Hi, I was wondering if anyone has good experiences with any theft programs for the HD2. What I need is an application that is hidden in the phone that will send an SMS to my phone number in case a thief starts using the phone with a different SIMcard. I have heard about programs sending me SMS, GPS Position, freezing phone, making calls etc.
Anyone has any experiences with similar?
What about Sprite Terminator? It has GPS location included. As far as no one deletes the software from the phone after theft, you have a chance to find it. You can use the phone of someone else you added to your stolen one's Sprite Terminator remotely to find it's location.
I'm for myself searching for a solution to install Sprite Terminator to the ROM afterwards. I don't want to do a hard-reset. Someone knows a solution?
Thanks in advance.
I used to use Sprite Terminator - but it doesn't yet support WiMo 6.5 - it installs etc, but it doesn't respond to any SMS commands.
Sprite haven't bothered to update it in ages and haven't even mentioned if/when they are!
RemoteTracker in latest beta works fine with 6.5 and HD2.

Is there any possibility to write the software into the ROM without flashing any causing a hard-reset?
Try mylookout.com it free and works really well includes ,Firewall ,Antivirus software and tracks your phone if lost or stolen ,also you can delete all info off the phone at the touch of a button.
Try MS MyPhone. You can trace where the phone was last used for free but there is a small charge for ringing, locking and, or, erasing information from it.
Has an added bonus of backing up your contact list as well.
When I saw your thread title, I was triggered... somebody is looking for a tool that can be used by thiefs...
So you mean an ANTI theft tool ;-)
Cause nobody has written a hidden program that can steel your device.

Okay, this is probably something that's been covered before, but I've had no luck in searching it, mostly because it's just way too generic a search...
At one point I had an app installed - either on my HTC phone (dcd ROM of some level - WM6.1 in any case) or my PC, I don't recall which - that sync'd my call logs with my contacts' activities in Outlook. Since the last dcd ROM I installed (a few versions ago, admittedly) I've lost track of that app.
Can anyone suggest, from this piss-poor description, what that app might have been, and where to find it?
I've found one that puts entries in your Calendar from your call logs, and a few other commercial apps, but the one I had was a simple little freeware thingy that attached the call info to each contact's Activities (or maybe it was their Journal).
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide from this weak post!
bumpage...
try this
have a look at this
When I open contacts and chose a contact to make a call, after finishing a call phone application closes but contacts remains open.
Is there a way for contacts to close automatically after making a call?
thank you for answer in advance.
I have HTC touch cruise wih original WWE WM6.1 ROM.
Don't know about the default contacts app but i use iContact and it is set to close on use - problem solved.
thank you for answer. This iContact application looks good.
But problem is, since I use original ROM I can't remove original applications, and I
don't want to install any unnecessary application, especially if it is double.
I do that only if it's really neccessary (like Skyfire because of flash).
The installation of iContact will remap the "Contacts" soft key to itself so in all honesty you wont see the built in app unless you actively seek out th eshortcut created fo rit. The one on your Start menu will also be remapped.
For me its one of the must have apps to get a finger friendly PPC.
I understand I won't see original application. But it will be there. And that is what I don't like. I don't like hidden unneccessery things in windows on my PC or PPC. So I would like to find a solution with original application (which is finger frendly BTW). This is it's only lack. And inability to hide SIM contacts which doesn't bug me that much.
But if I don't find solution I will definitely try this application. And maybe you can suggest me best version since I found more of them here on xda-developers.
Thank you
You can't remove the original version as it's provided in the ROM and so without cooking your own ROM it can't be removed. The original is not overly finger friendly unless you have wee fingers.
Given your dislike of duplication of software does this mean you surf using IE.
Personally i am using the Burt Edition v6.4.5 of iContact.
unfortunately if you'd like to change preferences on your device... and enhance it, you will also have to install new applications as not all default apps can be changed the way we want.
you have a touch cruise. it's a strong device, with enough memory to hold lots of applications. don't worry about it.
Ok. I know I have to install new apps and to try things if I want to enhance performance of my mobile. And I do that. I try things and I have to hard reset sometimes because of it. And I know my phone is capable of having a lot applications installed. That's why I bought it.
I just want to find the solution that pleases me the best.
And because original application is good enough to me, except this exit problem, I think best solution would be to have original application and make it close after use.
I don't like having double applications because of my experience with windows. Everything in registry decreases performance and if I have a few applications for same thing there's usually some kind of conflict.
But as I said I do try things in search of best solution, so I tried iContact.
It really is great application, much much better than original. and much more finger friendliy.
I decided to keep it.
And then I noticed that my cube freezes after using iContact. It seems to be a common problem and I found no solution for it.
So I'm back on the beginning.
Anyway, thank you for your help, ideas and suggestions.
I'm sorry that the topic isn't clear, but I don't know how the thing I want to ask about is called. I've tried many keywords in assotiation with site:xda-developers.com on google and didn't find what I wanted to get.
I'm using prepaid polish network called simplus, one can change alot on his account by using many short codes like *100#, after which SMS is sent to the phone with needed info, or a service is activated/deactivated.
But code *110# should enter interactive thing, which simplus calls ebok. It works even on very old phones with color display, not sure about monochrome, and I'm sure it worked on Tytn2's(Kaiser) original rom.
It's summons white windows/square that has written
"1. something
2. something else
3. something else
etc."
and below there is usual WM field for input, one writes the input and after a second another window opens with new options. It's somehow managed by short codes or short code makros, I'm not sure how to call it.
It makes managing account very easy and should be independent to system, but right now all I get is
"Command sent..."
and then "session terminated" after looong while.
I remember that it didn't work on SPV classic as well. Did work on SPV C600.
I have installed custom bare rom by Witschey, but I believe it's better to ask her, because there's probably many roms on which it doesn't work,
SPB mobile shell 3.5.3(which I for tests turned off) with MobileSense 3.5.2.20091229
SMS-chat that I turned off, but I sed default SMS client to SMS-chat instead of tmail.exe so clicking on icon in SPB gets me straight to SMS-chat(I turned off SMS-chat when trying it, but it was still default SMS client)
and S2U2 2.22.
All other apps weren't running when I was trying it out.
I believe that there's probably some strange cab I have to install for it to work. I probably would find the answer myself if I knew how the system is called, but other than ebok or e-bok I didn't find any other name for it.
I am new to Android. Just got my Vibrant. I want to protect this phone so that in case it is lost or stolen I can recover it. Could you tell me what are some of the best apps for this?
Here is a list of names I know about for now:
Where's My Droid - This is currently installed, but required me to send a text to my phone to activate the GPS and even then it won't keep the GPS active long enough to get a precise location. Furthermore, it can alert the would be robber.
Glympse - well, this is not for stolen phones
Wavesecure - couldn't find any good threads on this. Seems to have an annual subscription fee of $19. I don't want that. Just want a standalone tracker.
Remote security - Not clear that this is a good app.
TheftAlarm - Again, developed in foreign language and I don't know how good it is
MobileDefense - Maybe this is the best app, but it is still in beta and no more users are accepted. I already filled out a request.
Find My Android - Was suggested in this thread, but it doesn't seem to be different from Where's My Droid, except the notification when SIM is replaced.
Lookout Mobile Security - Doesn't seem bad, but it doesn't lock your phone remotely. Can easily uninstall the program. I also found out that I better use a different email address than the one my phone gets otherwise the phone gets an email with "location" of the phone when you look it up online. This is better than Where's My Droid since you can do it more discreetly online, without sending texts (but have to make sure the email you use is not managed by the phone).
Am I missing something? I really want to protect this phone and it is frustrating that among so many apps, we seem to be missing good anti-theft solutions. Preferably I want something that can lock the phone remotely and allow me to do things without interruptions from the thief or at least discreetly. What would you recommend?
Also, I have a rooted (stock) Vibrant.
Thanks.
Where's My Droid isn't exactly very subtle about sending out replies, the author basically said there's nothing he can do.
Most of the other options include AntiVirus and other nonsense, and are expensive or questionable.
Tasker can automatically upload GPS, respond to an email or SMS to do so.. If you send it the right command it could take pictures periodically, make an outgoing call, whatever... It's extremely flexible in what it can do.

WOW! Ok, but the question is - 1.can it lock the phone remotely? 2.What happens if the thief uninstalls Tracker or changes the SIM (can you password protect it)? Finally, 3.can it take picture AND email them remotely? Otherwise, I don't see much use to this feature if the phone is gone.
Lookout seems rather good, but I have not tested it personally. I'd add a link, but I'm a new user. Should be easy to find with a Google/Market search, though.
Well that (un installing tasker)may be the case with any tech anti theft, if the thief is smart and careful they will wipe/reset/format whatever they took, rendering a soft lo jack useless
I would just get tasker and lookup findmyandroid on lifehacker, its the best current option

Yeah, I found out about LookOut on Android forums. I have installed it. It doesn't allow you to lock the phone remotely and can easily be uninstalled.
As for Find My Android, I don't see how is it different from Where's My Droid., maybe except the part where you're notified if the SIM card is replaced.
I updated the original post.
Find my android isn't the name of the app, its what the lifehacker post is tagged as (#findmyandroid)
The program is tasker, and its more customizable and it can turn on gps

Sure, Lookout can be uninstalled, as can any other app. But really, you should have some sort of password on your device. With pattern unlock, there's really no reason not to do so.
According to one of the devs on their forums, remote locking as well as "other features" will be coming to Lookout "very soon".
https://lookout.zendesk.com/entries/24881-remote-lock
In the meanwhile, I use WaveSecure for locking my phone and Lookout for tracking, as its mechanism seems much better.
If you want to prevent Lookout from being uninstalled, just move the apk to /system/app (assuming your phone is rooted).
I have had Wave Secure since the Beta (it is free to beta testers) and love it. I can understand not wanting to pay, but it really is a great app. They have a zip file that you can flash in recovery if you are rooted. That will prevent the app from being erased if the phone is factory reset. I have also been using an app lately called "Tasker". It can track your phone, although I have not used it for this. Here is a link to the Wiki.

GPS Tracker by Instamapper is the one I use most. With a text message, it will return its location via Google maps. It will continually do so for as long as you have it set up for. Every 10 Seconds, Every 2 minutes, Every half hour, etc. I used it to track my stolen phone with the laptop in the car. This app saved me from buying a new phone.

Same here. Glad I got it while it was still a beta!
Dear All,
I am starting this thread to get some feedback and hopefully other users will find it helpful too. I lost my HTC HD2 3 days ago and learnt it the hard way that I had to have anti-theft app installed.
Nevertheless, I have started using a HTC desire since yesterday and trying to install an app which is free or <£10. The features that are needed for the app to be truly meaningful are:
no subscription fee
ring on sending a sms code even if on silent
remote lock on sending a sms code
remote wipe on sending a sms code
auto enabling of gps even if gps is off
forward gps location on sending a sms code
auto gps update
notification on sim change with details of new sim number
preferably survive a factory hard reset
if it has ability to give out call log or forward sms received/sent from the replacement sim, it will be a big bonus
I have narrowed down the following apps. The one that comes close (theftaware) is a trial. Can I request any feedbacks or recommendations please.
itag
wheres my droid
seek droid
find my phone
theft aware
watchdroid pro
wave secure
mobile defense
Will be grateful or any tips.
idk about the others but theft aware does all of that but its expensive and limited to one phone per license i know seek droid does some of that is is significantly cheaper the tasker script that is a WIP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052249
You do not need anything right now. Once you lose your phone, you can install "PLAN B" look it up on the Market. It is from Look Out and is great. Its free, and once you lose your phone, you can remotely install it through the Online Android Market.

It is my understanding that it would only work if the thief is dumb enough to continue using the same original sim card. If the sim is changed, thats it !
CAn anyone please let me know if theftaware will continue to work if the sim card is changed ?
