i want to make my own theme, but im new to programming/developing..
can anyone give me a link for beginners ? i searched around, but didn't find anything usefull..

You need some skills in graphics editing (Photoshop/GIMP/Paint.NET) and WinCE CAB Manager, that's all .

i read the guide to replacing the start button but it doesnt change anything on my HTC Touch 2
There really isn't much to "teach"... just take a theme made by someone else and open the cab.
All you need to do is replace images and the registry entries pointing to each image.

That involves modification of binaries (DLL, EXE etc.) and is a bit more complicated.
For normal themes, just do as tacchan23 said .

i just tried that, but i can't find any photos on any themes..
i tried some other applications, like the smartlock.. and i could remove the sound, im very glad for that
but please tell me where i can find the photos on any themes..

First be prepared to screw some stuff up so make backups of the files you are going to change. Next this will take a while but copy all of the image files from your windows directory on the device to your desktop. Once that is done go through and figure out which ones you want to change, modify them keeping in mind the correct size. drop them back into windows directory, soft reset and your modified images should show. That is probably the best way to start, once you do that and have a little success go nuts. changing up .dll's and .exe's takes a little more finesse and can sometimes be really tedious, but if your having fun you'll want to dive a little deeper into it.... If you are wanting to modify sense or tf3d ui there is a lot of information on it just look around but it is not as easy as one might think.

so can it be dangerous ? will it brick my phone, if i do anything wrong ?
No, just some missing or bad looking graphics, that's all. If you want to modify ressources inside EXEs or DLLs, you'll have to be more careful, but if you do a backup there shouldn't be any problems (you can't brick your phone this way, at least).

Open the CAB with which you install them, the pictures are in PNG format. Perhaps you looked in the TSK?
Anyway, modifying the Manila slider icons is different, you should search here, there are some threads with custom sliders, just download the files and modify them .
all i want to do is replace the white start button on my HTC touch 2 (QVGA) with a coloured version of the same icon. Total Commander wont let me move the files required and im just losing patience, i dont know what im doing wrong.

Ah sorry, it's only for WM 6.5.1/6.5.3, you seem to have a stock 6.5 with Start button at the top. So you'll need to edit the shellres.96.dll, but that's much more complicated... I recommend you searching a bit.

It's just PNG, if you don't know what it is, then you should read a bit about graphics editing first .
total commander wont let me copy the shellres.96.dll to my storage card, how do I "unprotect" the file?

Me too! I am a photoshop kind of guy. Hence the cool S2U2 stuff for WinMo. cause all that was was editing images, which i can handle... but all this signing, and actual code im at a loss. Where did you read up on making your theme? Maybe we can combine forces and crank out some really killer stuff. If you want to "check my resume" so to speak I used the same nickname at PPCGeeks, i was pretty into at one time, but i got banned from PPCGeeks, and switched to Android....

Look up Ratcom on here. His sig has the tutorials that got me started (its a bit confusing at first).
From what I can tell, to edit anything that isn't an image, its located in an XML file. The odd thing is that even Dreamweaver couldn't open the code correctly...
I'd be all for teaming up. My schedule is a bit crazy atm (finals week) but then I go on Xmas break and i'd love to do more with this theme. I've already got a couple more ideas...

Themes require NO coding. Purely PNG editing. You can open a ROM using a ZIP program (I like WinRar myself). All you do is find the image you want to edit, edit it, and overwrite the existing one.
Signing is very straightforward too, just follow the Ratcom links. You'll find a working mirror and instruction.

XML files located inside of an APK are effectively compiled, there's no way to edit / repackage them. You can Google search, there's a java "printer" which will convert them to TXT. But to change any of these, you've gotta start from the source code, make the changes and then compile the entire APK.
I could be wrong on this, but I believe HTC has released the GSM code but not CDMA. In this case we're stuck or would have to pull a compiled XML from a known GSM source. Actual ROM chefs can correct me.
So, since we are finally getting some stickies posted around here. A Theme creation write up would be a good idea if anyone wanted to take it on. I've never done it, I'm sure I am capable, just to lazy.
BTW. This looks good. Anyone test with Fresh 1.0? Most themes seem to have issues.

There already is, and riotkid found it. Look up Ratcom (check GSM Hero themes) and the link in his sig. He's got links to everything you need to know.

Edit: Your taskbar is missing a bunch of the new icons. I assume you applied a different lock screen or something, right? Because vibrate, battery, and alarm are all new icons in fresh 1.0 but yours are the stock ones.

I built it on fresh 1.0 so aside from the different icons that fresh mentioned, I haven't seen any.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm not terribly sure when it happened either. Probably when I flashed one of the themes for .07...I need to re-flash and rebuild stuff.
omg, almost forgot, this is ONLY for 2.1 sense
you can view the Rosie.thm in notepad, all the commands seem to be there, i dont know if you can edit it and resave it as a .thm, so i dont know if you can make this work on 1.5. why not give it a try?
so i started messing around with metamorph, and i came out with this, and actually kinda like it.
its really easy to install
download the zip to anywhere on your sd card
download and install "metamorph" from the market
start meta, let it run its check (for root acess and the like)
then click on pick theme, navigate to the zip you downloaded, let it install (5s tops) and now you have a new espresso rosie! the blocks expand when you press them!!

the best part of metamorph is, the fact that it only affects the files you tell it too. for example, most mods include an edit to the status bar AND rosie, because their both connected somehow. but with meta, theres no update signing or anything, its just putting in the right commands and images, and no need to boot recovery!!

Not 100% worded correctly.
Rosie is the apk that will be edited, and it's located in /system/app
In the folder along with the scriptare folders that show the path inside the apk, and the files that will replace the existing ones. The script tells metamorph where to copy/replace the files in the folders to.

Unfortunately the xml files are coded/in binary
So even if you uncode them with that one XMLS blah blah .jar,
you shill wouldn't be able to make it work on the phone....
IDK i'm probably wrong though. Probably WAY more in depth than that.

Settings.apk. Koni has a clear version in his ROM that you can yank. However, the actual background itself is in com.htc.resources.apk. All the other icons are in Settings.apk. Oh, and the background is a .9 png, 'appwidget_bg.9.png'.

ive never really looked for it cause i dont use it but if i had to guess it is in the htcsettingswidgets.apk as well as some of the framework files or htc resources files to make some of the backgrounds transparent

where's the background and buttons for the android (not htc) search widget? I think I found it in framework-res.apk, but I still couldn't find the red g in the button at the end, just the google in the text field.

gotcha my bad. i looked in the settings.apk and thought about doing it that way but if i went into resources and made all those transparent then they would be stuck with the htcresources file that i choose and will lose it if he flashes anything new really

I know. That sucks. It's actually just 1 file in htcresources, the background for the widget.
The best way is either to either have them manually edit, or create a MetaMorph, so that it doesn't affect other settings.
I'm really starting to think that MetaMorph is the way to go, given the way HTC has the 2.1 framework spread out all over the place...
that's the beauty if doing metamoprh... you can change just the files you want within an apk or a jar, without changing anything else. And it's breeze to setup, much easier than an update zip, I think.

yeah ive never looked into it. i guess cause i dont like just pulling pngs and such out of files. as if its not already alot of work editing them and changing them.

If I was to try this on my own, I guess I wouldnt know what to do after I pulled the HtcSettingsWidget.apk out of my rom of choice. What prog would I even use to open it on my computer and edit it? I guess this is a theme-ing 101 thread...

HtcSettingsWidget.apk is the wrong file. You're looking for Settings.apk. The HTC one is for the little rocker panel style widgets.
Also, you can configure WinZip to open .apks. Then its just a matter of editing .pngs.
That widget is from Konicub's Aloysius rom. You should contact him directly and ask for it.

If you want to try it on your own, this guide was helpful for me in learning. Seemed a little overwhelming at first, but it isn't that hard once you start playing around.

we determined it wouldnt be possible to do without replacing his htcResources file completely cause there is a background file in there that needs to be changed. if he wants to post is hycResources file then i would be happy to create a flashable zip that will give him the clear power settings. but if he ever flashes a theme or different mod then he would lose it cause most of the mods and themes change the and once u change the file u lose what ever was changed in it before. the only way to avoid this is to create a metamorph file and i dont mess with that much.
I'll have ya a metamoprh either later tonight or tomorrow, depending on how busy I am today.
okay, put together quick, let me know if it works. It is a metamorph, not a flash, so won't change anything else.
So CoOkie developed this amazing new layer at my request and hid it in the registry settings of the new and EFFING AMAZING CHT2.0 setup.. .
Now you have seen some of the neat stuff we have been trying to do with CHTS (scheduler) but this is something different.. and well.. simple..
But can have unlimited potential.. and can do all the crazy **** your mother warned you about...
Ok .. maybe not .. but it CAN do some really cool stuff.
Its Called "ForeLayer" and its exactly what it sounds like.. its a layer placed almost as high up onto the layers of the phone as possible.. skinning over the top of everything BUT the taskbar and CHT2 slider.
But the cool part? It has ZERO click interruption!! So you could lets say .. put some fish floating in the middle of your screen.. that will stay there on top of your icons , clock, ect.. but NOT interfere with click or swypability.

Please include 2 files.. one on top of a wallpaper.. and the .png file itself.
Remember.. you can save them as anything you want.. but for them to load into the phone it must be placed into the appropriate folder and named ForeLayer.png then the phone has to be soft reset...

Here is the RegEdit Cab thanks to Kurt (since i am an absolute moron when it comes to cabbing registry files apparently, and i was making people use regedit and assign values..)
Well... he made it a super simple .cab and after its installed.. all you have to do is drop your new files into the folder.. rename is appropriately and reset.
We included 3 of the first ones i built. The Fish , Broken Screen (*looks REALLY effin real) and Water.. lol... Have Fun.
Ps Only supports 480x800 for now.. it will sit on top of 960 and 1440 but the file itself must be 480.

So can this be animated? I am thinking Live Wallpaper here. Fish swimming over everything - and being unclickable it's not going to interfere with anything else. This is a great feature.

First you need to have/install CHT 2.0.0 Beta + (Recommended) CHTEditor 2.0.0.
After installation of this two, you simply install the cab posted on the first post; => soft reset, the broken glass is pre loaded. fore changing the image file you need to go into the ForeLayer folder, rename the file or edit the reg key.
But on that latest I will start to get work fore making a more easy switch.
Awesome! This may actually get me to give CHT 2.0 another chance!

Yeah animated gif maybe would be cool. Also I noticed it does not skin upto the task bar for example the broken glass. It cuts off meaning it doesn't reach the top. Is there any way to make it go all the way to tha task bar? But it still very cool by the way!
I posted a query last year regarding this . If you guys would remember , there was a dog in the earlier desktop windows versions of early 90's . This little rascal would eat up the screen and even dig holes. Worked as a kind of a screensaver.. Now since the work seems to be done here.... any clues as to how to get him on mobile.

I can unlock because I know where I put my finger, but I don't have any "image" of the "original lock screen".

Yes thats a problem, but that happens often, if you install softkeys etc and uninstall them, the space for the parts are blank
I do have a hd mini slider file. it is not the original file, but then you have the manila file and maybe you can edit it, or use the slider
just copy the manila file into your windows directory^^
Well, I dont know, but if your icons have disappered to, you might wanna install copy the file in the second rar file to your windows directory.
I know, that this is not exactly what you were looking for, but it might help you, for the time being

This is a problem with your sliders form You could make the icons blank and then just leave it at that, but you will not see anything, if there was a missed call etc. So you should edit the slider you did to make that fit, or just make the phone icon smaller by editing the files^^
