I spend quite a lot of time travelling, and find my HD2 has an ideal sized screen for watching films on when on the move.
Previously I had the Touch HD - which was also great.
I've been using a program which I found on here called MP4forHD - which works great - but all the videos are slightly out of sync. I'm processing them on a quad core 2.83ghz PC with 8gb or RAM, so its definately not the PC thats the problem. When I check them on my PC once they've converted - they're already out of synce - so its not the phone.
The program converts directly from a DVD or file - which is exactly what I want.
Prior to MP4forHD, I was using another tool I found on here which was just called Encoder. It only did files, so I had to use DVD Decryptor, then VOB joiner to make a file that it could re-encode. I've tried it just now, and its also out of sync.
Both these programs have a setting for HTC Touch HD - so they encode at the correct resolution. I've tried fiddling with settings, but no matter what I do, it always seems to be out of sync.
What programs are folk using to get a good video file - and what settings? I'm away tomorrow morning on holiday and have a pile of out of sync films to watch! I hope I can get some suggestions so that I can re-encode a couple of them to be in sync
Cheers...
Whoops - just realised I've posted this in the general / general board - not the general Windows Mobile one...
I'll repost - but if a mod sees this, please remove it.

I'm after a media player for WM 5.0 as it seems that my Univeral didn't come with a decent one (I don't consider WMP to be decent - lacks one of my requirements). I have two real requirements - might add some if I think of them:
- Must be able to play .mp4 files, .avi (DivX if possible), .wmv and .mpeg
- Important: must be able to skip through files one after another.
Explanation: the XDA2i which I used to have comes with an 'Album' program which can be used to view photos and videos. This had two great features; the ability to view photos and videos in one program (not a problem for me as I have an even better photo viewer now) and the ability to point it at a folder of videos and then watch them one after the other, skipping to the next just by pressing on the d-pad.
Can anyone name a good media player which can meet both criteria? I've looked at some comparison charts but none seem to specify what seems to be a small feature to them but is actually an important one to me.
I have tried TCPMP and that doesn't seem to meet the second criterion.
Suggestions?
Look at TCMP again, but this time look in the settings menu and configure some hotkeys to skip tracks, there are is no shortage of keys on the Universal when it comes to picking a hotkey.
I'm willing to have another go, but doesn't 'skip track' mean to just go to the next one in the playlist?
Due to the way I use my device (take lots of short videos when out with friends) I can't be constantly adding them to playlists. The number of files I deal with is too large for me to have to organise them myself.
TCMP's playlist idea is completly different to mediaplayer. Browse to your folder in TCMP's file selector and use the select ALL option to give yourself a temporary playlist with all the files in the folder. You can even use the DIR command to select your Media folder which may have further folders below it with music, pictures and video in them and everything will be selected for your playlist.
Ahh okay, I didn't realise one could do this. Going to give it another go then report back.
Thanks.
No probs, it will also play your images too so you've got everything your XDA IIi could do, and probably more
Seems to be okay, I'm a bit confused with the buttons but I have set it so they at least change the playing video. I also managed to get it to play all the files in a folder.
Its best to pick something you will remember, like 'N' for next and 'P' for previous.
Can someone help please?
I have just copied the TV highlights of a particular cycle "tour" on to my hard drive and in turn on to DVD. How can I put this video footage onto my PDA to watch during lunchtime, etc?
There are 2 directories on the DVD - these are VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS. I assume that this is all needed on the PDA to watch what I have of the tour.
Do I need special software? One person tells me that all I need to do is change the *.VOB to *.MP4. This doesn't appear to work.
All help is appreciated.
Thanks,
S.
Having re-read what I have just typed - the title doesn't make it clear what I am trying to do.
The DVD bit was just a way of transferring from my TV set-top hard-drive to my PC.
I then want to copy from my PC to my PDA.
All I am ultimately trying to do is be able to watch what is on my hard-drive on the PDA. It just so happens the video codecs (something I dont' know a lot about) and file formats *.VOB don't appear to let me watch what I want.
Thanks.

Spb Mobile DVD is a pretty popular app that'll convert DVDs to a format you can view on your PPC. It's not free, but it's worth the cost if you get good use out of it. It's also really easy to run.
I'm also moving this to a more appropriate forum.

Hi TaurusBullba.
Thanks for the tip.
Doing this kind of conversion how much disc space would 1Gb of VOB file take up - do you know?
Is it cheaper direct or could I get it anywhere else?
How does it deal with copyright protected discs?
Thanks again.
S.
since pda's have a res of 240_320 and 480_640
and dont support surround sound
and can use formats which take up less space then
old mpeg2 which is used in vob's on the dvd's
so the movies will be much much smaller then the dvd is
Hi,
I've been searching the forum and reading a few posts but I still have some basic questions about converting my DVD's to play on touch HD. Apologies in advance if some seem a bit obvious but having never converted anything i'm sure what the best route is. OKay:
1: I've decoded some dvd's and copying them to my hard drive -i presume this is necessary for all dvd's?
2: I then have to convert them to 800x480 - which is the best software? SUPER looks confusing so haven't really used it much, and i downloaded a trial of iSofter which seemed a bit easier BUT which is the best software for a beginner? Something easy and obvious?
3: how long does it take? when I ran SUPER and iSofter it seemed to take 3/4 hours for 1 DVD. IS this normal? Or have do I have to change the settings and choose something to make it faster?
Once I've managed to copy over my first DVD I'm sure all the other posts about quality, resolutions, etc will make a lot more sense. Just want to try and watch one...
Cheers,
Paddy
I always do it a little differently. I use AutoGK to back up my DVD's, which will back them up to CD sized, whilst still being watchable on my TV using my stand-alone divx player, (or the TV out from your graphics card). This typically takes 3-5 hours using my 2.3ghz athlon. If I then want to watch on my PDA, I use pocketdivxencoder, which takes about 20-40 mins to reduce it down.
Both these pieces of software are free, and are very easy to use.
My thoughts....
I myself use Handbrake to rip any DVD that I have to my PC and then use either AnyVideoConverter or Format Factory to convert the files to an acceptable AVI quality for all my family's mobile devices. All 3 programs are straightforward and easy to use. Below are links for you to find out for yourself.
HandBrake
Any-Video-Converter
Format Factory
Hope that helps!!
PS. And as for the time it takes to convert the videos, yes those times are about right, depending on you PC's CPU. The CPU is the single biggest factor when ripping and converting video, with memory coming in 2nd and hard drive space a close 3rd.
DVD Catalyst is the best and will do it all. What format, how good of quality and whatever else you can think of. It is user friendly out of the box/download and as you get use to the settings you can adjust them accordingly. Google it and give the trial a shot. I have use this software for years now and have yet to find anything as good.
I use Magic DVD Ripper to convert DVD to AVI
To convert to .mp4 i use AONE FLV to AVI MPEG WMV 3GP MP4 iPod Converter it actually converts every format not just FLV very easy to use and good results.
All in all a very easy process
Hi All,
Cheers for the replies - really useful. So the timing thing was right, and it looks like that new PC I need will have be bought sooner rather than later as the CPU, etc on current one is pretty slow.
Just one more thing - what setting you guys use? I have a Touch HD so I presume the screen should be set to 480x800, but I haven't a clue about rates, frames pre second, sound quality, etc. Some pointers would be brilliant. So is AVI good for smaller file sizes. The files just have to be good enough to watch on the train etc without to much flicker or jumping. Hopefully I'll be watching The Wire on the train soon!
Cheers (again)

If your going do display in widescreen so the device in sideways then the res will be 800x480 unless the media player automatically does this?
The frame rate want to be the same as original source you can find this by right clicking properties on the file and tab summary, the best format for mobile video is .mp4 as they hold the quality but are low in data, as the less data you have to pull @ a time off a memory card helps too.
Hi guys,
Just a quick question, hoping someone might know the answer?
Is there a max file size for a video to be synced to the phone using Zune.
I spent aaages last night ripping my Avatar DVD, and converting it to the correct format - i was hoping to have it at a decent quality, so the file ended up being 2.7GB, however it wont complete the Sync, it gets to around 80% maybe a little more but then fails saying the phone isn't responding... There is 3.6GB free on the phone so it isn't running low on space.
I've not got a problem syncing usually, and smaller video files sync fine with no issues - if there isn't a file size limitation, does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Or maybe even some suggestions for software that would be able to split the video file into smaller parts?
Cheers
Paul
I've never run into problems syncing however I've nice synced a movie that damn big. Lol.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Hi guys,
I've managed to split the file using a tool called Super This is a really great Tool for free.
Oh and Avatar looks incredible on the Omnia 7, ripped from the DVD following This Guide.
It took a few Hours altogether, but was really worth it.
This thread can be closed i Guess!
Cheers
Paul
what programs did you use to rip the movie?
I can find 100 programs online which convert each VOB file into a separate wmv file. I want of course a single movie.
I tried DVDFab but it has problems syncing the audio and video
Follow this great guide Here
It seems a little long winded but the results are Fantastic. On average from inserting the DVD and having the final file ready to transfer to your phone takes around 2-3 hours. Video ripping / conversion is really processor intensive stuff.
Once you have the final file ready to transfer - you may find it too large to transfer as i did, so use the Super tool to split the file - Here
Enjoy!
having just purchased an HTC media link for less than half the release price at £44 my next step was to check xda to see what type of hacks are available. unfortunately, repeated searching throws up little beyond the codec/filetype issues i'm likely to encounter.
is anybody working on the DG H100 firmware? am a little surprised to discover an htc product without any dev interest.
would be nice to see a minimal b+w gui & a more robust set of codecs - or is that a phone/pc problem? i'm just dipping my toes into DLNA so apologies if this is a stupid question.
any media link tips, links or suggestions welcome.

DG H100 on Desire Bravo
How are you getting on with the media link?
Your signature says that you have a Desire Bravo, are you using it with that?
The HTC site lists a load of phones that it is compatible with and the Bravo isn't on that list.
Would I be right in thinking that this just means that that phone wont work straight out of the box as it is missing the required native programs and I need to install an app to make the bravo a DLNA media server - e.g. iMediaShare Lite and that then i can *push* photos etc to my TV via the Media Link?
Any tips that you have will be appreciated, thinking of getting a media link, they look like a great gadget.
received it today and it works perfectly out of the box with my win7 pc & desire (same setup as sig).
the hotspot it sets up initially can be logged into through the pc - from where you can enter the ssid, encryption type & password for the home network. that's it.
watching a movie as i type. file is sat on the pc in the next room. selected on my desire with skifta, playing on the big telly.
in answer to your question, i've been using skifta to watch pc based files on my mobile for a few weeks, i'd suggest that if you can view things successfully using that method then it'd be worth adding the media link to your set up. from what i've read imediashare & twonky do much the same thing.
update
after a few weeks use, im considering an alternative NAS hd solution to wireless streaming to tv.
when the DG H100 works it's faultless. unfortunately around half of the media files i'm looking to view show up as unrecognised despite numerous attempts at converting to a media link friendly codec using http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/ - which allows hard coding of subtitles
