[Q] Both root guides in the sticky say they're outdated. Where is the CURRENT guide?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I thought the root guides would be in the sticky. if both guides are out of date, which one am I supposed to use??
Thanks!
You can still use the hack kit

Just the videos are out dated, but you can still go along with them,. Use bubbys method, should be easier, the video is out of date but you can use it to go along with, if instructions in the video are different than the instructions in the command promt then just do what the command promt says, their not that different. just watch the video a few times before you do it. and dont get in a rush.
Neither ways say they are outdated. The videos might. The dates on the post just mean that was the last time they were updated. If they aren't updated that means that they haven't found any better way of doing it.

This. I did this yesterday, watched the video, ran the program while watching the video with it and I got root, s-off, and everything just fine, all the instructions were the same as the video. Running CM7 Stable now and after some modifications I couldn't be happier. Good luck with your rooting, just follow the instructions exactly and you'll be fine.
Thanks guys! This is the gf's phone and she wants wifi tether so she can use my iPad to watch Desperate Housewives while she's traveling, lol.
She loves Sense and the stock ROM but wants to ditch the bloat. I'm thinking one of the new gingerbread sense roms would do nicely.
How long did this take you guys?

maybe 20 mins?; after I watched the video 3 or 4 times. loading the roms takes the most time. you dont have to root to get free tether, there is a guide in the dev section somewhere.

It took me a bit longer then I expected cause i had some minor problems. But the general time is round 30 min. Took me about an hour.
It too me about 45 minutes total to do everything. But just FYI, if you only want to root for tethering you can get tethering for free on unrooted stock by setting your own VPN settings, search the forums and you'll be able to find a guide easily.

Which wireless tethering app do you use?

Hey guys,
Now that Verizon's Mobile Hotspot promotion is done, what are you using to tether with your rooted Droid Charge? I am trying to use Barnacle but it keeps giving me errors.
Thanks!
Simple, Pay for the native app.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA Premium App
I currently don't tether, I was planning on using this; https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether&feature=search_result
but whenever I search for it on my Charge I can't seem to find it on the market place, and clicking the direct link just gives me an error. Hope someone has found a good wireless tether, going away for the weekend and could really use one!

+1for OpenGarden. I have been using it on my Thunderbolt for a weeks now and haven't seen any issues.
I loaded Barnacle and rooted my phone last night, so far so good. But I am going to also try Open Garden to see it it meets my need (see my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158476 )
so just to clarify guys, if use this tethering program, it can help me save a few bucks comparedd to paing for verizon's optional tethering service? ;-)
I've tried both the tethering programs in this thread and neither are detected on my PSP/NDS, the app also doesn't ask or tell me the SSID or passphrase, anyone know a REAL wireless tethering app where you can make it act pretty much like a router..?

I've used barnacle for almosta year on my D1 and it worked great. I even changed the ssid to virus hahaha lol never had anyone they to connect either lol. I am going to try to root this charge this weekend when I get home as I'm a trucker. So mad they stopped the free hotspot.
I use wireless tether for root 3.1 beta 1. For device profile I use Samsung fascinate for infrastructure mode.

I have never found one, PSP/NDS probably have the same issue with connecting to Ad Hoc networks. I had to root tablet and edit a file to make it work with A500.
Open Garden seems to have a better pass through for speed, used Wireless Tether for quite some time with no issues.
I pay enough to Vz since I never go over 5G a month even with tethering I don't feel bad at all.

Motorola Triumph Rooted with GingerBreak 1.2

The Triumph has been rooted.
See it here
Get GingerBreak 1.2 HERE
Then get superuser......That was fast.....
question refering to working apps once rooted for triumph
Were you able to get the Wireless Tether app working once you rooted the Triumph? I have heard that some people have had this problem. Possibly since the bootloader is locked keeping you from mess with the kernel.

Rooting only allows you to run wifi-tether. There are other factors that are still to be resolved.
I have not rooted mine yet. When I get a developer environment going then I will.

Yeah, I was wondering about that as at one point I must've found one labelled gingerbreak wrapper apk 1.5 while the original thread here still says 1.2.
Checked the original website(wrapper apk) and also the original source tarball which was still 4/21/11... I'd be leery of the v1.5 labelled one as I can't find anything about where it came from now... 1.2 works, so I'd say safest to stay with that.
Also, look at the size of the 1.5 v. apk... significantly larger than 1.2....
The link in the OP is for some app called Gingerbread which just gives you a couple wallpapers. For that reason I kinda thought it was just a tasteless prank (I kinda still do think that). The Youtube video actually says it's gingerbreak 1.2. So I'm not really sure where the OP is getting his info. I had to google to find the actual gingerbreak app.
Gingerbreak is actually made by a mod/dev here on xda. his thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
1.2 is the newest version

I had presumed that we already knew that here, but since like the OP I had stumbled across a gingerbreak APK claiming to be v1.5, but never used it, and I had occasion to revisit looking at the app. Which led to my re-visiting the gingerbreak APK blog posting to verify 1.2 and also visiting the original exploit posting and downloading the tarball which hadn't been touched since 4/21.
Has anyone tried de-compiling and/or otherwise examining the version claiming to be v1.5?
Worked just fine for me with no issues. Thanks!

Wifi tether works fine with Barnacle if you chance MTU size on client machine. I.E. my laptop works with it just fine, but my Nook Color won't.
Thanks, this worked great. I wasn't going to root until there was a ROM to load but I was getting annoyed by those constantly lit buttons. Run gingerbreak, get the keyboard backlight app from the market and problem solved in about 10 minutes!

Yes it does work. You have to wait a long time. Just be patient. Go away from it. A watched android phone doesn't root. Go make diner or something so you don't have to wait for it.
mine rooted within a couple of seconds no wait no nothing hit root got a spin dial then poof restart. and i was rooted. "and there was much rejoicing" *mono toned* yay.

Question about hotspot

I am currently using the shift-deck rom based on CM7. Is there away to see who is connected to you if you are using the hotspot? If not I think I will switch to wireless tether from the market but just thought maybe I was missing something. I use it mostly for when I am on my 3DS at work. Since I work at a public hospital I would like to see if someone connects. I suppose I could set up security but I like the ease and speed at which I can connect my devices quickly to an unsecure hotspot if I need.
Thanks
Why not set up security? Could have been done in the time it took to post this. Plus once you connect your devices and put in the code, it will remember it each time that it connects.
using hotspot
I'm not too well informed.
My phone is rooted.
I"ve read you can use it as a hotspot,
Was working and a guy wanted to connect to the net
so i turned on hotspot. Got an extra charge message.
Whats the proper way to allow others to connect?
Sorry about stealing the thread.

If your using the Stock ROM then you can use an app like "wireless tether" from the market. Some Sense ROMs have a built in hotspot hack that will allow you to use Sprints hotspot without charge. Wireless tethering is also built into most AOSP ROMs.
That wasn't his question though.
To answer your question, I think when I used to use the app, it would pop up telling me who wants to connect and I would have to give them permission.
Now I'm on decks rom and it doesn't do that. I just set up the security.

I've been using wired tether for root users since I've been on gb. You have to have the usb drivers from the fascinate on your computer for it to work in windows. With linux it should work without any extra configuring.
And its free
