I think the correct answer here is that if you have to ask, you probably can't do it.
There's code for Android everywhere. The Android SDK is free and easily available for download. This forum is filled with people trading knowledge.
Given the pain in the butt of updating phones with broken ROMs, it's probably good that there's some "barriers to entry" the ROM cooking arena.
I haven't tried compiling a 2.1 ROM, but it shouldn't be to hard to make one if you do some Googling.

Learning how to compile a 2.1 ROM took me a couple days and so much Googling that I almost went blind...
Start here:
http://source.android.com
If you want to start out somewhere to add your own custom touch try this software i wrote for beginners, it will get you into wanting to do it for every rom you come accross and also make you want to progress and do more
Mod edit
wow.. the most recent post on the source android site is from 2008... is that site still maintained?
the android roadmap page is talking about cupcake, that's 2 releases ago!
not cool Google.. NOT cool!

Hello everyone,
Sorry for not understanding but i am new to this and definitely willing to learn, Id like to know what is the best Hero Rom (smoothest with the most things working) and if once i have installed it, is it possible to go back to my normal rom if i dont like it.
Id like to know how to download apps such as Apps2SD and themes such as the good ones on here (is a special rom needed or a certain rom ?)
Sorry for all the questions but please help i am willing to make a dontation to somebody who can help me.
Thanks Everyone
This is a place for discussion for more people who are experienced, thats why its called "development" as for themes those are under the "themes" section.....
if your looking for n00b resources for full on n00bs please don't post annoying threads here. Learn to look **** up on google and in under 10 seconds you would have found
http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/
for how to root, one click rom install, and how to restore back to factory. Or even above your own damn post there are n00b resrouces.
as for ROMs this is the DEVELOPMENT section. So people need to stop asking for a perfect rom. Use cyanogen stable roms if you want stablility. If not ROMs come out every 2-3 days for evil and every couple weeks for other ROMs. They are NOT stable
Qtek=fastest most stable does not work on most MT3G (this is believed to be kernel issues with 2.7xxxx)
Evil= 50/50 depending on his builds, he likes to f* stuff up alot and patch within a few hours
cyanogen 4.1.11.1=android 1.6 AOSP(android open source project)

I did do a search and i did find that site although since i am such a noob i dint even know what rooting my Magic was for :/.
Could you tell me what rooting is for ? eg if i root my device once does that mean i can use all the stuff you guys are uploading eg just put a theme on it straight away?
Cheers James
rooting your phone gives you controll of the / files of yoru phone. It lets you install roms and such. i suggest looking at the latest video of rooting your magic and the video of how to install a rom. it'll put you right at par with where alot of users on this forum are at. only like 15 mins of video too.
Did you miss the sticky in this forum? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538979
Hi guys,
Over at the HTC Hero forum I have been developing a kitchen to help ordinary people learn how to build their own ROM. It allows you to do basic things such as rooting a shipped ROM, adding apps2sd, modifying the task killer memory threshold, etc.
The appropriate settings are now in place to make it work for the Magic.
Here is the link to the kitchen:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
Before you flash your new custom ROM made from this kitchen, please make a Nandroid backup first of your existing ROM!
Thank you, and enjoy!
Just a question - is there a Wiki page which lists all the shipped ROMs available for the Magic? I couldn't find any on my own. I only found the ones at the htc.com site.
...
Hi man, i just want to thank you for your kitchen, i dont know a answer to your question
but i want to reserve this post,
my plan is to make a short instruction on how to port a rom from hero, using your kitchen... (hope its ok with you)
not a full how to, but som guidence... cause i am still learning and still making many misstakes...
But i am gonna try to make my best.
I DONT HAVE TIME TO MAKE IT NOW... LATER.

That's a good idea, and that also gives me another idea for the kitchen.
Usually when we port a ROM from another device, we just replace the other device's boot.img-kernel with our own device's boot.img-kernel. Although there may be issues with driver incompatibility, this is the general way to get the ROM booting. (Also you have to make sure you use the correct base address when using mkbootimg)
Wow
sorry it's off topic but damn good to see dsixda over here on android. I remember your roms from my diamond and elfin. Now i think a nexus one is my next device if you're cooking for em lol. As for the kitchen i think this is an amazing idea to get some more chefs in the game.

Hey man, I remember you ;-) The kitchen is working for Nexus One. However, I'm not cooking ROMs this time because public ROMs are too much work when you want to satisfy hundreds of people at once The kitchen will take the load off the cooks and also provide an enjoyable learning experience for people who want to customize a ROM the way they like it. We already have someone who has made a public ROM from this kitchen, and hopefully there will be more!
I am still looking for the downloadable shipped rom. hopefully it would be found soon. i looked on the htc site but i guess i am still lost. but thanks again for something great.
Sounds like fun. I'll try it out on myTouch 1.2

Update 4/16 after several attempts with different shipped and custom roms i have finally gotten one to boot with touch input, which has been one of the biggest hurdles for this phone. Problem is niether of the roms i have will connect to T-Mobile or wifi. Any ideas?

You can try this as well:
http://www.htc.com/www/support/magic.html
so with this one should be able to build roms from any rom to try make it work on your phone?

As long as they are Magic ROMs, then yes they should work.
ok so the base has to be magic for it to work, so in total it is to maske it easier to modify roms to your liking? no porting ect?

Yes you need a Magic ROM as your base. In theory it should work with any Magic ROM, but I'm not 100% familiar with all the variants of the HTC Magic so maybe there are incompatibilities?
I'll be working on porting ROMs later in the day.. I have to try the new porting scripts on my Hero first.
ok, i will give it a go when we can try porting a bit more fun working with android 2.1
i just noticed a problem with the T-Mobile myTouch 3G ROMs, as my script only looks for "HTC Magic" in the build.prop and not T-Mobile myTouch 3G... I'll get to fixing that soon. I'll check for "sapphire" instead, which is more generic.
Ok I have put up an update to the kitchen, version 0.24. This one should recognize all ROMs from all variants of the HTC Magic (e.g. T-Mobile myTouch 3G).
Also another option has been added, which will allow you to port a ROM from another Android device to your Magic (it will boot up but you may have to make some changes to get everything working properly, such as drivers). Has been tested on an HTC Hero.
Hey
Id like to (also as a learning expirence) to make my own ROM completely from ASOP.
Is there a simple guide or something similar? Ive read the Android source code site but its a bit to "stretched out". A noob guide would be nice.
Thanks.

The problem with this guide is that its based on a specific device. A global generic one would be nice.
Thanks for the link anyways.
Okay, I know this is an APPLICATIONS' thread, but since the ROMs' thread is "dead" for months, I thought to post it here...
Any decent (available) chef, to cook me one rom EXACTLY as I want it?
Kind regards and let me know, fellas.
Andy.
Actually the HD2 thread is not dead at all. For example I release a kitchen where you can build a rom exactly how you like it and customise it your self.
If you have never built a rom before have a look at my thread for beginner chiefs and then you should move on to my advanced version. It is really easy simply click on the apps you dont want remove them, click start, it builds the rom for you then you flash!!
The links to my threads are below

You LOVED the gaelic, did you? Hehehe...
Okay, Let me start by saying two things. Yes I'm new to this. And yes I looked in the forums for something similar.
Now, basically I just recently rooted my Samsung Galaxy S 4G. It is Model SGH-T959V, Firmware 2.2.1, Baseband T959VUVKB5, Build FROYO.VUVKB5. There are a few things I was wanting to ask the community.
Is it possible or a good idea to update it to JB, ICS, GB. And if so what are the benefits and procedures to do so?
Secondly, I've been looking into getting some custom roms. So far the only things I have found haven't been comprehensible. They either require a higher firmware version, have no explanation as to what the rom does, or have highly technical steps which are way beyond me. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what would be some good roms? What they do? And the benefits of using them?
If this has all been discussed somewhere else and have just missed it, please feel free to link to the thread and close this one.
ok i see you are new to the concept of flashing and rooting ....etc) you should try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1001759

First, you should start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470716 Second here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V now you have all the source of instructions and guides to follow all you have to do is take some time to read and search. and now good luck to you and your phone..
Well, as for the Odin thing a lot of people have said it can brick your device, and that's not something wanna do.
As for the other guides, I started it, I got to the point where I'm updated to GB 2.3.6. The rest of the stuff didnt say what it was for, so I was unsure as whether or not to proceed. Are they required for flashing ROMs? Or just extra stuff?
The last one didn't seem to have anything really useful, but I didnt look at every last thing.
And what about useful ROMs? I've looked around online and a lot people recommend Cyanogenmod, although no one has said what it does. I looked at the steps and it seemed over complicated to install for someone new to this stuff.

In this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V it will guide you to rest of Custom rom's and kernel's that you must need to use in order to
start flashing custom rom and kernels. the rest is a guide which you can use and it will save you'r time from looking around.. The only rom which is very much stable to our phone are
GB and ICS while Cyanogenmod 10/10.1 are still in Alpha and beta stage..
Yeah, I saw that as I looked through it more. Just a lot of it is way over my head so it's gonna take me a while to get to it
That's right, you will never get lost by following that guide because everything you need to know are already in there.. just take some time to read and you
will be enlightened as you go on the process..
Well, my biggest problem is I keep looking for useful and cool ROMs, but haven't found any so far. So at the moment I can justify to myself to go through all those things just to not have anything to put on it. So far I like the GB look and feel much better than FROYO. I've found a few minor apps here and there, but so far nothing that has required flashing.
Or you can check some of the great ICS rom's we have, here i am going to provide some links of it for you.

This are just few of the rom's we have that i personally try and use it by myself, but you can have as much as you like and you can take a look at the development section and hand pick some
of the great rom's courtesy of our great dev's..
Cool, I'll check out those GB ones. Thanx
Good luck and make sure to follow as per OP's instruction of flashing the respective rom's to avoid further problem, u won't get lost as every instructions are provided
for the ease of use and flashing.. and take some time to each and every rom you flash so that you can personally experience the goodness and you can make a choice which rom you think it's best for you..
