Upgrade to Radio 6.35.10.18 ONLY - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Hi,
My phone is running in radio 3.22.20.17, SPL 1.33.2010 but S-ON which prevent me from using the fastboot flash command as explained by cursordroids in the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=605239
I'm thinking of using another procedure by using Amon RA recovery image and flashing signed update.zip for the radio and for the SPL.
The problem with this procedure is that my phone reboots in between the two updates (the radio update and the spl update) so at one point, i've got a phone running Radio version 6.35.xxx and the old SPL 1.33.2010.
I've no idea how the phone will react. Am i going to birck it ? Does anybody already tried this ?
Thanks for your feedbacks.

Seriously? Did you even read his instructions?
----- If you do not have an Engineering SPL, download 1.33.2010 and flash through recovery before starting this procedure. Flash the SPL update.zip like any other update.zip file.
Straight from his post.
How much more simple does a dev have to make it in order for members like you to do this.

Seriously, did you even read what he wrote?
He has an engineering SPL already but his phobe is still showing S-ON.
Now, what i would do if i were him is the following.
Test if the command fastboot boot recovery.img works.
If it does then i would flash the radio through the recovery, afterwards i would boot the HERO recovery and use it to flash the new spl.
Bare in mind that i did not test this method and nor do i plan to test it.

Hi,
Thanks eygor that have pointed correctly my situation.
So YES i can fastboot (i need to add some flags as my magic disable the sdcard by default) and this what i'm going to use.... flashing via a signed zip file BUT i do not know how the phone will react by having a radio 6.35.10.18 dissociated from the SPL (still in version 1.33.2010....yes the engineering version).
Anybody has had any experience with this. ?
Question:
- My rom is rooted, am i able to use flash_image to update the SPL and the radio ?
- Receovry_Ra does not provide the flash_image command or am i wrong ?

LOL Please show where he says that it's an engineeringSPL.
Anyways, if you got fastboot working why not work from there? If you're asking what I think youre asking cause I'm not sure... you just flash radio in fastboot and then flash SPL (doesnt matter if you still have the old spl , just flash the new one after radio) then flash recovery

1.33.2010
Sounds like an engineering SPL.
If you have a 32A device, use the 3.04.401.2 Europe RUU with a goldcard. Then use the SU within that ROM to install hero recovery. Finally use hero recovery to flash the rest of the stuff you need.

Hi xaueious,
I've read the article explaining the use of 3.04.401.2 Europe RUU with a goldcard.
They clearly mention to copy rom1.zip into the Goldcard and rename it SAPPIMG.zip
(see post from JcMatos http://forum.xda-developers.com/printthread.php?t=625108&pp=10&page=7)
My problem is that rom1.zip does not contain any upgrade of the radio or the SPL (it's contained in the rom.zip). So if i follow correctly the instruction, i get my magic updated with a new rom but still with my old SPL and Radio remains identical. I do have a high risk of having my magic bricked.
Am i missing something ?

[Testing] Flash 1.76.2007 Engineering SPL over 1.76.0007 Perfected SPL

Something to try if you're stuck with 1.76.0007 SPL... There is no harm in trying. If it works, great! If not, then you're no worse off...
Make sure your radio version is 6.35.07.29 by entering FASTBOOT mode. (Back + Power). If it's not 6.35.07.29, don't continue.
Download this update and save to your SD as update.zip
http://content.modaco.net/hero/update-hero-hboot-1.76.2007-signed.zip
Boot your phone into HTC recovery mode using Home and Power.
Press Home and End to bring up the recovery console.
Choose the option to "Apply sdcard:update.zip"
If this is successful, it will apply the update then bring you back into the recovery mode. Turn off your phone, then boot into FASTBOOT using Back and Power. See if your HBOOT version is now 1.76.2007.
We might be on to something here...
This seems to be what's happening when people try this...
Code:
E:No signature (5 files)
E:Verification failed

That means that the Engineering SPL can't be flashed over the stock SPL.
Oh well, it was worth a shot.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
Dude nice one but what's the success rate? I'm willing to try this **** but i need more input from you, like has anyone successfully flashed it and in case it bricks my phone and it prolly will, can i overwrite it with an official Sense TW/HK/SG RUU and will it bring my Magic back from the dead?
EDIT: Got ya. Looks like it is still work in progress...
Guru, what's about thing to replace HBoot to Eng HBoot in rom.zip while RUU wait to get processed ?
It's so crazy, but ... why not?
I'm gonna compare by Hex-editor original Hero Hboot, Eng hero Hboot and original magic Hboot...

Bad news:

As there is one new eng Hboot for Hero, so a new one HBoot for Magic exists... but where?)

Nice anyway , if some one wants to have the new radio and be able to flash the new sense using fastboot maybe it should work to flash hboot with HBoot from RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.61_WWE_test_signed_NoDri ver and then flash the new radio and go on with flashing the rest...
The NEW ENG.SPL is not useful unless we get it in form of a signed sappimg.zip , here comes the big question Do Modaco has the new hero SPL in a signed by htc sappimg.zip ? if he has it then we are all set

Rom.zip is signed, when you change it the sign validation will fail.

The whole point to running a 1.76 ENG HBOOT is to be able to run Hero ROMs and the new Sapphire 32A Sense ROMs without modifying them to the current 1.33 HBOOT partition table. And I'm quite sure that the 6.35 radio doesn't run well with a 1.33 HBOOT.
The HBOOT defines the partitioning of the NAND and the new Sense ROMs can't be flashed onto the partition table defined by a 1.33 HBOOT.

I don't think we'll be able to directly flash this SPL over top of the 1.76.0007 perfected SPL.
We need to find a way to get a rooted recovery image on this phone. Through the same means that the Android Recovery Flasher or the Relentless Rooter would flash the recovery image.
Unfortunately, at this point there is no way of getting root priveledges on these ROMs.

Tks for ur work first.
Try to flash the eng. 2007spl directly over 0007, official signature is the point, but almost unbreakable?
I tried to flash 2.53RUU (with eng. 2010spl), surely, it said the main version older and aborted. So can we just modify version info in the official RUU to cheat version check? Maybe...

Upgrading ROM to Hero

Hello.
I just got my Magic a few days ago, and i am considering trying to get the Hero ROM onto it heavily. However, as i just got it recently and it's not really a cheap phone, i really don't want to brick it.
So, how great is the chance it'll brick? Is there any way i can make the chance smaller (thinking different ROMs etc?), what is SPL and Radio?
This is the intel i managed to get from it:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32a SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.33.0014 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-3.22.23.18

Talking SPL, what is it? What is a perfect and a hard SPL? And how do i know what i currently have?
hold back while powering on your device at the top it will say HBOOT bla bla bla it will also say 32b/32a this is the key element, flashing a 32a onto 32b and vice versa could brick your device. Dont use the TW sense rom as that seems to brick devices
only download hboot from sapphire forums

As i wrote in the original post, it's a 32a device. Do you have any links to a relevant guide for me? One which is really in-depth would be really great, as i am new to the android universe. Thank you
The MyHero ROM seems attractive to me, would anything hold me back from using that?
And by the way - if i change my mind after getting the Hero ROM on my device, is there any way to get the original ROM back onto it?

Amon ra's recovery, This can save you! you will need to follow his tutorial and you will need one of his HBOOT's which he also has a tutorial.
once the hboot is done boot into recovery (home+power) perform a backup with nandroid and there is your failsafe,Once you have backed up choose your 32A rom taking note of what the Developer reccomends most of them link you to what you need.
Please read through their thread to make sure you know what to do.Anything your unsure of use the search button! Good luck

Thank you. I just got a last question, in what part of getting it from original to hero is the risk of bricking it?
Mainly the spl i think or the chance of flashing the wrong radio (i did wrong radio on 2 phones!) providing you read all the info correct from amon ra and other devs you should be ok.
If yours really is 32A i think youd be better to look for a sense ui rom BASED on the TW official rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552274 is one) but im not sure and take no responsibility.
By the way this should have been in general and not development forum

You only really need to be careful flashing the HBOOT/SPL
Go through all of the steps in section 2 of this guide:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking#sec02
Download Flashrec
[urlhttp://zenthought.org/system/files/asset/2/flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.apk[/url]
Enable USB debugging on your phone
Settings, Applications, Development, USB Debugging
Install Flashrec
adb install flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.apk
Download Amon_Ra Recovery
http://www.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.1H.img
Save it to your SD card as recovery.img
Run Recovery Flasher on your phone
Backup recovery
Type in the path to your new recovery:
/sdcard/recovery.img
Flash new recovery
Now you can flash custom ROMs.
At this point, you can also flash a new SPL onto your phone.
For 32A, I suggest the 1.33.2010 SPL
Make sure to read all directions very carefully. If you are not 100% confident in your abilities, you might want to get some further assistance.
If Flashrec won't run, you need to downgrade your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218
Downgrading will definitely void your warranty with no easy way to restore your original splash screen, it's pretty obvious to your wireless carrier that you've modified your phone.

Flashing a 32B radio onto a 32A Magic will cause some trouble, but shouldn't brick the phone. The problem is that after flashing the 32B radio, you might have forgotten to flash a 32B recovery environment. If that's the case, then fastboot flash the 32B recovery.
It worked for me a few times when I was switching between 32B and 32A radios to try out different ROMs.
I did, however, brick a 32A Magic when I was flashing a new SPL. Not sure how it happened, glad I had warranty.
I was very into the PSP back in the days where it came out, using homebrew and so on. Yet i am never confident when facing something i haven't been messing around with before.
Do you have any idea where i can get some extraordinary help so i can be sure i am doing it right?

I can help, and I'm sure there are more helpful people around here.
You have what's called a 'Perfected' SPL. Certain version of the Magic SPL (HBOOT) don't allow direct flashing of the recovery.img needed to run new ROMs.
Normally, you can boot into FASTBOOT (Back+Power) and then type:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
But with a 'Perfected' SPL, you get the message:
Code:
remote:not allow
It used to be easy to root these phones, but HTC is getting smarter with their protection.

Flashrec (Recovery Flasher Walkthrough)

Essentially you need to:
- Flash the Amon_RA Recovery using the Recovery Flasher
- Boot into Recovery Mode (Home+Power) and flash the new SPL.
- Download your favorite ROM (MyHero is recommended for new users)
- Flash the new ROM using Amon_RA Recovery (Home+Power)
If Flashrec doesn't allow you to backup your existing recovery and flash a new one, then you need to use the steps outlined here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218
It's pretty easy for me to break it down into 4 steps, but each step is made up of a lot of things that I have learned as I went.
Read all that you can, there is more than enough information on these forums.

In order to upgrade to the official Rogers ROM update, you need to upgrade your radio and SPL too and use Hero recovery from Amon_RA.
You can check your radio and SPL by booting to fastboot (shutdown your phone then press power+back button)
Follow this instructions for more details. You only need to follow the upgrade part.
It works fine, it is what I just did.
Run the RUU without the phone attached and once the setup screen has loaded go to your windows temporary files folder, find Rom1.zip and extract boot.img, system.img and userdata.img to your Android SDK tools folder.
Plug the phone back and follow the instructions from the link asero just gave you to flash the new Radio and SPL. Be very careful on this step.
After rebooting into fastboot, verify that you now have the right Radio and SPL then run these commands to flash the Rogers ROM
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot reboot
If needed, you can then flash the file from this post to root the system (it's for the european 3.05 but it worked fine for me). Thanks much to vmaxada.
Hope this helps

Just use this method. You'll need a hero recovery after updating. That's easy to flash though.
This method worked great for me, thanks!
Just one issue... my phone now says I'm roaming on Fido, when I am a Fido customer. I called Rogers and they say it's a known issue, and made a note in my account that I'm seeing this issue. That hopefully means I can avoid roaming charges on my next bill.
I asked a tech support person whether, after my internet access is re-enabled, if I can return to using a custom ROM, and he didn't know. 1.6 Donut has the GPS / 911 fix already included.
Thanks for confirming it worked for you.
Can you please post simplified steps? I'm kinda confused/not too much of a technical guy.

Installed SPL 1.33.2010, am I rooted? What do I do next?

I am very confused, i keep going in circles. Before you say use the search, I have. I just seem to get more and more confused. As in my title, am I rooted and what steps do I need to take now?? I had the perfect spl and now I updated to the newest one. I am unsure what to do now. I thought I should download Amon Ras recovery image but once I flash it, the recovery mode does not boot. Please help! Thanks.
What phone? What ROM? What steps did you take to get the SPL on to the phone? Is it an engineering SPL with S-OFF? What recovery are you using?
You need to provide more information.

Make sure you use the recovery that says G in the end, not H. This is because you have 32B.

For notice:
radio is like BIOS drivers (this is not a ROOT)
SPL is like BIOS bootloader (this is not a ROOT, enginered one only gives you ability to use fastboot and to load some modificated ROM outside of OTS)
ROOT have 2 parts:
kernel with some modifications
modificated SU app installed in system
So after changing SPL you have no ROOT at all

Go in fastboot by pressing back+power (while your phone is switched off) and tell as what your SPL and radio version is. I suspect it's a 1.33.xx.xx SPL and 3.22.xx.xx radio, but you should better tell us in order to help you.
HBOOT is 1.33.0010
RADIO 3.22.30.17
Im on a 32b, S-ON H.
Are you sure it's 32B, S-ON H. If it's 32B, it should be S-ON G. Be very careful. If you flash your 32B Magic with a ROM that is meant for a 32A, you may brick your phone.

what originally happened is that i accidentally flashed my phone with an 32a RUU update, which didnt finish and got stuck on the RUU mode screen. I flashed it with an arabic RUU and i now my phone is up and running again. That is definitely what comes up on the fastboot screen. Is there a 32b RUU that I can update to? or can i root my phone?
Official 3.03.990.6 SenseUI ROM for Vodafone - is where I got the rom from.
You should follow the instructions on this post. A friend of mine did the same thing and I used those instructions to install Amon_RA's ROM for 32B Magic.
Since you' ve already installed the Arabic ROM, you should do the rest:
Then follow below link to root the phone:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how...-in-one-click/
Then start phone recovery mode and update the SPL to ENG SPL 1.33. 2005 from below link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529019
Your phone should be 32A now, if you would like to restore to 32B follow below link:

Good luck

Put the flashrec.apk in the androidsdk folder. From a command prompt (the path should be that of your androidsdk folder) run:
Code:
adb install flashrec.apk
Put the exact name of the flashrec app you downloaded.
thanks. btw the image version i am using is 2.56.494.7. does that mean any above that i can upgrade to?
Sir, you are a legend. I've finally sorted it after a couple of stressful days without my phone!
