I found a media player call "Wuzhenhua player" that plays more video format that other media player support from a Chinese android forum. I believe this is the first media player in android that support flv, rmvb, rm, and flac file format I have ever seen. The development is still in every early stage, so it's just a proof of concept for now. The app doesn't support full screen and auto rotate, but it DOES play flv and rm video as I have tested it from my Droid. It got potential to be the "CorePlayer" on android. That's why I think we can give it a try, and share this app.
Wuzhenhua player support format: 4xm,8bps,aac,ac3,eac3,amv,ape,dca,imc,alas,rm,rmvb,nuv,ptx,tta,wma,wmv,flic,
flac,flv,g726,h261,h263,h264,mp1,mp2,mp3,mp4,smc,tmv,dvdsub,dvbsub
P.S. I do not develop this app, all credit goes to the developer WUZHENHUA, and there's a source link from androidin.net

EDIT: just tried it out with a 45 mins rmvb format file, works flawlessly... now waiting for the landscape version...
P/S: don't try to turn it into landscape mode if u are watching the movie, it's cause u to restart the movie...
*for those of you who can't read chinese, this is what i can do to help you guys, check out the pictures below... i put some translation on it...

ok will try
Works well on Acer Liquid with Android 2.1 (heavy modified LCR1.1-rom).
However I dont play videos on my phone that often, so removed it again until there is support for English Locale in the application.
But nice to see that people are developing and actually make progress!
is there a english ver?
it's a bit surprising seeing above replies, but i wasn't able to play any of my xvid's properly. (They are the standard ones that i play on my PC)..First they played very very choppy even worse than yxflash and then they stopped playing altogether somehow..
Btw I have a nexus one.
@ kiay, Thanks for the translation. Works great. Guess I should have learned chinese instead of spanish. Thanks again.

Hi;
I was looking for a good media player for my HTC Trinity WM5 based Pocket PC. Someone advised TCMP which I downloaded and installed, it plays one of the files but the whole screen becomes very distorted and is in the most unwatchable.
The file is an mpeg1 file.
I just did a search on Google and it says its compatible with MP3, WMA, WAV, AC-3, ASF, AMR, Ogg Vorbis, DivX, XviD, MPEG1, MPEG4-SP, WMV, AVI.
Its should play fine but it is very tempermental TCMP is also discontinued.
I also have an mpg2 file that i`d like to play, any ideas on an alternative.
Ta
coreplayer is the comercial followup to the discontinued TCMP
As far as i know the TCPMP is also available as freeware ... it changed the name to Beta Player: http://betaplayer.com/
But, there arent any news about a release of this player Still waiting for a long long time ...
first it was named betaplayer then they changed it to TCMP
then they made a commercial version called coreplayer
no new development have been don to the old one since that i know of
and if they changed the name back to the original one that too is news to me
I've fixed my problem, I did another search in these forums and found a guide on installing TCPMP there is a second .cab which I had not seen before, the player now works flawlessly.
Only problem is installing TCPMP this time knocked out thd Bassfix that I had run, so now the sound is tinny again.
I'll run the Bassfix again and see how it goes.

Isn't i easier to shell out the $20 for the commercial CorePlayer than waiting? These devs surely deserve the financial support (too).

Actually there is a trial version
I don´t remember where on this big and great site I found it...
The only complaint I don't like about Core Player is: it does not support sub titles. So I still have TCPMP installed so I can watch movies with srt subtitles.

There is NO trial version of CP. If you're referring to the 1.1.1 Coreplayer.CAB file posted by some people on the XDA-Devs forums, it's a cracked, pirated copy.
Please also report occurrences of people posting this CAB file. It is a pirate copy and posting it should be sanctioned.

Yeah, sure, the same I say. Nevertheless, it's still way above everyting else particularly when it comes to video playback efficiency and compatibility. That is, it can be safely purchased even w/o trying it first - as long as you don't want to play back an unsupported format (e.g., RMVB) or don't want unsupported features like subtitles.

Oops, sorry I was referring to that copy and didn´t know was pirate...
I know the point of view of XDA-DEVS about it and didn´t want to cause any problem.
My sincere apologies
Of course I´ll be aware to report any occurrences or spam

And for starters; get a decent player first... WMP is great for music, but horrible for Video... I'd recommend CorePlayer. And then code your movies to DIVX like already suggested
Absolutely!!! Good catch Moaske
I love CorePlayer 1.2.5, makes a huge difference on my TyTN II!
If you dont want to go the paying money route (or the piracy route) the Core Player guys also have a more stripped down and less optimized but free player called TCPMP, look out for that
Magic Video Converter 8 is what i use, converts anything to anything just about. Even converts to Flash Video!
yeah im looking for a high quality app, used pocket divx encoder, it was ok, and spb mobile dvd, and thats ok, but can't up the settings to increase the quality as much as id like to.
currently for vid files i sometimes don't convert and throw the whole file on there

Just install the cab?; there are 2 folders in the zip, one with a cab, and another with some dll's and a .reg
currently there is no perfectly working plugin for RMVB, at least not on Topaz. The above mentioned plug will play back in windows meida player but you won't be able to fast forward. some times the movie might get stuck and stop halfway, depends on the encoding of the file.
There is another mplayer ported for WM, it plays fine, and able to fast forward but the only problem the video is too small, may be like less than 1/8 of of the Topaz's screen size. So far it seems no one knows how to increase the resolution on that.
I think someone told me of one that you have to pay for a few weeks ago, but wondering if there is some free apps now. For the pc there is a bunch like VLC, Gom and KM player that play every video format. It would be nice to be able to take advantage of the hdmi output.

I didn't see it on the vlc website. Do you know where to find it? I did a search, but nothing came up. It did mention the ability to play files from your computer remotely, but that is streaming so it wouldn't be HD or great quality I imagine.

VLC hasn't been ported for Android yet.
That said, the guys that are releasing a PSX emulator and working on an Android N64 emulator, are supposedly going to working on porting VLC in their spare time. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/playstation-emulator-coming-to-android-courtesy-of-yongzh-and-z/

I just installed yxplayer and it won't play a 1.4gb mkv file well at all. It is just a picture every few screens. Maybe the phone can't handle the file size, but my friend has an mkv player he got from china and it is bad a$$. It plays all file types and has mini hdmi out and I doubt it has a processor and ram as much as the evo. It's been out a lil while I'm sure. It has it's own screen but will output to an hd tv and looks just like you were playing a blue ray.
Probably thats the case... my mkvs were 640x480 anime shows. Havent tried anything hi-def...
On a side note, yxplayer is available as a trial only (2 min play time limit, tho some vids played for more and some reqlly did cut off after 2min), and if you wanna buy/pirate it - you won't be able to. The app for some dumb reason uses phone's imei for registration, which is gsm-only =O

Ok, so I'll wait for vlc, or another player to come out. Although I really won't need to play many movies on my phone. I will use my laptop if anything.
Dont forget about CorePlayer... they're working on a version for android as well. CorePlayer for winmo played mkv and nearly everything else I threw at it (performance on the other hand was a totally different subject, lol)
Any idea of a release date for Coreplayer? I've been converting my files for the longest time now but sometimes I don't get a chance to in the case of downloading a football match.
Its been in development for year(s) now, waiting for better NDK on android... Froyo seems to be exactly what they were missing so we should be seeing the app in few months, i hope...
Hey, I was using MX player Pro build 1.9.3 without any issues.
Today it updated to 1.9.5 from Play Store.
Since the update, I cannot play any video that contains a WMV1 or WMV3 video stream.
The player tries HW decoder, then SW, then gives an error:
"This video format (wmv3) is not supported."
All those videos used to play back perfectly in the past up to (and including) build v1.9.3.
What's going on...?
I'm on Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. I launch videos using ES File Explorer.
This setup has worked absolutely flawlessly in the past for WMV files or AVI files containing WMV video tracks.

Message itself clear. Looks like MX Player has dropped support for some more codecs.
May be yet another patent issue. Anyhow, Custom Codec will work as usual with all codecs.
Not happy with this either. Especially for an app I paid for.
Hopefully just a bug they will fix.

Dear jguy, the solution you supplied doesn't work. I followed it to the letter. Version 1.9.3 was flawless. I'm sorry I upgraded. I'm a paying user. I use my tablet to make a living.
