If I legitimately return my hero to Best Buy because it's started to peel, am I able to use the nandroid backups I have stored on my SD card with my new phone ?
I saw that the backups are stored under what looks like a serial number ? Is this physically linked to the device ?

You can use them no problem. I just got a replacement and had to do the same thing. As soon as you root your new Hero and make a nandroid it will create a new folder with your new serial number. Then just take your backups out of your old folder, put them in the new one you just made and you're good to go.

I am curious because i backed up my original stock rom with all of my apps and all that sprint junk, and now i would like to back-up the custom rom with a bunch of the sprint bloat removed. However I would like to have the option to go back to either of them. Please advise, thanks
Look in the nandroid file on the sdcard. You will see multiple files in there from all your backups labeled by date/time.

So how can you select which one to restore from? I'm assuming it'll restore from the last one that is backed up. How do you choose a earlier backed up one? What I was starting to do was just copy the whole nandroid folder thinking that it was just one back up file that just overwrote the last one.
I'm new to android, so I'm sure someone out there has a better answer.
The recovery image that I have installed only gives the option for restoring the latest nandroid image and no chooser menu. That would be a nice option, but I suppose you could pop out the SD and move the later files to a different directory so that the "last" backup is the one you want to restore.
I've already performed one restore and it didn't give me the option of picking which image to restore. It just picked the one with the last timestamp, which was the one I wanted at the time.

Cool thanks, i'm about to do a few backups and will check out the file structure after each one. Guess I'll just keep a master copy of all the backups I do so I can do as you suggest and remove the ones I don't use for the purpose of flashing just the one that I want to flash.
I wanna do backups at various stages on my phone so this will help.
Yeah. They are seperated by time stamp so just turn on usb storage and you can sort which one you want to have the newest time stamp. Also, one thing to note is they are also seperated by some kind of phone id. I had some Nandroids from my Dream still on my sd card and I noticed two seperate folders containing time stamps. Just something to note.
Just got my Sensation and it is a very solid device; certainly much more solid than the Vibrant in respect to the hardware.
If the hTC is not rooted then how in the world can I restore all my apps that I have backed up via Titanium Backup? If its difficult than waiting until a root for the Sensation might make more sense and I'll keep using the Vibrant.
Thanks!

We have yo wait as we cannot even get temproot. I have all my backups in TB also but what's important to me is to freeze the bloatware..its killing the battery. If you can't wait just use the Vibrant for now till the bootloaderi is ulocked. I'm doing that with my MT4G but using the sensation 90% of the time. It sucks but we just have to wait it out

As I thought but thanks for the advice regardless.
I utilized MyBackup Pro which was installed on my Nexus One (rooted) to make a backup of all of my streaming applications. The .apk files are stored in your SD card under Rerware I believe.
Install the same application on your Sensation and make a test backup of a single application. Just so that it can create the proper folder directories.
You will essentially move the backup data from the SD card on your old phone to your new one and then perform a restore. This should work for most apps. Excluding the ones that need root access.
I saved my TB & system/app to my pc then copied it over to a folder on my Sensation and installed them from there.

Many thanks for this suggested method. Going to try this tonight
I came from the Vibrant also - MyBackup did save all of the apk's and system data to the Rerware folder on the external SD of the Vibrant. I put the SD from the Vibrrant into the Sensation and it did restore all of the apk's - NOT the data as the Sensation does not have root.
The only data I was able to restore was the call logs, sms & mms messages....
I also have a backup made in Titanium Pro, but it will not run on the Sensation without root. I'd love to have a way to even be able to restore saved apk's from Titanium.....
I use the tmo sgs2 and i have experience flashing roms. i know how to backup, flash and restore roms. its not rocket science. today i flashed the ics beta for my dad on his sprint epic 4g(sgs1). his sd card only had like 100mb free so i used my 32gb sd card with more than 15gb free so that i could download the zips needed and backup his current rom. i flashed his ics beta flawlessly without any problems at all. i backed up his og rom and everything was dandy. the problem started when i got home and decided to transfer his rom backup to my laptop's hard drive so that i wouldnt have that 1gig+ filling my sd card. when i mounted my phone storage and went into my cwm folder and into backups however i dont see any folders with today's date on it. so im not sure if its a backup from my sgs2 or my dads sgs.
My question is... is there a way that i can go into the file and maybe see which device the folder is from? like if theres a sgs2 specific SOMETHING that'll help me identify which one is which?
i tried being thorough so you guys know exactly what happened so you can help me with this.
thanks in advance
Can't you just go by the file date on the contents in the backup folders?

that was actually what i did originally to see which one it was. i also went into the folder info and none of them had today's date.
is there any possibility that it'll be on the phone's internal storage?
anyone?
Hi everyone - THIS IS MY FIRST POST!!!
I've been flash'n and ROM'n for the past two weeks since I finally got the nerve to root my phone. I now have three nandroid backups of different ROMS with different setups and I want to make another. The backups of course take up space and I was hoping to move them to my laptop. I will of course keep one on my phone at all times. My question is whether or not moving them would cause any problems. Assuming at some point I want to use one of them I would just move it back to the CWM backup file I have on my external sd card and flash it in recovery. Am I wrong to think that moving the files to the laptop and then back to my phone, when needed, shouldn't cause any issues?
Thanks and I want to say that this whole site is amazing and VERY informative!
no every thing will be fine. Move the backup folder to your laptop and when ever you need to restore move the backup file to the sd card but keep in mind that you remember the date of back up roms
Thank you sir - Can I also change the name of the md5 file?
One more thing - is this image verification thing a hazing of sorts or will i continue to have to verify before each and every post?

its better not to change the name and after 10 posts the verfication will be removed and you will be able to post directly
Moving NANDROID Backup
There was just something put out about an app named AIRDROID, which should make the process of moving NANDROID backups so much easier. Check it out.
AndrevRoot.

Can I take a TWRP backup on one of my Verizon phones and move it over to the other verizon phone with no ill effects? the partitions are the same etc if they are both verizon? What all do I need to do if I just want to pull the card from one and put it in the other?

Yes. You must change the folder under twrp/backups/ to match the new serial number of the new device.
Worked great thanks
