plan on using my Google Voice account, to send the bulk of my SMS messages, sense it is free(cheaper then $40). My question, is there anyway to get your Google Voice SMS messages to show up under the "Messaging" app, as normal? Currently when you get the notification, Google Voice is opened when you click the notification.
I do get notifications, that a new message has arrived, and it auto checks every 5-minutes. Not sure if there is anyway to lower the time frame.
I do get asked if I would like to send the SMS via my normal number or my Google Voice number.
So the integration is already pretty good, but I did not know if there are some mods out there to make it even better, or if any others have some idea's.
there is a unofficial version of google voice in the market and it checks evry minute...but wen i had the official version my sms came thru my reg message inbox and in the google voice app inbox..i jus got the unofficial app cuz its better to me but i havnt sent a message out thru it yet since i got it..im gonna see if it comes to my reg message inbox wen i receive a txt...hope i made it clear wat i was tryin to say.
and yes it does come to the messaging app..i jus chk... but it still gives u a notification in the gv app also
Set Google Voice to e-mail your Gmail account upon an SMS. You'll get the e-mail notification much more quickly, as it's pushed. Not the best solution as you get 2 notifications for each text, but it sure beats getting a text late.
What i did was send all my txt msgs to gmail and disabled sms notifications and status bar notifications and auto refresh google voice app every15 minutes.
This way i dont have to be checking google voice app(since it's not push) and i can reply to sms directly from gmail
Yea I just completly disabled notifications in Google Voice. Then from Google Voice on the PC, I went to Settings>Voicemail & SMS, and chose to forward all SMS to my email.
Now I only should get one notification. The notification will open gmail ofcourse. But I prefer to reply via Google Voice, as the interface is a little better.
Here's what I did.
1. Go into settings on your computer (not phone) and click forward to e-mail.
2. Go to your gmail account, then settings, and allow IMAP forwarding
3. On your phone go to market and download k9 beta
4. Setup the app, directions are shown when you start up.
By doing this you will have instant push messaging through your e-mail. Whenever you receive a text message, it will be forwarded to your phone instantly via IMAP where you will be notified by K9. You can reply directly to the e-mail which will text the person back. The only reasons left to keep Google voice are for sending the first text (You start the conversation) and for calling other people.
P.S. I recommend turning off inbox notifications/checking for Google Voice so you wont waste your battery or get double notifications.
I hope that wasn't too confusing, I'm about to head home and I thought I'd leave this here for you .
EDIT: I am 100% for making a new app or even integrating Google Voice directly into the OS. I would specifically like to see a contact by contact option to call with the Google Voice number Always, Sometimes, or Never. That would be immensely helpful.

This is what i do and have found it to be the best option, as the email notifications are pretty much instantaneous.
Then i just delete the email thread when i'm done with the conversation.
I uninstalled the official Google Voice App, and gave "GV" a spin. I like the 1-minute notification option, which is much better then being notified via email. The shortcuts are very nice also (long hold empty space on a Home Screen). The options under GV Shortcut are "Directly call through GV| Directly SMS through GV| Open SMS conversations| Quickly compose a GV SMS| Open your GV voicemail| Open your GV call log. Open SMS conversations, is essentially the same as the "Messaging" app, so its a handy shortcut where you can read or choose a new contact to SMS. You also get the popup when you click on a contact, to use GV or normal messaging. I am not using this app for calls.
The only nag I have with the program, is that is rarely crashes. I also can not find a way to change the notification. Currently it just vibrates three times(along with the popup in the notification bar), so no sound. Overall a very handy program.

Personally I got quite annoyed with GV as it continually crashed on me. I have to say that e-mail with K9 forwarding is the best way to go about it.
Excuse my ignorance, but isn't K9 doing the same thing the official GMAIL app is doing? Doesn't it provide instant push?
I'm not entirely sure of the difference between the two. I believe I've read that the Gmail sync is not entirely push but rather a consistant querey to the server, but I am not sure to the validity of that. Personally, I like the layout and overall scheme of K9 in comparison to the Gmail app.
gv never crashes on me(knock on wood lol) i like this 1 better only bcuz u can make free calls thru gv if u only hav a data plan or if ur only usin the g1 thru wifi and dnt hav a min plan but hav a gv acct..u can call for free usin sipdroid-gv and gismo5 but it has to be the unofficial gv..jus a way to get around havin a minute plan thru tmobile..cuz u can call and txt for free thru gv..all u need is data plan or wifi

yea if u hav a gizmo5 acct jus add a new number in the gv app and put ur sip# from gizmo5 as the new number and the calling method shud b set to "call back"..make sure ur signed in giz cuz it will ask u to verify the number..dwnload sipdroid frm the market,open it hit menu and enter acct settings, server: proxy01.sipphone.com, Port:5060, Protocol:UDP, u shud see a green dot wen connected and u shud b able to call thru 3g or wifi for free using ur gv number

While it doesn't help you any, running baksmali on the app reveals that it does push notifications under Eclair. Too bad it's not going to be any help for you or me for a while.

Any chance you could elaborate on this a bit? Gmail push notificaqtions arrive over XMPP, I erote a basic client to test this. Are google voice notifications also being pused over the XMPP service now as well? If so it wouldn't be hard to tap into this. Of course if we all get eclair eventually, It might be a wasted effort but it still interest me.

This sounds interesting. Is there a different Google Voice for Enclair or something?
I have linked my Google Voice to my Sprint line, but now every text message I receive goes to the Google Voice app, as well as the Text app on the Nexus S. Is there some way to DISABLE texts to the Google Voice app? I'm not a fan of the interface.
Everything is going to your Google voice inbox so you have to Unselect notifications in your Google voice app and may sure text messages is select it.

Im having this EXACT problem.
I enabled Google Voice Intigration for my Sprint number. Everything was working normally for a day or two. Txt messages were going to the normal messaging app.
But now txt messages ONLY go to the Google Voice app. Messing with notifications does nothing. My normal messaging app no longer receives the txt's at all.
Is there anyway to fix this? I can live with using the Google Voice app, but id much rather use the normal app.
EDIT: FIXED IT!!! ZOMG!
I didnt have this checked on my Google Voice settings (for some reason it is unchecked by default!)

I don't have that option in my settings. When I sign out of voice on my phone, I miss all calls and don't get texts. Very weird.

Works perfect for me.
Go into the Google Voice app on the phone, and turn off all the notifications.
Then goto settings in voice.google.com and enable the one setting that i have circled in the screenshot above.
This problem frustrated me for HOURS yesterday until i found that one setting.

another thing to look out for: I've noticed several times, usually when reinstalling the Google Voice app, it will disable receiving sms messages to my cell.
If you're not receiving texts for any reason, I'd check your google voice settings (on the web: google.com/voice) then, on the website go to Settings > Phones > Edit > Text Settings (check).

However, I want my phone to receive MMS/SMS the way it normally (used to) so I can still use handcent.
This whole thing pisses me off to no end. NONE of the settigs are working right. I'm now missing ALL calls and texts. Totally disabled GV on phone and web and still nothing...

So you *want* to recv all texts thru handcent, but you're not? If that's the case, it sounds like the forward sms setting isn't checked (my post above).

I just want to point out that NONE of this worked for me. The ONLY way I was able to make it so that I was getting text notifications and receiving phone calls was to completely disassociate my number with GV and sign out of the GV app on my phone.
No matter what combo of settings I tried, I would miss every single phone call (phone would never ring), not be notified of voicemails (even though email and text were chosen as notifications), and my texts would all go to the GV app but it would never notify me even if I had the settings right on the website and the phone.
I have also tried all of the mentions above, with no success. I actually sent texts to myself from my computer, and tested a ton of combinations of settings.
The main thing I've learned is that it is impossible (so far) to receive a text to the STOCK app, and NOT to Google Voice.
I changed settings on GV from my phone app, as well as on my GV on the computer.

Yes if you ported your number all your texts go through Google voice now.
You PORTED your number. Any calls or texts go through Google voice now and are handled by Google. Your texts and voicemails are saved in the Voice cloud.
If you don't want to use Voice as your messaging app just turn off notifications.
Its really not that complicated.

Hello, coming from the EVO, and now the awesome Nexus-S 4G, I am used to the stock Visual Voicemail that Sprint provides on the EVO's, and with the Nexus I just setup Google Voice. Some issues and questions please.
- My texts are going to the Voice app, not GO SMS anymore ? I only want texts using the GO app, not Google Voice.
- It seems I did use Google Voice like a year ago, and I have a boatload of message popping up from last year, how do I delete all these old voice mail messages ?
- Is there a way for the little Voice app icon, to display a # next to it of unread messages ? Like if I miss a text message it will show a little number 1 at the top corner of the app icon of how many missed texts I have, can the voice icon show that too ?

I logged into my Google account on my computer, found the settings options, but some things still seem strange ?
My text messages are still going to Google Voice, and not even showing up in my GO SMS text app at all, or even the stock Android messaging, they only going to Google voice ? I did log into my gmail account on my computer and disabled texts, but it didn't seem to take ?

Go into the app on the phone and delete the app data. Update the app in the market and then you will be able to "Skip" the GV Sprint integration and use it only for Voicemail.
I probably won't get back to this post until tomorrow so hopefully someone else can guide you.

Yes I want Google Voice as just a visual voice mail like i had with my EVO, I don't want Google Voice used for anything else besides that.
2 ways to do this, i've done it many times, lol.
1.) open gvoice settings in the browser from a computer and click deactivate google voice on this phone. You should then see the link change to "activate google voice on this phone." you will also see below it: deactivate google voicemail on this phone, that tells you that voicemail is still on. I think you want both of hte text message boxes unchecked as well. save it, that should do it. this is how i'm setup, i only use it like VVM.
2.) clear data on the google voice app on the phone. launch the app. when you get to the activation part, hit the SKIP button, basically it sets you up without using the extended gvoice features, select "do not use google voice to make any calls." finish the setup wizard, should be good from there.

But I do like to have sms chats with my cousins and relatives from time to time.
Does anyone know of an app that uses data plan for sending and RECEIVING free sms? I have tried a couple of apps that uses google voice for doing that, but both were just ONE SIDED i.e. I can send sms to others, but when they REPLY, nothing happens. Has anyone used "GoVoice" before for sending and receiving sms? Am I doing something wrong?
I have heard about jaxtr sms service, but unfortunately they dont have an app for windows mobile
Any suggestions, anyone?

If you are out of contract with AT&T, tried their pre-pay Go Phone program: $50 for unlimited talk & text. If not, here is a work around that I have used which will give you "free" text.
Here is my work around. I use Google Voice. Set Google Voice to send text to your Hotmail account that you associated with your phone. When someone text to your Google Voice number, it INSTANTLY goes to your Hotmail. Your Windows Phone will receive a notification in the email live tile. You tap on the email tile to read the text and then reply by email. When you reply to that mail on your phone, your recipient will receive a TEXT reply. Voila! Free text. The only drawback is your text number is the Google Voice number, not your phone number.

Hey, thanks for replying. This is a great idea. I dont mind having a different texting number, and this way its actually easy for me, as I can choose who gets it. Actually, I just bought the Titan, so my contract with AT&T just began. Go-Phone is out of question.
I tried looking into it, but couldnt find the settings for texting in my google voice account. Would you mind telling me the steps involved in setting up the account.
In my google voice settings, I only have the option tabs of Phone, Voicemail, Groups, Voicemail Widgets and Billing. Which of these tabs is supposed to have the texting option?
Do I have to activate google voicemail on my cell for this to work, because I am pretty satisfied with the AT&T voicemail service atm.

I find it odd that AT&T doesn't let you block SMS from phone numbers. I can do it with Verizon...
Another way you can try is to use AOL Instant Messenger. If you add a contact with "+18145551234" (814 is the example area code I am using) and then unblock them, you can add any SMS number world wide as far as I know, and it doesn't cost a thing. I use it to text my mom from my Grandmothers "dead zone" all of the time.
You can look here at AT&T's site for more info on simply blocking the SMS numbers in question.

Thanks for replying. I know AT&T can block sms coming from a spam number, but in my case I am talking about my friends. I am a very friendly person (I sometimes regret that) and so I have large friend circles (i mean like really huge numbers). And the thing is that this started just as a joke for them. One person told another that I am being charged for sms, and he after doing one sms to me, told another person, and the process repeats. Almost all of my friends did just 2 or less sms to me, the bill on my side was big. So instead of asking AT&T to stop sms from like hundred different numbers, I blocked all incoming and outgoing sms.
Can you elaborate on using AOL instant messenger. I am sorry for asking this, but am new to this Windows Phone and English isnt my first language, so its a little difficult for me to understand.

Great! It sounds very attractive.
I have no problem making an SMS application, but it will have to be a paid service. aka, you'll have to pay per msg.

That's weird - I never heard of an operator to charge for incoming SMSs (only outgoing). It's logical that only outgoing calls and SMSs are supposed to be charged, because the incomming ones are already payed by the sender.. (of course, international roaming is a special case..)
About the actual question, in the last 10 years I saw most companies that offered free SMS sending (over Internet) dissapearing - probably it was not effective from a economic point of view, and also for 5 or 6cents a SMS, most people doesn't bother tosearch a free service anymore..

Can you make one application that uses Google voice services to send and receive sms? The app which I am using "GoVoice" is just one sided, that is I can send an sms to someone, but when they reply, I am not getting anything. Can you fix this and make an app that works in two way sms communication?
I do not mind if the whole conversation is in the application instead of the default messaging app. I also dont mind having a different number (my google voice number) for messaging.

Arghhhhhh,
Just found out, that if you get a new number, the texting option magically appears in your account.
With the options available, GoVoice app works wonders. Finally free sms.

If your friends have iPhones/Androids/Blackberries/WP7s you could get Whatsapp, but you'll need a data plan to use it. It's basically a free texting service, though after the first year you have to pay something like $2-3 dollars per year.
I have heard about it, but as far as I know, its more like a messenger. Other need to have it installed on their devices too for the messages to work. And they are not sms.
Anyways I found what I was looking for, free sms app (GoVoice), which uses google voice for two way communication with others via sms.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been too busy to check back. I see that you have found a way by using an app. To clarify my work around, all you have to do is set your Google Voice account to forward all messages to your Hotmail account. This means that when someone text your Google Voice number, the text is forwarded to your Hotmail. If you keep wifi on in your phone, you will get a live tile notification saying that you have mail. Go into mail to read and reply. Your reply to the text messages will be received by the other person as a text messages. So there is no need for a third party app.
I got a bit of a serious issue.
Sprint is obviously GV integrated now. I'd like to keep GV for my voicemails, but its also taking over my texts.
At one point, I had the app installed and set to not bother me and notify the regular messaging app of texts. I have a privacy box setup w/ the regular SMS app so this was not OK. Also, it didn't forward texts to regular SMS a lot of times. I would miss peoples text and I find myself checking voice.google.com manually knowing it may not have come through to the regular SMS app.
I figure, oh well, I'll just listen to VMs through gmail. I deinstalled the app. And unchecked everything possible in voice.google.com settings for texts. Yet it is still happening.
No GV on my phone. Yet, both incoming and outgoing texts are in voice.google.com. Sometimes I'll send a text, be expecting a response and it never comes. I check voice.google.com and it is there.
Is it even possible to exnay Google Voice from my texts and keep just voicemail? Or do I have to switch voicemail providers?
Edit: CRAP!!!! Now I have a *86 voicemail notification that I can't clear!

The only way to correct all of these errors you're experiencing is to undo your Sprint/GV integration. You can make this change via voice.google.com. You will also want to make sure that you disable forwarding to your mobile number via the website, so that when your phone forwards calls to voicemail, your phone doesn't end up going through two ring cycles for a call you don't want to/can't answer.
From what I understand in your post, you want to have Google Voice handle Voicemail, but have everything else handled via the standard apps on the phone. In order to do this, you want re-install the app on your phone and skip the integration option that Google Voice presents to you during the initial setup of the app. Also make sure to choose not to have Google Voice make any calls, and then set it up to handle your voicemail.
The way this works is that your calls and texts go to your Sprint number, (which will no longer be integrated with Google Voice.) The text messages will feed straight into the standard SMS app. Calls will route normally, but if you send the call to VM or it rings enough times to send to VM, the call will forward to your GV number which will be acting merely as a voicemail box. The caller will leave a message and it will notify you. Now, if you have done the OTA ICS update, you can set up Google Voice to integrate even better and show the VM's in the call log, removing your need to go into the GV app at all. I hope this helps.
