Touch Pro 2 stealth tethering through wifi...

Recently I downloaded the Tom Codon cab for the wifi router to my phone. The router works great, but I'm wondering if i need to change any registry settings so that Sprint doesn't recongnize that I'm using the wifi router. I know there are registry tweaks for using the phone as a modem through the usb cable, but will Sprint be able to see that im using the Wifi from Tom Codon?

i came here to ask this exact question so please if anybody knows the answer, please share.

I am guessing that if you have stealth tethering, it works on the WiFi router too. This is just a guess, but...
#1: WiFi Router asks if you want to use "My Connection" or "Phone as Modem" when you launch it. I am guessing the "My Connection" is probably stealth.
#2: Tethering doesn't even work on Sprint phones (at least not the Touch Pro 2) anymore unless you have the stealth tethering enabled. It's not like Sprint is charging extra for tethering, they just flat out killed it. So if it works at all, I'm guessing it's in stealth mode.
Like I said, I don't work for Sprint so I don't really have any way to know for sure, but it seems pretty likely to me. If anyone knows for sure though, I would love to know the real deal.

On the telus systems I have a registry crack and a ICS (internet connection sharing) installed on my phone. When I plug it in, i let the phone automatically activate activesync, then turn on ICS. ICS disables activesync and then allows you to connect to your network. Once connected the phone and the computer are tethered and the phone provider can't tell.
I played 99meg worth of sirius satalite radio on my pc using my phone as my modem. Worked great.

[Q] Sharing my Laptop wifi with Gtab

For some reason, I'm having the hardest time being able to share the WiFi connection my laptop gets with my Gtab.
On my college campus, wifi signal strength is horrible. For my laptop, I have an external 2000mw with a 7db high gain antennae attached. Currently, I use the software Connectify to turn my laptop connection into a hotspot, then connect to the hotspot via my Gtab.
Now, when it works it works great. But it seems like everytime I re-connect my tab, itll show it connected (full bars) but I get no internet. The only work around Ive found this is to forget the connection, and re-do my setup through Connectify (half the time seems like even this doesn't work).
The problem could very well be Connectify which is why I'm posting this.
Anyone know how to either configure a network connection in Win7 x64 Ultimate to be a hotspot? Or know of software/app that does it (besides Connectify and Virtual Router..something like that) to where I just set it up once, and have no further issues after?
Again, I dont know if this is my ROM or Connectify (leaning towards Connectify since Ive had this issue with every ROM I've tried thus far.
I apologize if there is already info. on this in the forum, but I couldnt find it.

As far as I know, Connectify is the only sw that can give you an infrastructure htospot for Win7 x64. I use it and it works. have you upgraded to the newest 2.2 release. Fixed a number f the kind of issues you mention. One cavaet: the new stuff seems to interfere with creating VPN connections on the laptop,

Yeah I'm starting to notice that. I stumbled on a guide using Windows 7 feature "netsh" which can enable a hotspot using your existing wifi connection, and I keep getting errors when enabling certain services required by this. Gonna try this again with Connectify off. So you dont have any issues with Connectify as far as connecting to your created hotspot like the ones I described? What do you have your settings set to in your Wireless settings area on your tab? What ROM are you using?
I have Connectify set to Autorun on my laptop, but even then I have yet to boot into Windows, turn on my tab, and have my tab just connect to my hotspot. Everytime I have to re-do the Setup Wizard, along with forget the connection on my tab and log back into that. Even then, that works maybe half the time.

So apparently, the "netsh" feature is only useful if you are connected through a LAN, then you share that connection via a wifi connection on the same pc. This defeats the purpose in my eyes, unless I missed something here.
Has anyone been able to use this Windows 7 feature with just a wifi connection and no LAN?

[Q] Any tether options for non-rooted WiFi Xoom?

I'm running a WiFi Xoom that has not been rooted, and I wanted to see if there are any tethering options that don't require rooting. I'm not opposed to using a UWB cable if need be, although of course it would be nice not to if possible.
For now, my phone is a Verizon Touch Pro 2. My TP2 is unlocked and running Energy ROM, and I also have WMWiFiRouter installed. In the next few months I will likely upgrade to an Android-based phone, but for now I'm stuck with the TP2.
Is there any way to make this work? Also, I'm not necessarily opposed to rooting it. For whatever reason I was trying to avoid doing that, but I have to get this thing working with me cel.

I don't have mine rooted, and I have a HTC Hero (sprint) until the Nexus S 4G drops next Sunday.
I have WiFi tether, and use Bluetooth to connect and it works well for when I just wand to browse the internet/ CNN and check on work stuff.

Just to make sure I'm looking at the right program, is that Barnacle Wifi Tether? The one I had previously read about was Wireless Tether for Root Users, which is what stopped me in my tracks.
EDIT: I just looked at Barnacle Wifi Tether and it says root access is required... what program are you using?

Touch Pro 2 is a Windows Phone, not an Android phone, unless he has Android on it. But I don't keep up with TP2 development, so I don't know if it has an Android Port.
I know there are WM tethering options, but am not sure of Ad-Hoc vs Infrastructure

Correct, the TP2 is Windows Mobile (6.5.x). It is unlocked, and I have a couple different internet sharing programs on it (HTC's version, and WMWiFi Router). They both work perfect when I tether my laptop to the TP2.
As far as I can tell, both of these internet sharing options on the TP2 do so in Ad-Hoc mode, NOT infrastructure mode, which is where my issue is. I haven't been able to find any program that can share in infrastructure mode, though I don't even know if that's possible.
I have tried the bluetooth sharing once before as I know the cell phone (allegedly) has the capability, but I couldn't get it to work. Wasn't sure if the problem was on the phone's end or the Xoom's end. I'll try these steps during lunch and see if I can get it to work.

Okay, tried the steps you gave me and here's exactly what happens:
I made both devices discoverable and paired them successfully. Went into the Bluetooth manager on the TP2 and tried to create a Private Network. I chose the Xoom, it said 'Checking Services' for a little while, and then said 'Failed to establish Private Network connection to remote device as it supports only Network Access Point (NAP) mode.
There's also a different option for "Share Internet Connection". I again chose the Xoom and got the exact same message.
Where is the disconnect here? Does my TP2 not support the right protocol, or is there something at fault on the Xoom's end? I tried Bluetooth Settings on the Xoom, and then I tapped the wrench icon, but all I can do in there is rename or unpair. It also says paired but not connected. I've never been able to get it to say anything other than that, also.
One more last part... when my TP2 examines the Xoom, the only available services that it can find are 'Access Internet through remote device'. So, of course the one thing that appears to be able to work is the exact opposite.
As always, any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Xoom supports the Bluetooth PAN profile as a user, but it seems like your TP2 isn't seeing that. Is there any way you can setup your TP2 to act as a Bluetooth Network Access Point awaiting incoming connections? This is the way a lot of us tether or Xoom's to OG Droids, where we start up Wireless Tether on the Droid, THEN pair, then the Xoom shows a Tether option in the Bluetooth settings.
I have a TP1 running MightyROM laying around somewhere, I can mess with it later tonight if you haven't got a solution by then.
EDIT: Another option is rooting your Xoom and trying the Adhoc WiFi hack. Not everyone is having great success with it, though.

I've gone through every single menu on here and I can't find any other way to do this in Bluetooth other than the way I'm doing it. It just might be how this works. I haven't upgraded ROM's on the TP2 in a very long time. I'm probably running about a 6 month old version of Energy ROM.
I should probably just break down and root the damn thing... I suppose that would solve it.
If you've absolutely nothing else to do tonight and want to try it out, I really would appreciate it! If I have some major breakthrough between now and then, I'll reply. Thanks!

yeah im having problems with this too im using an eris (same as the hero) but for some reason my phone reboots when its connected to my xoom, and i have tried just about every rom for the eris and have no clue what it is.

I caught a break and found my Touch Pro. Forgot that I reflashed it to stock (it's a Sprint TP which I was running on Verizon), so I won't be able to easily get it on the mobile network for thorough testing.
I did manage to get my Xoom to pair with the device, and the Tethering option shows up on the Xoom; however, I can't get Internet Sharing started up on my TP without being on the mobile network (WiFi alone isn't helping). When I do tap the Tethering option on the Xoom, it attempts to connect, then reverts to its untethered state without an error message (been there before, had to comb through hcidump to figure out what was going on).
Since it seems I *almost* got there, I'm going to ask you to try out a verbose (not to be insulting, but just to cover the bases), step-by-step procedure, and to let me know your feedback. Note that I'm running stock WinMo 6.1, so locations and dialogs may be different than what I describe. Please give this a shot:
Delete all pairing entries from both TP2 and Xoom
TP2: Start | Settings | Connections | Bluetooth | Mode
TP2: Check "Make this device visible to other devices"
TP2: Tap Ok | Tap "X" (Close Settings)
TP2: Start | Programs | Internet Sharing
TP2: Under "PC Connection:", select "Bluetooth PAN"
TP2: Tap "Connect"
If the connection succeeds, then you can proceed to the following. If not, some searching may yield some registry keys or other hacks to make this work. Note also that there may be an extra dialog or two to get Internet Sharing completely setup, as I was unable to get that far.

XOOM: Settings | Wireless & networks | Bluetooth settings | Tap "Find nearby devices"
XOOM: After a few seconds, your TP2 should appear (my TP showed up as "Pocket_PC"); tap it to pair
XOOM: On the "Bluetooth pairing request" dialog, enter "1234" (without the quotes)
TP2: A "Bluetooth" dialog should pop up asking if you want to connect; tap "Yes"
TP2: On the "Enter Passcode" dialog, enter "1234" (without the quotes) and tap "Next"
TP2: A "Device Added" dialog should appear; tap "Done" (pairing is complete)
XOOM: Tap the wrench icon next to your TP2 under "Paired devices"
XOOM: Tap the "Tethering" option under "Profiles" to enable tethering
Cross your fingers, pray, perform incantations, etc...

I've tethered my unrooted Wifi Xoom to my Omnia II (Verizon WinMo 6.5) using WMWifirouter via the Bluetooth connection. I paired them once, fired up the WMWifiRouter BT connection and the Xoom connected right to it. The BT connection actually isn't too bad, not the fastest but gets the job done.
Let me know if I can help, don't have my Xoom with me here at work to confirm any settings but can follow up this weekend.

stachre: I didn't even have the BT PAN as an option using that method. Have a feeling it's a phone issue from the brief reading I've done. Apparently TP2's don't have a Microsoft BT stack, they have a Widcomm stack. Supposedly it doesn't play nicely with others.
stachre and 2ksilverbullet: I have never been able to get WMWiFiRouter to even try to use the Cellular to BT connection. I finally read somewhere that people were able to make an older version work. I downloaded and installed it, and it at least now lets me try and use it, although it won't work. Still can't get the Internet Sharing to show a BT option. All of the same still applies from before: same error messages when trying to establish a PAN connection, Xoom still doesn't display a tether option, nothign has changed.
I really appreciate all your attempts to help out. Right now I'm just feeling like it's not worth any more effort from anyone, espcially others. Thanks again for everything. If for some reason you're absolutely determined to try and figure this out, please feel free. Otherwise, I'm inclined to throw in the towel and just wait until I upgrade to a new phone very soon.

I use my iphone with built-in tether no additional software on either

I tether my non-root zoom wifi version with my dell streak running android 2.2.2 on Tmobile edge, speed is absolutely acceptable for surfing web. Set up for tether is pretty easy.

How to connect Android to the internet via USB - New Reverse tether app

This is a new app, that allows you to reverse tether your android (access your computer's connection via usb).
It doesn't require any extra software, or windows installations, or ADB/debugging, or tech savviness, and your connection looks like 3G so that all your apps work seamlessly including Market, Downloads and Talk. it requires a rooted device.
As you can see the process is very simple and takes only a few seconds... the app is called Reverse Tether and it's on the android market now.

I can't see why not. Just use the wizard that is integrated in the app to help you set it up. The best way to find out really is to try it yourself, worst case senario you uninstall it.

I'm trying to do this on a droid x with the Apex ROM. When I start the app, it says "Failed to start Tethering. Make sure this device supports or allows Tethering. Otherwise, you won't be able to use this app.
There's not a whole lot of instructions on how to do a 'usb reverse tether' out there with this app. I have my connection set to "PC Mode" and I'm running on osx. I have to imagine that there's something special that needs to be done on the PC end that the instructions just aren't saying...

You don't need any instructions. It's just one button you click it and it's supposed to connect you.
Maybe it's because you have your connection set to "PC MODE"??? Dunno.
On some phones like mine, when it's set to PC mode you can't do anything else with it. So try to turn off PC mode, if you can't then set it to debugging, that will turn off for sure.
You can also test if tethering works on your device by going to settings > wireless and network - and enabling Tethering yourself.

Just curious as to why you would need this?
The phone has WiFi and/or the network.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to try this. I guess I just have a hard time believing that you just plug the phone in the computer and it automagically works. I would imagine you would have to bridge usb0 or do something.
I tried to enable the 'tether' mode and the computer sees usb0, but that's about as far as I get with it.
As for why I'm doing it... I don't want to be mean, rude, or start anything, but because I have to. I get annoyed because most of the 'reverse tether' threads ask 'why' and 'why not just use wifi', instead of posting something useful. Here's the reason.
When I'm at work, I'm in the middle of nowhere. I get no cell signal, even if trying to use a wilson repeater. I also get no wifi, since the AP's are far away from me. I can't install my own AP because of policies, so what other option do I have? Either a BT PAN or a USB reverse tether. I'm kinda pissed about it and why Verizon won't install anything to get a signal. I'm paying 90 bucks a month and can't use my phone for 8 hours a day.

Once you enable tether, keep it on and try running the app again while it's on. Maybe that will work.
Also, sorry, yes there's a guide in the app that helps you set up your computer, but it's just sharing, a one time thing.. you don't need to bridge anything. But to get there you need to get tether option working.

Not everyone have an unlimited mobile data plan. And if you have a limited plan, they're usually very expensive, so when you're at home or at work or at school why not spare your bytes and money?
And not everyone have access to WIFI or even need WIFI, it's silly to setup a WIFI network just for your phone. Besides, USB is musch faster, and more secure.
And since you're already connected to USB to recharge or sync, why not also have unlimited super fast internet for free?

I'm wondering, has anybody got this working on a droid x with the Apex rom? I've just about tried everything. USB Tethering loads drivers in Windows and works fine. The reverse tethering app still says the same error message. I'm starting to wonder if it's not compatible with the dx.

Hey wiz561, have you by any chance tried the most recent version? It seems like your issue have been fixed according to What's New.
If you don't have access to update, you can dowload the Reverse Tether APK file from the developer's website.

Not compatible with the Transformer Prime. Though I'd instantly donate if it would allow dongles to work.
My question earlier was referring to the compatibility of this app with 3G/4G dongles. I ask because aren't dongles required to connect first via their dashboard/software before sharing the internet via USB? If that's the case, how then would this app reverse tether the dongle's connection? Is there a settings page for these things?

I wonder if it doesn't work for some of us because we have a LAN connection instead a wifi router or ethernet cable connection as the app says...

bad.bad.bad, when you connect your dongle, aren't you supposed to see its own Network Adapter in your Network Connections? I mean that's how Windows works. So just follow the same steps but share that network adapter instead.
Same goes for Netagirl, an ethernet connection is a LAN connection. So whichever network adapter connects you to the internet, share it with your phone's network that is created by the app.

Yeah, I think I made a mistake, my connection from my pc to my external modem, is not via ethernet but USB, so I don't know if that affects. And yes, I do exactly what you said and the app says that I have to respect trial's limitation, at every single hour I'd try =/

[Q] Can we use P920(H) as a modem for a 3G router?

Hello all. I've just purchased a 3G/WAN WI-FI router (TP-Link model TL-MR3420 - link to manufacturer's page). It has an USB port to connect a 3G/4G modem. I tried to connect my P920H (V28b stock ICS - XBSA large partitions) but the router doesn't recognise it. I tried to use an older 3G phone (Sony Ericsson W980) and it works like a charm. In both cases I configured the phones to USB tether with their own configuration options.
Anyone managed to make this work? I believe the router lacks a driver, but I've found no driver for any phone on the manufacturer's page, although I works with the Walkman phone.
Edit: I forgot to mention that all tethering features on my phone works fine. I can turn on my hotspot and I can plug it to a PC's USB port and act like a modem. I just can't do it with my router.
Why I want to do this: Most of you who have nice broadband access may be wondering why I want to use my phone to provide Internet access to my router. Here's why: In the region I live, broadband access is a joke. A miserable 1Mbps insufficcient to watch even the lamest youtube video. But it has no limitations, so it is good for TV upgrades and other connected devices to do their maintenance.
On the other hand, my phone provider has a wonderful coverage around my house, sustaining an average of 3Mbps, reaching 10Mbps late at night. So, when I want a quicker net, like to watch Internet movies or download large files, I used to turn off my router and turn on the phone's hotspot. But even setting its SSID and password identical to the ones on the router, it takes some tweaking on the devices for them to reconnect. It was a nuisance.
With this 3G router, all I would have to do is connect the phone to it and it would switch from WAN to 3G. All I need is a driver that would make it recognize the phone and use it as a modem.

I messed with wifi tethering a bit a while back. Couldn't get it to work. My other phone sees it as a wifi point but won't connect. Something to do with LG not liking tethering I heard. I saw this mod that fixes tethering for some devices but never tried it ( I don't really need tethering). I am curious if it fixes it:

Thank you for your suggestion. I understand that the mod you suggested can have nice effects on slow or even broken tethering.
The problem is that I haven't made myself clear on the first post. I can see it now and I'll edit it right away. The tethering feature on my phone works fine, both WI-FI and USB tethering works. What I need is a USB tethering that makes my router "think" that my phone is actually a 3G USB modem. When I use this feature on a PC, I have to install the drivers. The bad news is that I can't install these drivers on the router.

Okay. I figured if wifi tether isn't working then usb isn't either. So what firmware do you have on which it is working?
There was a small discussion on a thread a month or so ago; it wasn't working for the 4 or so people who posted then...I think we were all on ICS or higher, but not positive. That's when I tried to see if I could get wifi tether to work. I didn't try any usb tethering.
So I guess I am not understanding the advantage of plugging direct to the router. Why not plug the phone to pc (signal in) and the router to pc (signal out)? Because it would be easier to switch from the signal you normally use? This is a new one on me... I have no idea if an ethernet switch would be of use...2 signals in for the router to broadcast and choose which wifi signal on the client end (not sure if your router could do that, just grasping at straws, since I haven't tried anything like this).
It's weird other phones work though, so I am still curious if Crossbreeder mod would do anything. It seems the other phones have a piece of software the O3D does not. Unless the router has drivers installed for those devices by default, which I doubt; you didn't install anything for those to work, they worked out-of-the-box, so to speak, right?

Exactly. Both WIFI and USB tether always worked out of the box for me, with several ROMs, either stock and modded ROMs. Eventualy some modded ROMs did break tether, but usually broke many other things as well Probably too undervolt and/or too overclock among other things I don´t understand.
I remember that discussion about not working tether, but didn´t get involved. It never happened to me. I believe it is more a hardware issue. If it happened to me, the first thing I would do is install the original stock Froyo to be sure if tether didn´t work with the most original firmware.
As to why I want to put my O3D as the Internet provider for my network: I have several devices connected: 3 PCs, 2 Androids, 1 TV and 1 Blu-ray player. The last two are not too easy to make connect to a different WIFI net, even if they have the same SSID and passwords. I used to turn off the router and then turning on the phone´s hotspot. The problem is that almost always several of these devices didn´t realise the switch and kept trying to connect to the unavailable router. The same thing happend when switching from the phone to the router.
Also, I don´t want to buy a 3G modem, because the speed advantage (and low fees) are "connected" to my voice plan. The SIM card is my primary phone number So, I need it to be able to make and receive calls. If I purchase a new SIM card, I would have to cope with two bills. Again, no more advantages.
Breaking news: I just noticed that the Sony Ericsson Walkman phone I am using as a modem only gets 1Mbps download, exactly the speed my provider guarantees. My P920H can get more than 10 Mbps on times, but usually between 3 and 5 Mbps. I believe that V28b stock ICS somehow unlocks some sort of ISP speed limit. Now, more than ever I want to use my phone as a modem on my router.
