I just ordered a T-mobile Desire and I wanted to get a decent sized SD card for it to take away with me. I had a couple of questions though:
I wondered if I needed any special type of SD card. I looked on Dabs and they have SD cards that have a different class such as class 2, 3, 10, 8 etc.
I wondered if the Desire had some of the same issues as the HD2 has had. That if you use larger SD cards, they might not work or somehow drain the battery. So I wondered if it's best to keep the size down?
Lastly, I wondered where is best to buy SD cards from in the UK to get the best deals?
I also wondered where is best to buy second batteries on price as I am going away and definitely want a 2nd battery to take with me.
Cases too..... are they worth getting?
Thanks

Regarding the SD Cards, "Class" is attributed to the speed of the SD Card eg. Class 8 has a higher data transfer rate than Class 2. So when you can, always go for the highest class memory card as this will improve transfer speeds and also if you use Apps2sd on Android (install apps on sd card) it will result in better performance. I have no idea about the issue regarding battery drain, however, I have never noticed any visible changes in battery life using large (16/32gb) cards in my Nexus One over smaller ones.
As for batteries, cases etc. Ebay is always my first stop for accessories. I have bought numerous items from reputable sellers at prices far lower than specific online retailers. Don't be sucked in by gimmicky branding such as "invishield" or "raptor skin" etc, you'll find they all come from the same Hong Kong factories. That said, you tend to get better finishes on the more expensive products but I am using a silicone skin that cost £2.85 and bought 5x screen protectors for 99p and everything is sweet!!
Enjoy the Desire.
Regards.
thanks for the help on the class thing. I didn't know! I'll have to find where in the UK is best to buy the cheapest 16 gig SD card
dunno about apps2sd but when playing music I only have a class 2 SD which set me back about £22 for a 16gb one from ebay UK seller and it all works fine. Though as far as I am aware the better the class the faster the SD card I think ill only use mine for music atm and happy with what its doing
If you can afford it though go for the best class you can!
I'll have to have a look on ebay. I think I'll look for a silicon case for it if I can.
I'll also look on ebay for a 16 gig card too..... thanks.
ebay or ebuyer are probably the cheapest for that sort of stuff unfortunately dabs is quite expensive
I want to go for a 16GB card but I'm also wanting a fast one but struggling with finding anything above a Class 2. Can anyone point me at any 16GB Class 4, 6 or 8's they come across.
Many thanks!

The best price I found for official HTC batteries was Handtec. Even with their postage, it's still very good value (total £18.19) and they say they have them in stock.

That isn't micro SD.
I'm too looking out for a class 8 (or so) microSD card that is 16GB. Not had much luck.
Thank goodness Mr goose added a link. I just checked again what he bought and yes, I got it wrong. Thank goodness for double checking and Mr goose adding a link!
Back to looking.
I currently have a Sandisk Class 4 8Gb Micro SDHC in my Blackberry Bold, which I will probably transfer to my Desire (when I get it).
Do you think this would be fast enough for Apps2SD (when the Desire gets rooted)?
What is the fastest class out there at the moment?
I will eventually buy a 16 or 32Gb one I think, but will stick to the 8Gb at the moment.

I saw some class 8 cards......
Just to let you guys know you don't really need class 8.
I have a class 2 16gb card. Apps2SD was fine on the G1 and ran like they were on the actual phone (even though people recommend 4 or 6).
The data transfer rate is also fine.
16GB MicroSDHC Cards on Amazon
I had a little look around last week and found the following speedy, but expensive 16GB cards on Amazon:
Transcend 16 GB Class 6 microSDHC Flash Memory Card £52.67
KINGSTON 16GB microSDHC Class 10 Flash Card £85.11
Personally, I feel that's too much money. I think it's a better idea to come down a size to 8GB, because you can find the following:
Transcend 8 GB Class 6 microSDHC Flash Memory Card £13.99
You can buy several 8GB cards for the price of those 16GB jobbies if you don't mind swapping them. Also, time will eventually bring the price of those 16GB high speed cards down to a more sensible level, if you're prepared to wait.
I haven't yet decided whether or not to replace the supplied 4GB card, but if I do, it'll be one of those <£15 8GB cards.
I would have posted the above as links, however, this board thinks I'm trying to post spam. So you'll have to paste the above descriptions into amazon.co.uk and search for these yourself.

I'm not saying it would be a problem for you but you've already got a Desire yes? You are aware that the memory card is not "hot swappable" as the battery has to be removed to get the card out?
What I am saying though is, personally, it would drive me nuts.
Kingston have recently released a class 10 16gb microsd, but as you can imagine, it's a bit pricey! Most retailers online have it for sale at about £85-90.
Hy guys, I dont have much experience in micro sdhc. Do you think this is genuine and a good buy?

For a change they both look good. Both have good feedback and you have a UK address for both if anything goes wrong.
i don't think anyone will bother wasting time faking 8 GB cards, they are so small
the only time you want to be sure is when you buy 32 GB
even 16 GB are very common now
I heard good things about SanDisk but cant find for samsung. The problem is that on webpage of San Disk I cant find a card that looks like the one hes selling so a questiond is it genuine.
Both sellers are 'eBay Top-rated seller', my opinion is that the card is genuine.
Just find you local computer store and buy the SD card from them
I don't recommend buying memory cards from eBay unless from reputable seller; too many scams
looks like a genuine and the seller has a good rating
I do think this is genuine

Not sure about the Samsung one as I've never actually seen them in a retail outlet, but the SanDisk one looks like the real deal, it's exactly the same as my own, and the packaging is the same as what's currently in the shops here. I'd recommend it, even though it's a class 4 I got read speeds of 16 and write speeds of 11 with mine.
Here's a link to the site I usually buy from, probably not as cheap as UK one's but occasionaly they do some crazy special offers,

I would completely avoid using ebay for SD cards! They are alot cheaper but you will be lucky to get a genuine card, Ive heard that over 90% are fake. Often you will be lucky to get 2GB on a card and it will probably break within a week.
"This is a brand 16GB Class 10 Micro-SD memry card and comes supplied with a full sized SDHC adaptor and comes in a memory card case with no other retail packaging. All of our memory is 1000% genuine. This 16GB memory cards use Intel memory chips.
Please note: printing on the memory card may differ slightly from our image."
wow 1000% genuine. that's a whole 10x more genuine than an actual genuine one!
I might be cynical but if the seller uses bad English and grammar in his advert I would be careful! Also if they are genuine cards why would the printing differ?
Best spending a little extra and buying from a trustworthy website.
I am using a patriot class 10 16gb off amazon for £26 which I'd recommend without hesitation
The joyflash one looks more legitimate as they are a known company.
However that patriot one just posted is cheaper.
What difference do the brands make I know sandisk and kingston are the best known, but what differences is there between them 2 and the joyflash and patriots?
I've used Sandisk, Kingston and a couple of other ones in my desire HD and best one I have found so far is Lexor 16gb class 4 , quite fast for copying files, HD video records without stuttering and for £14.99 off play it was a bargain
Remember that class speeds are a minimum, known brands are more likely, in my experience, to understate the class thus you know a sandisk class 6 card is going to be a fair bit faster than a no make class 6
I've got a 16 GB SanDisk microSD Card in my DHD.
It's reliable, cheap and the speeds are descent.
I would post you a link to amazon.com, but it looks like I am not allowed to do this right now with my few posts^^

I'm using one of these and for 30 Euro you will hardly get anything better. Don't expect any super performance though, it performs exactly as advertised: ~11MB/s write speed.
Why do you need such fast sd cards? How oftern do you plan on transfering large files in a hurry? Personally when I transfer something from my phone I just leave it charging while it does it. What's the hurry? You can still use your phone while it's doing it.

I would hazard a guess it's more about apps2sd and dalvik2sd. Whilst I personally think that on this phone apps2sd is something that isn't worth bothering with, if you are then you want the fastest card you can get to avoid lag.
I forget who said it but I saw recently the comment "you all moaned when you had no internal storage so we got 1GB now no one wants to use it".
I agree though Dave, when I'm doing SD backups to PC I use it as an excuse to grab yet another brew.
title says it all, i want to get a new micro SD card cuz i dont have enough space for my music on my 16GB so i wantex to know if brand really matters when buying micros cuz i can get a cheaper price on smaller name brands. so, opinions?

I would say it depends on where you buying them from. I would never buy a micro sd card from ebay or similar sites because they might say Samsung on them and you can get them from real cheap, You wouldn't know if they are REAL samsung micro sd cards.
I usually buy mine from newegg.com and they start at $10 for 16gb
I can't say what the difference is to the phone. I bought a 32GB PNY class 10 so I would be able to cut the time it takes to download from my computer to the card with a reader. I have a usb3 port and usb3 reader on my PC which is used mostly for photography. But when I transfer music and movies to my card for my phone it is faster by three fold.
The faster the card, really the better. If you get some random off brand, who knows where that card came from, and if the speed rating is even accurate. Some places house brands are pretty good though, I dunno who makes Microcenter's memory but they are very cheap and have yet to have a problem with them. However the real issue would be reliability. It's always a good idea to backup your card, but I rather have my data and photos on a name I can trust. 60 bucks for the PNY 32gb class 10 was a good deal for me.
On this particular phone, you can consider the SD card like your computer's hard drive. Would you really go get some off-brand from ebay for your PC to save a few dollars? I know I wouldn't. Not worth the headache of losing important data.
I understand faster cards works better. However, I never really notice any difference in speed in my class 4, class 6 or class 10 in Galaxy 4g. I do notice little different in my galaxy s2. I can see the difference when I run benchmarks but in my opinion the speed of card also depends on speed of your device.
i would love to get a PNY one, but ive bought three usb drives from them and all of them habe literally fallen apart...

I would agree with this. The name only is relevant if your buying from a unknown vendor. But if your going with newegg or some other online retailer other than some random ebay auction as long as it is the size you want I dont think it really matters.
The class of the sdcard is somewhat releveant depending on what you are doing with it. The typical android user will not notice that much of a increase of a class 10 over a class 4. But if your taking bunches of photos and videos or playing videos on your phone the class ten are going to perform "better".
Just to reiterate the name brand isnt as much of a issue if you are buying from a legit source. I bought a dane elctric one several years back and haven't had any problems other than the adapter went out. The card itself works flawlessly.
for short, i would buy a memory card with reasonable price and wouldn't easily break ;-)

My PNY 32GB class 10 speed.
Sequential
21.59MB/s read - 11.55MB/s write
This is using a 50MB file.
I would like to test the 4k transfers, but in order to test with a file size less than 50MB I would have to wipe the card. I'll do it just not any time real soon.

It really depends on how exactly you are using your sd card. I know in the OP you said you have a lot of music. Do you typically clear all of your music and transfer all new stuff to the phone?
I have been using a sandisk class 6 for quite some time now and I absolutely love it. It is perfect for my needs. But I do not do a lot of heavy music on my sd card. I have read that even the class 10 Lexar sd cards have terrible random speeds, so I would definitely avoid them at all costs.

This site has a really good deal on a class 4 32gb for today only. I order from them quite a bit. The only issue I ever have is sometimes it takes a while to be delivered.
avoid amazon? or..
if I order from amazon, should I be wary of the brand name? like, have some of you bought via amazon what appeared to be a kingston or whatever known brand, only to find it probably is not?
I read the advice about watching the source carefully....
I have not ever had that issue with amazon before. I guess that it is possible but very unlikely in my opinion.
Its not like ebay where i would never trust that it is legitimate. I have ordered quite a bit from amazon without a single hitch or mistake.
Always be wary of ordering online though... because it can happen.

As long as it is from amazon and not a store. But again amazon is better about policing its stores than ebay is. I have bought from amazon many times and not once had a problem with getting a different product then what I ordered.
that's comforting. so I shall order the sandisk 32gb microsd from them. not bad for 25 bucks I guess. I hear it works fine in the Galaxy s 4G.

It looks like a good deal for me. It will work well for the phone and it is good if it's not a counterfeited one. Sandisk MicroSD are known to be counterfeited a lot, especially on eBay.
Btw, you don't need a class 10 card. For whatever you do with your phone, you don't need to write in 10MB/s. 1080p video from the G2, for example, has a bit rate of only 2.5MB/s.
edit: I found the same microSD, sold by the same merchant, and cheaper at Amazon UK

The cheapest seller (currently Onebo, selling at £15) has only a 3.5/5 star rating, only 25% positive review. Some of the buyers complain that the microSD doesn't even have a Sandisk logo. I am not quite sure you want to buy from this seller.
I really recommend clicking the "63 new" line, them scroll down choosing Amazon UK as a seller. It's more expensive, but you're sure that you don't buy a fake card.
Regarding 64GB and class 10, it's totally your choice. 64 GB sure can store lots of stuff, and you can copy (from the computer) to the card quite fast.
In the other hand, 64GB class 10 card is about 3-4 times more expensive than the 32GB class 4 counter part. Not the most cost efficient option. In additional, the phone won't be able to utilize the class 10 bandwidth in most of your daily activities.
Edit: I bought a 32GB class 4 Kingston for HTC Vision, at $30 (around £15) shipped and sold by Amazon.com

I usually buy all my memory cards from play.com
Used to be fast shipping but not anymore.
I've had so many phones in the past, but all the memory cards i have bought from here always works (i recommend you choose the sandisk cards)

The only two manufacturers that make 64GB cards are Kingmax (who built the card in the first place) and SanDisk (who doesn't make anything above a Class 6), and neither cards are Class 10. I'm actually pretty pleased with the 64GB card in my Doubleshot.
I just got one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00569J5E2/ref=ox_ya_os_product
Samsung 16GB class 10 for £17.
4EXT backs up 3 times quicker than the supplied Samsung 8GB class 2,
GTA3 1.1 is a bit smoother when driving quickly
It appears the UI and system apps that touch the SD are a bit more snappy. ie, gallery.
They do a 32GB bit I think the max speeds are a bit lower.

About dealextreme: buying from that site is pretty much a hit-and-miss. I have actually bought a lot of stuff from there. They're cheap, but also terribly slow at shipping. They also don't usually have goods in stock, and they backorder from the suppliers. NEVER buy there if you are in hurry, never.
Especially about memory cards, you never know if you're gonna get a genuine or a fake item. They just seem to ship whatever they have in stock. You might be lucky or not
Just buy from Amazon if you can. I have bought a Samsung 16GB class 10 for my Desire Z for 20€, and the increase in speed while loading the gallery is noticeable.

could you post the code of the sd?
The code is MB-MPAGAEU
On Amazon.it is right now in offer at 17.40€. That's insanely cheap, IMHO.
