Metal Detector app is cool! Does it really damage the speaker? - Nexus One Themes and Apps

I tried the Metal Detector app (available on Market). It's really cool and it works nicely on the Nexus One!
According to comments on the Market, the app uses the speaker. There was one comment, though, that says that it damaged his speaker and that it's doesn't play sound as loud as before. Is it true?

Its not using the speaker, its using the built in compass. I don't think HTC would build something into the phone that would damage it. but what do i know, lol/.

[Q] Why does sound only come out of one speaker?

It seems as though music and sound only comes out of one speaker on the device.
Whenever I play music, the right speaker (facing the device) seems to be louder. I "scientifically" tested this by covering one side and putting it close to my mouth to make wah-wah noises. The right one is definitely louder.
Is it a defective device? I noticed the tendancy as well with the iPhone 4. I assumed it was because of playing games. My hand would cover one of the speakers. It wouldn't cover the dominant one, though.
So.. What's up with one speaker?
Because there is only one speaker.

ohh haha
Things are beginning to make sense now.
Haha, thank you guys.
I hate how they made it look like a speaker, granted I like my phones somewhat symmetrical. They could of been cool and made the speaker setup stereo instead of monophonic. Or hell even a monophonic setup with two speakers, would make our music much louder.
The bottom and faux metal bezel is a design ripoff of the iphone 4 I believe apple is suing them over it. Its just a cheap speaker our turned down because the iphone has a loud speaker with same design.

I noticed it too but I assumed one was for the mic so thanks for the post cleared things up for me

Atrix 2 squeaky loudspeaker?

Hi all
My loudspeaker squeaks at volumes 50% and higher. Even when the phone is ringing with the default att tone.
Coming from many motophones, I can say loud tones have never been a problem, so I didn't expect it.
Am I the lucky one, or what?
Thank you
No problems here.
did you check your equalizer settings? might be related to that.

I disabled the equalizer altogether, IIRC. I'll check.
The sound it makes is like when a dust grain gets trapped somewhere in the speaker... plastic vibrating from the sound waves. Just the "blip" the phone does when turning up volume is enough to trigger it.
did you try to take the back cover off and then play a sound again? is it still there then? if so then you might have a damaged speaker membrane, if its ok without back cover then you might have a damaged back cover that vibrates while playing music etc. does this problem also occur while talking over speaker?

Yeah it's still there, only if I seal the speaker with the finger it goes away somewhat, but the high frequency whine is still there.
I guess there's no easy way to repair it, like, say, blowing some compressed air near it?
It can clearly be heard while in speakerphone, but it's not as bothering (due to spkrphone voice lacking in low freqs).
sounds like the speaker membrane is whether damaged or dirt or whatever is under the speaker cover. i would advise to have it checked. or exchange the phone. doing it yourself with compressed air is one thing but you might damage it more and they might then refuse to exchange or fix it under guarantee terms. hope this helps.

Damn, can't return it
Guess I have to put up with it
well try and have it checked in a repair shop. maybe its really just something underneath the speaker case. they should have the right tools : -)

I disabled the sound effects (which btw I had left turned on for the external speaker) and the squeaking is reduced to bearable levels, at least for the ringtone. Thanks for the tip.
no problem.

rear speaker problem

i noticed lately that when i play songs or w/e in the rear speaker while full volume, the quality is just horrible and its very dirty sound.
could it be that the speaker got ruin from a drop? or could it be that its a software problem? or maybe this speaker is just like this while full volume?
thanks for the help.
no one have problem with the phone speaker?
Did you already try this on cm9 with some dsp speaker tweaks?
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
i yet started to play with rooms root and all those things.
right now im fully stock 2.21 untouched
I had this and found that the holes for the speaker on the bottom cover had been plugged. Cleaned them out and it has the same as factory sound again.
I'm curious what horrible means when talking about a tiny phone speaker. It's not really intended as a home theater system, simply a way to hear the narrow range of the human voice hands free. You probably should be using a dock or headphones.
it could be dirty or that it has gotten some water in it and has a short. i see this on a lot of iphones and samsungs in my line of work

How to Improve the sound quality of bundles earphones

Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
I posted this in a reply but I believe this mod should have it own thread as lots of xperia z owners Still have the xperia z bundled earphones.
I recently decided to take out/rip out the white filters in the bundled xperia z earphones.
I ussualy don't ever do this on my headphones but due to the bundled earphones sounding alot worse than the original Sony ex300 even though they share the same name and are supposed to be the same. So I decided to compare thefilters on the earphones, and guess what?
the bundled earphones have really bad and dense filters. Compared to the light and spongy filter on the original ex300, these looked like a sound suppressing dense piece of tissue\paper.
after debating for a mere second, i decided to take them out with a needle.
Sound improved quite a bit on the earphones now, louder and a better soundstage with better bass, clarity and sound imaging.
Also not as harsh sounding as before, which is odd usually taking out filters has the opposite effect.
Iam sure with burn in they would improve even further, just like most Sony dynamic driver earphones.
I am listening to them now and iam really enjoying them now, adequate and good enough to use as everyday xperia z earphones. And miles better than any other bundled set.
Please try and report back.

Would like to see this too.
Incredible, sounds louder, clearer and the bass got a boost even...
Tip to those who want to do it: Just use scissors or anything sharp (Don't forget to remove the Silicon cups first of course), gently poke a hole in the white filter and just remove it. It's not a risky process. After you remove it there's just a hole - I'm guessing the drivers themselves are deeper inside, so unless you use something long and do it violently - It's unlikely you'll damage the set.
Sorry guys.. but i don't see anything white in my earphones.
I have only the black gum in contact with my ear and if i pull it away there's only a hole. Where are supposed to be this white things you are talking about?
Maybe my earphones came without it? In fact i really appreciated their sound!
How about dirt entering the hole left by removing the white thingy? Wouldn't it damage the phone?
Edit: Sorry, I meant the earphones.

Damage the phone??
You clean the EARPHONE Silicone tips as usual, and it shouldn't damage the EARPHONES
This is where the white paper filter used to be, and a pic with the silicone tip on afterwards

well.. i didn't have anything there.. don't know if it's strange
Think this thread deserves a bump as it really does make a big difference to listening enjoyment using the stock headphones.
I did it too, and the sound improved indeed! Thanks for the tip!
Jep did it also. Slight improvement.
But the sound quality wasn't bad anyways
What about dust problem? These white paper pads meant to hold dust and small particles away from earphone inner section. This could make the sound even worse than in stock condition if lots of sh*t is in there. Sadly i removed one pad first to test the sound, before thinking on implications. There is slightly better sound, but stock earphones are also ok.
You can use canned air to clean them out every month or so. Just make sure you keep the can a good distance away so you don't damage the speaker.
Thanks for the tip!!
afraid of the dust entering the earphone
if i remove the filters and go to the service station, can i get some good filters instead, ones, that dont block the sound much??

Cool little accessory: Pressy - the Almighty Android Button!

If you haven't heard about it yet, the Pressy is a KickStarter project that adds a button to the head phone jack that can be "programmed" to preform actions. IMHO A simple idea but should be very useful. I don't use my headphone jack, I'm bluetooth all the way so I've invested.
The only problem that I'll have to over come is when I use the "refurbished" NeoHybrid it's going to be hard to press the button. Will have to find a way to fill the hole. Maybe a cut down pencil eraser head? :silly:

Looks neat. I'm skeptical how it will affect battery life. I imagine it acts as a microphone, and the service listens for a "click" or other noise. Simple concept, but I imagine "listening" 24/7 can't be easy on the battery.
I believe the idea behind the project is to work like our earplugs controller, by expecting a click that I imagine that works like a breaker. So it won't drain as much battery, what concerns me is the fact that the phone will think it's has headphones connected, therefore media sounds won't play. Don't know how they will bypass that, maybe with their software. But I think it's a really good idea to add an extra button to our phones.
The phone only knows it has headphones connected because of the resistance to the current going through it. Like a signal. Since the only time the current is being closed is when you're pressing the button, I wouldn't imagine it draining any battery or putting your phone in headphone mode.

Have to admit didn't think about battery use, but I would think that the majority of the power draw for the head jack would be from the audio app itself and the fact that audio is being played through the jack. So if they have design the app correctly I would think the power draw would be minimal.

It addresses this issue in the FAQs on the link posted in the OP.
All in all, this looks like a decent idea as long as it fits into cases like they claim it does. Cases like the OBEX and others have to seal tight to keep the water out so it will be interesting to see how it works with cases like that.
This looks good, I asked them a question
"I have a question, will pressy work if you keep your phone password protected, either via a PIN # or a Pattern Lock?
Can you set the app to Unlock the phone, perform the action, then relock the phone?
Or does it run the app in the background despite the phone being password protected?
Please advise, Thank you"
Reply:
You can assign Pressy to work even when your device is locked with a PIN, and re-lock automatically after using that assigned function.
You'll have the option to choose either way.
Backed this up on Kickstarter a few weeks back. Cant wait for my PRESSY!!
Backed this as well, waiting patiently.
I would use it to fix the one button that oems have forgotten about the camera. Would also make for a great physical shutter button too.
