Hi guys, hopefully a stupid noob question that I can't seem to figure out.
I'm a bit of an organizational freak (as I'm sure many of you are), and like having sub-folders within main folders.
For example, I have some e-books on my Fuze and like having sub-folders with the author name.
So, folder structure looks like
\Storage_Card\ebooks\Edgar_Allen_Poe\...
When I go to open an ebook in MobiPocket, I cannot see that sub-folder (only the main path to ebooks).
The same issue plagues me with other programs, such as PocketNester...I'm assuming it has something to do with the Windows Mobile method of scanning directories in the file open dialog.
Anybody else have this problem?
I have noticed this in other apps, but never used mobipocket, so I think it's the behavior of the WinMo file manager as well. Maybe you need to put your directories on the root of the storage card. Have you tried shortcuts? Doubt it will work and it would probably drive you nuts that your shortcuts arent neatly organized in subfolders...
I don't think you can use sub-folders with mobipocket (or ereader). If you want things organized, then I would do something like put #'s or letters at the start of each author's books to keep them organized together (1-xxx, 1-yyy for the 1st author, 2-aaa, 2-bbb for the second, where the xxx's are the book names).
I find the file explorer in some apps pretty annoying, too. Like in pocket rar, you can create an archive for things like cab files. If you want to add to the archive, then it has to be on the storage card and in the root of any of the main folders on the storage card. That is annoying as crap. There are other situations where you can save a file in either main memory or storage memory, and you'll only have access to root folders, or sometimes in the main memory only to the folders in \my documents. It's like the person who designed this crap was auditioning for a job with apple to work on iphone development. I wish I knew a work-around (other than cutting-and-pasting after saving things), but I don't.
Okay what I want is a way to encrypt files on my SD Card transparently. For example, when I make a "Compressed Folder" in Astro File Manager called "b" it makes a file called "b.acd"
What I want is a way to encrypt file like that, where it makes a file on the SD Card but like b.acd, it's encrypted (I assume b.acd isn't because I am assuming anyone who has Astro can read it).
So I want the folder to act like any other folder on my phone (and in order to access it I have to unlock my phone, no one who doesn't know my unlock pattern can't use it) and if they take out the card and use a card reader all they see is a file that they cannot open.
I guess whatever app does this will ask me for a key when I install it so then the app will encrypt and decrypt the data as I am using it.
I have searched the market for encryption software, but with the apps I found I had to manually encrypt and decrypt the files myself unlike how Astro uses ACD archives...
Possibly maybe there could be a program I can run on my PC to access the encrypted files when I provide it with the key...
I have a similar requirement
What I did was make a disk image and call it pagefile.sys
Then I mount the image to a folder when I want access
If you use an ext filesystem on the image when you plug it into windows all you see is a 1gig file called pagefile.sys and can't access it.
It is not very secure, but hidden well enough so someone can't stumpble upon it. Unless they are a bit computer savvy.
So it depends what your hiding and who your hiding it from.
Where did you put the file, on your card? How did you mount it to a folder? I want something a little more secure. Should the phone get stolen or something, even if the crackhead that steals it doesn't know how to access the files, they might find someone who can...
Yep. The file can go anywhere on the SD and be called anything.
it is mounted with a terminal emulator to any folder in the same way you would in Linux.
the command would be
# mount -o loop -w -t ext2 filename foldername
If you want something more secure I would look elsewhere.
Truecrypt is excellent. But you won't be able to access your files on your phone. Truecrypt for android would be the nuts if someone wants to port it. It is open source.
Oh so you can get a termnal emulator? Where did you get yours from, the market?
Yep. Connectbot is the best.
It says ConnectBot is an SSH client, so do you have to connect to localhost or something?
That's right. You get 3 options in connectbot.
Telnet
SSH
Local.
You can set a shortcut to local on your homescreen if you like.
Anyways, does anyone here know how to actually encrypt the files?
I found a program on the Market that lets you store text and pictures (in the paid version) and acesss them directly without encrypting and decrypting them. But it would be nice if there was a free app that let you store files like normal...
APG is what you want if you want security.
An android port of GPG, which is basically NSA quality encryption depending on how you set your keys.
Create your filesystem as mentioned above, and then encrypt it using APG. Delete the original. Now you have an encrypted filesystem. When you want to access, decrypt, mount, make changes, unmount, reencrypt, delete original.
A pain in the butt, but you won't be able to be more secure.
Would you have to repeat those steps everytime you change the filesystem?

Dropbox works awesome, maybe not exactly the way you want it but it does the trick.

No it doesn´t because at first the Dropbox doesn´t copys the Files automaticaly on my SD and second I have at least 13 gigabytes of Music and only 8gb Dropbox space...
Maybe Doubletwist AirSync?
That one is more specific with working with Music/Photo/Video, if you're looking for something a little more generic for syncing, there's also a portable app called Toucan

And the problem with Toucan... I can´t access my SD with that over Wifi... any idea for that?
Try "WebSharing", there is a lite and a paid version. The second one includes some extra options for videos and music I think, not sure on which are the differences, anyway, it works great for me!
You can simply share a folder on your PC and using a file explorer on your phone (I have tried this using Estrong file explorer) you can search the LAN for shared drives. Find the folder you have shared on your PC and access files from your phone.
Well, another method - this is the way I do it, but it requires root access on your phone.
If you have root access, then you can install an app "Samba filesharing". And, this enables to make the phone a samba server.
Then, you can simply connect to ip address of your phone (or the samba server name you specified) from your PC and seamlessly access/modify/delete files on the sd card all the time. I would even suggest mapping a network drive to make it even more convenient.
I would be also interested in a solution like that. Mainly for Music, but also for other stuff/files.
Here is what I tried out so far:
I looked into Double Twist (a cumbersome resource hog on my netbook and always crashing), Winamp Sync (playlist and not folder-based, lack of control on what is happening) and Wifi Music Sync (lots of bad reviews, people lost files and else).
Has anyone tried Sugar Sync? If I read their website right, it syncs first to their cloud, which is the last place, where I want my personal files.
The solution with Samba Server or ES Explorer works (I also tried a simple FTP setup with Filezilla on the Desktop and AndFTP or SwiFTP (FTP server on phone) and any FTP client on the desktop. Problem with those solutions, it's all manual.
So far nothing satisfactory. I'm with the OP on this one, a small, neat, small resource solution, where you simply define the folders to be synced, would be best. Any more ideas? Thanks so far!
Just my 2 cents (definitely an UGLY solution): I've been using Syncness to sync over wifi. It's not the worst solution and has the benefit of working both with locally shared network drives as well as dropbox.

Actually, i love syncness. I've been using it for a month now. It's not perfect, but it works well for me, like syncing my documents folder to my Milestone and DHD, and back.
Titanium Media Sync can do this - syncs all types of files (not just media) - search on market (I can't post a link)

I'm using PCFileSync and have no problems. It's always being updated.
I have Titanium Media Sync, and it works very well for syncing files to dropbox, but I would really like to set it up to work with ftp, so I could sync files straight to my computer. How do I set something like this up? I"m a super ftp noob

I believe what you are looking for is possibly The Missing Sync.

However, I have asked the developer questions and received no answers. There is a trial version available but i'm having issues which need answered by the developer. The software is not cheap at $35.00 single machine license.

Here's my scenario:
2 computers, htc evo 3d (now trying on a galaxy tab).
Desktop and laptop sync the "My pictures" folder (1gb and growing) by using microsoft live mesh. And then, I have The Missing Sync reading the "My pictures" folder and syncing that folder to the Galaxy Tab SD card into a folder called "My Pictures".
Questions I have asked the developer (Ticket# 813081)
(1) Hi, Is there a file count limitations? I plan to use this to sync my pictures folder which has a couple thousand items (1,533 Files, 41 Folders, 1.48gb of data ) as of this moment and growing. This will be to a 32 GB microsdhc card in my evo 3d. Would there be any possible problems I should know about?
(2) Are there any file size limitations? (im aware of fat32 4gb single file size limit of the storage device) But does The missing sync have a file size limit of its own?
(3a) Does The Missing Sync Hash files for sync? If so, does it store temp files?
(3b) How does missing sync determine what needs synced around?
(4) I plan on adding a Samsung galaxy tab ... I'd also like to sync my pictures to it as well as the evo. 1 computer, two mobile devices. Is this possible with single license or will i need a multi license?

the issues i am having are that the whole process takes about 7 minutes from the moment sync is pressed, to any activity is noticed. And then, files start flowing, but 15 minutes later, it stops at random with very vague error log.
maybe you can try FolderSync

+1 for FolderSync. It lets you sync individual folders with Dropbox, with a Windows share, etc.

This is so simple why is there no app that does this, we don't want cloud storage to interfere all we need is a PC/Mac app where you can see your folders/files . Then you want to be able to select folders and files using a checky box ready to sync to ur android device.
Why do you need to select files/folders? Because when you have an mp3 collection of over 40gb you only want a small portion of this on ur android device. The app needs to ensure that ur android device always keeps in sync with the selected PC files so that if you ever add music to ur PC it will get added to android through the sync app.
Now does this app exist or am I going to have to learn to write an android app??

Look into cheetah sync app. Its the closest thing i could find that works for me.

Its been working beautifully for me granted its not fully automatic and requires some configuring before it can do what you want it to do.

No this is still not right, cheetah sync is just a small service that sits on your pc. you can't use it to select the files on your pc you want on your phone, everything has to be done with folder pairing on the phone. Now if I want to choose 10 albums that are in random locations on my hard drive that would take ages to do on my phone. On the PC this would be a simple task.(If the app exists!!!)

Where do the attachments in my hotmail get saved on my local phone storage? I have fully unlocked L710 and HTC Titan. Someone sent me a few clips attached to hotmail. I can play it from my email attachment but would like to find the folder where it is locally stored after download, and then be able to play the content from Zune. Is there any homebrew app for such file management? I have File Explorer, but don't know where these attachments can be found, then moved so that they are playable in Zune Hub.
this is a great question that I would also like to know the answer to. There has to be some way to mount the storage and manage it from a pc like you can with Android.

I did not really bother trying to find the answer. But someone who uses Android in my family tried to send me a few clips of music that I really really wanted to hear. Now ofcourse I have got it via bluetooth and that I can access. However, he sent a few more by email as my bluetooth transfer was slow. I had presumed I can find these songs in the same place. BUT nope!
However, here is my progress.
File explorer -> Applications data -> Volatile -> Email attachments -> go to each folder. Each folder represents one attachment.
So I was happy after posting this that I found where the attachments are.
However, when I copy and paste the same under my Zune contents, I cannot see it in my Zune Hub and cannot ofcourse play it from Zune hub!
Zune on the phone uses a database of media files. Merely moving your files under \My Documents\Zune\Content\* isn't going to help. The only way that I know of to add arbitrary files is to copy them to the PC, then sync them using the PC Zune software. Nobody has yet figured out how to do it more directly, although I'm sure it's possible.
Mounting the phone as USB Mass Storage is just not even vaguely likely to happen. The amount of driver writing and re-configuration that would be needed... I don't think you realize what you're asking for. There are deinitely options, though; for example, my Root Webserver app lets you browse the phone's filesystem (including uplodaing and downloading files) from your PC. You just have to use a web browser instead of a traditional file manager.

So does that mean that even though we do have homebrew file explorers, we cannot really control our attachments i.e. sandbox issue? I have realised in last two days that our file explorer functionally isn't same as those traditional WM6.5 or Android ones. Hence theoratically speaking yes we do have file explorer but not to its full functionality..which leads me to another question. So ideally what do you use your file explorer for?
Aside from aiding my research and testing my hacks, here are a few things I use file browsers for:
Copying ebook files (.MOBI and .PRC) to the Kindle directory.
Manually editing the Marketplace configuration files (for example, some downloads are even bigger than the 200 MB that Marketplace Config will allow you to specify).
Freeing up space on the phone's storage (deleting temprorary files of my choosing, rather than simply purging the whole phone).
Backing up application data to my PC.
Turning music files into ringtones/alarms/etc.
A number of these can currently be automated using apps, and there are others that could be more useful to other people, but that's what I've found to be useful.

Hi all,
I have a quite special issue. I hope someone here can help me or point me into the right direction.
Huawei P9 with Android 6.0, rooted.
For my purposes (*) I use a MicroSD card with 128MB capacity that contains a lot of small files (abt. 1.5 million files).
I wondered for weeks, why the phone becomes incredibly slow and hangs from time to time.
I learned that the Media Storage service could be responsible, because it tries to index all files and that can take a very long time if there are lots of files.
I deactivated Media Storage (using Titanium Backup) and BINGO! My phone is like new. Snappy, well usable.
Since I don't need MTP access to the phone, I thought it might be good now.
HOWEVER:
I just found out that ring tones don't work anymore, neither for phone ringing, nor for the alarm clock etc.
It seems that those apps also rely on the file index, that's gone now.
Without any ring or alarm tone, the phone is almost unusable again.
Do you know of any way to make the MTP / Mediastorage server ignore one directory when indexing? That would help, as I could simply let it ignore the directory on SD card that contains those 1.5 million files.
Or can you think of any other good solution for my problem?

(*) to explain my usecase, why I need so many files on SD: I am a photographer, doing gigapixel panorama photography. For presenting my work to customers, I put my demo panoramic tours onto the SD card. These are HTML files with a data directory containing JPG tiles of the gigapixel panoramas. One panorama image consist of up to a few 100.000 files. A webserver running on the phone makes the panorama tours accessible to onboard browsers or, via WiFi hotspot, to other devices in the surrounding, e.g. a PC or tablet of the customer.
I considered solutions like an external storage (USB OTG) connected to the phone only when I present that stuff to the customer, or an entirely separate device (Pandora / Dragonbox Pyra or so) to host and serve the panorama tours, but I like to carry only one device, the small smart phone, to do it all. An extenal OSB OTG storage solution would almost fit my needs. But.. only almost, because a small storage is something that can get lost or stolen easily and that needs additional handling and provides additional points of failure, which I don't want to have in front of the customer.
Android is capable of doing it all, and my philosophy is, that a computer needs to adapt to my way of work than vice versa. This was the intention when Neumann and Zuse invented programmable computers. And I don't really want to eat humble pie here.

There's an Xposed module that can do exactly what you're asking. But I'm not sure how nicely the xposed framework will work with your Huawei device (assuming you're still stock). An attempt to install XPosed a few months ago has failed.
But I retried today with the Wanam build (official one failed back then) and it worked well. Downloaded this module now and will see how it works.

"Directories: If checked the media scanner will only scan directories that have a .scanMedia file (i.e. an empty file with a dot as first part of the name similar to the .noMedia file). Use a file explorer app to create this file. This file can be placed in a directory that may contain subdirectories. The subdirectories will be scanned as well. If unchecked all directories will be scanned (except for the ones containing a .noMedia file - this default behavior of the media scanner is not altered by the Xposed Media Scanner Optimizer)."

I initially thought about the .nomedia alternative. But I wasn't clear on if the 1.5 million files you have were actually media files. If they are then creating a .nomedia file should do the trick. If not, then you have the Xposed module
I personally have a few .nomedia files here and there on my SD card. And it does what its supposed to, ie; stops any media file that's present in those folders from showing up in the Gallery/music player.
So I guess its safe to assume that they weren't indexed either

Thise mana files that I have are almost all JPG files. There are a few .js and .xml files, too, that control how the .jpgs are rendered on the client's browser, also some video files that are embedded into the virtual tours, but about 99.5% of the files are .jpg.

It doesn't matter what type of files you have. If the folder has a .nomedia file, it will not be scanned for anything.
This is standard android behavior, and does not require xposed to be installed.
