2G/3G Toggle?

Any idea how to enable/unhide this feature under wireless networks? Switching to 2G only nearly doubles my battery life on my Nexus
I've just been accessing the band selection menu and selecting gsm bands only. The menu is *#*#2263#*#*. This little "fix" doesn't hold after a reboot, fyi.
I also use the SMODA widget to shut off the data connection whenever I don't need it.
It sucks that mobile data is always on by default, with no stock option to shut it off, and that you can't select to only use 2g right out of the box.
I've seen some widgets that will turn 3G off/on... I wonder if those work on the captivate. I'll give it a try today.

I think you should be able to force it by going to *#*#4636*#*# and selecting GSM only, but that's such a hassle

See if this helps do what you want.
Try quick settings from the market and toggle the APN control on and off. Appears to work....

I'm not looking to completely disable data - I just want to be able to disable 3G when I don't need it (and revert to EDGE data)

The widget I have - which comes with Weather and Toggle Widget - does not work. It just brings up the wireless connections menu, but of course you can't turn it off from there.
I'm using smart bar, and it has a 3g-2g switch, but it isn't working. Since this functionality isn't working on my captivate, but worked on my other phones, I'd say it's been intentionally pushed out. If a hack can fix this, I'd love to learn about it.

I am also interested in this. I work in.a area that switches from edge to 3g a lot and when i had a iphone i increased my battery a lot by setting it strictly to edge at work.

After all the digging and searching around, I found two apps that work perfectly on Samsung Captivate for toggling mobile data (3G)
- Juicedefender (it has a widget you can use to toggle 3G quickly)
- SMODA Widget (It doesnt have too many 5 star ratings but works fine on my samsung captivate).
My phone is rooted but I believe it is not a requirement of either of the above apps. Hope this info is useful for other captivate owners.
Most of the other APN / 3G toggle apps on the market try to put a suffix on the APN names in settings. On the samsung captivate this works only with a restart/reboot. Meaning if you disable 3G using the app it would put a suffix like 'disabled' or something to the APN name. But your phone still has the 3G connection using the original APN settings. Only after you restart the phone does it see the 'disabled' APN name and is not able to use and hence no 3G. Vice versa when you want to enable 3G back - needs restart.
I dont know what process the above 2 apps use but they work instantly on my samsung captivate. No need to restart or click a bunch of other settings. They work perfectly and as simple as it should be.

i heard juice defender works well
Where are you seeing the option to switch from 3G to EDGE? I just installed Juice defender but can't find the option. The mobile data connection widget just shuts off my data entirely.
Sorta on topic but when I try to install juice defender it is never able to install the aosp helper. Does it work for you guys?

Yea, I was hoping someone maybe knew which file you had to edit to reenable that option in the network settings page

It says install completed, but in the logs, it says there was an error
It would be nice to disable 3g while at home or something , where the reception is a bit sketchy, but i could at least still use it for voice and texting , and use wifi for the internet and app stuff. Could help conserve battery life as well
I tried smoda and can confirm that it doesn't work for me. It disabled data completely as I cannot access the web.when I activated the widget. It would be nice if we could set this phone to 2g and if data speeds were above a certain threshold for a certain amount of time then we could have it switch to 3g.

Yeah, I'd really just like to force the phone into EDGE mode when I'm not using it - updating weather and fetching e-mails are really not that data intensive and don't need the speed from the 3G connection. I'd like to have a widget that will turn the 3G back on when I'm on breaks or whatever and want to surf the web, watch a video on YouTube, whatever. I believe you can do this in the service menus, so you would think there would be a way to accomplish it with a widget - even if it were Galaxy S specific.
I'd pitch in 5 bucks towards a bounty towards such a widget if somebody could create one.
Juice defender does have the option to run the 3G radio on 15/1 cycles (off for 15 minutes, on for one) but I'm not sure how/if my apps that would use background data would sync up with that.
i9000 vs 1897 band settings?
Now that I've moved to the JH2 firmware I'm back to some of the AT&T crap, like hiding the band selection setting.
I'm thinking that the differences are in the Settings.apk.
Others have said that since it's a system app and signed, you can't just install it. So I'm wondering if it would be possible to pull the Settings.apk from the i9000 rom and stuff it using the update.zip method.
May have to do a backup and give it a shot.
Once that setting is available, you can use 2G 3G switcher from Market to bring up the UI and toggle between EDGE and HSDPA.
By keeping it on EDGE, my battery lasts alot longer...
If we could manage to enable it juice defender would switch back and forth automatically based on download speed and/or the screen being on/off, which be ideal.

Change 3G to 2G automatically when screen off?

Hi!
I can't find a single widget/app that is able to change between 2G and 3G with one click, you're always taken to the menu only. Doesn't android allow this function?
I would especially like a function to change to 2G automatically when screen is off. Can anybody explain to me why this isn't possible or if there actually is a program?
Cheers

Juicedefender can disable data connection when screen goes off.
It is not the same as switching from 3G to 2G.
... Anyway I am using Juicedefender to avoid several syncs when the screen is off.
Well yes i used juicedefender, but that's not what i'm looking for. Right now i use data on demand, which does its job flawlessly. But i still have the feeling that my phone eats more battery on standby when i've got 3g enabled. Maybe it's just placebo, who knows?
I just don't understand why it isn't possible to switch between 2g and 3g in the same way you can turn BT and wi-fi on and off.
But anyway, thanks for your advice guys!

[Q] HTC HD2 - how to Stop 3g

Hi all, please help.
I've got a HTC HD2 that wont stop connecting to 3g. I've tried setting it to 'my work network, but it still keeps connecting. Also tried new modem connection to 'offline', it says that already exists, but I can't select it.
It doesn't cost much, but each time it's a few 'p', once added up it can amount to £1 a day easily.
Is there another way to stop it?
Any thoughts?
Hi there,
I assume your still using winmo 6.5 by the sounds of it
Two simple ways i would recommend, download a free app found in XDA (advanced config (v3.3 i think)) as there is a setting to turn off data there.
or
More simply, go into your apn settings and remove/change the apn name; so for mine i would change "internet" and just remove the t of it.
Can use data if the settings are wrong so it never connects
Cheers.
Yes, am using wm 6.5. Thanks for the quick reply.
Where are the 'apn' settings?
I'm not very savvy when it comes to changing things.

[WIDGET] 2.2+ Connection mode toggle widget (data and wifi)

I would like to use this thread to open the discussion and answer comments on this widget that permits to toggle between 4 different combinations of data and WiFi connection modes:
1. 3G enabled
2. WiFi enabled
3. 3G & WiFi enabled
4. 3G & WiFi disabled
In the settings page is possible to disable the options that are not needed.
I wrote this application for my personal need, as when I geto home I use only WiFi and sometimes I loose wifi signal, so my SGS2 switches to 3G connection, consuming more battery.
The application uses a trick to toggle data connection, to simplifiy the concept I could say that it invokes an hidden function of the Android system. This trick is not always supported on the multitude of Android devices, so it's possible that you get an error when you try it or simply that it does not work.
Nevertheless I decided to share it because it's supported in several cases, that in Android world could mean millions of devices.
Here is the link:

Great App, But...
Ivano,
I think this APP is great but it could be even better with just a small change.
Is it possible to change the 3G mode when the phone connects to WIFI.
In otherwords, disable 3G when WIFI is connected?
Thanks

Not sure I'm getting it.
If you mean having exclusively wifi enabled or 3g enabled, that's the reason why I created it, you vave to mark two flags in the options screen: £G and WiFi.
If you mean that 3G connection should be authomatically disabled when connected in WiFi, this is the normal behaviour of Android.

Thanks Ivan.
I would like 3G to automatically disable when WIFI is connected. I am a novice on these matters, but I believe "network data" is disabled when connected to WIFI. However the phone still connects to the 3G network for phone calls.
Unfortunately 3G reception is quite poor at my house and I would prefer my phone to connect to 2G when also connected to my WIFI (ie when I am at home).
Otherwise, if your APP could be modified to enable a connection mode based on GPS location or signal strength it would work well.
Anyway thanks for taking an interest.
Cheers

Ok, now is clear. A lot of people asked me the same because when in 2G mode the phone saves a lot of battery. I have even tryed to do it, but as far as I know is not possible, anyway too difficult for me.
I'm not sure if there are cooked ROMs with this functionality embedded.

Cannot disable 3G and Wi-Fi
Hi, Ivano.
Congratulations for your idea. It's what I was looking for.
I'm on Motorola Defy and I noticed 3 issues.
First. Every time I click on the widget it opens the app.
Second. I marked 3 boxes on app ( 3G enable, Wi-fi enable and both disable ). When I'm switching between modes it only appears wi-fi enable and offline but even when offline shows it connects on 3G. I can't turn both 3G and Wi-fi off.
Third. This is not that important but I would like to see a more neutral icon (black, gray, white). And I think you could take off that "/" from the icon. It'll look better.
Can you solve it?
Thanks.

I've already been noticed about this issue but I was not been able to reproduce it. The biggest difficulty is that I can't test the widget with the emulator, I don't have many other devices.

Even in this case I should have the device to test; the problem with Android is that there are too many different customizations.

For the Icons I would have no problem to change and include different ones; the fact is that I'm a programmer, not a graphic designer; the icons that I have where produced for free by some other users.
If you, or someone else, are able to create better icons I would add them to the app; only keep in mind that I have three widgets, for a total of 12/15 icons.

How does "3G & WiFi enabled" behave? At work I use our guest WIFI which blocks certain servers/ports, for example Viber will not work. If I use this option, would it allow me to use the WIFI connection by default and only use 3G/4G by these apps that are blocked via WIFI?

Yes, they will be blocked. It works exactly when you enable wifi without disabling 3g/4g connection, they are used exclusively.
Hello Ivanot,
I'am a true fan of your widget. It's clever, looks rather nice; it could have replaced my other 3G on-off widget and my current wifi widget, as it does both their jobs...
What I miss is your widget displaying the name of the wifi provider it has connected to (it's a matter of habit, I just like to know I'm not on some stranger's network.)
I discovered that not a lot of the wifi on-off widgets available do that.
I've used one from ZDTools that was doing a perfectly good job until a few days ago, when it started to signal that it had unexpectedly stopped, even though wifi was still on and the widget displaying things correctly.
I don't like things that behave weird and uninstalled it.
So I went on a search for something to replace it and came across your creation.
If adding this feature is possible at all AND you have the time to do it, I'd love to learn about it!
Again, congratulations on a really nice job (I might just keep that smart little thing anyway )
(By the way I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S3 with Jelly Bean and everything is working fine !)

Hi fedtho,
thanks for your appreciation.
Actually I'm quite busy in this period, so I will not implement this feature now, but I think it can be useful, if I understood well how it works:
- when switching to wifi you can narrow the possible networks to connect to
- when connected it displays somewhere the actual network name

[Q] Carbon Rom on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 p7500Signal or Mobile Data Toggle

@kasper_h Hi, I installed your carbon rom on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 p7500. It works better than what I had before (CM) as there's less lag and some nice features but I can't seem to find a toggle for signal or data to turn on and off mobile data. Could you help me? Thanks very much! Currently all I can find is a 2G toggle to turn 2G off (which seems to default to 3G) or to force 2G on. I want to be able to turn off mobile data completely for when I'm at home or overseas and use wifi.

HY,there are several ways. Some roms offer you the option by long pressing the power button which gaves you a menu including mobile data toggle. If this doesnt work for your rom go to settings ,more and APN which means acess points names and select the option that suits your data plan. The easier way is to go to play store and download a app like beautifull widgets that will help you toggle on mobile data(to make sure this works you need to make sure that apn is set as it should,if you are not sure just call your provider and ask them)PLEASE PRESS THANKS IF I HELPED!!!!

I'm gonna thank you anyway. Some good ideas but Carbon power menu doesn't seem to have the option. I didn't want to have to install another widget or app just for this so I'll see if I can wait, maybe they'll fix it in an update. I know other carbon users I talked to at the irc channel said they have a "signal" toggle to add on to control data but I've looked so many times and it isn't one of the toggles I have on my tab. Apparently tab 10.1 is an unofficial device! crying:

@kasper_h Hi sorry a little bump. I just flashed your 1 July version for carbon rom for my Tab 10.1 (p4) and I did notice my auto-rotate which seemed to be broken on 18 June version is now working. Great work and thanks! Still cannot find a signal or mobile data toggle. Am I just not looking in the right place? I haven't tested the GPS to see if it's more reliable yet. On the older Carbon Rom, GPS worked but dropped signal a few times suddenly while I was driving (my i9305 was able to maintain GPS tho).
