My friend is interested in finding out if there are any HTC Windows Phones that can be activated with Sprint without a required data plan. This might switch him from his Blackberry.

I'm thinking of buying the Fuze without a data plan, and then buying a 2G iPhone from a friend and then activating it through iTunes and adding the iPhone data plan. Then just swap back and forth between the phones when I want to. However until I get the iPhone and its data plan, is there a way I can disconnect the data from the Fuze entirely so my bill isn't like $1000?
yes it's easy to remove and or block gprs
How do I do it? Sorry for the nubness but its my first smartphone. Not too familiar with it yet.
So I was told from a Sprint person there's a difference between having a data pack vs. a data plan. Don't really know what's so different, since the data pack I have is "unlimited data" just like their "unlimited data" in their data plan. So supposedly there is a difference? That some smartphones -require- a data plan to operate? That they're two separate things? I currently have a HTC Touch Diamond, and that operates fine with my data pack. But something like the HTC Evo and other phones won't work supposedly?
Also, if that is the case, what smartphones are available that I could have unlocked and use without having a dataplan?
Yea; well they started doing that when smartphones hit the market. Feature phones and the like use data packs or whatever and smart phones use data plans.
Check and see the price differences; when I switched from my impression to galaxy s, I.switched my 15 dollar data pack thing to the cheapest data plan that was the sane price.

Your data pack gives you unlimited data for your device, however on certain devices in order to activate them on your plan you have to have an actual 'data' plan. All android devices and all new blackberries that i'm aware of on sprint require an actual data plan. The only android device you can get from sprint to get around this is the motorola i1, which you would be looking at $10 for unlimited data pack because its nextel, and then an extra $10 because of the stupid premium data charge now charged to all smartphones. The only smartphone I would even consider that doesn't require a data plan and you can use a data pack, is the touch pro 2. I carry an evo but used the tp2 before and sometimes miss the keyboard. Great phone, not so great operating system.

Thanks for the replies! Btw, do you know if I were to get some smartphone that's CDMA from another carrier, but not 4G, and it was flashed already, would Sprint activate it?
I'm thinking about upgrading to the HTC Inspire. I don't want to get a data plan because I get wifi 90% of the day (at home and on campus).
My dad is the only person in our family plan who has a data plan. Can he use my upgrade to purchase the Inspire for his line and then switch SIM cards with me? Will he still be able to use his own upgrade for himself in the near future?
I read that AT&T can detect which phone people are using by IMEI. However I've used my Nokia E71 for the past year (upgraded online without a data plan, don't know why it didn't force me) and have been using an iPhone 3G (not mine initially) for a couple of months with no data plan and haven't been caught yet.
Hi,
I just bought a used HTC G1. With AT&T, there is unlimited internet for non smart phones for $10. Is there any way(APN?) I can use that instead of the 200mb/2GB data plan which is alot more $$$?
BTW, I changed my data package to non smartphone and when I plugged my sim into the G1, I got a message saying that a smartphone data plan is required so it automatically enrolled me in.

I'm not sure how you can sign up for the unlimited internet for non-smartphone with AT&T using G1, but here's my case:
I was already an existing AT&T customer & I had a Motorola RAZAR V3 before I got a G1.
I bought a T-Mobile G1 from Craigslist & unlocked it (You have 3 choicea: 1. you can ask one of your T-Mobile friend make a call to T-Mobile unlock it for free, or 2. you can buy the unlock service from eBay, or 3. find an authorized cel phone selling company who offers such service for a fee), then input the APN setting listed below on G1 (if you need more detailed step-by-step instructions, you can try this blog post, but I can't remember if that's the site I followed the setup), then I added AT&T's unlimited medianet data plan (which was offered plan at that time, I think that's back in 2008 or earlier when I did this), as there's no such data plan offered via AT&T anymore - they put me on the unlimited data plan when I switched to Family plan on my account with my family in 2010.
Here's the APN setting works with AT&T - this is what I have on my G1 and it works just fine for everything (except mms - because G1 doesn't have compatible built for AT&T carrier on this particular service):

The person claim this setting works well, but I haven't tried this setting (it's a false claim on this post that this setting will get you onto AT&T's 3G network), so other than no 3G network, I don't see what this setting benefits you from the previous setting listed above:

Just thought you might want to know that you can only get onto AT&T's 2G (Edge) network using a G1 cel phone on AT&T carrier:

I am a AT&T prepaid user. Can I use the Atrix 4G in it without data plan? I only use Wi-Fi which is much faster.
The AT&T shop assistant man told me that I will not be able to use it if I do not open any date plan. If I am a prepaid user I can not use the phone; If I am a postpaid user I will be notified to add a data plan after I insert the SIM card into the Atrix 4G which is a smartphone.
Currently I also use a smartphone in AT&T network and does not commit any data plan. The phone works great. The shop assistant said the reason is that Atrix 4G is a AT&T phone and will be recognized by AT&T and force to open a data plan.
I do not know whether I should believe him for may be he is just trying to sell me more expensive plans. Is it technically possible to ban prepaid users? Is there any way to avoid this restriction? Since the Atrix 4G smartphone is bought in full price and unlocked, I do not owe AT&T anything. It works in T-Mobile, but does not works in AT&T prepaid, which seems very rediculous.
You may use any phone smartphone that its not ATT branded.
But if the phone is a ATT branded they do detect it using the imei and force you to add the expensive data plan. You may run a few months without been detected, but sooner or later they find out and force you to change plan.
I know this for fact because a used to use a Xperia X1 that came unlock from other carrier on ATT, and they never force me to change plan, but as soon as I started using an Iphone on the network a few weeks later I got a txt msg telling me they detected a smartphone without data plan, and automatically added the data plan.
You can modify in Setting-->Wireless&network-->mobile network-->Access point name. After that, you can set user name, add, pass follow your mobile's network service. Good luck.
have beeen using a atrix since march and have had a iphone since 2g on att using my sim with no data plan. just put the sim in and off you go almost 5 yrs now, and no forced data plan.
