My 9-year-old daughter really wants a tablet, and I'm considering getting her one of the ultra cheap ones that's floating around, especially in this cyber-sale week. She doesn't have the best history of caring for her things, so I don't want to spend more than $100 on something she'll likely break sooner than I'd like to know. I recognize this means I'll end up with junk, but I'm trying to filter the junk.
My main concerns are having at least Android 2.1, and the ability to hopefully hack the genuine Market onto it, although I'll settle for the Amazon Appstore. Being able to do all the basic things without being horrific at it would also be very nice.
Does anyone have a specific model they could point to? I'm seeing some Velocity Microsos and Pandigitals on sale, along with some cheap no-names from sites like ahappydeal.com, but I'm trying to make an informed decision.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DealExtreme.com have a lot of Android items. Just be sure to read the reviews. They may be extremely cheap but there are limitations. I use the website to buy cheap gadgets as gifts for my friends lol. But yea, if you need a simple Android tablet with a certain spec give them a try.

Yeah, I already buy a lot of things from there, but was hoping I might find someone who has more direct experience with a specific model.
I'd run up to Walmart, Staples, Office Max, or Radio Shack and see what they have in regards to e-readers. Velocity Cruz Micro is one I believe is sub $100 one at my local Radio Shack. Find one that you like for the price and then see if your able to load the market, or better yet a custom rom.
When your looking in the less than $100 catagory, that's probably your best bet. They're at least made with some care for the consumer in mind, where as an elcheepo china model isn't.

I've not seen anything there in a price point below the Nook Color you're writing from. Certainly no sub-$100 Android tablets. Or has their inventory changed recently?
Well Fry's, BestBuy or Office Max will probably be your best bet to get the feel. Read some reviews on NewEgg or something xD
Oh my bad sub $100. No go with retail stores. Definitely Ebay or DealExtreme. Hard to imagine local stores selling anything cheaper than that.

Fry's is a vague possibility, yes. The other two don't carry tablets that low-end, though. Not by a long shot.

Ah, thanks for the clarification!
Yes, I was looking at the Velocity Cruz units that were on sale on 1SaleADay today, but as I dug into reviews I wasn't liking what I saw. Some really odd limitations and compatibility issues that concerned me. Left me thinking they'd be no less of a frustration than the Chinese ones from the descriptions. Might not be accurate, but that's why I was hoping for people with some real-world experience who did some of the hacking themselves.
Well, I can't help you there, but I can tell you with these cheep units that your experience will almost be gauranteed to be a crapshoot. It might work for me, it might work for you, it might not. I'll dig around the net and see what I can find for you though. I'll report back in the morning, I gotta get some rest for the night.

Really appreciate the assistance. I've done some research of my own, too. I'd love to get her something really good, but I just know for a fact that if I do I'll get a call a week after Christmas that she left it out in the snow, or her dog chewed it up, or something. But I also don't want to get something that will frustrate her enough to CAUSE that.
Wasn't there a £30 7" tablet floating around eBay with a capacitive touch screen running 2.1 Eclair? I'm sure somebody mentioned it on these forums a while back and a few members bought one for family members, might be worth a look there.
Good luck finding one.
Well, most of what I'm finding is Chinese ones that break the hundred dollar mark after shipping and what not. The ones that stay below that either turn to vaporware or are ungodly aweful.

Ah I see, sorry I can't help you any more, I'm not really into tablets and stuff so whatever knowledge I have of the tablet market is very limited. Goodluck finding one, might be worth a look in a few second-hand shops and get a decent used one? My local CEX and Cash Generators etc sell HTC Flyers, Blackbery Playbook and iPads fairly cheap.
Might want to take a look at the amiga tablet ...

While I agree, which was my concern, if I go above that point it's both prohibitively expensive and a really stupid move on my part. I know her well enough to be shocked if this thing survives more than six months. If it does, then I can consider putting real money toward a good one for her. But this is basically a test run both of her responsibility and of how into it she really is.

Be very careful with cheap tablets. They are all extremely weak. Ugly performance, ugly screen. Your kid will hate android having this as first toy.
It is for kid. Buy used older device but good mark

Samsung is first to offer Windows Rt
http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/1613638/windows_rt_samsung_ativ_tab_up_for_preorder.html
Sending from HTC Radar
That's a fair chunk more than I was hoping.
This in my opinion is MS's last chance to get a slice of the mobile market with their W8 Eco system.
With their partners charging that much, I don't hold up much hope.
I was in hopes, RT would be a touch lower in price. Seeing this amount does take some of my excitement away!!!!!
It has me on a rethink........
Maybe my best option is to snag a used W500 tablet and upgrade the O/S to Win8. Use the money I save to buy a pocket battery extender for use on long trips.

wow 550 pounds,
I look forward to see the price of the Surface
Those aren't going to sell at that price.
I saw they'll be asking $650 ($750 with keyboard without battery) for the Atom version.

holy crap you're so right!
I hope someone shoe horns Linux or Mac is onto these things, and directly after there is a fire sale ... then ill get one.
they really screwed themselves with pricing.
I'm seriously considering an Atom version right now since I don't think I'll need a Core CPU.
I haven't seen a Surface Atom version mentioned, but I hope they will exist since I think the form factor is pretty sweet.
The next few weeks should be pretty interesting, once reviews/prices/comparisons are released.

the two posts directly above mine that you quoted also were a little surprised at the price. after a little thought, it would be a very good idea to only sell these wp8/surface devices in the Microsoft stores: customers won't be able to see the 1/4 priced droid tablets or 2/3 prices I pads ( that everyone thinks is the second coming) and limit the leaching to other platforms.

we'll see fairly soon how consumers feel about the pricing. the hardware is g r e a t, so I doubt that will be any reason for poor sales. pricing is sooooo cut throat in tab markets.
Hey guys,
I saw this smartwatch on Indiegogo the other day and I think it's pretty sweet.
http://igg.me/at/kreyos/x/2722203
Looking at the specs sheet alone its definitely something.
What do you guys think? Get it or wait till more is out?
I actually kinda like it, my only real bug with it is the proprietary watch band
I have a black pebble that I use with my s4 constantly and I'm loving it
I'd like my pebble to be more interactive and seem a little more durable
the pebble is built tough but this seems indestructible
if it's really as tough as the indiegogo post makes it out to be I feel like it'll be the only smartwatch to really compete with pebble
although sonys smartwatch 2 is gonna be totally spec'd out soon . .and apple's *supposedly . . and google's *supposedly
I went in on the Agent Kickstarter. I really like the way those guys are approaching their product.
I think the sony one would be nice. But, what about price point? I have a feeling it's gonna be a lot more than $129.
Apple's? nah. I doubt Google's going for a watch. They're probably only interested in Google Glass.
Oh I definitely saw the Agent watch. That is twice the price of any smartwatch. And I'm afraid by the time they finally made that watch, there'll be many others with the same capabilities and cheaper.
I finally went ahead and pledged for the Kreyos. In my opinion it's worth the $130 price tag it has right now. Plus it can do more and looks future proof. I have been eyeing the pebble and almost pledged for the agent but then i didnt like the fact that it only charges wireslessly.

I just observed used Nexus 5 being sold for about $35 less than new within countries which have plenty of stock. Is this the "one born every minute" or something else?
example of used $350
and example of new $385
With OnePlus out in a few weeks for $349 plus unknown on tax and postage, and a few other low-priced unlocked handsets out there, I'm puzzled why Nexus 5 is holding its used price, and its coming under attack on its new price.
Because it's a great phone. Oneplus one may be too big for some. Plus it's a true developers phone. No one knows what the oneplus one sources / blobs for drivers will be like...

I avoid devices for a couple of months to let bugs discovered and resolved.
But that wasn't my question, i don't understand why someone would buy used for 90% of new? It's not like stock is hard to get new.

90% is cheaper than 100%. Not everyone is as fortunate as you to be able to pay 100%
"but it's only $35"
Someone could feed themselves for a week on that. Don't make the mistake of confusing being frugal with being dumb, or that everyone is the same as you

If they're starving they can do with a cheaper Nexus 4 for months.
Warranty is part of frugality, if my new N5 breaks I got some postage costs probably, but I'm less exposed financially than I am with used.
Well luckily for them, it's not your decision what they do with their money
Some people don't care about warranty. Some people know how to use warranty. It's not a problem for them, it's not a problem for you so don't worry yourself about people being "dumb". If you're asking "why isn't everyone like me?", well that's a philosophical question, probably better angled towards facebook

Because the phone is worth a lot more than $350 to most people. Similar phones cost $700 and the Oneplus isn't even being sold really.
Also countries that don't have the Play Store devices, their only choice is to buy them second hand and they are willing to pay as much as the retail cost.
One word answer: demand.

I agree plus we don't know the potential scare story inside the OnePlus for at least month, it needs bulk ownership first from those who have another device already as their main phone.

Those living in other countries buy our used phones. $350 for a used N5 is still half the price they would pay for a new phone in their country.
Anyone living in North America can buy the phone for $350 new and have no incentive to buy it used for that price.

What makes you think people in the US are buying them used for more than they cost new? I would just assume they are all out of seas, but there is no real way of telling. Or is there?
If they are, they must not realize they can buy it new for the same price from Google. Or perhaps they are attempting a scam of some sort.

Even in the USA, sometimes it takes a while to get. And beyond that, it's still cheaper than any other alternatives, and some people prefer it to be cheaper. If it's 10% cheaper than retail, then that's still 10% they save.

So I remembered watching this video of an amazing novelty case for the iPhone 6 and 6+ and always wanted to get one...
Turns out it was actually made!(albeit a different manufacturer) You can go to their site here to check it out.
Is anyone else seriously interested in something like this? Turns out they don't ship to the states but Canadians can get it! I'm sort of hoping on the off chance for someone to order one for me to buy... It's about $19 CAD or $15.50 USD. Shipping is about $33.50 CAD or $27.20 USD for you folks interested.

I tried checking out and the only countries listed are as follows: Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Canada.
Is no one really that interested? I can see why the cost of the case might not even be worth it at all. Just wanting to see if there was anywhere else since I've scoured the webs and haven't found one for our note 4.
That is possibly the stupidest case design I have ever seen. I'm betting after a few days use your phone will probably fly off it flipping it around like that!
Design looks cheap and ugly to me, and the nanchaku trick thing is stupid. Why would you want to do that, and with an $800 phone no less?
Sorry, but thats my 2 cents.

The phone for me was purchased second hand for a fraction of the posted $800 so I can understand people feeling iffy about that if they did pay that much.
All-in-all, understood everyone.
I do like the adjustable angle to stand your phone up. All of these kickstand cases only have one set angle--the bad one.
