Hey.
I am buying a Milestone and it has 500MB data per month. During the day if I am out I will check my Twitter and email. Sometimes I go on the net and sometimes check my facebook. Will 500MB per month be enough for this?
Thanks.

I use my phone much more than you on the internet, and have never used over 100MB/month... I used 70MB once, but then i was using my phone for streaming video

How on earth have you used so little? 3g only? Syncing email alone should have you above 100MiB... unless you are only using the phone on wifi...
is there a way to find out without signing in to a verizon.com account?

I use wifi at my house and when available. I guess the main reason I don't use much data is because I study, play video games, and watch a few tv shows/movies. With that much going on, I don't have any time to use massive amounts of data.
Honestly, I don't know how anyone uses 20+GiB. There just isn't enough time in the day unless you're taking time out of other things. Maybe tethering I could see... but if you're just using the phone?

How on earth, short of using wifi tether as your only internet service, do you use 30 gigs of data a month. I've seen a spike in my usage to just above 5 gigs for 2 weeks+ with the TB and < 2 weeks with the D2. But I have never come close to 10 gigs even during the holidays when I tether a crap ton, because most of the people I visit don't have wifi. I'm sorry, but it is people like you that are getting us all forced onto tiered plans eventually. And I consider myself a "power" user. I stream a lot of music, and use my phone a ton for nav. I just do see how you can use this much data.

I'm just trying to get into the habit of using the binary prefix rather than the colloquially accepted standard SI prefix.

Tether > xbox, netflix, hulu, etc. When this is faster than my DSL, why not enjoy it? Free tethering won't last forever. Plus ATT put their DSL into tiered plans as well.
550MB between my wife and I combined, having the TBolts since release day. We're on WiFi at home or it would be higher (up to double that). I would call us well over average volume users in regards to social apps and chat programs since it's our work.

Yeah I hear ya. I'm reminded every time I look over my taxes or see someone buying soda and Ding Dongs with food stamps while talking on their iPhone. Hard to complain though because every group has a poster child to make you look evil for being against them lol.
I've searched the forum before posting this and couldn't find a similar thread, so here's my question (2 actually):
1)How big should a 3G data plan be, for the Nexus S?
2)Also, is there a way to allow only a few apps to connect to the internet through 3G, while the rest use only wifi?
I want to use it for checking mail on 2 accounts, send/receive about 40-50 messages daily (through whatsapp), a little navigation on Google Maps, 2-3 clips on youtube and checking a couple of webpages each day. In my country, unlimited data plans are a rarity and the most common are 50mb, 250mb and 500mb.Thanks!
I'm in the US and use my phone for just about everything all day so I eat up about 100 MB a day. I use wifi anywhere I don't get 4g coverage as well. I would say to be safe go with the 500 unless it is a major price difference. If you have access to wifi regularly and keep track of data usage a plan with even 250 MB should be OK. Hope this helps a little.

Agree, but it depends on your usage, for me 250mb is enought, but some months i push the limit (what costs 6 cents for 1mb, not a big deal).
I'd recommend if can to get the 500 or if possible 1gb.
I'm using my phone for about the same plus surfing the net and my monthly usage is about 600 - 700mb.
Try the app Call meter 3g so you can keep track of your usage. It doesn't count wi-fi traffic.
Good luck

Well, after some intensive reading over the internet, I think that I could settle for 500mb. In the android market, there's an app called Droid Wall (needs root) and that should make sure the only apps connecting to the internet through 3G are those I want. Thanks for your help!
Now reading about rooting the NS
EDIT: also, I've found something called 3G Watch Dog, so it's easier to keep an eye out on the data traffic over 3G.

even if you don't use a firewall (like droid wall) stand-by usage is not that big, the problem is YOUR usage, you can easly take a month with 20mb if you only let it to stand-by, but if you watch 3 youtube videos, 20mb is gone!" =o)

Well I think 5gigs is far.. I mean FAR from what I'm capable of over 3G. Whenever there's a wifi hotspot available, I prefer connecting to the internet through it. The 3G connection is just for those areas in which there's no wifi in sight.
500Mb is sort of like the minimum where I am. The quota usually comes in 500Mb, 1G, 1.5G, 3G, 5G...
For me, I will stay under 500Mb if I don't use services like Google Maps or Waze, if I do, I will be around 700-800Mb a month.
I am thinking of getting a smartphone with a pay as you go plan, and the options I have are 20Mb for a day (2$), or 125Mb for a week (7$).
I would rarely use it (except if I'm on the bus or something) as I have Wifi basically everywhere on campus.
I am just not sure how much this really is. In the time I have been checking XDA, I could have gone over the 20mb limit, or I could be under, I'm not sure.
I believe youtube videos will eat that up in only a few minutes. (It really isn't worth watching half a video and having to pay 2$ for it!)
Thanks,
~404
20mb isn't much at all.. I blow thru that checking my email and this website on a daily basis. God forbid I fire up torrents on this thing for a song or an album.
Best bet is to get the bigger one for now, use it a few days and see where you're at, then adjust accordingly..
20 MB isn't much at all. If you, let's say want to read some news (on a non mobile site) expect to go over 20 MB very very quickly.

I think 20MB(MByte) is enough,but 20Mb(Mbit) is not.
I have 1GB plan per month, and i use only 300-600MB.
One day i can use 100MB and other 5MB.

I have a 2GB data plan. With the HOX only having 16 gb storage I'm guessing I'll be streaming a lot more audio via either pandora or spotify. If I were to stream say 1 hour of audio a day, every day along with the other stuff we normally use our data plans for, will I go over? Should I just bump up to 3 GB?

I stream at work using Pandora probably 2.5 hrs a day, 5 days a week. I use around 1.5 GB of data a month. I'm on wifi when home. I would honestly recommend you bump it up to 3GB just be on the safe side.
Thank you, that's helpful.
Otherwise, plan your downloads/streaming for when you have WiFi ;-)

So I have had the One X since the day after it was released. I have Unlimited ATT Data and today, what 18 or so days after I bought it I hit 2 GB of data. The reason is I am using Google Music to stream, I use it everyday for about an hour on my jog. Sure I do a little surfing and searching, but really so far nothing else.
So I'd say about 3 gb of data a month will be my usage because of the low amount of storage I have to use Google Music.
Mazel tov!
That's not a lot. I was using more than 200mb every day but I had to switch to WiFi since I'm on the 2gb plan.

I hit 4 GB after two weeks. Tethering plus my email app went haywire and started burning up data for some reason.
Cool Story Hansel.
I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but you can have Play(Google) Music cache music locally so you don't have to burn up data (and battery life) streaming it. Might not be a big deal in this particular situation, but just FYI.
I think it is odd that pandora uses less data then google music does.

I do have Google Music set to cache, but that is only for buffering. I think what you mean is to download music and play the songs offline. I have around 800 songs thats about 4 gb of data. I added all the songs and the end result was I only had 2.9 gb of total storage left on the phone.
This is almost a deal breaker for me, I've had the One X for a few weeks and in fact I had the International version before which of course has 32 gb of storage, which IMO is just the right amount. The ATT version is to low and no expandable sd cards make it worse.
I have pre ordered a Galaxy S 3 and will mess with them both to see which one works best for me. I also have my iPhone 4S to fall back on, but the screen size makes it almost not doable anymore.
Netflix is the bane of my data plan. I'm sure AT&T hates me by now.
I noticed the same thing. I dont pull down nearly as much data streaming 128k streams from tunein as I do from google music (not set to high quality).

AT&T unlimited data plan users have up to 5gb in a month before their data speed would be reduced. At 3gb per month, you should be fine.
I have used 3.1 gb in 22 days.
does anyone know the transfer bitrate of the music from google music, both on the high quality and lower quality streams? i stream almost exclusively over wi-fi at my office, so i haven't really followed my GM data usage too closely.
How do people survive with such little data..?

Google's support documents state upto 320kbps. So that'd be high quality, normal would probably be 192kpbs.

Thanks, I thought I had seen 320kbps at some point, but i missed it on a quick search. I half expected a www.lmgtfy.com response to my question. Normal quality was really what i was wondering...sounded like at least 192kbps, since 128 probably would push out such his data rates. Speaking of which, how the hell are you going through so much data?! that's impressive, i must say.
I hit 3 GB within the first week, and 4GB a week later. Mostly tethering and app experimentation (one went haywire and burned through a ton of data).
I got throttled a few days after that, but AT&T seems to have lifted the throttling today. Not sure why but not complaining.
AT&T throttles back speeds of those who still have unlimited plans...I upgraded data w the vivid but wonder how much they reduce speeds by..I stream music through Rhapsody at 192 kbps and my data hits at least 3 gb per month..usually 4 but it's only another ten bucks...just hate that there is no true unlimited plan left..well I guess sprint does but their coverage is horrible..

Does anyone have an issue where their One x eats data by an insane amount in a short period? When I first got my One X I went thru 1GB of data in like 2 days. I tethered for like an hour and the rest was just basic usage from my X itself. I've done a master reset since then and loaded a few my apps and usage seemed to have slowed but it still seems to use data more than normal. I noticed "Android OS" was using a lot of data. A lot of it was when I watched YouTube clips. Has anyone had this issue?
Edit: So I turned off wifi for a moment to browse on just the mobile network. The few pages I clicked on and scrolled thru for the past 5 or 6 minutes resulted in 4mb of data used with just the browser. Does that seem normal to anyone?

You "upgraded" to tiered data? That's far from an upgrade.. The unlt'd plans you get atleast 5GB(for lte owners) unthrottled, usually more, with a few hours/days unthrottled after. Even throttled you can do 500kbps.

I do have auto sync turned on. But I turned off auto backup (just now, I have tried turning off auto backup beforei wiped but it didn't change anything ). The weird thing is its not like usage happens out of no where its when I actually access data apps like the browser or FB. I can literally see my data usage go up from the last time I checked it a few minutes ago on the usage meter.
