How could Skype and Verizon lock this down ? Surely we could enjoy some Skype goodness over Sprint's network if they released this app ?

well if skype doesn't turn your phone into a node when not actively on a call (p2p network) here is the general useage
@70kbps
1 min ~ .5 MB
10 min ~ 5 MB
100 min ~ 50 MB
@5GB limit that's... a whole lot of min
they could lock it down to your skype account, and they could lock down .apk's to only be compatible with certain versions of android and won't install on others (I've seen the message before) and htc apps won't run outside senceUI... so I imageine if they lock it down so if you aren't running a certian phone it not installing....isn't an insane possibility.
But it will probably be bundled into some ota uninstallable update like the sprint navigation, or sprint tv. Which has been proven to work on at least some other networks. Sprint visual voicemail doesn't work... so maybe something like this.
whatever the case may be, I'm sure it will be easily busted into. I'll probally even have a go at it if it doesn't get done in a reasonable amount of time.

Are these limitations of CDMA, or just the Sprint version? Any way to correct them?

So I just got the Sprint version of the Touch Pro 2. Much to my surprise, it is lacking some functionality of its GSM counterpart.
#1: The Sprint dialer screen has a "Hold" button where the GSM version has an "Add Call" button. It sure was nice being able to instantly and easily conference in 1 or more other parties into a call.
#2: Bing and Google Maps can't instantly detect my position on this Sprint version the way they do on the GSM version. If I go into settings and use GPS to get the location, I have to wait a few minutes for the GPS to locate me. On the GSM version it finds you (presumably by using the cell towers) within about 5 seconds of you opening the app. The "Locate Me" option in Bing is actually greyed out when installing it on the Sprint Touch Pro 2. Is there any way to get this functionality?
#3: This one is not as big of a deal, but the weather app doesn't know where I am. On the GSM version, the weather sets itself to the correct city automatically. You can add another city if you like, but it automatically picks up your current city. I don't care about this one too much, but it would be nice. The other 2 (no "Add Call" and no "Locate Me") are borderline deal breakers for me.
Are these limitations just part of the Sprint ROM, or are they limitations of the CDMA technology itself? If this is a limitation of CDMA itself, then that is a major dissapointment to me. In fact, had I know about this beforehand I probably would have never left AT&T for Sprint. I got caught up in the cheaper pricing, and saw the Sprint version had a 3.5mm jack, but I wasn't aware I would have to give up my Bing/Google Maps and conference calling.
If this is a limitation in CDMA itself, then how on earth can anyone claim this is better than GSM? And also, if this is a limitation of CDMA itself, does anyone know what I would need to do in order to reverse this and port my numbers back to AT&T? Is that even possible or would I have to open a new account? Or if I port to T-Mobile, how long do i have to wait for Sprint to give me a refund on the 4 Touch Pro 2's I just bought?
I guess not too many people have owned the GSM version and the CDMA version, so you don't really see posts mentioning this stuff before you buy the CDMA version. After using the GSM version for several months, I don't know if I can give these features up.
#2 - I click locate me and am found nearly instantly. Takes about 5 seconds for the app to open and gps signal to be acquired. With quick gps it is much quicker.
I know nothing about #1 or #3 sorry.

You have a "Locate Me" option in Bing? What is your GPS set to in Bing's settings menu? I am not getting a locate me option...
I don't know about the conference calling or weather, neither really matter to me, but I can too attest (with Telus at least) that the GPS for Google Maps works very quickly.
Note that, as with any GPS, the first time you acquire a lock it will take a while. Subsequent locks should be much quicker.
As far as the GPS in google, try using the HTC supplied Quick GPS to get the most recent GPS info for your phone, it makes aquiring a signal a lot faster, also you can leave GPS on constantly if you like but it kills the battery the same way leaving bluetooth or wifi on does...
I dont think CDMA is limited o conference call, just not a built in part of the sprint dialer.I didn't even notice it until you brought it up but it's not really a concern for me. I'm sure that once the phone unlocker is out conference calling will be built into a lot of the ROMs people are cooking up...
For the weather I haven't seen an auto location update for CDMA, I haven't used the GSM model so it is interesting to hear that has it, another possible ROM tweak once the unlocker is available.
I will be upgrading my sprint tp2 to have the hd2 or "leo" sense ui which does have the location weather and a lot of other newer things, maybe even conference calling... But if you are not into flashing your phone maybe someone has made or is working on conference call and/or gps weather fix. Goodluck!

in the Bing main menu go to map, and on the maps menu there is an option called, "Track me using GPS", that will put the map onto your location and also allow you to search from your location... alternately on the Bing main menu there is a small line above the icon menu that says "Change Location", click on that then click on "Current GPS"... two different ways to search from your location but by using the map version is does track you as long as you have it selected...
#1: CDMA is limited to 2 calls at once, so you can conference call, but the system requires you to put the first call on hold, then place the second call for conference. It is not as robust as the GSM in this way.
#2: Look for a program called Quick GPS and enable it to download automatically. It will give your GPS an update every week that will assist in speeding up your lock. On my Sprint TP2 I get a lock within 5-10 seconds even indoors!
#3: no idea.

Really? Considering that everything is done telco-side why would there be that limitation?
Re 2 call limit, I don't know the details but that is what I have seen posted here.

Yeah, I know it works if I have it locate me using the GPS. The problem is, that takes several minutes to get a GPS lock and you can forget about getting a lock indoors.
It seems that Google Maps does indeed work. I just figured it wouldn't because Bing and the weather didn't. But it does. The problem with Google Maps is it is nowhere near as good as Bing.
If you open Google Maps though, notice how it locates you within about 5 seconds or so, even when you are in a basement. That is also what Bing does on a GSM phone.
With Bing being so much better than Google Maps, I would think that it would have full functionality on a WIndows Mobile phone. Especially when Google Maps does have full functionality on the same Windows Mobile phone.
If any of you have access to Microsoft communities, please voice to them that we want Bing to work on the Sprint Touch Pro 2. This is the 3rd largest carrier in the USA, and it is their flagship Windows Mobile phone. Not only that, but Google Maps actually works fine on the same phone, same carrier.

Yeah, I have my quick gps set to auto download too.
I should clarify here...
Tom Tom 7 works fine on my phone. So my GPS is working. Heck, Bing even works if I tell it to find my current location using GPS. Those programs take a few minutes to get a GPS lock though, and will never get a GPS lock if you are in a basement.
Google Maps has my location within about 5 seconds of me opening it- even if I am in a basement. Most of the time Google Maps already has my location by the time the app opens. It uses the cell towers to get your location.
Bing works the same way on a GSM phone. You tap the icon to open it, and it has your position already by the time the app opens. At the most, it will only take 5 seconds or so to locate you- even if you are indoors, in a basement.
You can also go into the settings of Google Maps and tell it to use your GPS, This takes longer than the cell tower location, but gives a more accurate reading. This is aparently the only way to use Bing on a Sprint Touch Pro 2.
On Verizon, Bing works just as fast for me as Google maps. The auto update weather is a function of the version of Touchflo 3d that is shipping with Windows Mobile 6.5 on the A&T phone.you are not going to see it on the Sprint phone until Sprint or the hacking community get that phone updated. For Sprint, their CEO is saying the beginning of 2010. For Verizon, we are hoping in the next couple of weeks.

FYI, the weather app I was talking about is on the Unlocked European version, running the stock WM 6.1 (WWE) and I used it on AT&T in the USA.
As for the Bing, I did some searching after I started this thread, and I found this- posted by a Microsoft rep on 9-21-2009, on a Microsoft owned forum:
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/.../thread/1a253558-b033-48da-9158-d45b618a6cd2/
"In case this might also help: The Bing team has been tracking and isolating this issue. They reported to me today that Bing does not work with CDMA at this time but they are continuing to investigate what they can do including collaboration with carriers. Note that some CDMA carriers lock GPS/Locate Me for 911 use only, hence some of this limitation issue."
So if yours is working as fast as your Google Maps, you probably have issues with your Google Maps too...
It would be far to easy to say that Microsoft sucks.... but come-on... they've known about issues with finding people on CDMA for months now and there is no sign of a fix. Google can lock on to a CDMA signal and give an approximate location - Why can't Bing?
The market for smartphones was Microsoft's to lose and they have done a marvelous job of doing just that. How can companys with much less resources put forward the amazing operating systems like Apple, Palm and Google and even Nokia, while MS just sits on its hands and loses its market. My next phone will NOT be a Windows phone.

I just hope they get it together. There is no reason why Google Maps should be getting tower location info and Bing can't.
The Imagio that I played with had the Location Weather just like my cooked TP, so I'm guessing you just need to wait for a new ROM. Also, you can hack in a ROM but you can't hack in a 3.5mm jack
i think hes talking about the cell tower triangulation that GSM can do which soon as u get a data connection its finds ur position instantly withing something like 2300meters. im not sure if CDMA can do that. but it is useful somewhat if u dont have a GPS signal it gives u a general location or can search for things nearby
It's called Assisted GPS and both GPRS and CDMA can do it. Telus' CDMA is within 1200ft or 800ft from experience depending on the number of towers it can see.

It may technically be possible for CDMA to do it, but the Bing app can't do it on CDMA devices. This is a known limitation that a Microsoft rep posted about over on the Bing forums...

A few questions about the Desire S.

Hi.
I have just got a Desire S on a 24 month contract with Orange (UK), unbranded phone from Carphone Warehouse.
My old handset was an LG GT540, and when using the web browser on that phone as i typed in the address bar it would show search suggestions as i typed..
My Desire S doesnt seem to do this. Is this something that HTC removed, or can it be enabled in anyway? Does anyone else have this issue? Having never had a HTC phone before im not sure if this could be be something that HTC removed with their costomisation of android/sense etc...
Also. The price plan I am on includes 250MB or data per month..
My old LG phone was on pay as you go on o2, with 500MB of data and i never really used over 100MB in a month (was connected to wifi whenever i was at home).
So i just wanted to know if 250MB should be enough for this phone also. I will do most app downloads etc via wifi, and really will only use 3g/mobile data whenever I am out of the house.
I wont have many apps/widgets set to auto update adn sync, at most it would be the HTC weather widget, my google account obviously (contacts, calendar and mail) and possibly just facebook/twitter set to maybe update once an hour (Ive disabled syncing on the news and stock accounts). I do most web browsing eithe ron my home computer, or via wifi on my phone. So at most will do only an occasional bit of web briwsing via the data connection at most. Should 250MB a month be plenty for this kind of scenario, or does HTC/Sense phones tend to use a lot more data than a stock plain android build?
ONe last thing. I want to set up a HTCsense account (the one that lets you locate th ephone, and remotely lock/wipe the device etc..) This apparenyl syncs some things on the phone, does anyone know what exactly this DOES sync? and how heavy data usage this service is?
Apart from that I must say i absolutely LOVE this handset, especialyl when coming frmo the LG GT540 which is a low end android device and only runs android 2.1
Thanx for the help in advance.
well if you use wifi at home all the time, i doubt you'd run out of 250 mb.
i'm on giffgaff, where i get unlimted internet, but i can only use 100mb a day.
i sometimes do heavy web browsing on 3g and i cannot manage to use my 100mb...
only of course if you watch youtube over 3g/download apps all the time!
(sorry cant help with the other questions!)

250Mb seems a little tight, I have 500Mb and tend to use 300-400 per month...although I suspect that my first months usage figures will be much higher than following months, as I've been downloading applications, reseting, syncing more than would be considered normal. Although I also stream radio which is quite greedy.
If you're strict with wifi usage over 3g you can probably control it and come in under 250Mb.
The best way to control your usage would be to install this http://www.appbrain.com/app/3g-watchdog/net.rgruet.android.g3watchdog which will monitor your usage and give projected usage figures.
I believe that Sense backs up your text messages along with other things as after I did a factory reset they re-appeared when I put my sense account details back into the phone.
20 gb amonth atleast or leave it be id say.

Does WiFi remain on in Mango update?

In pre-mango WP7 phones the WiFi would automatically turn off if your phone was on battery and screen was off. Is this stupid feature still present in Mango or can we make WiFi run ALL THE TIME on battery power?
Yes, it is. But it reconnect looooot faster.
Wow thank God I actually remembered to ask this before wasting money on a WP7. I don't care how fast it reconnects when it wont be connected in standby. Which means I wont be notified of emails, IMs, social network updates etc etc. Brilliant decision MS.
I think you're missing the point, it recconects every so often in standby to download messages/emails/notifications etc it just doesn't stay constantly on.

Don't know if this is a troll or just a lack of understanding.
You can determine in the options how often you want to to check your various email accounts. For example, one of my accounts I only need checked every hour, while another one I have check ever 15 minutes.
Social network updates are pushed to the phone in real time. I just got a FB notification and the comment had only happened 30 seconds prior.
IM works real time like text.
MS knows what they're doing.

I guess your machine will juiced out within 6 hours if your run WiFi all the time, which is simply no point. I don't think you will charge your phone every 4-5 hours or bring 5-6 batteries along with you.
Phone will turn on WiFi only when you are going to use the internet (while screen on) or when receiving the mails/messages as scheduled (while screen off), so you can still receive your mails and messages when it is idling.

It is still connected on WIFI. I use it since using Mango Dev.
WiFi is a little different in mango. If I am using last.fm and turn off the screen, WiFi stays on instead of switching to 3g. Nodo would turn off WiFi.
Few things to note:
Wifi will drop at screen lock if its not utilized. It will sign you out from your messenger and stop receiving emails etc.
If you have DATA (edge or 3G) that will keep the connection alive.
If you have plugged in your phone to a electric socket then and ONLY then the wifi will stay alive at screen lock.
Wifi drops in about 30sec at screen lock.
Android drops wifi at screenlock by default, BUT you have an option under settings to keep it alive. iPhone prior to iOS4 used to drop wifi at screenlock but not anymore and has no impact on battery life what so ever. 3G consumes more battery than Wifi.
wp7 mango is amazingly fast, but no OS is perfect. Probably in future it will be much better. For now if you are dependent on chat, email and other notification then wp7 and Data package work gr8.
All radios im the RTM are sinked, the system will use WiFi if available, and does real time updates. Aging WiFi, GPS, 3G, BT all on when not needed it is plain stupid and will kill your battery in no time. If my Android can last one whole day with Wifi on 24 hours(Galaxy S2) then WP7 should last longer. WiFi radio DOES NOT consume a lot of battery. Please get these retarded Android thoughts out of your mind. I'm not exactly aiming for the moon here. All I want is to get my push notifications AS THEY HAPPEN.
Someone mentioned in this thread that it periodically reconnects even with screen off to check for updates. Well if that's the case then I can forget about push notifications right? Because for those to work I'll need internet access on my phone constantly and not on periodic intervals.
I'm not trolling here. This was a genuine problem for me on my old WP7 device. The phone would disconnect WiFi when in standby. I have a perfectly fine working internet connection at home and I'm not about to sign up for an expensive data plan from my cellular network provider.
What I need to know is will I get IM push notifications, email push notifications
on WiFi when my screen has been off for a longer period of time? If I'm not then what exactly is the reason behind this? Does MS except everyone to have a data plan?

It's a smartphone so... yes. That's why smartphones are usually sold with data plans and that's why Microsoft implemented cloud services like Skydrive and Zune Pass.

Let me make this easy for you... WP7 is not for you and you should stick with your Galaxy S2 which is a great phone anyway.

Increased Data Usage

I recently came back from a two-month trip and started using my ATT sim card again. My Infuse is basically the same as when I left - Infused 2.23, no major changes.
All of a sudden my data usage has gone from an average of a couple of megabytes (at the most) a day to over ten. I only have a 200mb plan, so this is a problem.
I installed traffic monitor; unfortunately most of the data used falls under the heading of "System Traffic," which cannot be researched further. New build of Maps? Some rogue system program? I can't figure out how to find out what it is, and a google search wasn't particularly helpful.
Something is different, and I don't know what it is.
Anyone facing a similar situation or have any clues?
Start uninstalling apps and watch your usage to see which is the culprit.
Sent from my not-an-iPod
Thanks. That's a good idea, but it's all system apps, not apps I've installed. None of them are causing any trouble. I'm not even sure which are all the system apps...
Some apps I noted:
1. Quick Office Pro uses like about 20k on phone start up; not sure if it does it every time. There could be a few more apps that do this.
2. Google voice syncs itself
3. Push emails send info to server saying the link can be used
4. Maps new build could be a possible culprit (I keep mine frozen all the time now, and defreeze it only when needed)
I noticed this even on my wife's iPhone sometimes when she gets 65% usage sms (she has a 200 MB plan), and she's always on WiFi at home, and sometimes the data usage on AT&T site shows up to 20-30 MB per session. No way to track it. I tried taking it up with them, but that won't help since AT&T too does not track which app or what data it is.

Wifi tether treve mod w/root still shows tracked on MySprint site

I'm a long-time user of Wi-tether Treve mod on Android 4.x with no problems. I just switched to a rooted Sprint Galaxy S5 and have tried MANY tethering methods, all with varying degree of stability (it seems like every 15 minutes or so connection must be reset by re-running app). As a result, I was thinking of reverting to Android 4.x, but I logged into MySprint website and looked at my account under "Analyze my plan". I'd post photos of the graphs, but can't post image links as I'm a new member. Data usage shows it had been tracking/counting my hotspot usage on the S3 (as high as 12GB in June!) Now I'm not so sure what to do with my current phone. Is there any foolproof tethering solution that's under the radar on S5?

No. The native hotspot hack works at best for about 10-15 minutes before needing restarting and DOES not work on 3G. And likely is tracked as it uses the native hotspot.
In fact, this is mentioned on the link you posted... "I have had mixed reports about the tether packet counter being disabled, some people reported the hotspot goes down after 10-30 mins when you disable the packet counter."

Dude I have been using it for the entire time I have owned my S5 on Sprint. My Hotspot never drops, I can play hours of COD BO3 with my PS3 tethered to the phone, I use it as my main source of internet when out. I have never had any issues with this. If you use my modded version that I posted there, the packet counter gets removed when you reboot. Also, updating your profile, or doing anything like that will reset everything.
I just checked my data usage, and for the past 3 months it shows 0 gigs used of 3G/4G while on hotspot. There are some months that show hotspot data, I may have missed something on it, like resetting the packet counter.
Or, they may have implemented another method of detecting the usage. I know the "ItsOn" has some tether things in it.
The native hotspot definitely works in terms of getting you on the internet. And I never have been disconnected.
About your account showing hotspot usage, that could be a huge array of things that may or may not be possible to remove.
