I would say that the only tried and true method currently is the "GoldCard" method. Go to the following link, at the unlockr.com,and follow the steps for making your gold card. It takes some time the first time around, but is the only proven method. Follow the steps very carefully in this posting and you should be set http://bit.ly/cM9IPw
Chris

It still works, I just rooted one for a co-worker last week.

if its 0007 and up... newest are 0010, 0013 and 14 and all need goldcards. from here on out I would expect all new models to have perfected SPL's and we can weed out the noobs here with bricked phones because they dont pay attention.
If its a fender LEAVE IT ALONE
other then that do some major reading on making a goldcard and have 2-3 spare micro sd cards because not all are compatible.

you dont even want to know the amount of stupidity I have had to deal with since I rooted the fender rom. Im sorry if I sounded mean or angry... but I found everything I needed to know by looking and searching sometimes fo rhours. So I get a mite bit ticked when kids come along wanting someone to hold thier hand rather then learn it on thier own.
Sorry if I offended
On top of that I said to "weed out the noobs" meaning once every phone has a perfected SPL, then these people will have to finally learn things on thier own. Messing with the perfected SPL's is what causes people to brick thier phones when they dont pay attention.. then we have 100 posts of "blah blah bricked my phone and Im screwed" or "think tank fo rmy bricked mytouch"

Hard SPL Vs SSPL (Switching)

Hey Guys,
I am guessing that this was answered, but i am still not sure after reading some posts on Hard SPL vs SSPL. Basically what is the main difference, does SSPL work? If i switch from Cingular to HTC rom via either method can i easily switch back (in case i need to return my phone to cingular - will it void the warranty?)
Really want to switch to HTC rom, but not sure what are the reprecautions.
Also a really newb question : I understand what is meant by flashing the rom, but what does it mean ("radio" or "radio version upgrade")
Thanks
Dmitriy

Ive always used hard spl for my hermes and plan on using when I get my tilt as well. Austins right about spoon feeding though, just read, read, and read some more. I have friends who have ppc's and I have given them xda site address and yet no one takes it upon themselves to educate. Instead they call me a whole lot of stupid ****. Not directed at you but in short Ill say its better to know wtf your doing so you dont have to rely on others for info.

Brand New G1 Bricked ! Help

I just bought a brand new T-Mobile G1 Black from Craigslist for someone in my family. While i was rooting the phone i decided to use Haykuro SPL. As soon i rebooted the phone it bricked on me and now i am pretty much freaking out.
Does Someone Knows How To Fix It ? And do you think HTC will take it back even tho i didnt bought from T-Mobile and dont even have the receipt ?!
Please guys help me.
did you bother checking which board the phone was using? pvt or dvt? did you know some people were having issues with the new spl? and how is it bricked? won't boot? stuck at g1 screen and can't enter recovery\bootloader?
try theses instuctions and tell me if they work make sure you pull the battery before holding power and home if it get you to the recovery screen you should be good. also try it with power camera
1. pulled sd card out put it in a sdcard reader and loaded the enginering bootloader
2. took battery out
3. put sd card back into g1
4. held power + home
5. while still holding power + home slid battery back in
6. when recovery showed up hit alt+w and alt+s
7. popped sdcard back out and and loaded my favorite rom version
8. put sd card back in
9. held power + home and flashed the rom and all came alive
First off, no, HTC will not take it back (maybe if you pack 200 dollars or so with it the will). What do you mean "bricked"? Can you still get into the bootloader or not? If you can't, then sorry, it is bricked for good (atleast as far as we at XDA know)
yeah unfortunately i cant make it to the bootloader...it stays on the T-Mobile G1 sign...

The SPL loads before the G1 logo. Are you pressing back+power?
Why o people why do you not read the threads on this before you do anything. Geez. Do you not study and take precautions before you do anything?? Your most DEF screwed. If you cant get into any of the bootloader, then its bricked and no one has found a way to fix it "yet"( hopeing someone does). Please for the love of God. READ READ READ.
@futango, because people are dumb and get excited before reading, making their 2-300 dollar phone a 2-300 dollar brick. Its cool, if you saw how disastrous this forum was you would see how many topics there are on this issue, and you wouldn't have this problem. Hard lesson learned but oh well, have to deal with it until someone finds a fix, to which there isnt one now. Too bad. Next time you'll read hu? Reading is easier than spending that hard earned money....unbelieveable.
Reported.
Davil124, its seems like people are bickering again instead of trying to help you. lol.
Like what jashu said, after flashing the haykuro SPL, try holding BACK + POWER, to enter recovery mode. When in recovery mode, remove your memory card (place it in a card reader), and delete the update.zip that contains the haykuro SPL. Proceed to copy the update.zip that contains a hacked ROM (JF1.5, ADP1.5H, etc.) to your memory card. Then flash the ROM - update.zip by pressing ALT + S. This must be done after updating to the haykuro SPL (almost everyone forgets to do this, and end up looping.) Then just let it boot up (it may take a few minutes, so don't panic and pull the battery, just let it load.)

Futango is right though. If you are going to jump into a hack without reading, you get what you deserve and you deserve what you get.
EVERYTHING ON THIS FORUM IS POTENTIALLY PHONE BRICKING.
Once you fully realize that, then you will think twice about flashing whatever update.zip someone casually posts on here.
p.s. can everyone stop treating Haykuro like some kind of god? He got a hold of some HTC pre-release builds and posted em on here. That's it.

Jashsu you sound really jealous. lol jk. But I do agree with you. First jesusfreke was god, now haykuro. Isn't that blasphemy? lol.
But hopefully people will begin to realize the risks involved with flashing custom firmware. I've seriously looped at least 12 times (bad md5 checksums, faulty memory card, u name it lol), wiped over 100 times, but thankfully found solutions to every problem I've faced, but that was because I did my research before jumping the gun. I'm fully aware of all the risks involved, so all I can say to everyone is, proceed with caution.

I'm not jealous about having bricked about a dozen phones, i'll tell ya that
People should be approaching updaters with a serious heaping of caution, especially for something like the SPL. I won't blame Haykuro for not having fully tested the SPL before releasing it, but honestly he probably should have put up more than just a link and a wink (like I dunno some huge warnings and disclaimers). And for sure those links should have been pulled the moment that news of bricks came in. Just my two cents...
Well this sucks to hear man. Loosing a G1 is never fun...But the recent threads about the new SPL made it clear that it was only designed for the PVT. And from the looks of it, you probably have a DVT or some other derivative.

Haykuro is not to blame for anything. He also shouldn't have put up more info because....he can't. All of this is pretty much undocumented. It's all trial and error. If it wasn't for people like Haykuro, Dude, or JF...etc. We wouldn't have any of these new updates to our phones.
OP you should of read this first before attempting to use the new SPL.

Let's imagine for a second that there was a room full of really thirsty kids. I walk in with an unmarked bottle of a strange looking liquid. I can't describe it because I myself don't know much about it. Would you say it would be irresponsible on my part to just leave it there with those kids who don't know any better? More to the point, would you blame me if one of those kids got sick after drinking it?
In a more perfect world, everyone would do a lot of prior research, understand the risks associated with experimental hacks, and fully accept the consequences of bricked devices. Unfortunately this is not a perfect world.
alright a appreciate some of you for been nice and try to help (that was the point for me writting this at first). And for the ones been rude and trying to act all smart ! F&@$ Off ! alright ? i need help and i learned from my mistakes. If you think i acted not rational or smart, you dont have to say anything. Just stay quite and move on and help others that need more help in the forum. Just dont come and start saying stuff that are not helping at all, and for the record i did not blame nobody for the mistake I made. I personally got a G1 running the SPL just fine, and i just didnt know that there were 2 different boards running on the G1's. So please stay away if you are not going to say anything positive, and try to help. thank you.
that sucks
Cant we all just get along
Two months agoi tried updating my phone. I did a reboot after loading a update.zip file from my sd card and my G1 didnt turn on at all. No g1 screen or any kind of response.
And now my G1 is bricked.
My question is do you think they will exchange it for me still? What should I say happened?
Alright this is enough. I think instead of treating users with bricked phones as noobs and lecturing them about being careful, we get to the point and try and help.
First off, we have a whole thread dedicated to the bricked phones now. One member is working on schematics to build an actual USB wire for a force install of a SPL to possibly repair the bricked phone issues. Right now, the plans are done, so we will see if he is able to construct the cable. However, the schematics are already uploaded, so maybe you should give a shot at it. look for the G1 brick technical think thank thread.

Bricked my Magic?

Hi,
my Device is a 32B Device.
i tried to change my vodafone Splash-Screen, so i followed this howto:
showpost.php?p=3843361&postcount=7
nk02 said:
with windows or linux (on wine + net framework 2):
1)download this
password "androidsocket"
2)with createG1splash create your splash (mysplash.rgb565) from a gif or png 332x498
3)put the splash file ( mysplash.rgb565 ) in sdk tools/ directory
4)boot the magic in fastboot mode (witch back+power)
5)on terminal (in sdk tools/ path):
Code:
fastboot flash splash1 mysplash.rgb565
fastboot reboot
(you need [here is a link, but as a new user i cannot post links, look at the original post] haykuro spl to flash splash screen!)
in this thread there are some splash jpg/gif !

This howto is linked in the newbie topic btw.
So i flashed the haykuro.spl using the recovery Menu(i booted it from fastboot), but now my phone doesnt work.
Power + Back at the start => no reaction.
Power + Volume Down => no reaction
Power + Home => no reaction
It doesn't boot anymore, the Vodafone Splash Screen freezes.
And if i plug it on my pc, the usb device cannot be recognized.
I think i bricked my Magic ...
I don't understand how this could happen!?
Any Suggestions?
Did you just say you flashed Haykuro's Death SPL?
brick. sorry, no response to "special" boots and no usb = brick
could you possibly list what you did, start to finish, just so we can better understand what's happened? i'm not entirely sure - did you successfully get a new splash screen and then change the spl and that's when it all went bad, or what?
personally, i can live with just about any splash screen, the risks involved with changing it are certainly not worth it imho...
it does nothing at all ? or you got the blue led? if its same advenced as a brick (it does absolutly nothin can be a specific hardware problem not big deal it happend to me because of that even the jtag didn't work )

Wow... you have no idea the situation nor the circumstance that people brick their phone. It only takes a small mistake to do so. I just came from having a G1 which I modded and updated constantly just about every other day trying new things. I took apart the phone to replace the physical keyboard and ended up damaging a cable from the screen. I went to Tmobile store and purchased a Fender edition MyTouch which is special in a few ways. I had no problem rooting the phone with the Goldcard method, aside from finding a working 2gb sd... I decided to upgrade the 32a SPL and radio which bricked my phone. I see no reason why it would have bricked it but I wont be trying it again.
Everyone i repeat EVERYONE makes mistakes, all be it some make some pretty wild ones... but we are all Human and calling people idiots that do not know how to read and follow directions will not help anyone here.
These forums are designed to help and assist those who want to get the full potential out of their phones and customize to their own personal wants and needs. We should all be here to help those with questions (even dumb ones... sigh) for none of you would have the knowledge you have if you had not learned it. So please stop the bigotry and ignorance and be a little more helpful to those with issues. For those who have issues, dont go blaming the devs for messing up your phones, you know the risks so proceed cautiously and learn from your mistakes.
Fact is if you had followed directions exactly you wouldn't have bricked your phone. It's doubtful the tutorial was wrong.

What? Another assumption already! I'm not calling anyone an idiot (in this thread LOL) haha, I simply agreed about the people bricking, not following wonderfully provided instructions and hiking up the costs. Sorry to be an ass, but if you stopped coming to those assumptions, perhaps your first phone wouldn't have been a nice brick!

I never said the tutorial was wrong just that I made a mistake in picking the wrong one or messing up somewhere... obviously.
I'm not assuming anything... its fact you only have a general idea of how someone breaks their phone in that they made a mistake, but that you dont know how or the circumstances that caused it...
I wasnt assuming you were calling anyone an idiot and sorry I used your post to quote and not the others before generalizing "anyone" who breaks their phone as an idiot who cant follow directions. It could easily be that someone was not aware of specifics and hastily updated items that are not for their particular phone or missed a step.
In life it is far too easy to make mistakes, better to sympathize, say do better next time, and move on... simple as that.
I, for one, can't help but laugh when I make some mistakes. I was fully prepared to pay for another phone because I knew what "I" did broke it and no one was to blame but myself. Life goes on, pick yourself up and move forward. Sorry??? that I took a particular interest with a fellow mytouch user who mistakingly messed up and put the phone in the "break" status. I work as an IT Administrator for many large companies and mistakes can happen all of the time, I'm just glad they can happen to me and not a client
We all know the risks involved when we mess around with the phone. I also had no idea what a bricked phone did when bricked... until this morning

New to the Android World

I finally got a mytouch 3G with the 32B board.
I am sure I am going to need alot of help on rooting the device, etc.
I am going to have some fun with this....
When creating a gold card, can it be used for another mytouch 3g?
How do I get the set of code from the terminal? Can this be done by a windows program?

Got some time last night I got a gold card created and even replace the perfect spl on the mytouch 3g
Details Below
Sapphire PVT 32B Ship S-ON H
HBoot 1.33.0009
Radio however is 3.22.20.17 (a surprised, I thought it should have been a 2 series. Can this radio be used and can it impact future flashing?)
Now, the next step will be to actually root the phones. I have encountered a few issues,
ie wrong ebi when using the linda file manager way to flash.
ie could not find file when using the fastboot way.....
I will read more, but I always welcome tips to make my life easier!
Thanks

LOL. I have to start somewhere. And the only way to learn is read, do and get advice from people in the know. I have been using HTC since the blue angel days and have build a few roms for my own use using someone else kitchen. And I also have brick a few phones in my days.
But I have no knowledge of linux or android phones, but I am willing to learn.
In Wimo, there seem to be a set ways of doing things. In Android, people are still discovering ways to do the same things........so this old way is still new to me....and it still seem to work
You're on the good path.
I highly recommend flashing back a 32B radio (that thing that you flashed via goldcard flashed a 32A radio (3. series, you need the 2. series)) and then you will be able to use all ROMs from the G1 section.
imo .. don't use goldcard unless it's the only option to use .. cuz it sometimes tricky and complicated and here you are. flashed the wrong radio
undo that asap and root using flashrec.apk if your stock rom is cupcake (which probably is)
then u can change ur spl and radio even later
LOL. It is all good now.
I got everything going and my last step it to find a 32B rom..any recommendations?
Do I change it to update and flash it?
oh yeah, go to the g1 development section and download the superD 1.10.3 rom. 10mb hack for speed, non 10mb hack for gaming. all instructions in the first few posts. its simple once you've flashed a rom before. im always learning here, but i barely post. good luck and enjoy!

I end up using stokes rom (android 2.1) for now
Definitely open to suggestion!
I also highly reccomend either CyanogenMod or SuperD. Both are fast and stable, and because of their popularity, if you do need help with either one, there are lots of people who can. Welcome to Android, sir. =)
Thanks to all your encouragement, support and suggestions, I flashed CyanogenMod and am loving it.

Edit: I had to upgrade via Fastboot to a version not very different (the same as?) the one you have, then I was able to use the HTCDEV.COM site to unlock my bootloader. I'm still S-ON, but I have a custom kernel, which I believe is what you're after???? /edit
No, we mean it, really, READ THIS FIRST, especially the parts called "Section Three" and "Recovery":
the real post contains links in this quoted section
S-OFF for Retail (S-ON) Devices, NOTE ADDED 8/17/11
Revolutionary's site also has the root zip that is needed. Does this give me root?
Boot into H-boot, then recovery, use camera button and select "install zip from sd card". When zip is done reboot phone, check superuser.
PERMANENT-ROOT (NEW!) & Temp-Root (v2) for any MT4GS (Windows) Great Guide with very good information!

The Recovery section is spot-on except you don't HAVE to use ROM Manager if you know anything about these phones. I came straight from a G1 to the MT4GS and there's not much difference in this regard. BTW, I used CWM 5.0.2.7 with zero problems, so skip the "older" section of "clockwork mod"
The above-supplied link also links to this thread which I think is a step by step guide. IDK, cus it kept popping up LITERALLY IN EVERY SINGLE SEARCH (not being rude, just emphasizing something here) I EVER DID REGARDING ROOT ON MT4GS so I just started ignoring it (I wasn't about to do the Revolutionary method because I'm both broke and cheap and can't justify spending $$$ just to get root the script-kiddie way and not knowing how it was done so I could undo it).
There are other links, but given the number of days I blew trying to find out how to root this phone, I can't do it all over again for someone else. These above answer your question.
Hope it helps.
However, if you've read this far, your posted bootloader "screen" doesn't scream to me that you are unlocked (unless, of course, it actually DOES say "unlocked" on your bootloader screen). What you say you want to do is install custom ROMs. S-ON Unlocked is fine for this. The ONLY caveat I've seen is that if you flash any ROM that requires you to flash a kernel, you have to flash the kernel via Fastboot because recovery doesn't have permissions to write the kernel to the partition that houses it. It's easy to do though, just requires you to read a little more to get Fastboot working (unless of course you already know how to use fastboot -- very similar if not identical to doing so with the G1). Good luck.

Just wondering what you meant by this. What money do you have to spend by rooting with Revolutionary? I have been rooted since this method was first posted, and didn't spend any money.

+1, while all devs who pour their hearts into this ASK for a donation, they also realize not everyone is in the position to make a donation. If anyone ever charges outright for something, their a joke. Ive seen it happen on the shift side

My sincere apologies. I remembered there was a reason other than just not knowing how they accomplished the S-OFF, and I could have sworn that to root the MT4GS you had to get some beta version or unreleased something that you had to donate to get... maybe I am remembering wrong (this does happen from time to time ) I've gone back to http://revolutionary.io and sure enough the download is available free of charge completely. I have no idea where I got the notion that it was a pay app. *shrugs* Still, I like to do things like rooting manually (or at worst, using a tool the manufacturer themselves provide (because I like to support and encourage manufacturers to open up to developers like this)).
After reading my post again, I would like to point out I have nothing against the revolutionary team, BTW... it does kinda read like I do, but I don't. I just prefer manual methods.
nah, thinking about it.... someone offered rooting as a pay thing. If it wasn't rev, and clearly it wasn't, IDK who it was. I remember specifically, though, seeing a "to download this you must do xyz" and I remember xyz including some kind of pay subscription to something. It's been more than a couple months though, and I only saw it a time or two, so I can't remember. But I saw it somewhere. Sorry for the confusion, mea culpa.
No worries - plenty of people out there that take the free knowledge we work hard to concentrate here and scalp people charging (usually) outlandish prices for things that are otherwise free for all to use.
That you saw something somewhere that people had put up to get paid off the sweat and tears of the Rev team, unfortunately, surprises me not in the least.

I have rooted 5 different (brands of) phones now, and often will have friends or family ask me to root and rom their phones, and I always do it without charge, because it just puts a bad taste in my mouth when I see people charging for rooting, because I was able to get all my knowledge free of charge. I think that charging for it goes against the spirit of the whole rooting and roming community. I have no problem donating mind you.
Yeah, I'd love to donate. Did it before a couple times, back before I had a wife, a kid, a mortgage LOL. I just wish money wasn't so tight. So I do what I can, occasionally offering my time to research posts for newcomers and try to simplify things for them. Then, posting, only to realize someone beat me to the punch
Eventually I'll have some dev environment set up so I can [learn how to] give back to this fine community but until then...
