I tried to search for a resolution to this problem, I don't think it is uncommon, but didn't find any clear answer.
When you change MUI locale (in my case from 409 to 408 - Greek), you loose various system notifications (more importantly SMS/MMS/voicemail).
Is there any real way to fix this?
I tried to find related keys with _0409 in the registry but couldn't find any.
I tried to find related files in \Windows, also no luck (I did find localized HTML documents though).
Does anybody know the answer? Do I need extra files? Which?
OK I reply to myself.
The solution is INDEED the .0409.html files in \Windows.
I copied all of them, discarded the irrelevant ones (you are only interested in the "single message line" type ones), translated them, renamed to .0408 (btw I kept the .0409 in of course!) and voila IT WORKS.
Here is the Greek version.
(BTW XDA should allow for 7z... the 8Kb ZIP was just 2KB in 7z form)
The rest just do what I did - or as a quick solution, duplicate all the .0409 files to your codepage without translation.
hi
Ive rename all to my language, copy to windows and still nothing
Also I check all settings for sound¬ification and looks ok. I checked the whole list.
Also Ive set system & ring volume for max.
Any resolution...
I don't know the intricacies of different models and different ROMs.
It's possible you use a build that doesn't look other MUI.

anyone know a good resource for ppc/pda fonts please.pref graffitti style
thanks
PPC uses exactly the same font format as desktop windows, so you can copy any font in your c:\windows\fonts folder to \windows (on the PPC) and it will work (after soft reset).
Also any sites with fonts for windows will do. (Sorry, don't know any myself)
cheers mate,i hadnt realised they were the same
thanks

Thanks for that link - I use the Tempus Sans itc font myself on my device and it works well as a graffiti font.
Hitting error!
Happy new year everyone.
I just started to use Dopod 838 Pro about 3 weeks ago, and I have this problem :
1.) I like to use this font - Times New Roman, and when I tried to copy ALL the four TTF files (TIMES / TIMESI / TIMESBD / TIMESBI) from my notebook /Windows/Fonts folder to PDA's /Windows/Fonts, I hit error when come to Sync process :
Cannot copy 'TIMESI.TTF'. Make sure your mobile device has sufficient memory, that the file is not set as read-only, and that you have permission to copy this file type.
Why am I hitting this error (for ALL the four TTF files)? However, I'm still able to use the fonts (normal / italic / bold / bold+italic). Is there anyway to get rid of this error? Is there any step I have missed out for copying true type fonts from computer to PDA? Anyone out there care to help? Thank you very much in advance.
Stupid question but did you actually check the size?
On systems with many locales or Asian fonts one TTF file can reach 2MB.
It is possible that you are running out of storage memory.
Also, if the files already exist on your device you would not be able to copy over them.
I've already checked on the font size when the errors were prompted (as follow) :
TIMES - 399K
TIMESBD - 389K
TIMESBI - 234K
TIMESI - 242K
I've copied all those four files into \Windows\Fonts, and I'm able to use the fonts in the program, ie. to change it in Excel files. I have more than enough space in my device : Storage Free (25.05 MB) & Program Free (average 25MB most of the time). But I just don't understand this error was hit!?
Before I copied the TTF files into my device, I'm very sure there was no such fonts pre-loaded, so it couldn't be duplication issue.
I'm really scratching my head these days to find out the solution!

It may be activesync thats kicking up the error - copy the fonts directly to storage card via a card reader or wm5torage and copy fonts to windows\fonts using total commander or gsfinder file explorers.
This is probabley another stupid question but once you've added new fonts into a ppc where do you change the default font??
I'm using a tytn and can't find anywhere other than a spb diary setting.

I didn't change the default font after I've copied to my device \Windows\fonts.

I have just tried your method (deleted the fonts before I re-copied directly without using sync options), but still hitting the stupid error!!
I gave up! I just leave the error there, it shown 4 Unresolved Items. But I still managed to use the fonts when editing my files in the device. And no problem also for me to continue sync the rest.
Just hope there's a solution one fine day!

There are numerous references to the tahoma font in the registry it would be a bit laborious to change all the references but possible using search in phm regedit look for tahoma. make sure you know what your doing and have a backup of your registry and device.
Or you could overwrite tahoma.ttf and the bold version with a font renamed to tahoma.ttf - i tried it in the past and it worked.
There is an app pocket tweak but it only changes some of the default fonts.
Thanks anyway, everyone!
Hope there is a solution one fine day, any other advice/guides would be very much appreciated.

Sorry where did you delete the fonts from and did you manage to get the fonts onto the storage card? You cant overwrite or delete the fonts in the windows\fonts directory on the device whithout renaming i.e font.tt instead of font.ttf and resetting and then delete or add the new font. Hope that helps

Well... I can't really remember how I deleted the fonts...
I did hit an error when trying to delete the fonts inside my PDA \Windows\Fonts, so what I did was CUT the four files from the \Windows\Fonts to \My Documents and deleted them from the \My Documents folder.
After removing the TTF files, I changed the Sync options to exclude FILES from being sync. Then I sent ALL the four files to my PDA directly via Bluebooth. At first I thought I could fool around with the ActiveSync, but after sending the files (via BT) which eventually stored into PDA's \My Documents folder as well, I CUT the files and pasted them into \Windows\Fonts. There wasn't any error before I resumed the FILES sync option, unfortunately... after I have revert the FILES sync option, the error re-occured again.
Nevertheless, as I've mentioned, I still able to use the TIMES fonts for my Excel files. I'm trying to browse through MSDN Library website ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnanchor/html/WinMobile_TechArticles.asp )to find out the solution.
Cheers.
I have an edited htchomesettings.xml that i want to put on my jade.
Everytime i try to drag 'n drop this file into my windows folder, i get the 'acced denied, be sure the file isn't read-only, in use or that you have enough space left'-error.
When looking at the file's properties (with Resco or total commander) it seems to be fixed in the Rom and i think that's the reason i can't overwrite it.
I already googled it and found some topics concerning this problem, and generally they all give the same advice:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2736263&postcount=500
the problem is, i already used both programs, and apparently it does not seem to work, or i'm doing it wrong or i'm overlooking something...
So, can anyony tell me how to overwrite this file with total commander or resco, if this is possible.
Many thanks, and sorry if this is a stupid question, i searched the web for about 3 hours before asking you guys .
It's a little easier than that. The only thing you need to do is make sure that the plugin is not running. In other words, deactivate the plugin in the Settings menu. Then, do a soft reset, just to make sure that the system has stopped using it. Then you can copy and paste with any program that you like. I have found that using a PC (via ActiveSync) works best. Good luck!!
Thanks for the quick reply thunder.
Unfortunately, it did not work out. I deactivated TouchFlo already (and did the reset). And still it gives me the same error.
"Cannot copy HtcHomeSettings. Make sure your device has sufficient memory, that the file is not set as read-only, and that you have permission to copy this file type"
This time I simply used Active sync as you told me.
Again, does it have something to do with the fact that this file is hardcoded on the rom?

Unfortunately, if it is built into the rom, you will probably have a hard time copying over it. Have you tried to edit the file directly on the phone? I believe that there are a few xml editors for ppc floating out there, you could try that. Also, is there anything in particular that you want to do that requires you to modify the xml? Reason I am asking is because you could use M2D Customizer if you are only looking into modifying some settings. Hope this helps...
Allright, found out how to overwrite it!
Made a .m2dct file containing my preferred theme and settings, then i edited the included HtcHomeSettings.xml file.
Then i used the M2D customizer to load the .2mdct file, and that worked perfectly.
Thanks for the hint, Thunder!
Hey XDA,
I recently used the start text modifier on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426264&page=1
I read it and it seemed to suggest if I rename the included shellres.dll.040C.mui to shellres.dll.0409.mui it would work on my device.
It ended up changing my softkey menus & start menu to French. I wouldn't have a huge problem with that, as I can use Google translate & I know French.
But all my startup programs were lost. With my shortcuts all on WAD2, and access to Settings & Programs on QuickMenu, I couldn't access anything.
A hard reset has done the job, but its still not the greatest solution...
Would anyone know if the shellres file deleted startup entries, or why my start menu did not have settings & programs (just recent)?

Hi,
The problem is very clear : the manual and explanation it the 'Icon-changer' are WRONG. You just can't change the language to any other by changing some reference in the name of a given *.dll... You need to have the correct *.dll for YOUR language. Hence it's not working. Your shortcuts etc. did not disappear, they just didn't have any reference INSIDE the *.dll, so no way to show up.
Bad explanation doesn't mean it's not working. If you like to play around, you first backup your *.dll and the start hexing a copy of that backup. If it's not working as you should expect, you can always use TotalCommander to put back your backup.
Dirk
Ah, thanks sir.
I am relatively new to this, so thanks for giving me some basics.
So I would need to do some kind of hardcore cracking open of the dll, which is out-of-the-question for a newb.

There's nothing hardcore in it Just copy the *.dll you want to change to your PC. Make a backup-copy of it, and open that copy in an HEX editor like XVI32 or such... hack the needed bits and save the file.
Then you copy that hacked file back to your device. Best is to copy it to another place as the original, cos WM won't let you overwrite like that. Therefor you'll need to use TotalCommander.
If it's not acting as you expected, you can replace the hacked *.dll with the original backup the same way.
Dirk
Thanks!
Thanks for the quick responses sir.
I will look into your suggestions. Thanks heaps!
While I need to change the language parts of the *.dll from the other thread, will this also allow shortcuts to show up? Or is it better to edit my current *.dll to change the text that way?

Nope, you'll need to use YOUR *.dll... That's the only one that is integrated in your OS, and has all the connections to your shortcuts.

hi there i've installed some games onto my HD2 (uno, FM, tonyhawks) and want to locate them in the games folder not in the main windows area. can anyone help me do this?
open file explorer. browse to windows/startmenu/programs.....look for ur games shortcuts......cut..... nd paste in windows/startmenu/programs/games. done
You're not done at all.
OK, it will move the shortcut to the correct folder, but the icon won't follow. It's defined in the registry ([HKLM\Security\Shell\Startinfo\Start] then the folder name, then the shortcut name, string value "Icon").
People making CABs should be a bit less lousy and direct shortcuts to the correct folder, same for the acompanying icon.
Actually, some people put icon definitions into several registry keys, so they will "follow" the shortcut if you move it. It's actually a satisfying alternative, if you consider it gives the user the ability to put the shortcut wherever he wants (including copying it to several locations) without losing the icon.
But yes, having shortcuts piling up into the Start Menu's first level, or even worse, placing them into dummy folders with a fixed name (sometimes in a foreign language), is pig work, and I saw even worse (yes, it's possible !) : shortcuts landing to a foreign language "Programs" or even "Start menu" folder, so actually not even displaying in the Start Menu !
When you create (or modify) a CAB file, you should heavily use aliases in order to let Windows Mobile translate them to the actual names during installation.
For instance, if you wanted to direct a shortcut to the "Games" folder, whatever its actual name in your own language is, you should NOT put it into "\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Games" (neither into "%StartMenu_Programs%\Games", though it's still better like that), but you should actually use "%StartMenu_Programs_Games%", which will put the shortcut in the exact correct location.
You can do the same for the program's location itself. For instance, %ProgramFiles_Games% will direct it to the correct folder, according to your system's language, and will even do so, either you choose to install it on the internal memory, or on the SD card.
You can use these aliases inside registry values, too.
Unfortunately, this process may sometimes do it "too much".
It's the case on cooked ROMs, where the author may retain WWE names for some folders and translate others, sometimes using his own syntax. Since the CAB will always translate using the official way, it may still land in an incorrect location...
The ony way to be sure you'll obtain the wanted result, anyway, is to get some CAB editor program and peek inside before copying them to the pocket PC and installing them... And maybe, fix them before using them.
It will be handy each time you'll need to reinstal it, so don't mind inspecting and fixing the CABs you find : it's always better than crashing your system because something wrong or inadequate to your setup was put inside.
One classic case is TouchFlo / Sense tabs, for instance.
Unfortunately, they're all defined inside a unique XML Manila file, so you actually can't just ADD a tab : in fact, this notion does not even exist ; all you can do is overwrite your whole tabs list with another complete one, and pray that you'll end up with the same list, plus the new one... Would you bet your life on that ? I won't.
In real life, you really can NEVER trust a CAB intended to add a tab to your existing setup, as the author most probably don't have the same tabs as you have. In the best case, you'll just loose some tabs (they'll just disappear, even in the tabs list from the settings, and you won't get them back) : the programs and files are still there, but their definition file will have been replaced by the new one. And in the worst case, it will add a definition for a tab whose programs and files are not previously installed on your phone - and you'll crash it once and for all.
That's the reason why now, I never give a tab CAB containing any tabs definitions. I only provide all but the tabs list, and provide separate CABs for all the possible tabs combinations - and you have to choose and use the good one. Or use Maltwater's SenseUtil program to setup your tabs. The good news is my method will setup all the tabs in perfect order as soon as you've soft resetted the device, since my CABs contain the XML file, plus all the registry keys, plus it resets ManiFull.xml.
So, people, whatever I said about good CABs putting the shortcuts where they should... OK, you may be lucky... But the right behaviour should always be to look inside CABs before trying them. You can trust me !
i'm new coming nice to know all

hi,
where can i find the user dictionary which every time i input new words i think it will automatically save somewhere. Which every time i input again the word it will suggest automatically.. pls help me.
thanks you im newbie..
\Windows\dyncompdict.dat
You will have to copy it to your PC as a text file, edit it and put it back.
their is no dyncompdict.dat file in windows.
i also cannot find the dyncompdict.dat file in windows..
thanks for helping me.
Newbie
I have not used a windows mobile phone.
only leran here.
Update.
That was then, this is now...........
Apparently from WM 6.0 onwards it is now stored in compimeh.NNNN.dat in the \Windows directory, where NNNN is a language code page 0409 is US English. If you guys are running 6.0 onwards, that's why you don't see the files mentioned above.
Here's the bad news. The file is in some binary format, so a text editor is useless. All you can do is clear it from Control Panel -> Input -> Word Completion(Tab) and hit the "Clear Stored Entries" Button.
There's an archive thread about this at :-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-317696.html
yes im using wm6.1 which mean i cannot access the the said file.
is there any other way access the file?or 3rd party software that i can convert so i can edit my stored word? or make my own dictionary so that input my favorite words or whatever?
tnx,
Apparently there is a program in the windows directory of HTC Touch and Touch HD devices called et9mywords.exe, that can edit it.
You will have to use "Show all files" to find in File Explorer.
Can't be of any more help here, I've currently got a MWg Zinc II, which doesn't have it.
i got it..thank you very much..
